Google appears to be testing a left-hand AI Mode sidebar directly on the desktop Google Search results page. The reported rail includes a small Google logo, conversation-history entries, a control to start an AI Mode chat and a settings icon. It is not a confirmed global rollout: the feature was reported on October 14, 2026, but another observer could not reproduce it in any browser, and Google has not announced this exact interface change.
What the reported sidebar does
The experiment places controls normally associated with AI Mode alongside ordinary web results. Instead of opening a separate AI Mode destination first, a user who sees the rail could start an AI conversation from the standard desktop results page. The visible elements reported so far are:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- A small Google logo at the top of the vertical rail.
- Lines representing previous conversations or conversation history.
- A control for starting an AI Mode chat.
- A settings icon.
The report came from a screenshot posted by Damien Andell, who asked whether the sidebar had become the default Google sidebar for every search. Search Engine Roundtable documented the observation on October 14, 2026.

Is it the new default Google sidebar?
There is no evidence of a broad default rollout. Barry Schwartz, reporting on the same observation, said he could not reproduce the sidebar in any browser and suspected an experiment. Google has not publicly confirmed this particular placement. The safest description is therefore “a reported test” or “an interface experiment,” not a permanent feature available to every account.

The experiment’s cohort, country coverage, browser and device requirements, account eligibility and duration have not been published. A user who does not see the rail should not infer that anything is wrong with their account; an experiment may be limited to selected users or may have been withdrawn.
Why Google may be testing it
A persistent rail would reduce the steps needed to move from a conventional search to a conversational session. Its position also keeps AI Mode visible while users browse regular links, potentially making follow-up questions and saved conversation history easier to reach. Those are reasonable implications of the design, not measured outcomes: no usage or engagement statistic has been published for this sidebar test.

Google has been positioning AI Mode as a more advanced Search experience. In a May 20, 2025 announcement, Google described AI Mode as beginning as a Labs experiment and rolling out in the United States without requiring Labs enrollment. The company highlighted advanced reasoning, multimodal input, follow-up questions and links to web pages. Google also explained that AI Mode can use “query fan-out,” splitting a complex request into subtopics and running multiple searches before composing a response. Google said capabilities could move into core Search as it received feedback.

| Experience | Where users enter it | Interaction | What is established |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ordinary web Search | Main results page | Primarily a query followed by ranked results | Confirmed core Search interface |
| AI Overviews | Shown within eligible Search results | An AI-generated overview with links; interaction can vary | Separate from the reported sidebar test |
| AI Mode | Dedicated AI Mode entry point or tab | Conversational follow-ups, multimodal questions and web links | Google describes it as experimental and warns it can make mistakes |
| Reported left rail | Left side of the ordinary desktop results page | Start AI Mode, view conversation-history lines and open settings | Unconfirmed test; availability and duration not stated |
The rail should not be confused with an announcement that AI Mode has replaced ordinary Search. It is an additional entry point shown to some users, if the test is active.

What the conversation history means
An update to the original report initially suggested that Gemini app conversations were appearing in the sidebar. Marie Haynes later corrected that description: the conversations she saw were sessions she had with Gemini through the Gemini overlay on her Android phone, not evidence that the Gemini app’s history had merged with AI Mode. The screenshot therefore cannot establish a general Gemini-to-AI-Mode history integration.
Seeing conversation-history lines also does not establish how long Google stores them, which account settings control them or whether the entries are synchronized across devices. Those details have not been specified for this test.
What users should expect if they see it
- Check the page and device. The report concerns the desktop web Search results page. It does not establish availability in mobile Search or in every desktop browser.
- Use the start-chat control. If the control opens AI Mode, treat the session as the same experimental Search experience Google describes, with follow-up questions and links to web sources.
- Review history carefully. History lines may represent AI Mode or Gemini-overlay conversations associated with the signed-in account. The report does not prove that all Gemini app chats appear there.
- Open settings before relying on history. Because Google has not documented the test’s retention and synchronization rules, check the available settings if you need to manage conversation records.
- Expect changes. Experimental interface elements can disappear, move or differ between accounts without indicating a service outage.
Reliability and privacy considerations
Google characterizes AI Mode as experimental and cautions that it may make mistakes. A sidebar shortcut changes how quickly users can start an AI session; it does not make generated answers authoritative. For important claims, open the linked web pages, check dates and compare information with primary sources.
Conversation-history controls also deserve attention. The reported rail shows that history can be surfaced in the Search interface, but the available evidence does not specify retention periods, deletion behavior or whether the same history appears on every device. Use the settings control and Google account privacy controls available to you rather than assuming the sidebar follows the Gemini app’s rules.

What has not been confirmed
- A worldwide or permanent rollout.
- A fixed list of supported countries, browsers, devices or account types.
- The test’s start date, end date or experiment size.
- Any increase in searches, clicks or AI Mode usage caused by the rail.
- A merger between Gemini app conversations and AI Mode history.
Google has separately reported that query types showing AI Overviews saw more than 10% higher usage in the United States and India in internal data covering September 2024 through April 2025. That figure concerns AI Overviews, not this sidebar experiment, and cannot be used to measure the rail’s impact.
Bottom line
Google is testing, or has tested, a left AI Mode rail on the ordinary desktop Search results page. It could make conversational Search easier to launch and revisit, but the evidence does not show a default rollout. Until Google confirms the feature, treat its appearance as an account-level experiment and verify important answers through the web links AI Mode provides.
