Use Google Search Console to find out how your pages perform in Google Search; use Google Analytics to find out what visitors do after they arrive. Search Console reports queries, pages, impressions, clicks, click-through rate (CTR), and average position. Google Analytics reports organic sessions, landing-page engagement, and conversions.
The practical sequence is Search Console first for visibility changes, then Analytics for traffic quality and business results. Their totals are not expected to match exactly because they record different events, scopes, and attribution decisions.

The difference in one table
The tools answer different questions rather than competing to be a single SEO dashboard. Search Console records exposure to and interactions with results on Google services. Google Analytics starts measuring when a visitor reaches your configured site or app.

What Search Console can tell you
Search Console shows which searches and pages generated visibility and result interactions. It is the appropriate place to ask whether a page appeared for a query, whether impressions changed, whether users clicked, and how the page’s average position moved. Because the report can be segmented by query, page, country, date, device, and search type, you can localize a change instead of treating all organic traffic as one number.

What Analytics can tell you
Google Analytics describes the visit after the click. Its traffic-acquisition and landing-page reports let you isolate Google organic traffic, see which landing pages received it, measure engagement, and connect visits with configured events and conversions. It answers whether search visitors reached a useful page, continued through the site, and completed an outcome that matters to the organization.
Google Search Central describes the division this way: “The source of truth for Search performance will always be Search Console, while the source of truth for behavior inside your site will be Google Analytics.”
Search Console’s metrics and their limits
Open the Performance report in Search Console when the question concerns Google Search exposure. Its four core metrics are related, but each describes a different stage of the result interaction.
Impressions
An impression is recorded when a user saw a link to your site on a Google service. Impressions measure the opportunity to earn a click, not a visit and not a conversion. A page can gain impressions while receiving little traffic if it appears frequently in searches where users choose another result.
Clicks
A click is a click on your link in a Google service. This is the Search Console count of result interactions, not a browser session recorded by your site’s analytics tag. A person can click and then leave before Analytics records a usable session, while other measurement conditions can also prevent a one-to-one match.

Click-through rate
CTR is calculated as clicks divided by impressions. It is useful for comparing how often a result earns a click when it is shown, but it should be read with the query, page, device, date, and search type in view. A high CTR on a small set of impressions does not necessarily produce more visits than a lower CTR on a much larger opportunity.
Average position
Average position is the average position value for your impressions. It is a relative search-results measure, not one permanent ranking number for a page. Position can vary by query, device, and result type, so a property-wide average can hide very different outcomes across individual searches and pages.
Dimensions for finding the cause
Use the available dimensions as a diagnostic grid:
- Query: identify searches gaining or losing visibility and clicks.
- Page: find the URLs responsible for a change.
- Country: separate geographic shifts from site-wide movement.
- Date: compare the affected period with a matched prior period.
- Device: distinguish mobile and other device patterns.
- Search type: separate the kinds of Google Search results represented in the data.
This combination makes Search Console the first stop for diagnosing a fall or rise in organic visibility. Analytics cannot replace the query and impression view because it begins after a visitor has already reached the property.
Analytics reports for post-click performance
Traffic acquisition
In the Traffic acquisition report, filter the analysis to Google organic traffic. This gives you the visit-side view of search: sessions attributed to organic search and the engagement associated with those sessions. Source and medium are useful for isolating the channel, while the landing page identifies the first page reached.
Landing-page outcomes
Landing-page reporting connects an acquisition source with what happened next. Compare organic sessions by landing page, then inspect engagement and the configured conversion events for those pages. This can reveal that two pages with similar Search Console click counts produce very different levels of useful activity once visitors arrive.

Events and conversions
Conversions are Analytics outcomes configured for the site or app. They may represent the business actions your measurement plan defines, but Analytics will only report them when the relevant measurement and attribution settings are working. Search Console does not measure those on-site actions; it measures the result exposure and clicks that preceded them.

Analytics traffic reports do not provide Search Console’s query-level visibility, impression count, or average-position view. A session attributed to organic search tells you that a visitor arrived through that channel, not the exact Google result position that was displayed or every query that generated an impression.
A reliable workflow for organic-search analysis
Use the tools in sequence rather than trying to force one report to answer both parts of the journey.
- Start in Search Console Performance. Select the period in which the change occurred and compare it with a matched prior period. Record changes in impressions, clicks, CTR, and average position before drawing a conclusion.
- Break down the change. Segment the comparison by page, query, country, device, and search type. Look for concentration: a single page, query group, country, or device may explain most of the movement.
- Interpret the pattern. If impressions and average position change together, investigate the visibility pattern shown by the affected segments. If impressions are stable but clicks fall, inspect the result’s title and snippet appeal and the competing search features visible for those searches.
- Move to Analytics Traffic acquisition. Filter to Google organic traffic and inspect the landing pages receiving those visits. Review engagement and configured conversions to determine whether the remaining traffic is useful and whether it produces business outcomes.
- Reconcile only a material gap. Align the date range, property, landing-page scope, filters, consent conditions, and attribution before treating a difference between clicks and sessions as a problem. Small differences are normal because the systems use different measurement logic.
How to read common patterns
Impressions fall
A fall in impressions is a Search Console visibility issue first. Compare the affected dates with a matched period, then use page, query, country, device, and search-type segments to determine whether the decline is broad or confined to particular combinations. Analytics can show the downstream session effect, but it cannot identify which searches stopped displaying your pages.
Impressions stay similar while clicks fall
This pattern points to a lower click rate from the opportunities that remain. Check CTR alongside the affected queries and pages, then inspect the titles and snippets users see and the competing search features occupying the result page. Do not infer that a stable impression count means traffic quality is unchanged; the click decision happens at the search-results boundary.

Search Console clicks and Analytics sessions diverge
Clicks and sessions are different measurements. Search Console counts a click on a Google result; Analytics counts a visit recorded under the property’s measurement and attribution setup. Before investigating, make the comparison equivalent: use the same dates, the same property, the same landing-page scope, and equivalent filters. Check whether consent prevented measurement for some visitors and whether attribution rules assigned visits differently. Small residual differences are expected.
Google Search Central notes: “When comparing sessions and clicks data exported from the tools, you might notice that you have a difference between Google Analytics and Search Console data.”
Sessions are present but conversions are weak
This is an Analytics question after acquisition has been confirmed. Compare organic landing pages, engagement, and configured conversion events. Search Console can tell you which pages and queries earned clicks, but the landing-page and conversion reports explain whether those visits led to the outcomes your organization tracks.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Reconciling a large discrepancy
There is no universal percentage that defines an acceptable difference between Search Console clicks and Analytics sessions. Official guidance is qualitative: small discrepancies are normal, while a large gap should be investigated in context. Use this checklist before escalating the issue:
Recommended Free Tools
- Date range: confirm both reports cover exactly the same start and end dates and time basis.
- Property: verify that the Search Console property and the Analytics site or app measurement represent the same destination and scope.
- Landing-page scope: make sure URL variants, subdirectories, or other page restrictions are not included in one report and excluded from the other.
- Filters: remove or match report filters so that one tool is not excluding traffic the other includes.
- Consent: account for visitors who clicked but did not permit the Analytics measurement needed to create a session.
- Attribution: check whether Analytics assigned the visit to another source or channel under its attribution rules.
After these checks, compare the remaining difference with the practical decision you are making. A small mismatch should not invalidate a clear trend that appears in both systems. A material mismatch that changes a business decision deserves a deeper measurement review.

Reporting without misleading totals
For an SEO visibility report
Lead with Search Console impressions, clicks, CTR, and average position. Include the dimensions that explain the movement: the pages and queries involved, plus relevant country, device, date, and search-type segments. Label the period being compared so a reader knows whether the change is recent or cumulative.
For a traffic-quality report
Use Analytics organic sessions, landing pages, engagement, and conversions. State the filters and attribution view used, because those choices define what the reported traffic represents. A conversion total without its configured scope cannot be compared safely with a Search Console click total.
For an executive explanation
Describe the funnel in two sentences: Search Console shows whether Google exposed and delivered clicks to the site; Analytics shows what those visitors did afterward. If the numbers differ, explain the measurement boundary before presenting a diagnosis.
Common mistakes and their fixes
- Calling Analytics the keyword-ranking tool: use Search Console’s query and average-position data for Google Search visibility.
- Treating a click as a session: keep the result interaction and the recorded site visit as separate metrics.
- Using one property-wide average to explain a local change: segment Search Console by page, query, country, device, and search type.
- Judging SEO only by clicks: move to Analytics to evaluate landing-page engagement and conversions.
- Judging SEO only by sessions: return to Search Console to see whether exposure, CTR, or position changed.
- Declaring a tracking failure from a small mismatch: align date range, property, scope, filters, consent, and attribution first.
- Reporting a position as a fixed rank: describe it as average position and retain its query, device, and result-type context.
Choosing the right starting point
Choose Search Console whenever the wording of the question includes appeared, impressions, queries, clicks from results, CTR, or position. Choose Analytics whenever it includes sessions, landing pages, engagement, or conversions. For a complete organic-search assessment, use both in that order: establish what happened in Google Search, then measure the value created after arrival.
