For most site owners, start with a Domain property if you can add a DNS record. It gives one Search Console view of the domain’s subdomains, protocols and paths. Choose a URL-prefix property when you need to restrict reporting to one protocol, host or folder, or when DNS verification is not available. You can add both types to the same Search Console account.
The important distinction is scope: a Domain property is broad by design, while a URL-prefix property matches only URLs beginning with the exact prefix you enter. That choice affects which pages and search data appear together in your reports, not how Google Search crawls or ranks the site.

What the two Search Console property types mean
Search Console properties are reporting containers. When you add a property, Google associates Search performance and indexing data with the URL set represented by that property. Google calls the two relevant choices Domain property and URL-prefix property; they are not interchangeable labels for the same scope.

Domain property
A Domain property is entered as a domain name without a protocol or path, such as example.com. It covers that domain’s subdomains and paths over all protocols. In practice, a single property can include:

http://example.comandhttps://example.comwww.example.com,m.example.comand other subdomains- Every path under those hosts, such as
/blog/or/shop/
The coverage follows the domain you enter. A Domain property for fish.example.com covers that child domain and its descendants, but it does not include the parent example.com or sibling subdomains. Google’s Domain property documentation describes this hierarchy and the resulting coverage.
URL-prefix property
A URL-prefix property starts with a complete URL prefix, including its protocol. You can enter a host alone, such as https://example.com, or narrow it to a path such as https://example.com/pets/. Search Console includes URLs that begin with that exact prefix.
Because the protocol is part of the prefix, https://example.com does not include http://example.com. Because the host is also part of the prefix, it does not include https://www.example.com or https://m.example.com. A path prefix is narrower still: https://example.com/pets/ can include pages below /pets/, but not pages elsewhere on the host. Google’s URL-prefix property reference explains this terminology.
Do not confuse “domain-level” with “Domain property”
Google also uses the phrase domain-level property. A URL-prefix such as https://example.com may be described as domain-level because it represents a whole host, but it remains a URL-prefix property because it specifies a protocol. The DNS-verified example.com entry is the distinct Domain property type. Google’s domain-level property explanation separates these terms.
Domain property vs. URL-prefix property at a glance
| Decision factor | Domain property | URL-prefix property |
|---|---|---|
| Entry format | Domain name only, such as example.com |
Protocol plus host, with an optional path, such as https://example.com/pets/ |
| Protocols covered | All protocols for the selected domain and its subdomains | Only the protocol written in the prefix |
| Subdomains covered | Subdomains below the entered domain | Only the host written in the prefix |
| Path coverage | All paths in the covered domain and subdomains | Only paths beginning with the entered prefix |
| Verification requirement | DNS record verification is required | Several eligible methods may be available, including DNS, an HTML tag or a file upload |
| Best fit | One aggregate view for an entire domain family | A specific protocol, host, subfolder or non-DNS verification situation |
| When multiple variants are needed | One property can aggregate them when they belong to the entered domain | Each distinct protocol or host prefix requires its own property for separate coverage |
These scope and verification differences are set out in Google’s property setup guidance. The table describes reporting coverage; it does not imply that one property is a ranking advantage over the other.
Which property should you choose?
Choose a Domain property for an organization-wide view
Use a Domain property when your question is, “How is everything under this domain performing?” It is the practical default for a site that operates several subdomains, has migrated from HTTP to HTTPS, or wants one place to inspect paths without maintaining a list of variants.

For example, entering example.com can bring the main site, a www host, a mobile subdomain and their folders into one property, provided those hosts are under the entered domain. That makes an aggregate view possible without adding a separate property for every protocol and subdomain.
The trade-off is access: you must be able to create the DNS verification record for the domain. If your team cannot reach the DNS provider or does not control the zone, the broad option may not be immediately usable.
Choose a URL-prefix property for a deliberate boundary
Use a URL-prefix property when the reporting boundary itself matters. Typical examples include:
- Monitoring only the production HTTPS host while excluding an HTTP site or another subdomain.
- Separating a documentation area such as
https://example.com/docs/from the rest of the site. - Giving a team access to one host or folder without presenting data for every subdomain.
- Using an HTML tag or verification file because DNS access is unavailable.
This precision is useful, but it creates administration work. If you later need the HTTP version, a www host and a mobile host, each distinct prefix must be added separately. A path property also follows the literal prefix, so entering https://example.com/pets/ is not a shortcut for the whole domain.
Use both when broad and narrow questions coexist
Adding a Domain property does not prevent you from adding URL-prefix properties. A common arrangement is one DNS-verified Domain property for the overall domain and additional URL-prefix properties for a subdomain, protocol or business area that needs focused reporting.

Verification: what access you need
Domain properties require DNS verification
Google requires a DNS record to verify ownership of a Domain property. The verification flow gives you a record to add at the authoritative DNS provider for the domain. You need permission to create that record, or cooperation from whoever administers the DNS zone.
If your site is managed by a separate registrar, hosting company or IT department, ask for the exact record value generated by Search Console and have the responsible administrator add it. Do not substitute a record copied from another property; the value is tied to the verification request.
URL-prefix properties can offer other methods
URL-prefix properties support multiple verification methods when your site and account are eligible. Google documents DNS, an HTML tag and an uploaded verification file among the available methods in its site ownership verification guide.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- HTML tag: you must be able to edit the HTML source of the relevant page, and that page must be publicly accessible. The tag belongs in the page source Google checks.
- HTML file upload: you place the file supplied by Google at the required location on the verified host and leave it accessible.
- DNS: this may also be offered for a URL-prefix property, but the exact options shown depend on the property and your setup.
Verification proves that you control the property. It does not change the URL scope you entered; a successful HTML-tag verification for https://example.com/ still does not extend coverage to an unlisted subdomain or protocol.
How to add a Domain property
- Open Search Console and choose “Add property.” In the property selector, start the property setup flow.
- Select “Domain.” Enter the domain without
http://,https://, a path or a trailing page name. For example, useexample.com, nothttps://www.example.com/. - Copy the DNS record shown by Google. Search Console identifies the record type and value needed for ownership verification.
- Add the record at your DNS provider. Preserve the host/name and value exactly as displayed. DNS interfaces may label the host field differently, so use the provider’s instructions if it asks whether the domain is appended automatically.
- Return to Search Console and select “Verify.” If the record has not propagated, wait and try again later rather than creating a different value.
- Choose the new property from the property selector. Once verified, use it for reports covering the domain, its subdomains and its protocols.
Google’s setup instructions and comparison table are available in Add a website or platform property to Search Console. The exact DNS interface is controlled by your DNS provider, not Search Console.
How to add a URL-prefix property
- Open “Add property” in Search Console.
- Select “URL-prefix.” Enter the full beginning of the URL, including the protocol. Use the canonical scope you intend to monitor, such as
https://example.com/orhttps://example.com/docs/. - Check the boundary before continuing. Confirm that the protocol, host and path are exactly right. A typo can create a valid but empty or unexpectedly narrow property.
- Select an offered verification method. Choose DNS, an HTML tag, a file upload or another method shown as available for your site.
- Complete the method’s prerequisite. Place the tag in the page source, upload the supplied file to the specified location, or add the DNS record, depending on your selection.
- Click “Verify.” Keep the tag or file in place after verification if that method requires it for continued ownership.
- Add separate prefixes for separate variants. If you need both
https://example.com/andhttps://www.example.com/, add each host explicitly. Do the same for an HTTP version or a different subfolder.
The prefix is a literal reporting boundary. For instance, https://example.com/pets/ can include deeper URLs such as https://example.com/pets/cats/, but it does not include https://example.com/blog/ or the same /pets/ path on another host.

What happens to data after you add a property?
Google says data collection begins when a property is added to an account, even before ownership verification is complete. Verification establishes ownership and access; it is not the event that starts collecting the property’s data.
Reports may take a few days to populate. If you see no data, first check that the property text matches the actual site variant: protocol, host and path. A URL-prefix property entered with http:// will not show the same scope as one entered with https://, and a subdomain prefix will not show the parent host.
Adding a property is an organizational action in Search Console. Google states that it does not change how Search handles the website. It does not redirect visitors, modify your robots rules or create a ranking signal by itself.
Google-hosted properties, including eligible Google Sites or Blogger properties, may be verified automatically when you are signed in to the account that manages the property. The verification options displayed in your account are the authoritative list for that property.
Common scope mistakes and how to correct them
Entering a URL in the Domain field
Symptom: you try to create a Domain property with https://example.com or a path. Fix: switch to the Domain option and enter only example.com. If you intentionally need the HTTPS host or a folder, use URL-prefix instead.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsAssuming a URL-prefix covers every subdomain
Symptom: a property for https://example.com/ does not show pages from https://www.example.com/ or https://m.example.com/. Fix: add the relevant host prefixes, or use a verified Domain property for an aggregate view.
Best Value
Forgetting the protocol after an HTTPS migration
Symptom: an older http://example.com/ URL-prefix property does not represent the HTTPS site. Fix: add and verify the HTTPS prefix. Keep the HTTP property if you need to inspect its historical or residual URLs; do not assume the protocol is interchangeable.
Using a path that is too narrow
Symptom: a folder property contains fewer URLs than expected. Fix: compare the entered path with the actual URL structure, including spelling and slash placement. Create a broader host prefix or Domain property when the reporting question is not limited to that folder.
Expecting immediate reports
Symptom: a newly added property appears empty. Fix: confirm the exact scope, complete verification where required and allow Google time to populate data. Google notes that data can take a few days to appear.
Practical configurations by site type
One small site on one host
If you control DNS, a Domain property is usually the simplest long-term choice because it remains useful if you add a www host, a staging-related subdomain that you want included, or additional paths. If DNS access is not available, create a URL-prefix property for the live protocol and host using an eligible alternative verification method.
A site with multiple subdomains
Use a Domain property for the owner or SEO team that needs the combined picture. Add URL-prefix properties for subdomains whose performance must be reviewed separately, such as documentation, support or commerce. The subdomain property should use the exact protocol and host that the team operates.
A migration from HTTP to HTTPS
A Domain property can aggregate both protocols under the domain. With URL-prefix properties, add the HTTP and HTTPS prefixes separately if you need coverage for both variants. This explicit setup prevents the assumption that an HTTPS prefix automatically includes HTTP URLs.
A large site with delegated teams
Keep a Domain property for people responsible for the whole domain, then create URL-prefix properties for folders or hosts that require focused access and analysis. Document each property’s exact prefix so team members do not mistake a narrow report for a domain-wide result.

- Do you need every protocol, subdomain and path under one domain in one view? If yes, choose a Domain property, provided you can verify DNS. If no, continue to the second question.
- Must the report stop at a particular protocol, host or folder, or do you lack DNS access? If yes, choose a URL-prefix property and verify it with an available method. If both broad and narrow views matter, add both.
This approach keeps the property scope aligned with the report you are trying to read. It also avoids creating a collection of narrow properties merely to reproduce the aggregate coverage that a Domain property provides.
Bottom line
Choose a Domain property for the broadest, lowest-maintenance view of a domain and its subdomains, protocols and paths when DNS verification is available. Choose a URL-prefix property for exact protocol, host or folder boundaries, or when an HTML tag or file upload is the practical verification route. Search Console permits both, so the strongest setup is often one Domain property for the whole organization plus URL-prefix properties for the segments that need their own reporting.
