If you are signed in to a Google Account, open My Ad Center, choose Off beside Personalized ads, and confirm. If you are signed out, open Google Ad Settings, select Search, switch Personalized ads on Google Search off, and confirm.
The setting changes how Google selects ads; it does not remove advertising, erase Search history, or disable every form of personalization. The signed-in control applies across Google services on devices where that account is signed in. The signed-out control applies to the browser or device where you change it.

Choose the right Google Search ad setting
Google provides two procedures because it stores the preference differently depending on whether you are using a Google Account. Start by identifying which situation applies to you:
Recommended Free Tools
| Situation | Where to change the setting | Scope Google describes |
|---|---|---|
| Signed in to a Google Account | My Ad Center → Personalized ads → choose Off → confirm | Ads on Google services across devices where you are signed in |
| Signed out and changing Search ads | Google Ad Settings → Search → Personalized ads on Google Search → switch off → confirm | Search ads for the current browser or device |
These are separate controls rather than two views of one universal switch. Turning off the account-level option does not mean every browser, device, website, or advertising platform will behave identically. Conversely, a signed-out change is not a change to your Google Account on other devices.

Turn off personalized ads while signed in
Use this procedure when your Google Account is active in the browser or app. Google says the choice applies to ads on its services across devices where that account is signed in.
- Open My Ad Center while signed in to the Google Account you want to manage.
- Find the Personalized ads control.
- Select Off.
- Confirm the selection when Google asks you to save the change.
The account-level setting governs whether Google uses information and activity saved to that account, along with choices made in My Ad Center, to personalize ads. It is the appropriate control when you want one account preference to follow you between signed-in devices.
Turn personalization back on
Return to My Ad Center, select On beside Personalized ads, and confirm. Re-enabling the switch allows the account information and activity categories that Google makes available for ad personalization to be used again, subject to the choices shown in My Ad Center.
Turn off personalized Search ads while signed out
Use this route when you are not signed in and want to change Search advertising for the browser or device in use.
- Open Google Ad Settings.
- Select Search.
- Locate Personalized ads on Google Search.
- Switch the control off.
- Confirm the change.
Google describes this signed-out preference as applying to the current browser or device. It is not an account-wide setting. If you use another browser, clear site data, switch devices, or sign in later, the result can differ.
When the signed-out control is unavailable
Google says the control may not be available when the browser or device blocks the cookies needed to save the preference. Check the browser’s cookie and site-data settings, allow the relevant Google site data long enough to save the choice, then reload Google Ad Settings. Privacy settings that automatically delete cookies can also make a signed-out choice difficult to retain.

What turning personalization off actually changes
Turning off personalized ads tells Google not to use information and activity saved to your Google Account, or choices made in My Ad Center, to personalize ads. It changes the inputs used for ad selection; it does not create an ad-free Search page.
Ads can still match the current search
Google may continue to use contextual signals. Your current search is one example: someone who searches for earrings may still see an earring advertisement even after asking to see fewer jewelry ads. The ad can be relevant to the words being searched without being selected from a long-term account profile.
Other contextual factors can also influence an ad, including the setting Google identifies as your location. Therefore, an ad that appears after personalization is disabled is not proof that the account switch failed.
Ads do not disappear
The switch limits personalized selection; it does not remove sponsored results or other advertising from Google Search. Search may still show ads when advertisers have relevant campaigns for the query, location, or other contextual conditions.
It does not delete Search history
Ad personalization and data retention are different controls. Turning off personalized ads does not delete your Google Search history or other saved account activity. If you want to review or remove activity, use Google’s separate account data controls rather than the ad switch.
Personalized ads, ad topics, and brand preferences are different controls
My Ad Center offers more than one way to influence advertising. Choosing the control that matches your goal avoids expecting a setting to do something it was not designed to do.
| Control | What it is for | What it cannot promise |
|---|---|---|
| Personalized ads | Stops Google from using saved account information, activity, and My Ad Center choices to personalize ads when switched off. | It does not remove ads or prevent contextual ads based on a current search or location. |
| Ad topics and brands | Expresses a preference for seeing fewer ads related to selected topics or brands. | It does not block every related ad. A relevant ad can still appear after a related search. |
| Sensitive-topic limits | Lets you limit ads about certain sensitive topics where the option is offered. | It is not a universal block for all related content or all advertising systems. |
| Search recommendations | Controls personalized recommendations in Google Search. | It is separate from ad personalization; changing ad activity use does not turn recommendations off. |
Why a “fewer ads” topic choice is not a block
Topic and brand preferences communicate a lower-interest signal, not a deny list. Google explicitly explains that customizing ads does not block ad topics or brands. If you search for a related product, the query itself can make a corresponding ad relevant even when you selected “fewer” for that topic or brand.

How the signed-in and signed-out settings differ in practice
Use the signed-in setting for an account-wide preference
If you regularly use the same Google Account on a phone, tablet, and computer, the My Ad Center switch is the more consistent choice. Google says it applies across Google services on devices where you are signed in. You still need to check which account is active before changing it, especially in a browser with multiple profiles.
Use the signed-out setting for a shared or temporary browser
A signed-out setting is useful when you do not want to sign in, or when you are adjusting Search ads only for a particular browser or device. Because the preference is tied to that browsing environment, another person using a different browser or device may see different ad behavior.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDo not assume one setting overwrites the other everywhere
The two scopes explain why testing on a second device can produce a different result. An account preference and a local signed-out preference are not interchangeable. Record which route you used if you are troubleshooting later.
Why you may still see personalized-looking ads
Several normal conditions can make an ad appear tailored even after you turn the switch off.
- Contextual relevance: The words in your current Search query can directly match the advertised product or service.
- Location: Google identifies location as another factor that can shape what appears.
- Scope mismatch: You changed a signed-out browser setting but are now signed in, or you changed one account while viewing another.
- Separate recommendations: Search recommendations may remain personalized because they use a different control.
- Topic preference limits: Choosing fewer ads about a topic or brand reduces frequency but does not block all related ads.
- Other advertising systems: The Google ad settings do not govern ads delivered by unrelated ad platforms.
- Partner-site or app behavior: Effects on Google partner sites and apps can depend on browser or device settings.
Troubleshoot the setting step by step
The switch appears on, or the change did not save
- Check whether you are signed in. If so, verify the active Google Account before opening My Ad Center.
- If you are signed out, make sure you are changing the Search section and the specific Personalized ads on Google Search control.
- Confirm the selection rather than closing the page immediately after toggling it.
- Reload the settings page and check the displayed state.
- If the signed-out control is missing or resets, review cookie and site-data blocking for the browser or device.
The setting works on one device but not another
First identify which procedure you used. A signed-out change is local to the browser or device. An account-level change should follow the account to Google services on other devices where you are signed in, but a different active account will have its own settings. Sign out of extra profiles or switch to the intended account before checking again.
You still see ads for a topic you limited
Review whether you changed a topic or brand preference rather than the global personalized-ads switch. A “fewer” preference is not a block, and a current search can still make the ad contextually relevant. The presence of that ad alone does not show that the setting failed.

You expected Search recommendations to change
Open Google’s separate Search recommendations control. Google documents recommendations as distinct from ad personalization, so disabling activity use for ads does not disable personalized Search suggestions or recommendations.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What these settings do not cover
Google’s controls concern Google’s own ad-personalization choices and the scopes described above. They do not act as a master switch for every advertisement you encounter online.
Unrelated ad platforms
Ads served by an unrelated advertising platform are outside Google’s ad settings. Turning off Google’s personalized-ads option cannot change how another platform selects or displays its ads.
Google partner sites and apps
Google notes that the effect on partner sites and apps can depend on browser or device settings. A preference that changes Search on Google does not guarantee identical behavior in every third-party site or application that uses advertising technology.
Browser and device privacy controls
Cookie blocking, automatic site-data deletion, private browsing modes, and similar settings can affect whether a signed-out preference is available or retained. These controls operate at the browser or device layer and should be considered separately from My Ad Center.
A practical decision guide
| Your goal | Use this control | Expected result |
|---|---|---|
| Stop Google Account information and activity from personalizing ads | My Ad Center → Personalized ads → Off | Account-level ad personalization is disabled on Google services across signed-in devices. |
| Change Search advertising without signing in | Google Ad Settings → Search → Personalized ads on Google Search → off | The preference applies to the current browser or device. |
| See fewer ads about a subject or brand | My Ad Center topic or brand controls | Frequency may decrease, but related ads can still appear. |
| Change personalized Search suggestions or recommendations | Google’s separate Search recommendations setting | Search recommendations change independently of ad personalization. |
| Remove ads entirely | None of these controls | Not provided; Google Search can still show ads. |
Before and after: realistic examples
Example 1: Signed-in user on several devices
You turn Personalized ads off in My Ad Center while signed in to your Google Account. On another phone where that same account is signed in, Google services should use the account-level preference. Searching for “silver earrings” can still produce an earring ad because the query is a contextual signal.
Best Value
Example 2: Signed-out user on a shared laptop
You open Google Ad Settings without signing in, select Search, turn off Personalized ads on Google Search, and confirm. The change applies to that laptop’s current browser. A different browser profile or another device is not automatically covered.
Example 3: Fewer ads about jewelry
You use a topic preference to request fewer jewelry ads. Google can reduce their frequency, but a jewelry ad may still appear after a jewelry-related query. That outcome is consistent with a preference control rather than a blocking control.

You disable activity use for ads and continue seeing personalized Search recommendations. That is expected because recommendations have their own setting and are not switched off by the ad-personalization control.
Privacy expectations and limitations
The most precise way to describe the setting is: Google will not use information and activity saved to your Google Account, or your My Ad Center choices, to show personalized ads when the personalized-ads switch is off. This statement does not say that Google stops processing every piece of data, that all personalization disappears, or that every advertising partner follows the same rule.
For a broader privacy review, inspect the individual information and activity categories shown in Google’s account and My Ad Center controls. The ad switch is one decision in that larger set, not a substitute for reviewing Search history, location controls, cookies, or activity retention.
Interface changes and availability
Google can rename or rearrange settings, and availability can vary by account, browser, device, or region. Look for the labels My Ad Center, Personalized ads, Search, and Personalized ads on Google Search. If a label differs, use the setting’s on-page explanation to verify whether it controls account-wide ads, signed-out Search ads, topics and brands, or Search recommendations before saving a change.
