What does Google require when publishers use AI-generated content?
Google Search Central says generative models predict likely word sequences from their training data rather than retrieve verified facts. Their output can therefore contain inaccuracies. Its guidance says it is critical to manually fact-check and review AI-generated content for accuracy and trustworthiness before publishing.
The instruction applies to more than the visible article. Google explicitly includes title elements, meta descriptions, structured data, and image alt text among the content publishers should review. For structured data, Google also says to follow its general and feature-specific guidelines and validate the markup.

The Search Central changelog dates this documentation change to October 1, 2026, and says it brings the guidance into line with presentations at developer events. The update is a review requirement in Google’s guidance, not a ban on using AI. Google says AI can help with research and adding structure to original content. It warns that generating many pages without adding value for users may violate its scaled content abuse policy. The guidance also says Search Quality Rater Guidelines are not a recipe for ranking first and that rater scores do not directly affect rankings.

Does Gemini add UTM tags to links?
UTM-tagged Gemini links have been observed, but the available evidence does not establish a universal behavior. Search Engine Journal reported that a Reddit user found UTM parameters on Gemini links and that Google Search liaison John Mueller replied that he saw them too. One user in the thread described seeing > when asking Gemini for source links. That observation is not a published Google specification, and other explanations in the discussion remain user reports.
In the thread, Mueller asked whether Gemini also passes a referrer that sites can already track and offered to forward reproducible details to Google’s team. His comments show that he saw the tags; they do not explain the conditions that trigger them or confirm that all Gemini links receive them. Google has not documented those conditions in the reporting cited here.

How should analytics teams measure Gemini traffic?
Compare sessions attributed through Gemini UTM query strings with sessions identified through referrer values. Neither signal is established as complete, so keep the two views distinct rather than assuming one captures every visit.
- Inspect landing-page URLs for Gemini-related UTM parameters, including
utm_source=geminiwhere present. - Inspect referrer values for the same landing sessions, and note when a referrer is absent or does not identify Gemini.
- Compare the UTM-attributed and referrer-attributed sessions in your analytics reporting, keeping the attribution method visible in each view.
- Document the date range and measurement rules used so later reports can be compared on the same basis.
The cited discussion supplies no measured coverage rate. It does not establish that Gemini always adds a UTM tag, always strips referrers, or that any particular share of app traffic is misattributed. Mueller’s Reddit replies are public comments, not a technical specification.

What does the Q2 2026 CTR comparison show—and what does it not show?
Search Engine Journal summarized an Advanced Web Ranking report comparing Q2 2026 with Q1. It reported opposite-direction changes for desktop and mobile at organic positions one and two combined:

These are figures from the report as summarized by Search Engine Journal, not a forecast for a particular site or evidence that a specific Google change caused the movement. Google Search Console recorded an impressions logging error from May 13, 2025, through April 27, 2026. Because the Q1-to-Q2 comparison crosses the date that issue ended, the measured difference may reflect a measurement break as well as changes in user behavior. Treat the desktop/mobile contrast as a reported comparison, not a clean causal result.

AI Mode information monitoring
The roundup reports that Robby Stein announced a global rollout of AI Mode information monitoring on September 28, 2026, following access for Google AI Ultra and Pro subscribers. The examples it describes focus on local topics and shopping. The public announcement, as reported, did not explain how Search selects sources for updates, so the rollout report does not resolve that question.
Penske Media and Chegg antitrust complaints
Search Engine Journal reported that U.S. District Judge Amit Mehta dismissed the complaints on September 30, 2026. According to that account, the ruling found, among other things, that the plaintiffs had not plausibly alleged Google exchanged search traffic for their content. The roundup says the ruling did not order changes to Google Search or AI Overviews. This is secondary reporting; the court document was not available in the cited material, so the account should not be treated as a substitute for the order in detailed legal analysis.
