Google’s haircut example is a planned use for Gemini in Chrome, not proof that the AI has already booked a real person’s appointment. In a September 18, 2025 announcement, Google said the browser assistant would be able to handle web tasks such as booking a haircut or ordering groceries in the coming months. The company did not identify a salon, booking partner, completed appointment, or success rate.
What Google announced about the haircut example
Google described agentic browsing in Gemini for Chrome: the assistant would interact with web pages on a user’s behalf, and the user could stop it at any time. The haircut was an example of a task the planned capability might handle, not a documented transaction. Google’s announcement did not specify how salon selection, appointment availability, payment, or final confirmation would work for that task. Google’s September 18, 2025 announcement also did not give a haircut-booking launch date or publish performance statistics.

That distinction matters: being able to operate a web page is not the same as demonstrating that an appointment has been successfully booked. The announcement supports the first claim as a plan; it does not establish the second as an event.

What Search AI Mode can do today, according to Google Help
Google Search Help, checked September 28, 2026, describes a distinct way to find local appointment availability and pricing. You enter what you need; Search may ask follow-up questions, then lets you review the request and select “Looks good” before proceeding. If a business has not posted the needed details online, Google says it may call to ask for them. Only details you shared and confirmed are provided to businesses. To request online research only, type “don’t call.” Google’s help page says online results can take a few minutes and call results may take up to 30 minutes; that is an estimate for Search call results, not a Chrome-agent booking time.

The same help page says the feature is for signed-in users over 18, in English, on desktop and mobile Search. Its list of country availability is specifically for dining reservations, so it should not be treated as a country list for local appointment requests. Availability and participating businesses may change.
The haircut-booking idea predates Gemini in Chrome
Google has previously described appointment scheduling by phone through Duplex, an Assistant technology. In a May 8, 2018 post, Google said salon appointments were among the tasks it planned to test. The post also said Duplex could signal a human operator when it could not complete a task autonomously, such as an unusually complex appointment. That history shows an earlier phone-based approach; it is not evidence that the later Chrome agent was live or had booked a specific haircut. Google Research’s Duplex post characterized the system’s capabilities in Google’s own words, not through an independent evaluation.

So, can Google’s AI book a haircut for you?
It depends which Google product you mean. Google announced a future web-page agent for Gemini in Chrome and used haircut booking as an example, but the announcement did not show a completed booking or detail the transaction. Search AI Mode has a separately documented process for finding appointment information and calling businesses with user review and approval. Google Assistant has its own older scheduling documentation for the United States and English, and says the feature is not available for every business or service. Assistant Help describes providing service and timing details, then scheduling an open slot and sending confirmation, with alternatives possible when a requested slot is unavailable.
