The update brings several shared features, but Dynamic Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) is reported to be exclusive to Pixel Buds Pro 2. Availability is gradual, so check the Pixel Buds app rather than assuming the firmware has reached your earbuds.
Which Pixel Buds get each feature?
The October 6 report describes release_6.144 as covering all three listed models, with one feature limited to Pro 2. Google had previewed some of the changes in August; the specific allocation below is based on the October report, not a complete Google-published changelog.

Dynamic ANC is a Pro 2 feature
Dynamic ANC is designed to respond when the earbuds’ seal changes, adjusting audio or noise cancellation accordingly. The October report says it is exclusive to Pixel Buds Pro 2; it does not establish that the original Pro or 2a receive it. Google previewed the feature in its August 12, 2026 announcement.
#1 Best Overall
- Google Pixel Buds Pro 2 are designed to be the most comfortable earbuds yet, with a twist-to-adjust fit; they’re built for Gemini, with the Tensor chip that powers premium, immersive sound and cancels twice as much noise as before[1]
- Pixel Buds Pro 2 are made to stay put; use the twist-to-adjust stabilizer to lock your earbuds in during workouts, or adjust the other way for all-day comfort
- Active Noise Cancellation with Silent Seal 2.0 cancels up to twice as much noise as before[1]; Adaptive Audio lets you be aware of your surroundings while drowning out distractions in loud spaces for comfortable listening[10]
- Immerse yourself in clear, crisp audio; the 11 mm drivers and high-frequency chamber deliver powerful bass and smooth treble, and spatial audio with head tracking give you immersive surround sound[2]
- Go live with Gemini, your Google AI assistant; brainstorm ideas, make grocery lists, and schedule events, just by using your voice – with advanced audio processing, you can have clear conversations, even in noisy environments[2,11]
Tap to Mute depends on a Pixel phone
The reported call control lets you mute or unmute the microphone with an earbud tap. It requires the earbuds to be paired with a Pixel phone, so installing the firmware alone does not remove that device requirement.
Sleep sync uses Pixel Watch sleep sensing
When Pixel Watch sensing detects that you have fallen asleep, the reported behavior can pause media, disable touch gestures, and silence notifications. Google also previewed this interaction in August. The feature therefore depends on Pixel Watch sleep sensing, not just on the earbuds.
Rank #2
- Google Pixel Buds Pro 2 are designed to be the most comfortable earbuds ever, with the most secure fit; and they’re built for Google AI, with the Tensor chip that powers premium, immersive sound
- Pixel Buds Pro 2 are small, light, and made to stay put; use the twist-to-adjust stabilizer to lock your earbuds in during workouts, or adjust the other way for all-day comfort
- The first Google Tensor chip in an earbud, the Tensor A1 chip powers twice the Active Noise Cancellation and delivers premium sound[1]
- Conversation Detection pauses your music and switches your earbuds to Transparency mode when you start talking, so you don’t have to take them out
- Pixel Buds Pro 2 have large 11mm drivers for powerful bass and a new high-frequency chamber for smooth treble
Live Translate and Gemini controls are different
The October report says Enhanced Live Translate can be started with an earbud touch and uses Google Translate. Separately, Google’s August post described Gemini settings control, such as asking, “Hey Google, turn up the bass.” The October report also says the companion app update lets users enable touch controls and adjust settings with Gemini voice commands. These app and voice-control changes should not be confused with the firmware’s Live Translate feature.

Does this change the support life of each model?
No. Google’s support page lists security-update coverage, which is separate from eligibility for feature updates like release_6.144. Google says Pixel Buds receive security updates for at least three years from the date Google begins selling them through the US Google Store. Its current table lists these minimum dates:
| Model | Google-listed security updates through at least |
|---|---|
| Pixel Buds Pro | September 2025 |
| Pixel Buds Pro 2 | September 2027 |
| Pixel Buds 2a | September 2028 |
These dates come from Google’s Pixel Buds security-update policy and table; the page does not display a publication date. They do not promise every feature update through those dates.
