Short answer: Google Reader Revenue Manager (RRM) is best suited to an established digital publication that wants subscriptions or contributions, registration and newsletter prompts, surveys, rewarded ads, and Google ecosystem integrations on its own web pages. It is not a direct substitute for every membership product. Ghost is the stronger fit for a branded publishing site with native memberships, Patreon for hosted creator memberships and community, and Substack for a newsletter-first paid publication.
The right choice depends on your editorial model, control of the website and audience relationship, payment administration, country eligibility, paywall requirements, and total fees—not simply the headline percentage.

What Google Reader Revenue Manager is
Google describes Reader Revenue Manager as a publisher-oriented web service for increasing reader engagement, generating reader revenue, and optimizing ad monetization. Its documented tools include subscriptions, one-time contributions, registration walls, newsletter signups, surveys, rewarded ads, optimized checkout using Google Pay, and subscription linking. The product is designed to add conversion prompts and payment flows to a publication’s existing desktop and mobile web pages rather than to replace every part of a publishing stack.
Google’s product documentation is the best starting point for the feature scope: Reader Revenue Manager documentation. Google says that a linked subscription can be surfaced on Google properties with a “Subscribed” distinction. That is a product capability claim; it is not a guarantee of higher traffic, retention, or revenue.

What RRM can sell or prompt
- Subscriptions: recurring paid access configured as a publication offer.
- Contributions: voluntary payments for readers who want to support the publication without taking a conventional subscription.
- Registration: a registration wall that asks readers to create an account or identify themselves before continuing.
- Newsletter signups: prompts designed to turn anonymous visitors into reachable subscribers.
- Surveys: questions that can collect reader feedback or inform engagement decisions.
- Rewarded ads: an option to exchange a reader action for an ad-supported experience, subject to the account’s eligibility and implementation.
This combination makes RRM broader than a checkout widget. It addresses the sequence from anonymous visit to registration, newsletter relationship, contribution or subscription, and advertising interaction.
How RRM differs from a membership platform
A membership platform normally supplies a fuller operating environment: member accounts, a branded site or hosted creator page, publishing workflows, community features, and payment administration. RRM concentrates on monetization and engagement prompts that a digital publisher places on its own site. Your CMS, authentication model, editorial workflow, analytics, email system, and customer-support process still matter.
That distinction affects the buying decision. A newspaper, magazine, broadcaster, or specialist publication with an existing website may value RRM’s prompts and Google integrations. A writer starting from a blank site may prefer a product that bundles the website, publishing workflow, member accounts, and checkout. Neither approach is universally better; they solve different operational problems.
RRM requirements and setup path
Google’s Publisher Center help says a publisher needs a publication in Publisher Center and a payments profile for monetization. Bank details are required to receive payments. The setup guidance is documented in Google’s Publisher Center instructions.
- Create or verify the publication in Publisher Center. Confirm the publication identity, web properties, and the account that will administer it.
- Set up the payments profile. Add the required business and bank information so money can be paid out. The legal entity, tax treatment, currency, and payout country should match the account owner.
- Check country and feature eligibility. RRM has different availability by country. Some locations support monetization, while others support only engagement features. Verify the current country list and the exact feature before promising a launch date.
- Choose the reader action. Decide whether the first prompt should request registration, a newsletter signup, a contribution, or a paid subscription. A publication can use more than one, but each prompt should have a clear purpose.
- Create a pricing plan. The plan editor supports recurring monthly, quarterly, half-yearly, and annual periods. Trials can be absent or set to 7, 14, 30, or 60 days, and discounts can be configured. The current plan-editor details are in Google’s pricing-plan help.
- Configure the offer and checkout. Set the price, billing period, description, trial or discount, and the content or prompt behavior. Test the purchase and cancellation path with an account that represents the target country.
- Place the implementation on the site. Add the required RRM code and connect the publication’s content rules. WordPress publishers can use Site Kit: its RRM integration documentation says Site Kit can place the snippet automatically for prompts such as newsletter signup, surveys, registration, and contributions.
- Run a complete reader journey test. Test an anonymous visit, registration, trial, paid renewal, failed payment, cancellation, contribution, and newsletter signup on both desktop and mobile. Verify that the correct content is available after each state change.
RRM plans, targeting, and documented limits
Google’s product page distinguishes Standard and Enterprise tiers and mentions advanced capabilities such as flexible pricing, bundles, subscriber linking, customizable payment reminders, and cancellation surveys. Google does not present those capabilities as universally available to every publisher, so confirm the entitlement for the specific account in the current product documentation or sales process: Reader Revenue Manager product page.
The plan-editor help currently documents two important limitations. Location targeting is unsupported, so you should not assume that RRM can automatically show different offers by reader geography. Subscriber-specific retargeting is also unsupported. If your commercial strategy depends on those functions, you may need another system or a separate marketing stack.

Country availability is not uniform. A country may allow registration or newsletter engagement while not allowing the same country to receive monetized subscriptions or contributions. Treat eligibility as a launch prerequisite, not as a detail to discover after the site is coded.

What RRM costs
Google Publisher Center help reports a 5% per-transaction charge including credit-card fees. The help page does not establish that this rate is permanent or universal: fees and availability can change by country, account, product terms, or date. Check the live terms for the publisher’s account before publishing a price or financial forecast.
Use the 5% figure as a documented Google setup charge, not as a complete statement of every possible cost. You may still have expenses for the CMS, hosting, email, tax handling, customer support, development, analytics, or other services in your publishing stack.
How the main alternatives are positioned
| Platform | Strongest documented orientation | Official fee information | Best comparison question |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Reader Revenue Manager | Digital publishers adding web subscriptions, contributions, registration and newsletter prompts, surveys, rewarded ads, and Google integrations | Google help reports 5% per transaction including card fees; verify current applicability | Do you already operate a publication and need reader-revenue prompts integrated into it? |
| Ghost with Stripe | Independent publishers running a branded site with native free or paid memberships | Ghost says it charges no transaction commission; Stripe processing still applies | Do you want site and membership control in one publishing system and are you willing to manage Stripe? |
| Patreon | Hosted creator memberships, community interaction, tiers, and one-time payments | Current standard platform fee is 10% of earnings, plus processing and possible other charges; legacy plans differ | Do you need a hosted creator community more than a publication-controlled website? |
| Substack | Newsletter-first publishing with paid subscriptions | 10% of subscription revenue plus Stripe processing, according to its support page | Is a simple paid newsletter the primary product? |
Ghost with Stripe: site ownership and native memberships
Ghost is oriented around an independent publishing site. Its official integration says Ghost Members can sell subscriptions through the publisher’s Stripe account and that Ghost takes no transaction fee or commission; Stripe processing fees remain separate. See Ghost’s Stripe integration page.
This model gives a publisher a branded web destination, control over the publishing workflow, and a direct connection between the membership record and its payment account. It is attractive when the website itself is the product: articles, podcasts, archives, member-only posts, and email can share one identity.

- Your priority is a branded site rather than a hosted creator profile.
- You want native free and paid membership features inside the publishing workflow.
- You are comfortable connecting Stripe and handling payment administration separately from the CMS.
- You need more control over site structure and member experience than a newsletter-only service usually provides.
Where RRM may be stronger
RRM may be a better fit when the publication already has a CMS and only needs conversion prompts, contributions, registration walls, surveys, rewarded ads, or Google ecosystem connections. Rebuilding that existing site solely to obtain memberships can create unnecessary migration work.

Patreon: hosted creator memberships and community
Patreon is designed for creators offering paid memberships, tiers, community interaction, and one-time payments. Its current pricing page lists a 10% standard platform fee, in addition to applicable processing, taxes, and other charges. The help center notes that creators on legacy plans may have different platform fees, so the standard figure applies to the relevant new-creator terms rather than every historical account. Review Patreon’s pricing page and fee guide.
The hosted approach can reduce the technical work involved in launching tiers and a member community. It also means the creator experience, account flow, and a significant part of the reader relationship live inside Patreon’s service. A publication that needs its own paywall logic, archive permissions, newsroom workflows, or first-party website navigation should map those requirements before choosing a hosted membership page.
Choose Patreon when
- Your offer is creator-centered: tiers, bonuses, community participation, or patron benefits.
- You want a hosted membership environment and are willing to accept the standard platform fee plus other charges.
- You do not need the publication’s own site to be the sole place where members manage their relationship.
Substack: newsletter-first paid publishing
Substack’s support article, updated September 29, 2026, says publishing is free. Paid subscriptions carry a 10% Substack fee plus Stripe processing. Writers can set monthly, annual, or founding-member prices. The current terms are described at Substack’s pricing help page.
Substack is strongest when the newsletter is the primary product and the publication wants a quick path from writing to paid email delivery. The trade-off is platform simplicity versus control. A publisher that needs a complex metered paywall, multiple content types, extensive site customization, registration prompts, contributions, surveys, or ad-reward journeys should compare those requirements directly with Substack’s current tools rather than assuming that a paid newsletter covers them.
Choose Substack when
- The core editorial unit is an email newsletter with a paid and free version.
- You value a managed publishing and payment workflow over deep control of the surrounding website.
- The 10% platform fee plus Stripe processing is acceptable for the convenience.
Fees: compare the whole transaction, not one percentage
Headline rates are not directly interchangeable. RRM’s documented 5% includes credit-card fees in the cited Google help guidance. Ghost advertises no Ghost commission but leaves Stripe processing separate. Patreon lists a 10% standard platform fee plus processing and possible other charges. Substack lists 10% plus Stripe processing.
For a simple illustration, on $1,000 of paid subscription revenue, a 5% charge would be $50 before any other publishing costs, while a 10% platform fee would be $100 before separate processing. That arithmetic does not predict your net payout: refunds, taxes, currency conversion, payment method mix, legacy terms, and country-specific rules can change the result. Use your actual transaction mix and the current account terms.

Also price the non-transaction work. A lower platform percentage can be outweighed by development, migration, support, analytics, email, or payment-reconciliation costs. A higher percentage may be rational if it replaces several services and materially reduces operational effort.

Ask where the reader account is created, who controls the checkout relationship, how export works, and what happens if you leave. On an existing publication using RRM, the website and editorial brand remain central, but the implementation still depends on Google’s product and payment terms. Ghost connects memberships to the publisher’s Stripe account. Patreon and Substack provide hosted reader experiences that simplify launch while making the platform a more visible part of the relationship.
Before signing up, document:
- Whether you can export subscriber identities, consent records, payment status, and cancellation history.
- Which system sends transactional emails and renewal notices.
- How refunds, failed payments, chargebacks, and tax receipts are handled.
- Whether your analytics can distinguish registration, trial, paid conversion, renewal, and cancellation.
- How content access behaves if the payment service or integration is unavailable.
Paywalls, contributions, and engagement paths
RRM supports several reader journeys, but each serves a different editorial goal. A registration wall lowers the barrier to an identified audience. A newsletter prompt creates a direct communication channel without demanding payment. A contribution asks for support while leaving access more open. A subscription creates recurring revenue and requires the clearest value proposition.
Do not present every prompt at once. Decide which action matches the article, section, or reader state. For example, a first-time visitor may see a newsletter invitation, a returning reader may be asked to register, and a loyal reader may receive a subscription offer. Because RRM documents no location targeting or subscriber-specific retargeting, design these journeys around content context and reader state that your implementation can actually support.
Common failure points and recovery steps
The account can collect registrations but not payments
Check country eligibility and the payments profile first. Engagement features can be available where monetization is not. Confirm bank details, legal entity information, and payout configuration before changing page code.
The offer appears with the wrong price or billing period
Review the plan editor’s currency, recurring period, trial, discount, and effective dates. Test as a new reader and as an existing subscriber; a discount or trial intended for one audience can otherwise appear in the wrong journey.
Best Value
WordPress prompts do not appear
Verify that Site Kit is connected to the correct publication and that the RRM service is enabled. Check consent, caching, script-blocking, and mobile templates. If the automatic snippet placement is unsuitable for a custom theme, use the documented integration approach and test a clean browser session.
A cancellation leaves content accessible
Separate payment status from access rules. Confirm what the site should do at the end of a paid period, after an immediate cancellation, and after a failed renewal. Test each state with a non-administrator account.
The platform percentage looks low but net revenue is disappointing
Recalculate using refunds, payment processing, taxes, support, email, migration, and development. Compare the total operating cost per paying reader, not just the platform line item.

A practical decision framework
| If your primary need is… | Start by evaluating… | Why |
|---|---|---|
| An existing digital publication adding subscriptions, contributions, registration, or engagement prompts | Google Reader Revenue Manager | It is built around publisher web pages and combines reader-revenue and engagement features. |
| A branded independent site with native memberships | Ghost with Stripe | The publishing site and member experience remain central, with no Ghost transaction commission. |
| Creator tiers and community in a hosted environment | Patreon | Its documented orientation is paid creator membership and community interaction. |
| A paid newsletter with minimal operational setup | Substack | Its workflow is centered on free and paid email publishing. |
Then verify six practical questions before committing:
- Does the service support your editorial model: publication paywall, newsletter, contribution, or creator membership?
- Is the required feature available in your country and account tier?
- Who owns and administers the website, reader account, checkout, and data export?
- What is the total cost after platform, card, Stripe, tax, refund, and operating expenses?
- Can your team implement and test the required prompts, access rules, and payment states?
- Can you migrate or recover the audience relationship if the product or terms change?
Bottom line: which platform should you choose?
Choose Google Reader Revenue Manager when you are a digital publisher with an existing web property and need a combination of subscriptions or contributions, registration and newsletter prompts, surveys, rewarded ads, and Google integrations. Validate country support, account-tier entitlements, and the current 5% transaction terms before launch.
Choose Ghost when control of a branded publishing site and native memberships matters most. Choose Patreon when hosted creator tiers and community are the product. Choose Substack when a paid newsletter is the central business and platform simplicity outweighs the need for a broader site and paywall system.
The decisive test is operational fit: map one reader from first visit through registration, payment, renewal, cancellation, support, and data export. The platform that handles that complete journey with acceptable control and total cost is the better choice for your publication.
