It does not build a site or replace your CMS. To accept payments, a publisher must first create a publication in Publisher Center, complete identity and organization checks, configure a Google Payments Center profile with bank details, create and publish a plan, and install the RRM snippet on the pages where prompts should appear.
Availability and payment support depend on the publisher’s country. Google documents a 5% transaction fee including credit-card fees, but its help page does not show a publication year or explain every country- or payment-method exception. This guide explains the complete setup path, the difference between subscriptions and contributions, WordPress installation choices, payment permissions, and the limits you should verify in your current Google account.

What Reader Revenue Manager does
RRM connects a publication in Google Publisher Center with configurable reader prompts. Depending on the feature and country, those prompts can ask readers to subscribe, make a contribution, register, join a newsletter, or answer a survey. Subscription checkout and contribution payments are the monetization features; registration, newsletter, survey, and other custom prompts are engagement features.
Publisher Center is the administration layer. It does not author articles, host pages, manage your editorial workflow, or replace WordPress or another CMS. Your site remains responsible for publishing content, while RRM supplies the prompt, payment flow, and related reader controls.

Subscription versus contribution
A subscription normally gives a reader continuing access or another defined benefit in exchange for recurring payment. A contribution also generally involves an exchange of value. Google uses that distinction deliberately: RRM does not process voluntary donations. A nonprofit can instead create a non-monetization custom call to action (CTA) that sends readers to its existing donation platform.
Eligibility and supported countries
Google says RRM is available in more than 40 countries, but the available features are not identical everywhere. The full-support list below is described as supporting subscription and contribution payments. The engagement-only list supports prompts such as registration, newsletters, surveys, or other non-payment interactions, but not monetization payments according to Google’s country page.
| Availability category | Countries listed by Google | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Full setup, including payments | Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, France, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong, Hungary, India, Indonesia, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Peru, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Slovakia, Slovenia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Turkey, Ukraine, United Kingdom, United States, and Vietnam | Subscription and contribution payment prompts can be configured, subject to account verification and payment requirements. |
| Engagement features only | Bangladesh, Dominican Republic, Malaysia, Pakistan, Paraguay, Thailand, and United Arab Emirates | Engagement prompts are supported; monetization payments are not supported according to the listed country status. |
Country support is time-sensitive. Check the current Google support page while onboarding rather than relying on an old list. Your publication’s country, payment profile, tax information, and bank location can all affect what appears in the interface.

- Personal or business information and identity or organization proof.
- A publication logo. Google recommends a PNG or JPEG at 1000 × 1000 pixels; 512 × 512 pixels is the stated minimum.
- A self-declared organization type: for-profit or nonprofit.
- A Google Payments Center payments profile connected to a Google Account.
- Bank details for payouts.
- Permission to edit the relevant site theme or template code so the RRM snippet can be installed.
What to prepare before opening the setup screen
Gather the administrative and technical items first. Doing so prevents a half-configured prompt from being published while payment verification or site access is still pending.
- Confirm the country. Decide whether you need payment features or only engagement features, then verify the current country status in Google’s documentation.
- Choose the organization owner. Use the Google Account that should own the publication and, where appropriate, the payments profile. Ownership in Publisher Center does not automatically grant every Payments Center permission.
- Prepare the logo and legal details. Have the square logo, organization information, and identity or registration documents ready.
- Decide the reader offer. Define what a subscriber receives, what a contributor receives, the price, billing period, trial policy, and whether a discount is needed.
- Identify the pages involved. Decide which articles remain open, which pages will be paywalled, and where engagement prompts should appear.
- Arrange CMS access. The installer needs permission to edit theme or template code. On WordPress, plan to use Site Kit or the documented WPCode alternative.
How to set up Reader Revenue Manager
1. Add the publication in Publisher Center
Create or select the publication that represents the site. RRM configuration is attached to this publication, so verify the name, country, organization type, and ownership before moving on.
2. Open Reader Revenue Manager
In Publisher Center, select the publication and open Reader Revenue Manager. Choose the first content-access prompt. You can add other prompts later, so start with the reader outcome you can explain most clearly.

Choose a non-monetization prompt for newsletter signup, registration, surveys, or a nonprofit CTA that points to an external donation service.

Set the price, currency and recurrence in the plan editor. Google documents monthly, quarterly, half-yearly, and annual recurring periods. Trial choices are no trial, 7 days, 14 days, 30 days, or 60 days. Readers are charged automatically when each billing period elapses.
New plans begin as drafts. A draft does not appear on the site; set the plan to Live after reviewing the offer and checkout details. Google’s examples of $10 monthly and $100 annually are illustrations, not recommendations or current market rates.
5. Create or connect the Payments Center profile
A payments profile is required to receive RRM payments. It can be a Business or Individual profile and must be tied to a Google Account. One profile can cover multiple publications belonging to the same organization. Add bank details before expecting payouts.
6. Complete verification
Submit the requested identity or organization evidence and payment information. For Indian publishers, Google states that a digital PAN card is not accepted as payment-profile verification proof; it asks for an original photograph or scanned copy of the physical PAN card.

Install the RRM code on the relevant pages, then test the prompt in a non-destructive way before making it prominent to readers. The installer needs access to edit the CMS theme or template code. The exact snippet depends on whether the content is open access, paywalled by product ID, or using an engagement feature.

8. Publish and test
Confirm that the plan is Live, the correct product ID is present, the prompt appears on the intended pages, and the checkout displays the expected price, recurrence, trial, and organization information. Test on a desktop and mobile layout, and verify that normal article reading still works for visitors who do not qualify for the prompt.
How RRM snippets target pages
Google distinguishes between an open-access snippet and a product-ID snippet. The distinction matters because placing the wrong code can cause a prompt not to load or can expose the wrong access behavior.
| Snippet approach | Where it goes | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| Open-access | Articles that remain open under a paywall, or all articles used for contributions and surveys | Show a contribution, survey, registration, newsletter, or similar prompt without identifying a paywalled product. |
| Product ID | Pages that should be paywalled for a particular subscription product | Associate the article or access rule with the exact live subscription plan. |
A live plan is required for the snippet to load correctly. If you change a plan or product ID, your CMS Sync code may also need updating. Keep a record of which product ID maps to each offer, especially if you run separate monthly, annual, introductory, or discounted plans.
Fees, prices, trials, and plan changes
The published transaction fee
Google’s getting-started help page states: “It’s just 5% per transaction, including credit card fees.” The retrieved page does not display a publication year. It also does not establish whether the percentage varies by geography, payment method, currency, contract, tax treatment, or a particular plan type. Treat 5% as Google’s published statement, then review the current terms and Payments Center information for your account.
Pricing and recurrence choices
Publishers choose the amount and billing period. The documented recurring options are monthly, quarterly, half-yearly, and annual. A trial can be omitted or set to 7, 14, 30, or 60 days. The reader is charged automatically when the selected period ends.
Discounts and editing live plans
Discounts can be configured for subscriptions. Google says most fields of a live plan can be edited, but the Product ID cannot be changed. Pricing edits to a live plan apply to new subscribers. The help documentation describes changes affecting current subscribers as future functionality, so do not assume that an edit will reprice an existing customer.

Before publishing a plan, write down the customer-facing promise, cancellation language, trial conversion date, tax display, and support contact. These operational details are not substitutes for Google’s payment terms, but they reduce confusion when a reader sees a charge after a trial.
Receiving payments and managing permissions
Publisher Center ownership and Payments Center authority are separate. A person who can edit a publication may still lack permission to change bank details, payout methods, tax information, or users on the payment profile. Grant those permissions explicitly in Payments Center to the administrators who need them.
What is established and what is not
- Google requires a Payments Center profile and bank details for receiving RRM payments.
- A single profile can support multiple publications in one organization.
- The available documentation reviewed here does not establish a universal payout schedule.
- It does not establish a universal minimum payout threshold.
- It does not establish identical fee treatment for every country or payment method.
For payout timing, thresholds, tax handling, and country-specific deductions, use the current Payments Center view and applicable Google terms for your payment profile. Do not promise readers or internal finance teams a payout date based only on the RRM setup screen.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.WordPress installation choices
Site Kit integration
Google recommends integrating RRM on WordPress through Site Kit. This route is appropriate when the site already uses Site Kit and the administrator can complete the connection and permission prompts. After connection, confirm that the correct publication and site are selected and that the generated configuration matches the live plan.
WPCode fallback
If Site Kit cannot be used, Google’s WordPress documentation describes adding the snippet through the third-party WPCode plugin. Insert the exact RRM code in the location recommended by the documentation, then clear caching layers and test an article page. Avoid placing duplicate snippets in both the theme and a plugin.

AMP limitation
Google’s WordPress documentation says not to use RRM if the entire site is built on AMP. If only part of a site uses AMP, confirm the current compatibility guidance before enabling prompts on those templates; do not assume that a configuration working on ordinary HTML pages will work on every AMP page.
Best Value
Choosing the right reader prompt
| Goal | Use | Payment required? | Reader expectation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Recurring access or defined subscriber benefits | Subscription CTA and a live recurring plan | Yes | Automatic billing at the selected interval, with any stated trial or discount. |
| One-time or supporter contribution with an exchange of value | Contribution CTA | Yes | A contribution in return for the value described by the publisher. |
| Voluntary charitable giving | Custom non-monetization CTA linking to the nonprofit’s existing donation platform | Not through RRM | The external donation service handles the gift and its receipt. |
| Audience growth or feedback | Newsletter signup, registration, survey, or other engagement prompt | No | A non-payment interaction with the publication. |
Nonprofit publishers should pay particular attention to the interface rules: Google says subscription and contribution CTAs are disabled in the nonprofit RRM interface. A custom CTA can still direct readers to an external donation platform.
Troubleshooting common setup failures
The prompt does not appear
- Check that the plan is set to Live, not Draft.
- Confirm that the snippet is installed on the page type intended for that prompt.
- Check that the product ID in the page configuration matches the live plan.
- Clear the CMS, server, CDN, and browser caches, then test in a private window.
- Inspect the page source to ensure the snippet was not removed by a theme update or optimization plugin.
Readers see the wrong offer
- Compare the page’s product ID with the plan you intended to sell.
- Check whether an old CMS Sync configuration is still being served.
- Verify that a discount or trial was not applied by a different plan.
- Test as a new visitor; live-plan price edits affect new subscribers, not necessarily existing subscribers.
Checkout or payouts cannot be enabled
- Verify that the publication country supports payment features rather than engagement only.
- Complete identity or organization verification and check for requests in Payments Center.
- Confirm that bank details are present and that the user has Payments Center permission to manage them.
- Check that the organization type and payment profile details are consistent.
WordPress pages break after installation
- Remove duplicate snippets from the theme and WPCode or Site Kit.
- Temporarily disable script-minification or deferred-loading rules that alter the RRM code.
- Roll back the last theme change, then reinstall the documented snippet in one location.
- Do not enable RRM across an entirely AMP-based site.
Operational checklist before launch
- Publication exists in Publisher Center and the correct site is selected.
- Country and feature availability have been checked recently.
- Logo meets the recommended 1000 × 1000 pixel format or at least the 512 × 512 minimum.
- For-profit or nonprofit status is declared correctly.
- Payments profile is created or connected, verified, and supplied with bank details.
- Finance administrators have explicit Payments Center permissions.
- Price, currency, recurrence, trial, discount, and subscriber benefit are documented.
- Plan is Live and its Product ID is recorded.
- Correct open-access or product-ID snippet is installed on the intended templates.
- Desktop, mobile, logged-out, and returning-reader tests have passed.
- Support staff know where to direct payment, cancellation, and donation questions.
Frequently asked questions
Can RRM replace my website CMS?
No. It adds reader prompts and payment or engagement functionality to pages created by your existing CMS.
Can a nonprofit process donations through RRM?
No. Google distinguishes voluntary donations from contributions. Use a custom non-monetization CTA to send donors to the nonprofit’s existing donation platform.
Can one payments profile serve several publications?
Yes, Google says one profile can cover multiple publications in the same organization, provided the account has the necessary Payments Center access.
What happens if I change a live plan price?
Google says live-plan pricing changes apply to new subscribers. The documentation does not describe current-subscriber repricing as an available function.
