For an ordinary Android phone, Google Play is the practical choice. Amazon ended support for the Amazon Appstore on Android mobile devices on August 20, 2025. The Amazon Appstore remains available on Fire tablets and Fire TV, so the meaningful comparison in 2026 is device-specific rather than a head-to-head choice for every Android user.
The short answer by device
Google Play and the Amazon Appstore are no longer equivalent options for general Android phones. Amazon’s own announcement set August 20, 2025, as the end of Amazon Appstore support for Android mobile devices. Amazon says the store continues to be available and supported on Fire tablets and Fire TV. Apps installed from the Amazon Appstore on Android phones were not guaranteed to keep operating after that date. Read the full timeline in Amazon’s announcement.

| Device context | Google Play | Amazon Appstore | Best practical choice |
|---|---|---|---|
| Most Android phones | Primary Android app marketplace, subject to device compatibility and certification | Android mobile support ended August 20, 2025 | Google Play |
| Fire tablet | Availability depends on the specific device and its software configuration | Supported within the Fire ecosystem | Check the app on the Fire tablet first |
| Fire TV | Availability depends on the TV device and app requirements | Supported within the Fire ecosystem | Check the app’s Fire TV availability |
| Uncertified Android device | Some apps, updates, backups, or security features may be limited | Not a current general-purpose Android-phone alternative | Use the store supported by the device maker and verify compatibility |
That answer does not mean every app in Google Play runs everywhere, or that every app in the Fire store works on every Fire product. Compatibility is determined by the device model, operating-system version, app manifest, required services, and features used by the app.

Amazon’s February 20, 2025 announcement ended the old assumption that its Appstore was a continuing alternative marketplace for Android phones. On August 20, 2025, Amazon stopped supporting the Appstore on Android mobile devices. Existing installations were not guaranteed to continue working, and new compatibility or update problems can arise because the mobile distribution channel is no longer supported.

The same announcement kept the Appstore active for Fire tablets and Fire TV. Those products use Amazon’s Fire OS environment, so the store’s current role is tied to Amazon hardware rather than to Android phones generally. Amazon also ended the Amazon Coins program on August 20, 2025; Coins should not be treated as a current purchasing advantage.
If you still have an Android phone with the Amazon Appstore installed, do not rely on it for long-term access to apps, updates, purchases, or reinstalls. Move important apps to a supported distribution channel, export any data the app provides, and confirm that your account and subscriptions are available through the developer’s current Android distribution.
How Google Play and Fire OS compatibility work
Fire OS is an Android fork, not a universal Android target
Amazon describes Fire OS as a fork of Android. Its documentation covers multiple Fire OS generations based on different Android levels, which means “Android app” is not a sufficient compatibility guarantee. A Fire tablet or Fire TV may differ from an Android phone in available system services, hardware APIs, screen layout, input method, digital-rights components, and account integrations. Amazon’s Fire OS overview explains the platform background.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesAn app can therefore be compatible with one Fire model and unavailable on another. The developer’s manifest may exclude a model, require a newer Android API level than the device supplies, or depend on Google services that are not part of the Fire environment. TV apps also need a ten-foot interface and remote-control navigation, so a phone or tablet listing is not proof of Fire TV support.
Google Play also filters by device
Google Play determines install eligibility from declarations in the app and the capabilities of the device. Screen size, processor architecture, API level, sensors, location, feature requirements, and other manifest rules can affect whether an app appears. Google’s device-compatibility documentation also distinguishes certified from uncertified devices.

- BATTERY LIFE: Long-lasting 5000mAh battery with TurboPower charging technology delivers hours of power in minutes.
On an uncertified device, Google warns that security, system updates, app functionality, and backup can be limited. A phone that can technically install an APK is not necessarily a phone that Google Play considers fully supported. This is why a store listing can be visible on one Android device and hidden on another without either store being broken.
What to check before installing
- Identify the exact device. Record the model, Android or Fire OS version, and whether it is a phone, tablet, or TV.
- Check certification and system updates. On a Google-powered device, an uncertified status can affect app behavior even when installation succeeds.
- Read the app’s compatibility information. Confirm that the listing names your device class and operating-system level, not merely “Android.”
- Review required services. Sign-in, maps, payments, notifications, media playback, and cloud backup may rely on platform services that differ between Google Android and Fire OS.
- Test the functions you actually need. Open the app, sign in, receive a notification, download content, and complete a key task before depending on it.
Security: documented safeguards, not a blanket winner
Google Play’s documented protections
Google documents several layers of protection in its Protected with Play materials:
- Play Protect checks apps during installation and scans devices periodically for potentially harmful software.
- Play Integrity lets developers assess whether requests come from an app and environment that meet configured integrity requirements.
- Play App Signing manages app-signing keys for participating developers and helps deliver signed updates.
- Integrity-based availability checks can influence whether a listing appears on devices meeting the developer’s requirements.
Google says listing checks do not prevent distribution through other channels or sideloading. Play Protect is a security layer, not a guarantee that every app is safe, bug-free, privacy-preserving, or free of abusive behavior. Review the developer, permissions, privacy disclosures, update history, and requested access before installing.
What the evidence does not establish about Amazon
The current material documenting Amazon’s store change does not provide a like-for-like, independent security test comparing the Fire Appstore with Google Play. It would be inaccurate to declare one store categorically safer on that basis. Fire-device owners should use the protections supplied by their device and operating system, keep software updated, install from the supported store, and avoid modified packages from unknown sources.
The practical security distinction for phone owners is support status: Google Play remains an actively supported mobile distribution channel, while Amazon ended Android-mobile support. For Fire owners, the relevant question is whether the specific Fire device and app are still supported, not whether one store has won a universal security ranking.

App selection and distribution
Google says Android developers can distribute apps through Google Play, other Android stores, their own websites, or preloads. That means an app’s absence from Google Play does not prove it is unavailable everywhere, and an APK obtained elsewhere does not inherit all of Google Play’s update and verification behavior.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Amazon’s current Appstore role is concentrated on Fire tablets and Fire TV. An app may be published for Fire devices with a different package configuration, feature set, or update schedule from its Google Play edition. Developers can target device families separately, so compare the exact listing and version rather than assuming that two apps with the same name are interchangeable.
There is no current, sourced basis here for claiming that either store has more apps, higher ratings, lower prices, or a superior catalog overall. Catalog size changes continuously, and meaningful comparisons would need the same country, date, device class, and counting method.
Payments, billing, and regional rules
Google Play billing is policy- and product-specific
Google’s payments policy applies to digital goods and services in apps distributed through Google Play, subject to the policy’s categories and exceptions. Physical goods and physical services are treated differently. A subscription to digital content, an in-game item, and a ride or delivered product should not be assumed to follow identical billing rules.
Google permits developers to distribute through other stores or directly from a website, but changing distribution does not automatically make every payment flow permissible. Developers must follow the rules that apply to the user’s country, the app’s category, and the distribution channel.

Do not generalize the U.S. policy changes
Google’s U.S.-specific policy update describes changes and programs involving external links, alternative billing, and third-party-store catalog access on 2025 and 2026 timelines. Those provisions are tied to U.S. rules and effective dates. They should not be presented as worldwide policy. If you are a developer or business, verify the live terms for the country where the transaction occurs before changing checkout, links, or fees.
Amazon Coins are no longer a reason to choose the store
Amazon ended the Coins program on August 20, 2025, alongside the Android-mobile Appstore change. Any comparison that presents Coins as an active discount or payment benefit is outdated. Fire-device purchase terms still depend on the current app listing, account, country, and Amazon’s live policies.

Google’s official service-fee page reports that 97% of developers distribute their app and use Google developer tools and services at no cost. It also says that 99% of developers who are subject to a service fee qualify for a fee of 15% or less. These are Google’s own figures; the page does not state a publication year, and they are not an independent Google-versus-Amazon comparison. See the Google Play service-fee explanation for the qualifications.
The same page says Google Play Protect scans over 100 billion apps per day. That is a Google-reported operational figure, not a third-party measurement and not a direct measure of how many malicious apps reach users.

A decision framework for users
If you own a regular Android phone
- Use Google Play as the default source for apps that support your phone.
- Check that the phone is certified and receives system and security updates.
- For an app that is missing, visit the developer’s official website to learn whether it supports another distribution channel; do not assume an unofficial APK is equivalent.
- Before moving data, verify that the alternative build supports your sign-in, purchases, notifications, and backups.
- Remove dependence on the Amazon Appstore for critical apps because Android-mobile support ended on August 20, 2025.
If you own a Fire tablet
- Start with the Amazon Appstore listing for your exact Fire tablet generation.
- Check the app’s required Fire OS level and whether the developer explicitly supports your model.
- Test features that commonly depend on platform services, including sign-in, push notifications, location, media playback, and in-app purchases.
- Keep Fire OS and the app updated through supported channels.
- If the app is unavailable, ask the developer whether a Fire-compatible build exists rather than assuming that a phone APK will work.
If you own a Fire TV
- Look for a listing that specifically supports Fire TV, not only Android phones or tablets.
- Confirm that the interface works with remote navigation and the TV’s screen resolution.
- Test playback, account linking, and any subscription entitlement on the TV itself.
- Use the supported Fire TV update path so the app receives compatible releases.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
“Both stores are Android stores, so every app is interchangeable”
They target different device environments. Fire OS is an Android fork, and Google Play also filters by hardware, software, and certification. Compare the exact device and app listing.
“If an APK installs, the app is supported”
Installation proves only that the package passed an installation check. The app may fail at sign-in, notifications, payments, media playback, updates, or backup because a required service is absent or incompatible.
“Play Protect makes every Play app safe”
Play Protect scans and warns, but it cannot guarantee an app’s quality, privacy practices, or future behavior. Treat it as one layer of defense.
“U.S. billing changes apply everywhere”
The 2025–2026 Google policy update cited above is explicitly U.S.-focused. Country, app category, distribution channel, and effective date matter.
“Amazon Coins make the Amazon store cheaper”
The Coins program ended on August 20, 2025. Do not include it in a current cost comparison.
Bottom line
Choose Google Play for an ordinary Android phone because Amazon no longer supports its Appstore on Android mobile devices. Choose the Amazon Appstore when you are using a supported Fire tablet or Fire TV and the exact app is compatible with that device. In every case, verify the model, operating-system version, certification, required services, country-specific payment rules, and the developer’s current support statement before treating an app as dependable.
