Use Android’s storage tools when the space problem is photos, videos, downloads, music, or other files. Clear cache only for temporary files; clear storage when you accept permanent deletion of an app’s local data; uninstall when you no longer want the app installed.
Archiving removes an app’s installed software, permissions, temporary files, and notifications while leaving its icon and app data on the device. Tapping the faded icon downloads the software again. Android’s Storage screen works on a broader set of items, including media and downloads, so archiving is not a replacement for file cleanup.

| Action | What is removed | What happens to app data | How you reverse it | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Archive app | Installed app software, permissions, temporary files, and notifications | The icon and the app’s data remain on the device | Tap the faded icon, or choose to unarchive from App info or the app’s Play Store details page; the software downloads again | Free app-installation space without discarding the app’s local data |
| Clear cache | Temporary files created by the app | App data is not the target; the app may be slower the next time it opens while files are rebuilt | No restoration is needed | Remove an unusually large temporary cache |
| Clear storage | All data stored by that app on the device | Permanently deleted according to Google’s Android Help; treat it as destructive | Usually no undo; sign in or restore data only if the app provides its own recovery | Reset an app when its local data can be lost or recovered |
| Uninstall | The installed app | The cited Google guidance does not promise that local app data is retained | Reinstall a purchased app without buying it again, provided it remains available in the store | Remove an app you do not want installed |
| Clean files or media | Selected photos, videos, downloads, music, or other files; some actions move items to a bin | Depends on the source app, backup status, and the action selected | Restore from the relevant bin or backup when available | Address file categories rather than app-installation space |
Google’s help pages do not provide a universal number of megabytes saved by any of these actions. The amount depends on the app, its downloaded content, your device, and what you select.

How app archiving works
The middle ground between keeping and uninstalling
An archived app is no longer fully installed. Android removes the executable software and related permissions, temporary files, and notifications, but retains the launcher icon and the app’s data. The icon is usually faded so you can distinguish it from an active installation. This makes archiving useful for an app you use only occasionally but do not want to configure from scratch again.
Retained data means the app’s on-device data, not a guarantee about every account, cloud record, downloaded item, or synchronization state. Different apps store different information locally. If an app keeps important work in a format that is not synced or exported, make a separate backup before relying on archiving.
Restoring an archived app
Tap the faded icon to reinstall the software, or open the app’s App info page and choose the unarchive option. You can also open the app’s details page in the Play Store and restore it there. Restoration requires the relevant app store to be installed, the app to remain available in that store, and enough free space for the download and installation. If the developer has removed the app, restricted it in your region, or your device is incompatible, the icon cannot guarantee a successful reinstall.
Version and hardware limits
Google’s Android Help says some manual-archiving steps work only on Android 15 or later and that some functions require compatible device hardware. Menu names and placement also vary by phone maker. If you do not see Archive in an app’s settings, check for a system update and the manufacturer’s instructions; do not assume that clearing storage has the same effect.
Manually archive an app
On a supported device, use the system path below. The exact wording can differ slightly by manufacturer.

- EASY CONTENT MANAGEMENT. Easily back up, organize, and transfer your photos and videos with the SANDISK Memory Zone desktop or Android mobile app[5].
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps (sometimes shown as Apps & notifications or App management).
- Select the app you want to pause.
- Tap Archive, then confirm.
After confirmation, the app’s software is removed and its icon remains in the launcher. Open the icon later to download the app again. If the archive control is missing, the phone, Android release, hardware, app, or manufacturer software may not support manual archiving.
Turn automatic archiving on or off
Enable automatic archiving
- Open the Play Store.
- Tap your profile photo.
- Choose Settings.
- Open General.
- Turn on Automatically archive apps.
With this setting enabled, apps that are not used often can have their software removed while personal data and the icon are saved. Android may also offer automatic archiving when there is not enough installation space. The system decides which eligible apps to archive; it is not a command to remove a particular file category.
Block automatic archiving for one app
When automatic archiving is enabled, open Settings > Apps > [the app] and turn off Manage app if unused. That prevents automatic archiving for that app while leaving manual archiving available. The label may vary by device.
Clear cache without erasing app data
Cache is temporary data: image previews, streamed fragments, working files, and similar material that an app can recreate. Clearing it can help when a cache has grown unusually large or an app is misbehaving. Google cautions that some apps may be slower the next time they open because they must rebuild those files.
- Open Settings and go to Apps.
- Select the app.
- Tap Storage or Storage & cache.
- Choose Clear cache, not Clear storage or Clear data.
Cache clearing is not a way to remove every byte associated with an app, and it does not archive or uninstall the app. If the cache immediately returns, the app is simply recreating temporary files during normal use.

Clear app storage only when a reset is acceptable
Clear storage permanently deletes all app data on the device, according to Android Help. That can include sign-in state, preferences, offline downloads, drafts, databases, and files that have not synchronized elsewhere. Google advises trying to delete data from inside the app first, because the app may offer a safer export or account-sync option.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsUse the same Settings > Apps > [app] > Storage screen, but select Clear storage or Clear data only after checking what will be lost. Clearing storage is appropriate for a deliberate reset, not routine housekeeping. It does not preserve the app’s local data the way archiving does.
Uninstall when the app should be gone
Uninstalling removes the installed app rather than placing it in a reversible, data-preserving middle state. A paid app can normally be downloaded again from the same account without purchasing it again, but the cited Google guidance does not promise retention of local app data after uninstalling. Export anything important and verify synchronization before choosing Uninstall.
If you may need the app and its local state later, archive it instead when your device supports that feature. If you never want it installed and have no data to preserve, uninstalling is the clearer choice.
Use Android’s Storage screen for photos, downloads, and media
Storage is not memory
Android distinguishes storage, where files such as photos and music are kept, from memory (RAM), where Android and running programs operate. Removing a download can free storage without changing how much memory an app uses. Closing apps or clearing RAM therefore does not solve a nearly full storage drive.

Inspect categories before deleting
- Open Settings.
- Tap Storage.
- Choose a category to see what is consuming space.
Category names and paths vary by phone. Review the largest categories first: photos and videos, downloaded files, music, games, and app installation data. This view helps you avoid archiving several small apps when one video folder is the real cause of the warning.
Free space from Android’s suggestions
Google’s storage guidance describes a Free up space area where you can select recent photos, videos, or apps. Review each selection rather than accepting every suggestion. Confirm that an item is duplicated, backed up, or no longer needed before deleting it. Some file-management actions move items to a bin, while others remove them immediately; the confirmation screen should tell you which applies.
Remove downloaded media in its source app
Offline music, video, podcasts, maps, and documents are often managed most safely inside the app that downloaded them. Open that app and remove completed or unwanted downloads there. Deleting a database file from a generic file browser can leave the app confused, whereas its own download manager can update its index correctly.
Copy files to a computer before deleting local copies
Android’s guidance also supports copying files to a computer over USB, verifying the copy, and then deleting the local versions. Keep the phone unlocked if required, choose the file-transfer mode in the USB notification, and check the destination before removing anything from the phone. A copy that was never opened or compared is not a reliable backup.

Smart storage can automatically clear backed-up photos and videos when the device is nearly full. Enable it from the phone’s storage settings if the option is present. Before relying on it, verify that the photos and videos have completed backup and are visible from the backup service on another device or in its web interface. Smart Storage removes local copies; it is not a substitute for confirming that the originals are safely backed up.

Unused-app optimization is related but not the same as archiving
Android can optimize apps that have not been used for a long time. The documented effects may include deleting temporary files, revoking permissions, stopping background activity, and stopping notifications. This is a broader inactivity policy and should not be described as identical to Play Store app archiving.
Review these apps under Settings > Apps > Unused apps. For an app that must keep running or retain permissions, turn off Pause app activity if unused. That setting controls inactivity behavior; it does not provide the same explicit archive-and-restore path.

Choosing the right action for common situations
- You might use the app again and want its local state: archive it, if supported.
- An app’s temporary footprint is unusually large: clear its cache and expect a slower first launch while it rebuilds files.
- The app is broken and you are willing to start over: back up or export what matters, then clear storage.
- You no longer want the app installed: uninstall it after checking local data and offline files.
- Photos or videos fill the phone: review Storage, confirm backups, move files to a computer, or remove selected local copies.
- Downloads fill the phone: delete them in the downloading app or from the Downloads category after checking their contents.
- The phone warns that installation space is low: archive eligible infrequently used apps, then inspect large files if more room is needed.
Limits and troubleshooting
The Archive button is missing
Check the Android version, install available system updates, and confirm that the phone supports the feature. Google says some archiving steps require Android 15 or later and compatible hardware. Manufacturer menus can also differ. If the control still does not appear, use the Storage screen, cache controls, or ordinary uninstall path rather than assuming another button is an archive command.
The archived icon will not restore
Confirm that the app store is installed, you are signed in to the account that installed the app, and the app still appears in the store for your device and region. Free installation space may be required for the download. An app that has been removed from the store cannot be restored merely by tapping its old icon.
Archiving did not free enough space
Archiving removes app software, but it does not target photos, videos, downloads, or every file an app may have stored outside its installation package. Return to Settings > Storage, identify the largest category, and clean that category directly. There is no official universal savings figure because app sizes and stored content differ.
Important information disappeared after cleanup
Stop deleting files, check the relevant bin or trash area, and look for a verified cloud or computer copy. Clearing storage is permanent at the app-data level, and Smart Storage can remove local media after backup. If no backup or bin copy exists, recovery is not guaranteed.

Google notes that settings vary by phone. Search Settings for Storage, Archive, or Unused apps, and consult the phone manufacturer’s documentation for its exact labels. Do not select a similarly named destructive option without reading its confirmation text.
Quick Recap
A safe space-freeing workflow
- Open Settings > Storage and identify the category using the most space.
- If apps are the main category, archive infrequently used apps that you may want later.
- For one app with a large temporary footprint, clear only its cache.
- For photos and videos, verify backup status before deleting local copies or enabling Smart Storage.
- For downloads and offline media, remove items through the app that downloaded them when possible.
- Copy irreplaceable files to a computer and verify the copy before deleting the phone’s originals.
- Use clear storage or uninstall only after confirming that the app’s local data can be lost.
- Reopen Storage to confirm that the intended category changed, then leave enough free space for Android and future updates.
