Choose the Pixel Watch 4 first if you want Google’s watch and Google Health/Fitbit ecosystem, or if your phone runs Android 11 but cannot meet Samsung’s newer requirement. Choose the Galaxy Watch8 first if you use a Samsung Galaxy phone and want Samsung Health Monitor functions such as ECG or blood-pressure checks that Samsung gates to supported Galaxy phones. If both watches work with your phone, size, charging habits, health-feature availability, LTE needs and current local pricing decide the purchase.
This is a specification and support-document comparison, not a controlled hands-on test. Manufacturer battery figures are not directly comparable, and official feature availability varies by country, phone model and software version.

Start with your phone, not the watch
Compatibility determines which features you can actually use. Google says Pixel Watch 4 works with most phones running Android 11.0 or newer, and setup requires a Google Account and the Pixel Watch app. Samsung lists Android 12 or newer and at least 1.5 GB of RAM for Galaxy Watch8. Both current product lines exclude iPhone support.

Basic Watch8 pairing with a non-Samsung Android phone can be possible when the phone meets Samsung’s requirements. That does not mean every Samsung health function will appear: Samsung Health Monitor has a separate Galaxy-phone requirement in the United States.
Pixel Watch 4 and Galaxy Watch8 specifications
The two watches are contemporary Wear OS products, but their published specifications are not identical. The Pixel Watch 4 page provides more complete hardware figures; Samsung’s cited materials emphasize display, operating-system and compatibility information. A missing value below means the cited official material does not establish a single comparable number, not that the hardware lacks the feature.

Case size and wrist fit
Pixel Watch 4 comes in 41 mm and 45 mm cases. Galaxy Watch8 standard models come in 40 mm and 44 mm. The closest nominal comparisons are therefore Pixel 41 mm versus Galaxy 40 mm, and Pixel 45 mm versus Galaxy 44 mm.
A larger case can provide more screen area and room for a larger battery, while a smaller case may suit a narrow wrist or make sleeping with the watch easier. Those are practical trade-offs, not proof that one model is universally more comfortable. Lug shape, strap adjustment, wrist circumference and personal tolerance matter more than a one-millimeter difference. Try the actual case size, or measure a watch that already fits you, before ordering.
Display visibility
Google rates both Pixel Watch 4 sizes at up to 3,000 nits peak brightness. Samsung describes the same 3,000-nit peak figure for Watch8 in its global launch material. These are separate vendor specifications, not a laboratory side-by-side measurement, so they should not be treated as evidence that one screen is brighter in daily use.

Battery life and charging: read the test conditions
Google gives explicit estimates for both Pixel Watch 4 sizes:
Recommended Free Tools
- The 41 mm model is rated for up to 30 hours with the always-on display enabled, or up to 48 hours in Battery Saver mode.
- The 45 mm model is rated for up to 40 hours with the always-on display enabled, or up to 72 hours in Battery Saver mode.
Those numbers come from Google’s current specification page and are manufacturer estimates, not independent measurements. Battery Saver changes the operating conditions, so its figure is not equivalent to normal always-on use.
Samsung publishes Watch8 battery capacities and runtime estimates with its own methodology. The launch release says testing used prerelease devices, a Samsung phone and specified charging equipment. Because Samsung’s conditions differ from Google’s, the available documentation cannot establish a controlled battery winner. Reviewers would need matched case sizes, display settings, GPS use, LTE activity, notifications and software versions to make that comparison.
In practice, plan around the routine you need rather than a headline number. Always-on display, frequent GPS workouts, LTE calls or streaming, sleep tracking, screen brightness, weak cellular signal and background apps all affect how often a watch needs a charger. The larger Pixel 45 mm has Google’s longer stated normal-use estimate, but that is not a promise that it will outlast every Watch8 configuration.
Health and fitness features are ecosystem decisions
Both watches collect health and activity information, but the services behind those measurements differ. The Pixel Watch 4 uses Google’s health experience with Fitbit-related tracking. Galaxy Watch8 uses Samsung Health and Samsung Health Monitor. Choose the ecosystem that matches the phone, account and services you already use.

Pixel Watch 4 ECG and Google health availability
Google’s ECG documentation says the ECG app can identify signs consistent with atrial fibrillation, but it does not diagnose AFib or replace medical care. Availability is limited to countries on Google’s current list at Google’s ECG country-availability page. The detailed help page is at Google Pixel Watch ECG support.

- Detects loss of pulse, then calls for help: Pixel Watch 5 is the only smartwatch to feature Loss of Pulse Detection, which can prompt a call to emergency services[10]
Google also notes that health features differ by location and that some require a paid Premium subscription. Check the current feature and subscription terms at Google’s activity and sleep support page before buying for a specific measurement.
Galaxy Watch8 ECG, blood pressure and sleep apnea
Samsung Health Monitor can record ECG, check blood pressure and support sleep-apnea monitoring, but Samsung does not make those functions universal. Its US support documentation requires a compatible Samsung Galaxy phone running Android 12 or later for the relevant Health Monitor features. Samsung also restricts features to places where the app has been released and lists additional user and device prerequisites. Review the current requirements at Samsung Health Monitor support.
This phone gating is the key distinction for Samsung buyers. A non-Samsung Android phone may pair with the watch for ordinary smartwatch functions while still lacking ECG or blood-pressure tools. Confirm your exact phone model and country before paying extra for a health feature you cannot activate.
Software, apps and accounts
Both watches use Wear OS 6 according to the cited product materials, so the broad smartwatch platform is familiar: notifications, apps, watch faces and phone-linked controls. The surrounding services are different.
- Pixel Watch 4: best aligned with a Google Account, Google’s watch software and Google Health/Fitbit data. Google’s support and specification pages should be your reference for supported phones and regional health functions.
- Galaxy Watch8: best aligned with Samsung Galaxy phones, Samsung Health and Samsung Health Monitor. A Samsung phone is particularly important when ECG, blood pressure or sleep-apnea functions are part of the purchase decision.
Do not assume that an app available on one Wear OS watch will expose identical controls on the other. Phone manufacturer, regional app release, account type and permissions can change what appears during setup.
Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and LTE: decide how independent the watch must be
Both product families offer Bluetooth models and LTE variants. Bluetooth/Wi-Fi models rely more heavily on the phone for calls, messages, streaming and connected data. LTE can let the watch stay useful when the phone is left behind, but activation depends on a compatible carrier and may add a recurring charge.

Pixel Watch 4’s listed connectivity includes Bluetooth 6.0, Wi-Fi, NFC, UWB and dual-frequency GPS, with optional LTE. Galaxy Watch8 materials identify Bluetooth and LTE versions; exact radio combinations depend on the regional model. Check the model number before ordering because an LTE case and a Bluetooth-only case are not interchangeable purchases.
Which watch fits each type of buyer?
Choose Pixel Watch 4 first if you use a non-Samsung Android phone
Pixel Watch 4 is the simpler starting point when your phone meets Android 11 but not Android 12, or when you want Google’s health and watch experience rather than Samsung’s. It also gives you a clear choice between 41 mm and 45 mm cases and publishes detailed storage, memory, GPS and battery specifications. Verify that any ECG or Premium feature you need is available in your country.
Choose Galaxy Watch8 first if you already own a Samsung Galaxy phone
Galaxy Watch8 deserves priority when Samsung Health is central to your routine, especially if you want Health Monitor functions. The Samsung phone requirement for ECG and blood pressure in the US documentation means a Galaxy owner is better positioned to access the advertised health tools. Confirm the phone’s Android version, RAM and local feature release before purchase.
Compare both directly when compatibility is already settled
If your phone meets both requirements and you do not need a phone-gated health function, compare the similar case sizes, charging routine, LTE cost, preferred apps and current local prices. Specifications alone do not establish better real-world performance, comfort, GPS accuracy, heart-rate accuracy or notification reliability.
Choose neither if you need iPhone support
Current Google and Samsung support pages identify iPhone as unsupported for these watch lines. An iPhone owner should not buy either model expecting normal pairing or setup.

- Identify the exact phone. Open the phone’s Settings app, check its Android version and model, and compare it with Google’s Android 11 requirement or Samsung’s Android 12 and 1.5 GB RAM requirement.
- Separate pairing from health access. If you want ECG, blood pressure or sleep-apnea monitoring, check the relevant Google or Samsung support page for your country. A watch that pairs successfully may still lack a particular health app.
- Select the case size. Compare Pixel 41 mm with Watch8 40 mm, or Pixel 45 mm with Watch8 44 mm. Consider wrist circumference, sleep wear, screen readability and the weight of an LTE version.
- Choose Bluetooth/Wi-Fi or LTE. Select LTE only if you will use the watch away from your phone and your carrier supports the model. Verify activation charges and whether your phone plan allows smartwatch service.
- Check the current local listing. Prices, promotions, stock and regional model numbers change. Confirm the case size, connectivity, seller, warranty region and included charger before payment rather than relying on an old launch price.
- Plan the account setup. Pixel Watch 4 requires a Google Account and Pixel Watch app. Galaxy Watch8 setup may require Samsung apps and a Samsung account for certain services. Have passwords, permissions and two-factor authentication available.
Common pitfalls and how to avoid them
Buying for a health feature that is unavailable locally
ECG approval and Health Monitor releases are country-specific. A product page may list a sensor while the companion app remains unavailable in your market. Check the current regional support page before treating a feature as a buying requirement.

Assuming every Android phone gets the same Galaxy features
Samsung’s general compatibility requirement and Samsung Health Monitor’s Samsung-phone requirement are separate tests. Confirm both when shopping with a non-Samsung phone.
Comparing Battery Saver with normal operation
Google’s 48-hour and 72-hour figures use Battery Saver, while its 30-hour and 40-hour figures include always-on display. Keep those modes separate, and do not compare them with Samsung’s differently measured estimates as if they were a laboratory contest.
Choosing a case without checking the strap ecosystem
Case size affects the watch body and its band fit. Buy a band identified for the exact model and size; do not assume a Pixel band will fit a Galaxy Watch8 or that two similarly sized cases use the same connector.

Peak brightness, battery capacity and sensor lists do not establish how a watch feels during sleep, how accurately it records a workout or how reliably it delivers notifications. Those questions require independent testing, which is outside this specification comparison.
What the published information can—and cannot—tell you
The official pages establish compatibility, case sizes, operating systems, connectivity options, display claims and health-feature conditions. They do not provide a controlled Pixel-versus-Galaxy test of battery endurance, GPS tracking, heart-rate accuracy, long-term reliability, notification latency or comfort. Treat the Pixel and Samsung runtime figures as estimates made under different conditions, and verify any price or stock information in your own market.
Verdict
For most buyers, the phone decides the shortlist. Pixel Watch 4 is the more natural first investigation for Google-focused users and phones that meet Android 11 but not Samsung’s Android 12 requirement. Galaxy Watch8 is the more natural first investigation for Samsung Galaxy owners who want Samsung Health Monitor functions. When both are compatible, select the case size and ecosystem you prefer, verify regional health access, choose LTE only if you will use it, and ignore any claim that a manufacturer battery estimate proves a universal winner.
