Short answer: Current Pixel and Galaxy flagships can both offer long support, but neither brand can be declared universally faster from the manufacturers’ published policies alone. Google describes phased Pixel delivery that can take a few weeks, while Samsung assigns Galaxy models to monthly, quarterly, or biannual security schedules and says timing varies by market, provider, and model.
The useful comparison is therefore model by model: identify the exact phone, find when its support clock began, separate operating-system upgrades from security patches, and account for carrier or regional delays.

What the comparison actually measures
“Security support” combines several promises that are easy to conflate:
- Security updates: patches intended to address security issues in the phone’s software.
- Operating-system upgrades: major Android-version changes, which may also bring platform and interface changes.
- Feature drops or interface features: additional functions that may arrive separately from a security patch or major OS release.
- Delivery speed: the time between a vendor releasing an update and that update becoming installable on a particular phone in a particular market.
A long support period does not guarantee same-day delivery. Conversely, a phone that receives patches promptly today may have fewer years remaining than a newer model with a longer commitment. The comparison should answer two separate questions: how long will this exact device remain covered, and how predictable is its path to each update?

Those questions also have different evidence. A support commitment is a policy statement tied to a model and a starting date. Speed is an observed interval that must be measured for a particular firmware release, region, carrier and device variant. Treating one as proof of the other produces misleading conclusions.
Support periods by model family
| Phone or series | Published commitment | When the clock starts or what to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Google Pixel 8 and later | Seven years of operating-system and security updates; the period may also include Pixel Drop features. | Counted from when that model first became available in the US Google Store, not from a later purchase date. |
| Google Pixel 6, Pixel 7 and listed Pixel Fold generations | Five-year support period listed on Google’s Pixel software-update support page. | Use the original US Google Store availability date for the specific model to estimate the remaining window. |
| Samsung Galaxy S24 series | Seven generations of OS upgrades and seven years of security updates. | Commitment applies to the named S24 series; confirm the exact model and regional version. |
| Samsung Galaxy S25 series | Seven generations of OS upgrades and seven years of security updates. | Commitment applies to the named S25 series; do not extend it automatically to every Galaxy device. |
| Other Galaxy A, Z and older or lower-tier models | Not stated by the commitments above. | Check Samsung’s support information for the exact model, market and carrier. |
Google’s current Pixel support information was checked October 13, 2026. Samsung’s S24 and S25 commitments were announced with their respective series availability material in January 2024 and January 2025. Those dates identify the published policy, not the date every unit receives an update.
Why the model name is not enough
A family label can conceal meaningful differences in support treatment. “Galaxy” covers flagship, foldable, mid-range and entry-level lines, while “Pixel” spans generations with different published periods. Even within a named family, the region and sales channel can affect when firmware is offered. Record the complete model designation and whether it is an unlocked or carrier edition before comparing promises.
Do not infer that a newer policy applies retroactively. The seven-year Pixel language applies to Pixel 8 and later models identified by Google; the five-year listing remains relevant to Pixel 6, Pixel 7 and the listed Pixel Fold generations. Samsung’s seven-year language is explicitly attached to the S24 and S25 series announcements, not to every Galaxy phone sold before or alongside them.
How long do Pixel phones get security updates?
Pixel 8 and newer
Google’s current policy gives Pixel 8 and later phones a seven-year period covering both OS and security updates. The starting point is the model’s first availability in the US Google Store. A Pixel 10, for example, falls into the Pixel 8-and-later group, but its remaining support should be calculated from the Pixel 10’s original US availability date rather than from the day you buy it.
The commitment is attached to the model, not to an individual owner. Buying a phone several years after launch does not reset the clock. For a used device, subtract the elapsed time since first US Google Store availability from the published period, then allow for the possibility that a carrier variant may receive releases later than an unlocked retail model.
“Seven years” includes both categories named by Google: operating-system updates and security updates. It may also include Pixel Drop features, but a feature drop is not a replacement for a security patch and should not be counted as extra time beyond the stated period. A buyer interested specifically in vulnerability coverage should verify the security-update end point separately from the arrival of optional features.
Pixel 6, Pixel 7 and Pixel Fold generations listed for five years
Google’s support page lists Pixel 6, Pixel 7 and Pixel Fold generations with a five-year period. These devices can still be sensible purchases when priced appropriately, but the relevant question is how much of that period remains. A launch-era statement such as “five years of updates” is not the same as five years from today.
For an older Pixel, calculate from the original US Google Store availability date, then compare the result with the phone’s current patch level. If the device has already consumed much of its five-year window, the remaining coverage may be substantially shorter than the headline number suggests. This is especially important when comparing a discounted older phone with a newer model whose clock has only recently started.
How Pixel delivery works
Google says Pixel updates roll out gradually and depend on the carrier and device. It warns that an update may take a few weeks to arrive. “Released” therefore does not mean that every Pixel can install it immediately. A staged rollout can make two otherwise identical phones show different availability on the same day.

That delay is a delivery characteristic, not a reduction in the promised support period. The model can remain covered for the stated years even when a particular patch is not yet visible on one device. When documenting a delay, note the patch month, exact model, carrier and country instead of assuming the entire Pixel line is late.

Galaxy S24 and S25 series
Samsung’s official announcements for the S24 and S25 series promise seven generations of OS upgrades and seven years of security updates. These are series-specific commitments. They should not be treated as a blanket guarantee for every Galaxy A, Z or other model.
“Seven generations” describes the number of major operating-system upgrades, while “seven years” describes the security-update period. They are related but not interchangeable measurements. A phone can use its allotted OS generations before the security-update period ends, and the exact timing of a major upgrade can differ from the timing of a monthly security release.
When evaluating a Galaxy phone, record the exact model number and sales region. A name such as “Galaxy S25” identifies a family, but storage options, connectivity versions and carrier editions can still affect update availability. Samsung’s published promise establishes the length for the named series; the support page for your market determines how that particular unit is handled.
Samsung’s published security-maintenance schedules
Samsung’s Mobile Security information groups supported devices into monthly, quarterly and biannual security-maintenance schedules. The group is device-specific and can change with market, network provider and model. A quarterly schedule does not mean a patch will arrive on one fixed day every three months; it describes the planned maintenance category.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Biannual placement is not evidence that a phone is permanently unsupported. It means the manufacturer places that model in a less frequent maintenance group than monthly or quarterly devices. Conversely, monthly placement is not a guarantee of same-day delivery in every country. Check the live list for the exact model rather than relying on the Galaxy brand name.
Samsung also cautions that a regular OS upgrade can delay a planned security update. During a major Android or One UI transition, the security patch level shown on a phone may therefore lag the normal maintenance plan temporarily. A delay around an OS upgrade should be recorded as a scheduling caveat, not automatically treated as the end of security support.
Are Pixel updates faster than Samsung updates?
There is no defensible brand-wide winner in the published information. Google documents a phased Pixel rollout and a possible wait of a few weeks. Samsung documents cadence categories and warns about market, provider, model and OS-upgrade variation. Neither statement is a model-matched measurement of release-to-install time.
Anecdotes can be useful for spotting a particular carrier problem, but they cannot rank two brands unless the devices, patch, market and network are matched. A Pixel that receives a patch early on one carrier may not represent every Pixel, just as a Galaxy on a monthly list may appear later on another provider.

- Release event: choose the vendor’s announced patch or the date the firmware becomes available for a reference device.
- Arrival event: record when the update is actually installable on the exact phone, region and carrier being tested.
- Like-for-like models: compare similar tiers, such as an unlocked flagship with an unlocked flagship, rather than a flagship against a budget model.
- Same patch month: use the same security bulletin or update cycle so seasonal delays do not distort the result.
- Separate update types: measure security-patch arrival independently from a major Android or One UI upgrade.
- Repeat across months: one unusually quick or slow rollout cannot establish a permanent brand pattern.
- Record the channel: note whether each phone is a retail unlocked unit or a carrier-branded version.
- Record the displayed patch level: distinguish the date shown in the phone’s software information from the date an announcement was published.
Without that model-, market- and carrier-matched dataset, the accurate conclusion is narrower: Pixel delivery is described as phased, and Galaxy delivery follows a model-dependent schedule that may be monthly, quarterly or biannual.
Do Galaxy phones get monthly security updates?
Some do, but “Galaxy” is not a sufficient answer. Samsung’s support information places supported devices in monthly, quarterly or biannual groups. The exact group depends on the model and can vary by market and provider.
Check the current Samsung Mobile Security device list for the exact model. Treat the listed cadence as a maintenance target, not a promise that every patch arrives on the same calendar date in every country. A carrier-branded unit may receive firmware after an unlocked version, and a major OS upgrade can delay a planned security release.

If monthly security coverage is a deciding factor, verify three things before buying: the exact series and model code, the country or sales region, and the network version. Do not substitute the schedule of an S24 or S25 for that of an unrelated Galaxy model simply because both use Android and One UI.
Does the carrier delay Android updates?
Yes, a carrier can affect when an update becomes available. Google explicitly says Pixel delivery depends on the carrier and device. Samsung likewise says its schedule varies by market and network provider. Testing or comparing phones on different networks can therefore produce a carrier result rather than a brand result.
When investigating a delay, identify:
- the exact model and regional variant;
- whether the phone is carrier-branded or unlocked;
- the current security-patch date shown in Settings;
- the Android or One UI version being installed;
- the country and network provider; and
- whether the vendor has announced a staged rollout or an OS-upgrade transition.
Compare like with like. An unlocked US retail Pixel and a carrier Pixel may not expose the same update on the same day. The same principle applies to Galaxy phones sold through different providers or in different markets. A delay affecting one channel should not be generalized to all versions of the model.
Do not manually install firmware intended for another model or region to bypass a delay. An incompatible package can fail to install or create additional support problems. The safer comparison is to wait for the official package for the exact device, then record when it becomes available.

For a new phone
- Write down the complete model name and, where shown, the model or product code.
- Find the manufacturer’s support page for that exact model and sales region.
- Record the original availability date used by the policy. For Pixel 8 and later, Google specifies first availability in the US Google Store.
- Record separately the promised OS-upgrade period and security-update period.
- Check the current security-maintenance category or rollout notes for the model.
- Confirm whether the unit is unlocked or tied to a network provider.
- Save the date on which you checked, because support lists and rollout status can change as models move between maintenance groups.
For a used phone
- Find the model’s original availability date, not the seller’s purchase date.
- Calculate elapsed time from that date to today.
- Subtract elapsed time from the applicable support period.
- Check the phone’s current patch level and whether the seller’s carrier or region differs from yours.
- Price the device according to the remaining support, not the launch promise.
- Ask whether the phone can receive official updates in your country and on your network.
The basic calculation is straightforward: remaining support = published support period − time since the manufacturer’s stated start date. It is an estimate of the policy window, not a promise that an update will appear on a particular day.
For example, a Pixel 7 bought in 2026 should be evaluated against the five-year period listed for that generation and its original US Google Store availability date. A Pixel 10 or Galaxy S25 should be evaluated against its own launch date and model-specific policy, even though both product lines advertise long support for current flagships.
Security patches versus OS upgrades
A security patch updates the security level without necessarily changing the Android generation. An OS upgrade is a larger software release and can alter system behavior, APIs, interface elements and app compatibility. The two schedules can overlap, but they are not interchangeable.

When a manufacturer says a phone receives a certain number of OS generations and a certain number of years of security updates, read those as two related commitments. A device may reach the end of major-version upgrades while still receiving security patches, or it may receive a security patch later than expected while a major upgrade is being prepared.
Pixel’s published period may also include Pixel Drop features. Those features should not be counted as additional security coverage or assumed to arrive on the same date as a patch. Similarly, a new One UI or Android version on a Galaxy is not proof that the monthly security package arrived on the same schedule.
For a purchase decision, decide which benefit matters most. Long security coverage reduces the risk of owning a phone after its supported period. Frequent OS generations may matter more if you need newer platform behavior or interface features. The manufacturer’s wording should be read separately for each benefit.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choosing between a Pixel and a Galaxy for security support
Choose by remaining years, not headline years
If you keep phones for many years, start with the model’s support end date. A newer phone with a longer commitment usually has more usable support remaining than an older phone whose headline period began years ago. This is why a five-year Pixel policy can still be adequate for one buyer and unattractive for another, depending on when the device entered service.
Choose by your tolerance for rollout variation
Pixel buyers should expect staged delivery and possible waits of a few weeks. Galaxy buyers should inspect the model’s maintenance category and account for regional, provider and OS-upgrade variation. Neither policy guarantees a universal same-day experience.
Choose by the exact sales channel
Unlocked and carrier versions can follow different availability paths. Confirm the model sold in your country before relying on a support promise or comparing arrival dates. A policy stated for a US Google Store availability date is not the same thing as a promise that every international release uses the same clock.
Choose by update type
If security coverage is your priority, compare security-update duration and cadence separately from the number of Android or One UI generations. If new features matter more, examine OS-upgrade and feature-delivery commitments independently.
Choose by evidence you can verify
For a current purchase, the most useful evidence is the official model policy, the model’s maintenance category and the update history for your carrier. Avoid choosing on a generalized claim that one company is always faster; the published policies do not establish that ranking.
A practical comparison checklist
- Exact model and generation identified.
- Sales region and carrier recorded.
- Original support-clock date found.
- Security-update period separated from OS-upgrade generations.
- Current monthly, quarterly or biannual schedule checked where Samsung publishes one.
- Phased rollout language accounted for on Pixel.
- Remaining support calculated for the purchase date.
- Security-patch arrival compared only with a matched model, market and carrier.
- Major OS upgrades kept separate from security-patch measurements.
- Any delay documented with the patch level, device variant and provider.
Bottom line for Pixel 10 and Galaxy S25 shoppers
Pixel 10 and Galaxy S25 are useful current examples of long-support flagships: Pixel 8-and-later policy language covers the Pixel 10 generation, while Samsung explicitly names the S25 series in its seven-generation, seven-year announcement. The deciding detail is still the exact unit and its support start date.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

For speed, do not rely on a brand slogan. Pixel updates are phased and may take weeks to reach a device; Galaxy maintenance is categorized by model and can be monthly, quarterly or biannual, with carrier, market and OS-upgrade delays. A trustworthy comparison requires release-to-install records for the same patch, model, region and network.

In practical terms, choose the phone with the support window you can verify, the remaining years you actually need and a delivery pattern that fits your tolerance for waiting. That is a more reliable decision rule than declaring Pixel or Galaxy the permanent update-speed winner.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long do Pixel phones get security updates?
Google says Pixel 8 and later phones receive seven years of OS and security updates, counted from first availability in the US Google Store. Google lists Pixel 6, Pixel 7 and the listed Pixel Fold generations for five years. The purchase date does not restart either clock.
How long does Samsung support Galaxy phones?
Samsung’s official S24 and S25 announcements promise seven generations of OS upgrades and seven years of security updates for those named series. That promise should not be extended automatically to every Galaxy A, Z or older model; check the exact model and market.
Are Pixel updates faster than Samsung updates?
The published policies do not establish a universal winner. Google describes phased delivery that may take a few weeks, while Samsung uses monthly, quarterly or biannual model schedules and notes market, provider and OS-upgrade variation. A fair answer requires matched release-to-arrival records.
Do Galaxy phones get monthly security updates?
Some Galaxy models are in Samsung’s monthly group, but others are quarterly or biannual. The category depends on model, market and network provider, and it does not guarantee that every patch arrives on the same date everywhere.
Does the carrier delay Android updates?
It can. Google says Pixel delivery depends on the carrier and device, and Samsung says Galaxy schedules vary by market and network provider. Compare the same model, region and carrier before attributing a delay to the brand.
Does buying a used Pixel or Galaxy reset its update period?
No. Support is tied to the model’s original availability or the manufacturer’s stated start date, not the second owner’s purchase date. Estimate remaining coverage by subtracting elapsed time from the applicable policy period.
Are security updates and Android upgrades the same thing?
No. A security update addresses the device’s security level, while an OS upgrade is a larger Android or One UI release. A phone can stop receiving major OS generations while still receiving security patches, and either type can arrive on a different schedule.
What should I record when an update is late?
Record the exact model and regional variant, whether it is unlocked or carrier-branded, the country and provider, the displayed patch date, the Android or One UI version, and whether a staged rollout or OS-upgrade transition is underway. This prevents a channel-specific delay from being generalized.
The Bottom Line
Pixel and Galaxy flagships can both provide long security coverage, but support length and delivery speed are different questions. Verify the exact model, original support-clock date, security cadence, region and carrier before deciding. Pixel rollouts are phased; Galaxy schedules vary by model and may be monthly, quarterly or biannual.
