Google Pixel’s screen saver and Always-on Display (AOD) are different features for different moments. A screen saver is a configurable full-screen experience that appears while the phone is charging or docked. It can show a clock, photos, Home Controls, Pixel Weather, or compatible apps. AOD is a lock-screen view that keeps the time and selected information visible while the display is otherwise off.
Set up the screen saver under Settings > Display & touch > Screen saver. Manage AOD from Settings > Display & touch > Always-on display (the exact wording can vary by Android version). They can be enabled independently; turning on one does not turn on or configure the other.

At a glance: screen saver or Always-on Display?
| Question | Screen saver | Always-on Display |
|---|---|---|
| When does it appear? | When the Pixel is charging, or charging while upright, according to the selected condition. | When the phone is locked and the main display is otherwise off. |
| What does it show? | A selected experience such as Clock, Photos, Home Controls, Pixel Weather, or a compatible app. | Lock-screen information, principally the time and other status information supported by the phone. |
| How is it configured? | Settings > Display & touch > Screen saver. You choose content, start conditions, preview and low-light behavior. | Settings > Display & touch > Always-on display. Controls and labels vary somewhat by Pixel model and Android release. |
| Does it require charging? | Yes. It is a charging or docked-phone feature. | No charging condition is required for the lock-screen view. |
| Can it show photos or controls? | Yes, where those choices are available on your Pixel. | It is not a second photo slideshow or Home Controls dashboard. |
| Can it show lock-screen wallpaper? | Not as the defining screen-saver function. | Google currently documents this option only for Pixel 10 Pro and Pixel 10 Pro XL. |
In practical terms, use a screen saver when your Pixel is acting like a bedside clock, desk display or charging-screen dashboard. Use AOD when you want to glance at the time and lock-screen status without waking the phone.

A charging-only display experience
Google describes the screen saver as content shown while a Pixel is charging or docked. It is not simply a different name for AOD. The phone waits for the display to time out under the chosen charging condition, then launches the selected screen-saver experience.

- Qi2 Wireless Charger with Stand
- Use the Pixelsnap Charger with Stand to dock your phone upright so it stays useful on its way to full; or detach the charger from the stand to take it on the go[1]
- Do more on your Pixel while you power up; while your phone is docked and charging, you can access your favorite screensavers, display your favorite photos, check the weather, or control your smart home devices
- Getting to a full charge is easier than ever; just rest your phone on the stand and the magnetic technology will snap it right into place – reaching speeds up to 25W to charge your Pixel[1]
- Please refer to the product description section below for all applicable legal disclaimers denoted by the bracketed numbers in the preceding bullet points (e.g., [1], [2], etc.)
The available start conditions depend on the Android version and device. Google’s current instructions use labels such as While charging and While upright and charging. The second condition is useful when the phone is standing on a compatible dock; it avoids showing the screen saver every time the phone is plugged in and left flat.
Content you can select
Open the screen-saver settings to see the choices offered by your Pixel. Google lists these categories in its current Pixel instructions:
- Clock: a clock-focused display suitable for a nightstand or desk.
- Photos: selected pictures shown as the charging display.
- Home Controls: controls for compatible smart-home devices, when the phone and software provide that option.
- Pixel Weather: weather information in the screen-saver view.
- Compatible apps: apps that expose a screen-saver experience to Android.
The exact list is not guaranteed to be identical on every Pixel. Availability can depend on the installed Android release, the phone model, installed apps and account or device configuration.

The Screen saver page includes a preview control so you can check the layout without waiting for the timeout. It also provides low-light settings. In a dim environment, Google says the default behavior is to transition to a low-light clock. Depending on the options shown on your phone, you can instead configure the display to turn off in low light.
Low-light behavior matters in bedrooms and dark offices: a colorful photo or bright controls view may be comfortable in daylight but distracting at night. Preview the result after changing this setting, because the low-light clock is a distinct state from the normal screen-saver view.
Why pressing the Power button can prevent it
To test the screen saver, do not press the Power button to switch the screen off. Google notes that pressing Power prevents the screen saver from starting. Leave the phone charging and allow the display to turn off through its normal screen timeout instead. This distinction explains why a screen saver may appear during an unattended charging session but not when you manually lock the phone.
What Always-on Display does
A lock-screen glance view
AOD keeps selected lock-screen information visible while the rest of the display is off. Google’s Pixel display guidance describes it as a way to check the time and some other information without fully waking the screen. Depending on the model and software, that can include status indicators and notifications represented on the lock screen.

AOD is therefore tied to the phone’s lock-screen state, not to a charger. It can be useful when the Pixel is in your pocket, on a desk or on a table and not connected to power. It is a persistent glance surface rather than a configurable charging slideshow.
Turning AOD off or on
Google’s general path is Settings > Display & touch, where you can find the Always-on display control. The precise menu wording and nearby options can change between Pixel generations and Android versions. If you do not see the control in the first screen, use the Settings search for “Always-on display” and open the matching display setting.
Changing AOD does not alter your screen-saver content, charging condition or low-light choice. Those remain under the separate Screen saver page.
Lock-screen wallpaper on AOD is model-specific
Google’s current lock-screen instructions document Show lock screen wallpaper on AOD only for Pixel 10 Pro and Pixel 10 Pro XL. On those two models, the path is Settings > Display & touch > Always-on display > Show lock screen wallpaper.

The differences that matter in daily use
When each feature starts
A screen saver has a charging prerequisite and normally starts after the display times out. It is designed for a phone that is being left in a charging position. AOD is designed for the locked phone whether it is charging or running on its battery.
This produces different results at a bedside table. A Pixel on a charger can show the selected screen saver after timeout, while AOD can remain the smaller lock-screen information view when the screen is otherwise off. Which view you see depends on the charging state, timeout behavior and the settings enabled on that device.

What each feature is for
Choose a screen saver when the phone should do something visually useful while stationary: show rotating photos, a large clock, weather or smart-home controls. Choose AOD when the goal is a quick glance with minimal interaction and without presenting a full charging dashboard.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →How much you can customize
The screen saver exposes content choices and low-light behavior. Its customization is about the experience shown during charging. AOD customization is about lock-screen information and, on the two documented Pixel 10 Pro models, whether lock-screen wallpaper is visible. The two setting pages should not be expected to contain the same controls.
What “screen off” means for AOD
With AOD, the main interactive display is off, but a limited lock-screen view remains visible. That is different from a screen saver, which can present a larger clock, photo or control interface after the charging timeout. Neither term means that the phone has been powered down.
How to set up a Pixel screen saver
- Open Settings.
- Tap Display & touch, then Screen saver.
- Turn on Use screen saver.
- Choose the content category you want, such as Clock, Photos, Home Controls, Pixel Weather or a compatible app. Follow any category-specific prompts to select a clock style, photo source or controls.
- Set the start condition. Choose the charging option offered by your phone, such as While charging or While upright and charging.
- Open the low-light controls and decide whether the display should transition to a low-light clock or turn off when the surroundings are dim. Google’s default behavior is the low-light clock transition.
- Use the preview control to verify the result.
- Connect the Pixel to its charger or dock, leave it untouched and let the normal screen timeout expire. Do not press Power to force the screen off during this test.
A charging stand is optional. Google’s screen-saver instructions refer to Pixel Stand generations and Pixelsnap Chargers as examples of charging equipment that can be used with a charging-based screen saver. Compatibility and availability depend on the specific phone, charger and region; the basic screen-saver setting does not require one of those accessories.
How to manage Always-on Display
- Open Settings.
- Tap Display & touch.
- Open Always-on display and use the control to enable or disable AOD.
- Review the additional lock-screen options presented on your model. Labels and available controls can differ by Android version.
- If you own a Pixel 10 Pro or Pixel 10 Pro XL and want wallpaper on AOD, open Show lock screen wallpaper in that same AOD section and change the switch there.
After changing AOD, lock the phone normally and wait briefly for the lock-screen view to settle. This tests AOD itself; it does not test the charging trigger required by a screen saver.

Choosing the right feature for common situations
Bedside clock while charging
Use the screen saver if you want a prominent clock during a charging session. Select Clock, choose the charging condition that matches how the phone sits, and configure low-light behavior for the room. If you only want a small time-and-status glance when the phone is locked, AOD may be the better fit.
Photo display on a desk
Use Screen saver > Photos and leave the Pixel charging. AOD is not the setting for a charging photo rotation. Check the preview and low-light transition so the display behaves appropriately when the office lights are turned off.

Smart-home controls at a charging station
If Home Controls is offered in the Screen saver menu, it can turn a charging Pixel into a stationary controls surface. The devices and controls shown depend on your compatible smart-home setup. AOD remains the lock-screen information layer and does not replace that screen-saver dashboard.
Checking notifications without touching the phone
Use AOD. Its purpose is to keep lock-screen information available while the main display is off, regardless of whether the Pixel is connected to a charger. A screen saver is unnecessary unless you specifically want the larger charging experience.
Keeping the bedroom dark
Configure the screen saver’s low-light setting to turn the display off if that option is available, or use the low-light clock transition. Separately, turn AOD off if you do not want any lock-screen information visible. These are independent controls, so changing one does not automatically change the other.
Troubleshooting: why the behavior may not match your expectation
The screen saver never appears
- Confirm Use screen saver is enabled under Settings > Display & touch > Screen saver.
- Check that the phone is actually charging and that the selected condition matches its position. A setting for “While upright and charging” will not necessarily trigger when the phone is lying flat.
- Allow the display to time out. Pressing Power to turn the screen off prevents the screen saver from starting.
- Use the preview control. If preview works but automatic launch does not, the charging condition, timeout or dock position is the likely difference.
- Recheck the menu after an Android update. Google’s labels and available choices can vary by version and device.
The screen saver appears, but the wrong content is shown
- Return to the Screen saver page and verify the selected category rather than assuming AOD controls it.
- For Photos, check the album or source selected in that category.
- For Home Controls or a compatible app, verify that the relevant app and devices are available to the Pixel.
- Use Preview to confirm which layout the phone will launch before leaving it on the charger.
The display becomes a dim clock
This is usually the low-light transition working as configured. Open the screen-saver low-light settings and choose between the low-light clock and turning the screen off, subject to the options your Pixel provides.
AOD wallpaper is missing
Google currently documents lock-screen wallpaper on AOD only for Pixel 10 Pro and Pixel 10 Pro XL. On other Pixel models, look for the standard AOD controls but do not expect the Show lock screen wallpaper switch. Also confirm that you are checking the AOD page, not the separate Screen saver page.
A charger seems to change what is visible
Charging can satisfy the screen saver’s start condition, while AOD is governed by the lock-screen display setting. Test the features separately: first preview the screen saver, then disconnect the charger and lock the phone to observe AOD. This isolates charging behavior from lock-screen behavior without assuming that both features share a layout.

Model, software and accessory limitations
Pixel settings are not perfectly uniform across generations. Google’s current help pages use “Display & touch” and list charging choices and content categories, but a phone running a different Android release may show slightly different labels or fewer options. Treat the controls visible on the device as authoritative for that model and software build.
The Pixel 10 Pro and Pixel 10 Pro XL wallpaper-on-AOD option is the clearest documented model boundary. It should not be generalized to the rest of the Pixel line. Similarly, the presence of a Pixel Stand or Pixelsnap Charger can make a charging setup convenient, but neither accessory is required to understand or configure AOD, and the screen saver still depends on the phone’s supported charging conditions.
Google’s guidance does not establish a single battery-use figure for either feature across Pixel generations. Battery behavior can depend on the model, display technology, brightness, charging state and software. Avoid treating the screen saver and AOD as identical in power use or assuming that a figure from one Pixel applies to another.
Quick Recap
A simple decision rule
- Want photos, weather, Home Controls or a large clock while the phone charges? Configure Screen saver.
- Want the time and lock-screen information visible when the phone is otherwise off? Configure Always-on Display.
- Want lock-screen wallpaper on AOD? Look for that option only on Pixel 10 Pro or Pixel 10 Pro XL, where Google currently documents it.
- Want the screen to stay dark at night? Set the screen saver’s low-light behavior and manage AOD separately.
- Unsure which setting controls what you see? Screen saver settings control the charging experience; Always-on display settings control the lock-screen glance view.
