The Google Pixel 9 is a strong fit if you want a compact-feeling Android phone with a bright display, polished design, capable everyday cameras and a long software-support commitment. Its compromises are just as important: there is no telephoto camera, demanding workloads expose weaker performance than leading chips, and charging is not a standout. Whether it is worth buying now depends on its current price and how much support time remains.
What the Pixel 9 offers
Google announced the Pixel 9 in 2024 with a 6.3-inch Actua display, Tensor G4 processor and 12GB of RAM. Its rear cameras are a 50MP main camera and a 48MP ultrawide. Those figures describe the hardware, not the quality of the photos; independent reviewers generally praise the results for everyday still photography.

Google says the display is 35% brighter than the Pixel 8 and describes the Pixel 9 as “twice as durable as Pixel 8.” Both are manufacturer comparisons, not independent test findings. Google also says active-use battery life with the screen on is approximately 20% longer than Pixel 8; that is Google’s comparison, not a guarantee of the same result for every user. Google’s Pixel 9 announcement has the specifications and claims.

Design and display
TechRadar and Tech Advisor praise the phone’s design and screen. The 6.3-inch size makes it a less imposing choice than many large phones, while the bright display is a practical strength for everyday use. TechRadar’s review and Tech Advisor’s review discuss their impressions.

- Give photos a whole new vision - Reimagine photos in Magic Editor, like adding fall leaves or green grass. Just tap what part you want to change in the photo, and type what you want to see.
Reliable everyday still photography
Reviewers find the main and ultrawide cameras capable for ordinary still photos. Google says those camera types are shared with the Pixel 9 Pro, but the base model does not include all of the Pro’s camera features. That makes the Pixel 9 appealing for general photography, not a replacement for a phone with optical zoom or a full set of advanced controls.
Long software support
Google promises seven years of operating-system updates, Pixel Drops and security updates. The period starts when the phone first became available on the Google Store in the US, not when an individual buyer purchases it. A later purchase therefore does not restart the clock. Google’s Pixel update policy explains the start date.

Where the Pixel 9 falls short
No dedicated telephoto camera
The two rear cameras are a main camera and an ultrawide; there is no telephoto lens. If you often photograph distant subjects, a dedicated optical-zoom camera on another model is a more suitable tool than relying on the Pixel 9’s main camera.
Some features are also reserved for Pro models. Android Central identifies Video Boost, Pro Controls and High-Res photos among features omitted from the base Pixel 9. Feature availability can change with software, so check Google’s current feature information before buying if one of those tools matters to you. See Android Central’s Pixel 9 review.

Performance is not the reason to choose it
TechRadar reports weak benchmark standing and sluggishness in some workloads; Notebookcheck criticizes the Tensor G4 against competing chips and reports throttling in its testing. These are reviewers’ findings under their own test conditions, not a claim that ordinary apps will always feel slow. The practical distinction is that the Pixel 9’s appeal lies more in its software, screen and photography than in top-end processing for demanding tasks.
For gaming or sustained heavy workloads, look for independent testing of the exact models you are considering rather than assuming that similar launch dates imply similar performance. Notebookcheck’s review details its performance assessment.

Battery and charging feedback is mixed
Reviewers do not give a single, consistent verdict on endurance. Tech Advisor calls battery life middling and finds charging speeds confusing, while Notebookcheck counts runtime among the strengths and criticizes charging speed. Google, meanwhile, publishes the screen-on comparison with Pixel 8. These assessments measure different things and should not be collapsed into a promise of all-day use or a definitive battery ranking.
Price makes the recommendation harder
Tech Advisor reviewed the Pixel 9 at a launch-era price of $799/£799 in 2024 and found the price increase made it harder to recommend. That figure is historical, not a current price. Current prices, availability and regional offers have not been established here, so check the listing in your country and compare it with newer Pixel models before deciding whether the hardware is a good value.

Is the Pixel 9 still worth buying?
It can be, if you find it at a price that reflects its age and want a relatively compact Pixel with strong everyday still photos, a bright screen and substantial software support remaining. The support commitment is meaningful, but its seven-year period began with first US Google Store availability; it is not seven new years from the date you buy.
Look elsewhere if optical zoom is important, if you need the strongest processor for demanding work, or if rapid charging is a priority. For a comparison with a Pixel 9 Pro or another phone, weigh these specific factors rather than relying on a blanket ranking:
- Current local price and remaining update-support period.
- Screen size and display features.
- Camera flexibility, especially optical zoom and Pro controls.
- Performance in the workloads you actually run.
- Battery endurance and charging speed.
- Software and AI features you will use, including whether they require a subscription, cloud access or later software availability.
AI features are not a reason on their own to assume the phone will provide a particular capability indefinitely. Reviews describe a range of features, but access and usefulness can vary. Verify current availability and any requirements for the feature you want.

Verdict
The Pixel 9 is a polished everyday phone, not an all-round hardware leader. Its clearest strengths are its display, design, still photography and update commitment; its clearest compromises are the missing telephoto camera, less competitive demanding-workload performance and unremarkable charging. Buy it if the current price is attractive for your needs. At a price close to newer alternatives, compare their cameras, performance and remaining support before committing.
