Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFor a better privacy baseline on the Pixel 10a, review app permissions, lock-screen previews, Google account controls and the camera and microphone switches. For battery life, start with the display, then leave Adaptive Battery and battery optimization enabled unless a particular app is causing trouble. The changes are reversible, but tighter permissions can limit features and background restrictions can delay notifications.
Review app permissions before changing global controls
Use Privacy Dashboard to see which apps have recently accessed sensitive permissions, then use Permission manager to adjust access. You can manage permissions by app or by permission type; the labels and available choices can vary by permission and app.

- Open Settings > Security & privacy > Privacy > Privacy dashboard to inspect recent access.
- Open Settings > Security & privacy > Privacy > Permission manager to review access by permission type, or open an app’s permissions from its App info page.
- For an app that does not need constant access, choose the narrowest available option that preserves the feature you use. Depending on the permission, options can include Allow only while using the app, Ask every time or Don’t allow.
- For apps you rarely use, consider enabling Pause app activity if unused from the app’s App info page.
Location permission may also offer Allow all the time. Reserve it for a feature that genuinely needs location when the app is not open. Restricting access can reduce convenience or prevent a feature from working as intended.
Choose deliberately between location access and location services
There are separate controls for an individual app’s location permission, the phone’s overall Location switch and Location Accuracy. Changing one does not automatically change the others.

- Google Pixel 10a is a durable, everyday phone with more[1]; snap brilliant photography on a simple, powerful camera, get 30+ hours out of a full charge[2], and do more with helpful AI like Gemini[3]
- Unlocked Android phone gives you the flexibility to change carriers and choose your own data plan; it works with Google Fi, Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, and other major carriers
- Pixel 10a is sleek and durable, with a super smooth finish, scratch-resistant Corning Gorilla Glass 7i display, and IP68 water and dust protection[4]
- The Actua display with 3,000-nit peak brightness shows up clear as day, even in direct sunlight[5]
- Plan, create, and get more done with help from Gemini, your built-in AI assistant[3]; have it screen spam calls while you focus[6]; chat with Gemini to brainstorm your meal plan[7], or bring your ideas to life with Nano Banana[8]
- App permission: In Permission manager, choose which apps can access location and when. This is the more selective choice when only a few apps need location.
- Device Location: Open Settings > Location to turn Use location on or off. When it is off, apps and services cannot get the phone’s device location, but local results and ads may still be based on the device’s IP address.
- Location Accuracy: In Settings > Location > Location services, review whether Location Accuracy is enabled. With Location on, location services can use wireless signals and sensors to improve estimates. Turning off location or reducing accuracy can affect location-dependent features; with location available, Find Hub can help locate a lost device.
Google account Activity controls and Location History are separate privacy choices. Changing an app permission does not erase location or other activity already saved to your account. Review these options under Settings > Google > Manage your Google Account > Data & privacy. Google outlines its account and device privacy settings in its Pixel privacy settings guide.
Use camera and microphone switches as a fast privacy stop
Android’s device-wide camera and microphone access controls can block all apps and services from using those sensors. Look in Settings > Security & privacy > Privacy for the camera and microphone access switches. Use Permission manager instead when you want to block one app but keep the sensors available to others.

A global block can make video calls, voice messages, scanning, recording or other sensor-dependent features unavailable until access is restored. Google documents the switches but does not quantify a privacy or battery benefit from turning them off.

Limit lock-screen exposure and review Google data controls
If someone else might see your phone’s notifications, change what appears while it is locked. Open Settings > Notifications > Notifications on lock screen and choose whether to show notification content or hide sensitive details. The exact wording can vary with software version.

In Settings > Security & privacy > Privacy, review Google account Ads, advertising ID and Activity controls, as well as Usage & diagnostics. Google’s privacy settings guide describes these controls. Usage & diagnostics governs a sharing path for device performance and usage patterns, including examples such as battery, thermal and component performance data that may be associated with an identifier. Turning it off does not stop apps or every Google service from collecting data.
Make the display your first battery adjustment
Display settings are practical levers because they affect how long and how brightly the screen is on. Google recommends reducing brightness, using Adaptive brightness, shortening screen timeout, turning off Always-on Display if you do not need it, and avoiding live wallpapers. Dark theme is another option if you prefer its appearance.

- Brightness: Lower it manually or leave Adaptive brightness on at Settings > Display & touch.
- Screen timeout: Choose a shorter interval in Settings > Display & touch > Screen timeout. Google’s battery help gives 30 seconds as an example, not a required setting. The Pixel 10a Safety & regulatory guide states: “Increasing the screen timeout setting from the default setting will increase energy usage and reduce battery life.”
- Always-on Display: Turn it off under Settings > Display & touch > Lock screen if you would rather save power than see glanceable information while the screen is idle.
- Dark theme and wallpaper: Turn on Dark theme from Settings > Display & touch if it suits you, and avoid live wallpapers. These are preference-based adjustments, not guaranteed savings.
Google’s Pixel battery help recommends display adjustments but does not quantify the gain from each one. Do not expect a particular percentage improvement. For Night Light on Pixel 10a, Google lists Settings > Display & touch > Night Light; Night Light changes screen color, and Google does not identify it as a battery-saving setting. See the Pixel display settings guide.

Keep Adaptive Battery on and investigate unusual app drain
Adaptive Battery and per-app battery optimization are on by default, and Google recommends keeping them on for ordinary use. The phone learns usage patterns and can limit background work by less-used apps. Google says this learning can take a few weeks after initial setup or a factory reset.

To check which apps are using power, open Settings > Battery > Battery usage. If an app appears to be draining the battery unusually, review its battery usage and background setting in App info rather than disabling optimization for every app. Allowing more background activity may improve an app’s responsiveness, but optimization can reduce performance or delay notifications. Google’s Adaptive Battery and battery optimization guidance explains the trade-off.
Turn off connections only when you do not need them
Hotspot and tethering use power, so turn them off when no device needs the connection. Adaptive connectivity is available on supported Pixel models from Pixel 4a (5G) onward, though some US carriers may limit it. Find it under Settings > Network & internet > Adaptive connectivity, if available.
Airplane mode, cellular, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth can be switched off in Settings or Quick Settings. Treat these as situational controls, not a blanket battery prescription: disabling a connection can disconnect accessories and networks, limit location assistance, or interrupt calls and data. Google’s battery guidance covers connectivity options.
Balance today’s charge with long-term battery health
Keeping the phone cool supports battery health. If you usually finish the day with charge remaining, Google’s Pixel battery guidance describes an 80% charge limit as an option to reduce long-term battery wear; the trade-off is less charge available for that day’s use. Adaptive Charging is another option for supported usage patterns. Neither setting is a substitute for changing a setting that is responsible for immediate, unusual drain.
If capacity or runtime has significantly decreased and the battery needs replacement, the Pixel 10a safety guide advises contacting Google, a Google service provider or an independent repair professional. See the Pixel battery guidance and Pixel 10a Safety & regulatory guide.
