Google Photos is the more straightforward choice for a Samsung phone’s photo library in 2026. Its Android app combines camera and selected device-folder backup, quality controls, and per-item status in one place. OneDrive is still a sound destination if you already use Microsoft storage, but new phone uploads now go through OneDrive’s Camera backup rather than the former Samsung Gallery connection. Choose based on how you browse photos, which account has free space, and whether preserving every captured pixel is more important than conserving quota.
What changed for Samsung Gallery and OneDrive
Samsung Gallery’s direct synchronization with OneDrive ended on September 30, 2026. The change affects the Gallery integration, not the cloud files that were already uploaded. Microsoft says existing copies remain in OneDrive, while Samsung’s Gallery view and account-link behavior for that service end. You must therefore use the OneDrive app to browse and manage those cloud copies.

For new photographs, Microsoft’s current route is OneDrive’s Android Camera backup. The old Gallery sync switch is no longer a current upload method. This distinction explains why a photograph can be safely present in OneDrive yet absent from Samsung Gallery.

Which service fits your priority?
| Priority | Best fit or action | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Use a photo-focused Android library | Google Photos | Backup, device-folder selection, quality choice, and item-level status are in the Google Photos app. |
| Keep using Microsoft cloud storage | OneDrive Camera backup | New uploads are managed in OneDrive; do not depend on Samsung Gallery to display them. |
| Browse cloud copies inside Samsung Gallery | Neither service provides the former workflow | The direct Gallery-to-OneDrive connection has ended. |
| Preserve captured resolution | Google Photos Original quality, or verified original files in OneDrive | Google documents its Original-quality behavior. With OneDrive, inspect uploaded files rather than assuming a compression setting. |
| Maximize free capacity | Compare the remaining quota in both accounts | Google’s and Microsoft’s headline allowances are shared with other cloud data, not reserved solely for photos. |
| Back up screenshots, downloads, or messaging folders | Configure Google Photos device folders; check OneDrive’s Camera backup scope | Camera-roll behavior and folder controls can differ by app, phone, and permissions. |
There is no universal winner. Google Photos is usually less confusing for a Samsung owner starting from scratch. OneDrive makes sense when your archive already lives there, your Microsoft account has the required capacity, or your work and personal files are managed in the same cloud.

How Google Photos backs up a Samsung phone
Google Photos uploads the folders you enable from the Android device. The camera folder is the usual starting point, but you can add other device folders. That matters because screenshots, downloaded images, and pictures saved by messaging apps may not be in the camera folder.
Set up Google Photos
- Open Google Photos and sign in to the Google Account that should own the archive.
- Open your profile picture, choose Photos settings, then Backup, and turn Backup on.
- Choose Original quality or Storage saver. Read the storage consequence of the selected option before confirming.
- In Backup settings, open the device-folder controls and enable every folder whose images belong in the cloud library. Leave folders containing temporary files or unwanted media disabled.
- Review mobile-data controls if you do not want large uploads to use cellular data. Let the phone remain connected long enough for the initial queue to finish.
Confirm that an item is actually backed up
Open several recent photographs and videos individually. Google Photos shows backup status and details for an item; use that information rather than treating an enabled switch as proof. Check both a camera image and any additional folder you selected. If a connected default gallery is configured to use the account associated with Google Photos backup, verify the account shown in Backup settings so uploads do not go to an unintended Google Account.
Google Photos quality settings and their storage effect
| Setting | What happens to media | Storage treatment |
|---|---|---|
| Original quality | Photos and videos are stored at the same resolution captured. | They count against Google Account storage. |
| Storage saver | Photos above 16 megapixels are resized to 16 MP; videos above 1080p are resized to 1080p. | Uploads count toward storage under current rules. Some media cannot be compressed and remains at its original file size. |
Storage saver is not a guarantee that every file becomes small. A high-resolution photograph can be reduced to the documented ceiling, while an item that Google cannot compress remains unchanged. Historical items uploaded before June 1, 2021 have a special exception under Google’s rules; do not assume that exception applies to new uploads.
Choose Original quality when you may crop heavily, print large photographs, or need the exact captured file. Choose Storage saver when the phone archive is mainly for viewing and sharing and you accept the documented resizing. Changing the preference affects future uploads; review Google’s current controls before attempting any conversion of media already stored.
How OneDrive Camera backup works after the Gallery change
OneDrive’s Camera backup is a separate Android workflow. It uploads eligible phone photographs and videos to the Microsoft account you select, and you browse the result in OneDrive. Samsung Gallery is no longer the intermediary that shows those cloud files.
Enable OneDrive Camera backup
- Open the OneDrive app and sign in to the Microsoft account that should hold the archive.
- Open the account profile and select Camera backup.
- Choose the correct Microsoft account if more than one is available, then turn Camera backup on.
- Grant OneDrive access to the photographs and videos you want it to upload. On Android, review whether access is limited or applies to all relevant media.
- Check the Camera backup controls for video inclusion and Wi-Fi-versus-mobile-data behavior. Set them to match your data plan and your need for video protection.
- Take or select a new test photograph, wait for the upload to finish, and locate it in OneDrive. Also check the account’s remaining quota.
Microsoft documents controls for network use and video uploads, but the exact screens can vary with Android permissions, OneDrive version, Samsung model, and region. If the test image does not appear, confirm the selected account and permissions before changing other settings.
Storage allowances: compare free space, not headline numbers
| Service | Free allowance stated in current help material | What shares that allowance | What happens when you exceed it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Account used by Google Photos | Up to 15 GB per standard account | Google services, including photos and videos and other account data | Uploads and normal account use can be affected; Google also states that photos and videos may be deleted if the account is over quota for two or more years or inactive in Google Photos for two or more years. |
| Microsoft account used by OneDrive | 5 GB free cloud storage | OneDrive files and photos plus other Microsoft cloud storage uses | Microsoft says an over-quota account cannot upload or sync new files, including camera-roll files. |
These are account-wide limits, not photo-only buckets. Existing documents, mail attachments, device backups, and other files can consume space before you add a single camera image. Open each service’s storage view and compare available space with the expected size of your photo and video library. Subscription plans and quota terms can change, so check the current account page before paying for additional capacity.

Microsoft 365 or an expanded OneDrive plan serves the same purpose for a Microsoft archive. Treat the advertised capacity as a ceiling shared by the account, and leave headroom for future videos, which generally consume space faster than still images.
Moving from Samsung Gallery sync to a dependable workflow
If your old photos were already synchronized
Do not delete files from OneDrive merely because they disappeared from Samsung Gallery. Microsoft says already synchronized files remain stored and accessible in OneDrive. Use the OneDrive app to search, organize, download, or share them. The Gallery display change is a change in visibility and account linking, not an instruction to remove the cloud archive.
For new photos going forward
- Decide which account is the long-term owner of the archive: your Google Account, your Microsoft account, or both for separate purposes.
- Enable exactly one primary automatic camera workflow first. Running two services can create two independent copies and consume both quotas, so understand the storage cost before enabling a second backup.
- If OneDrive is primary, use Camera backup and verify a newly captured file in OneDrive. If Google Photos is primary, verify a new file’s backup status in Google Photos.
- Keep Samsung Gallery for local browsing and editing, but do not interpret its cloud view as a complete inventory of OneDrive after the September 2026 change.
- Periodically open older and newer items in the service that owns the archive. A successful setup is one you have checked, not merely one with a switch turned on.
Folder coverage: avoid silent gaps
Camera photographs are only one category of images on a Samsung phone. Google Photos lets you explicitly select device folders, so inspect the list for screenshots, downloads, edited exports, and folders created by messaging applications. Include a folder only when those files belong in the permanent archive; broad selection can upload duplicates, memes, cached images, or temporary exports.
OneDrive’s Camera backup should be checked on the actual phone for what it includes and how it handles videos. The app’s permissions and controls determine the result. If a particular non-camera folder is essential, test it with a distinctive image and confirm its appearance in OneDrive rather than assuming that every Gallery album is covered.

Requirements and common pitfalls
Both workflows depend on the phone’s Android version, Samsung model, app version, region, permissions, and available account quota. A menu shown in an older Samsung Gallery tutorial may no longer exist after the September 30 change. Follow the current controls in Google Photos or OneDrive on the phone you are actually using.
- Wrong account: A phone can have several Google or Microsoft accounts. Read the account name in Backup or Camera backup before uploading a large library.
- Permission limited to selected media: Android may allow access to only chosen photos. Revisit permissions if new captures never enter the queue.
- Video omitted: OneDrive has a control for video uploads. A still image test does not prove that videos are included.
- Network assumptions: Wi-Fi-only settings can leave a queue waiting; unrestricted mobile uploads can consume a data allowance. Set the option deliberately.
- Quota surprises: Mail, documents, and other cloud data share each provider’s allowance. An over-quota Microsoft account stops new camera-roll uploads.
- Duplicate archives: Enabling both services can be useful for separate copies, but it doubles storage consumption and gives you two libraries to audit.
Troubleshooting checklist
A new photo is missing from Google Photos
- Open Google Photos settings and confirm Backup is enabled for the Google Account you intended.
- Check the item’s individual backup status and the device-folder setting for the folder where the image was saved.
- Review mobile-data restrictions and allow the phone time on a suitable network for the queue to complete.
- Check available Google Account storage; other Google services may have consumed the remaining space.
A new photo is missing from OneDrive
- Open OneDrive’s account profile and confirm Camera backup is on for the correct Microsoft account.
- Review Android photo and video permissions, including whether access was limited to selected items.
- Check video and network settings if the missing item is a video or if uploads stop away from Wi-Fi.
- Check Microsoft storage quota. An over-quota account cannot upload or synchronize new camera-roll files.
Cloud photos disappeared from Samsung Gallery
After the September 30, 2026 discontinuation, this is expected for photos that were visible through the former OneDrive link. Open OneDrive to find the cloud copies. Do not treat the Gallery display as evidence that those files were deleted.
The two services contain different numbers of files
Compare folder selections, account identities, upload completion, and video rules. Google Photos may be backing up folders that OneDrive is not, or OneDrive may be using a different Microsoft account. Check several files individually in each service before deciding that one archive is damaged.

Privacy, account ownership, and long-term housekeeping
The account you select determines who can administer the cloud archive and where its quota is charged. Use a personal account you expect to retain, not a temporary school or employer account, unless that organization explicitly owns the archive. Record which account is active in each app and keep recovery details current.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteReview the archive after the initial upload: remove unwanted screenshots and duplicate exports, but only after confirming that the remaining copy is in the intended cloud account. If you use both services, document which is the authoritative library so a future cleanup does not remove both copies accidentally.
Keep a small verification routine: after a trip or important event, open a few recent photos and one video in the cloud app, then check an older item. This catches stalled queues, changed permissions, and quota exhaustion earlier than waiting for a phone replacement to expose a gap.
Decision guide
- Start with Google Photos if you want the least complicated Samsung Android photo workflow, need explicit device-folder selection, and prefer a photo-centered app.
- Use OneDrive Camera backup if your files already belong in Microsoft storage or your household and work documents are managed there, and you are comfortable browsing cloud photos in OneDrive.
- Choose Original quality in Google Photos when retaining captured resolution is essential and your Google quota can support it.
- Choose Storage saver in Google Photos when the documented resizing limits are acceptable and conserving space matters more than maximum pixels.
- Use both only deliberately: two automatic uploads can provide separate copies, but they also consume two quotas and require two places to verify and organize.
Bottom line
For most Samsung owners setting up photo backup now, Google Photos is the clearer default: enable Backup, select the folders you actually want, choose a quality, and verify individual items. OneDrive remains practical for a Microsoft-centered archive, but its current Android path is Camera backup and its cloud library is managed in OneDrive rather than Samsung Gallery. Whichever service you choose, confirm the account, folder scope, quality or video settings, available quota, and completed uploads before treating the archive as your safety net.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I still sync Samsung Gallery directly with OneDrive?
No. Samsung Gallery direct sync to OneDrive ended September 30, 2026. Existing cloud files remain in OneDrive, but Gallery no longer displays them through that connection. Use OneDrive Camera backup for new phone uploads and the OneDrive app to browse older cloud copies.
What happens to photos that were already synced to OneDrive?
Microsoft says they remain safely stored in OneDrive. Their disappearance from Samsung Gallery reflects the discontinued integration, not automatic deletion. Sign in to the same Microsoft account in OneDrive to search, download, organize, or share them.
How do I keep backing up my Samsung Gallery photos?
For Google Photos, enable Backup, select the Google Account, choose quality, and include the device folders you need. For Microsoft storage, enable Camera backup in the OneDrive Android app, grant photo and video access, set network and video preferences, and verify a new upload in OneDrive.
How much free storage do Google Photos and OneDrive provide?
A standard Google Account has up to 15 GB shared across Google services. Microsoft provides 5 GB of free cloud storage shared across Microsoft services. Existing mail, documents, attachments, and other files reduce the space available for photos.
Does Google Photos Storage saver preserve the original resolution?
No. Photos above 16 megapixels are resized to 16 MP, and videos above 1080p are resized to 1080p. Some media cannot be compressed and remains at its original file size. Original quality preserves the captured resolution but uses account storage.
Will OneDrive back up screenshots and messaging-app folders?
Do not assume it will copy every Samsung Gallery album. Check Camera backup’s scope, permissions, video setting, and the actual folder behavior on your phone. Test a distinctive file from any non-camera folder you consider essential.
Why is a photo missing even though backup is turned on?
Check the active account, item-level backup status, selected device folders, Android permissions, network restrictions, and remaining quota. For OneDrive, also check whether video uploads are enabled when the missing item is a video. A switch alone does not prove that an upload completed.
Should I enable both Google Photos and OneDrive?
Only if you intentionally want two independent copies and can manage two quotas. Dual uploads can add resilience, but they also duplicate storage use and require you to verify and clean two libraries. Start with one primary service and add the second after testing the first.
The Bottom Line
Google Photos is the simpler default for Samsung photo backup in 2026. OneDrive remains suitable for Microsoft-centered storage, but new uploads require Camera backup and cloud photos are managed in OneDrive, not Samsung Gallery. Verify accounts, folders, quality, permissions, quota, and completed uploads whichever service you choose.
