Neither service should be treated as an independent second backup by itself.
Choose by the devices and apps you use
Google Photos for Android or a mixed-device household
Google Photos is available on Android and iOS, making it a practical common library when household members use different phone platforms. Google describes automatic upload, search, editing, organization and sharing, and says backed-up items can be accessed on other devices signed in to the same Google Account. On Android, you can choose which device folders are backed up. Check the Google Photos app’s backup status rather than assuming that every item on a phone has uploaded.

Google lists support for formats including HEIC/HEIF and most RAW photos, as well as Live Photos when using Google Photos on iPhone or iPad. Less common formats and media have their own compatibility details in Google’s backup and file-type guidance. Some search and editing features have eligibility conditions tied to factors such as country, language, age and account settings, so their availability is not uniform.
iCloud Photos for an Apple-centered library
If you organize photos in Apple’s Photos app across an iPhone, iPad and Mac, iCloud Photos keeps that library aligned across devices using the same Apple Account. Apple says it stores original formats at full resolution. With Optimize Storage enabled, a device can keep smaller versions locally while the originals remain in iCloud. The feature can save device space, but the library still uses iCloud storage.

Apple also lists browser access through iCloud.com and Windows access through iCloud for Windows. These options are useful beyond Apple hardware, though iCloud Photos remains most closely integrated with the Apple Photos ecosystem. See Apple’s iCloud Photos guide for setup and behavior.
Compare storage by what you actually have available
Google’s included 15 GB is shared among Google Photos, Gmail and Google Drive; it is not 15 GB reserved for pictures. Google says Original quality uploads use that account storage. Its support page lists 100 GB of Google One storage for $1.99 per month in the US. Older High quality or Express quality uploads made before June 1, 2021 do not count toward the quota, according to Google’s storage guidance. See Google One storage information.
Apple’s US iCloud+ page lists these monthly plans. The Google price shown here is the US Google One figure listed by Google; these are not directly equivalent plan sizes.

| iCloud+ | 2 TB | $9.99 |
| iCloud+ | 6 TB | $29.99 |
| iCloud+ | 12 TB | $59.99 |
Prices are those displayed on the official US product pages accessed October 4, 2026. Prices and plan availability may differ by country and change over time. Apple says iCloud+ storage can be shared with up to five other family members at no extra cost. Check Apple’s iCloud+ page and Google’s storage page for current local terms.
A headline quota does not tell you how long it will last: the answer depends on your library’s size and video mix, future uploads, and—in Google’s case—how much Gmail and Drive already use. Check available account storage before choosing a plan or beginning an upload.
Understand syncing, deletion and recovery
iCloud Photos syncs edits and deletions
Apple says changes made to iCloud Photos on one device appear on other devices using the service. Deleting a photo deletes it across those devices too. Accidentally deleted items can be recovered from Recently Deleted for 30 days. This behavior is convenient for keeping one consistent library, but it also means a synced deletion is not a separate backup copy.

Google Photos uploads need a status check
Google’s backup documentation lets you check whether items have backed up and describes accessing them from other devices signed in to your Google Account. Before deleting local originals to free phone space, make sure the relevant items are actually backed up and understand which account holds them.
Keep an independent copy for recovery
Apple explicitly says iCloud Photos media is not duplicated in iCloud Backup and advises users to keep backup copies of their library. More broadly, a synchronized cloud library is not the same thing as an independent second copy: changes or deletions may propagate. If losing the library would be costly, keep a separate copy on another storage destination, such as an external drive, and check that the copy is complete.
Consider sharing and library management
Google describes sharing with contacts who do not use Google Photos. Its product page also advertises search and editing features; feature access can depend on eligibility and settings. Google states: “Google Photos never sells your photos, videos, or personal information to anyone, and we don’t use your photos and videos for advertising.” This is Google’s own description of its practices, not an independent comparison of the services’ privacy.

Apple lists Shared Albums and an iCloud Shared Photo Library for up to five other people among iCloud+ features. These are distinct from simply syncing an individual’s library across their devices. Choose based on how your household already shares and manages photos, and check current feature availability for your devices and region.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Moving from iCloud Photos to Google Photos is a one-time copy
Google documents a transfer request through Apple’s Data and Privacy process. The Apple Account must use two-factor authentication, and the Google Account needs enough available storage. Google estimates the transfer can take 3–7 days. The request copies eligible media; it does not remove the source from iCloud, and later iCloud additions do not automatically sync to Google Photos. Details are in Google’s iCloud Photos transfer instructions.
The transfer has meaningful exclusions and differences:

- All-in-One Design: 1TB external hard drive, multi-port hub and SD/TF card reader combine to provide ample storage and comprehensive connectivity in a single device for seamless multi-device connectivity to enhance your productivity.
- Multiple Interface Support: The product has a built-in 1TB hard disk and supports USB-C, USB 3.2, USB 2.0, SD card slot and TF card slot, which meets the needs of daily work. The product connects to the computer via data cable to realize multi-device interoperability.
- Dual Socket Data Connection Cable: Equipped with USB 3.2 and USB-C dual socket data connection cable, suitable for more models.
- Wide compatibility: Supports Windows, Mac OS, Linux, Android, iOS (iPhone 15 and Later) and other operating systems. Support Desktops, Laptops, SmartPhones, Tablets, TVs and other devices.
- Note: This is only compatible with Apple devices that have a USB‑C port (including iPhone 15 and later, as well as all iPads with USB‑C). Using a Lightning to USB‑C adapter will not resolve the compatibility issue.
- Shared Albums, Smart Albums, Photo Stream content, the video portion of Live Photos, and media not stored in iCloud Photos are excluded.
- Only the latest edits transfer.
- Where possible, photos remain in albums; videos transfer separately and are not placed in albums.
- Google says duplicate items already in Google Photos are kept as a single copy.
Because this is not a continuing two-way bridge, verify the copied library before changing services or deleting anything. If you need a complete archive, account for excluded content separately.
Which one should you choose?
| Your situation | Practical fit | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Android phone or a household with both Android and iPhone | Google Photos | Confirm backup is enabled and that Gmail and Drive have not consumed the storage you need. |
| iPhone, iPad and Mac centered on Apple Photos | iCloud Photos | Decide whether Optimize Storage suits your device-space needs and whether the iCloud tier fits the full library. |
| Heavy Gmail and Google Drive use | Compare remaining Google quota, not just the 15 GB headline | Check current account usage before relying on included storage. |
| Need original-resolution media in an Apple library | iCloud Photos is a direct fit | Remember that originals in iCloud still count against iCloud storage even when a device keeps smaller versions. |
| May switch platforms or want a Google-accessible copy of an iCloud library | Google Photos can work across both mobile platforms | Plan for a one-time transfer, sufficient Google storage and content that may not transfer. |
| Want protection from accidental deletion or account problems | Either service plus an independent copy | Do not rely on synchronization alone as a second backup. |
Google’s 15 GB should not be confused with unlimited free photo uploads: Google describes a shared quota, and Original quality uploads use it. Apple’s iCloud Photos integration is attractive for Apple users, but cloud synchronization still does not create a second independent copy. Select the service whose device fit and storage rules match your routine, then verify backup completion and maintain a separate copy if the photos matter.
