A photo visible in the mobile app is not necessarily backed up. The specific historical “skipping pictures” incident implied by an “Update: fixed” label is not independently confirmed by a Google announcement, release note, or reproducible version report, so treat that claim as unverified.
First, determine what “skipping” means
Different symptoms point to different causes. You may see a batch counter reach zero while some files are absent from photos.google.com, find that camera photos uploaded but screenshots or WhatsApp media did not, or see a picture in the app on one device but not on another. A browser upload can also look idle before it has finished.

Google explains that the app can display photos stored on the device even when they are not backed up to the selected account. Check the item itself before deleting anything. Google’s backup troubleshooting guide documents item-level states such as uploading, queued or paused, not backed up, permanent failure, and backed up.
Verify one missing photo before changing settings
- Open Google Photos and select the suspected missing item.
- Tap More, or swipe up to open About or Details.
- Read the backup state. “Uploading” or “In queue/paused” means it has not been skipped permanently; a cloud-slash or permanent-failure state requires troubleshooting.
- Confirm the same item at photos.google.com while signed in to the intended account.
The web check separates a local-library display from an actual cloud copy. Do not use Free up space until this check succeeds for the files you care about.

Fixes in the order that prevents data loss
1. Confirm the Google Account
- Tap your profile picture or initial in Google Photos.
- Note the active account.
- Open Photos settings → Backup and check Backup account.
- Open photos.google.com with that exact account.
Photos can remain visible locally while another account is selected, making a successful backup appear to be missing.
2. Inspect global backup status
Tap or pull down on the status at the top of Google Photos. It may say Backup complete, Backup is off, Backing up with a remaining count, Preparing backup, Waiting for connection, Waiting for Wi‑Fi, or Backup paused. Wait for the count to change before concluding that files were skipped. See Google’s backup-status instructions.
3. Enable the folders that contain the files
On Android, open Profile picture → Photos settings → Backup → Back up device folders. Turn on the folders for screenshots, Downloads, WhatsApp, Telegram, or other apps. Camera backup does not automatically include every device directory. This setting is one of the most common reasons screenshots or messaging images are absent. 4. Check account storage
Google Account storage is shared by Google Photos, Gmail, and Drive. If the quota is full, new uploads can stop. Check the warning in Photos, review your account storage, remove unneeded data or add capacity, then retry one small sample. Extra storage cannot repair an unselected, unsupported, or corrupt file.

Google’s listed limits are 200 MB or 200 megapixels per photo, 10 GB per video, and dimensions greater than 256 × 256 pixels. Google supports common formats such as JPG, HEIC/HEIF, PNG, WEBP, GIF, AVIF, many RAW formats, and numerous video formats, but unlisted types may fail. For a failed item, check its extension and size, open it locally, and try Back up now. Making a JPEG or standard video copy can be a diagnostic test; conversion is not a universal requirement and may change quality or metadata.

6. Find zero-byte and damaged files
A gallery thumbnail or database entry does not prove that the underlying file still exists. In Android’s Files by Google, open Images or Videos, sort by Smallest first, and look for files showing zero bytes. Remove or replace empty files, then retry valid originals. Google specifically recommends this check in its troubleshooting guidance.
7. Keep Android from stopping background work
Connect the phone to power and reliable Wi‑Fi, leave Photos open for the first test, and review restrictive data settings. In Android Settings, search for Battery optimization, Battery usage, or Optimize battery, choose Photos, and select Don’t optimize or Unrestricted when offered. Manufacturers rename these menus. Google notes that backup can pause when the screen is off or the device is in a saver state. Mobile-data backup may be faster but can consume a carrier allowance.

8. Retry the actual files
For one item, select it, open its details, and tap Back up now if that option appears. For several, touch and hold one item, select the rest, and tap Back up. Wait for the item status to change, then verify the files on the web.

If the queue is stuck
- Recheck the account and available storage.
- Confirm the device folder is enabled.
- Connect to power and stable Wi‑Fi.
- Remove battery optimization and restrictive background-data limits.
- Restart the phone.
- Open Photos and inspect the status again.
- Test one known-missing photo, then a small batch.
- Update Google Photos through the device’s official app store.
- Only afterward consider clearing the cache or reinstalling.
Clearing app storage or data is different from clearing cache: it can remove local app state and erase useful diagnostic context. Reinstalling may help an app-specific fault, but it cannot select a disabled folder, restore a corrupt file, or change the account that contains the backup.

Android menu paths do not apply to iOS. In Google Photos, confirm Backup is enabled and that iOS has granted access to all photos. For a large first upload, keep the app open, connect to power and Wi‑Fi, check available device storage, and avoid restrictive low-power conditions. Confirm the selected Google Account, then verify the result at photos.google.com. If only some albums or media are absent, inspect the original file and permissions rather than assuming a service-wide bug.
Computer uploads and migration tools
For browser uploads, allow the transfer to finish, check the connection, and make sure the folder did not change during the upload. Unsupported or damaged files can fail inside an otherwise valid folder, and duplicate-looking names can make completed items hard to identify. Confirm the destination account on the web.

Third-party tools are a separate failure point. A 2026 report for the immich-go importer describes logs that indicated successful processing while files remained absent until an extracted folder was used instead of a ZIP archive. That report concerns the importer workflow, not proof of a Google Photos upload defect: issue 1296.
When a Google-side bug becomes plausible
Escalate through Google’s support or feedback channels when the account has space, the correct folders are enabled, files are valid and within limits, and manually selected items still fail. A service defect is more credible if multiple file types and folders fail, the behavior reproduces across devices or accounts, or Photos repeatedly reports permanent failure without a file-specific explanation. Preserve the originals, note the device and app version, capture the item status, and record the exact steps that reproduce the problem.
Do not state that the historical incident is “fixed” without evidence identifying the platform, affected version, date, and fix—such as an official Google response, release note, or reproducible before-and-after test. No such confirmation establishes a universal fix for the incident implied by the original headline.
Before deleting local originals
- Verify the intended account at photos.google.com.
- Open several supposedly backed-up files, including the largest and most unusual ones.
- Keep a separate local copy or export with Google Takeout if the originals are important.
- Only then use cleanup tools or remove files from the phone.
Google Takeout creates an export; it is not a continuous backup replacement. More storage, through Google One, is relevant only when quota exhaustion is confirmed.

Check the account, item-level status, device-folder selection, storage, file limits, file integrity, and Android background restrictions before calling the behavior a Google Photos bug. Verify every important file on the web and keep an independent copy until the backup is demonstrably complete.
