Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?

Choosing Save as copy protects the source by creating a separate edited image, but Google Photos does not provide a Revert history for that copy. The correct choice depends on whether you need an undoable edit or an untouched original.
Save and Save as copy are different workflows
Google Photos presents two save outcomes, and they are not interchangeable. The option you choose determines whether the edited item remains connected to a Revert command.

| Save choice | What happens to the source | Can Revert undo it? | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Save | Applies the edits to the original photo when this option is offered. | Generally yes. Open the editor, choose Revert, and save the result. | Google says Save may not be available for certain edits. |
| Save as copy | Creates a new photo with your edits and leaves the original unchanged. | No. Google explicitly says changes to a photo saved as a copy cannot be undone with Revert. | The untouched original remains available as a separate item; delete the unwanted copy if necessary. |
Google describes the copy option this way: “Save as copy: Makes a new photo with your edits without changes to the original.” The wording and button placement can vary by device, so check which choices appear at the bottom of your editor before committing an edit. The Android instructions are in Google’s Android help page, and the iPhone and iPad instructions are in Google’s iOS help page.

For a photo changed and saved to the original, Revert is the built-in route back to the earlier version. You do not need to recreate the crop, filter, lighting adjustment or other settings manually. Open the edited item, enter Edit, select Revert, and save when prompted.

A saved copy works differently. It is a separate photo rather than an editable version with a Revert trail. Selecting Revert while viewing the copy will not restore the source image because the source was never changed. If the copy is wrong, remove that copy and edit the original again; deleting the copy does not modify either the original or another copy.
Reversibility also depends on whether Google offers Save for the particular operation. Google notes that some edits can only be saved as a copy. If the original-save choice is absent, treat the result as a new file and keep the untouched source as your fallback.
Android: save an edit and revert it
Before saving
- Open Google Photos and select the photo.
- Tap Edit. The editor may show categories such as Markup, Filters, Crop, Adjust and Actions. Depending on the phone, Actions can include tools such as Magic Eraser, Unblur or Best Take.
- Make the adjustment. To compare the preview with the current source while you are still editing, touch and hold the preview.
- Tap Save at the bottom. If Google offers both choices, select Save to apply the edit to the original or Save as copy to create a separate photo.
Tool availability varies by device, and Google may require additional editing tools to be installed. The presence of a tool does not change the save rule: an edit saved to the original can generally be reverted, while an edit saved as a copy cannot be undone through Revert.
Undo an edit saved to the original
- Open the edited photo in Google Photos.
- Tap Edit.
- Tap Revert.
- Tap Save to confirm the restored version.
If you selected Save as copy earlier, these steps do not roll the copy back. Locate the original photo instead; it should still be unchanged.

iPhone and iPad: use Revert or preserve the source
Choose the save outcome
- Open the photo in the Google Photos app and tap Edit.
- Apply your changes and review the preview.
- Use the save control at the bottom. Save updates the original when available; Save as copy creates a separate edited photo.
Google’s iOS documentation follows the same rule as Android: edits saved as a copy cannot be undone with Revert. The Save option can be unavailable for some edits, so do not assume every tool can overwrite the source.
Revert an original-saved edit
- Open the edited item.
- Tap Edit.
- Choose Revert.
- Save the result when Google Photos asks you to confirm.
Google lists iOS 18 and 3 GB of RAM for most editing features, with higher memory requirements for some tools. These are feature-eligibility specifications, not a guarantee that a particular edit will be reversible. They can change with app and operating-system updates; check the current iPhone and iPad help page for your version.
Computer: revert at photos.google.com
- Go to Google Photos on the web and open the edited photo.
- Click Edit.
- Click Revert.
- Click Save to apply the restoration.
For a new, independent result, use the editor’s copy-saving command when it is offered. This is also the documented way to keep an edit private when the source is in a shared album. Google notes that some editing features are unavailable on mobile web, so a phone browser should not be expected to show the same controls as the Google Photos app or a desktop browser.
If Revert is missing or does nothing
Google’s troubleshooting guidance identifies two straightforward explanations: the photo may never have been edited, or it may already have been reverted. First confirm that you opened the edited item rather than an unedited original or a separate copy. If you already used Revert, there is no additional edit state for the button to remove.

Next, check whether the item was saved as a copy. A copy has no Revert history by design. The practical remedy is to delete the unwanted copy and work from the unchanged original, not to expect Revert to alter the copy.
There is a harder limit when another application saved the file incorrectly. Google says Photos cannot recover an original file that was saved incorrectly by the camera app. In that situation, Revert in Google Photos is not a file-recovery mechanism; look for another original elsewhere, such as the camera’s own storage or a backup, if one exists.
Do not promise recovery based on a missing button alone. The Google troubleshooting page describes the documented cases, while user discussions can include unverified suggestions. For example, the Google Photos Community thread titled “Undo a saved edited picture” reflects a common reader question, but community posts are not authoritative product instructions.

Shared albums: reversibility versus visibility
Shared albums introduce a separate privacy decision. Google says only the owner of the original photo or video can edit the shared item. If that owner saves changes to the shared item, people who can view the album may see the edited version. The edit may still be reversible through Revert when it was saved to the original, but the viewers have already been exposed to the changed presentation.

To work privately, save a copy instead of changing the shared item. The copy is separate from the shared source, so its edits are not pushed to album viewers. Remember that the copy itself cannot be reverted; make further changes from the original or create another copy. Device wording can differ, but Google documents this owner-and-visibility behavior in its Android and shared-album instructions and the computer guidance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Editing tools and device requirements
Reversibility is controlled by the save destination, not by whether the tool is called a filter, crop or AI-assisted action. Google’s editor can include the following groups:
- Markup: drawing or annotating on the image.
- Filters: applying a preset visual treatment.
- Crop: changing framing or aspect ratio.
- Adjust: changing image characteristics such as light or color.
- Actions: device-dependent tools such as Magic Eraser, Unblur and Best Take.
Google publishes baseline requirements for some features. Treat these as current-at-check eligibility guidance rather than a measure of edit safety:
Recommended Free Tools
| Platform | Google’s stated baseline for most listed editing features | Higher requirements or caveat |
|---|---|---|
| Android | Android 8.0 or later and at least 3 GB RAM. | Some tools require 4 GB or 6 GB RAM; availability depends on the device and may require installing editing tools. |
| iPhone and iPad | iOS 18 and at least 3 GB RAM for most features. | Some tools require more memory. Requirements are version-sensitive. |
Neither platform’s memory or operating-system requirement makes a saved copy reversible. Conversely, meeting the requirement does not ensure that every tool will offer Save to the original. Check the current platform-specific help before troubleshooting an option that is not shown.

A safe decision process before you tap Save
Use Save when you need an undoable edit
Choose Save only when changing the original is acceptable and you want the Revert command available later. This is useful for a quick crop, color correction or other adjustment where you expect to refine the same photo. Confirm that Save is actually offered; Google can restrict it for certain edits.
Use Save as copy when preservation or privacy matters
Choose Save as copy when the source must remain untouched, when you are experimenting with a major transformation, or when the photo belongs to a shared album and the result should not be visible to other viewers. Give the copy a clear place in your library so you can distinguish it from the source. Because the copy has no Revert history, keep the original until you are satisfied with the result.
Check the result immediately
After saving, open the library view and verify whether you now have one changed item or an additional copy. If the original was changed and you regret it, use Edit, Revert and Save promptly. If an additional copy was created, return to the original for further edits rather than trying to revert the copy.
The rule to remember
Google Photos has two different kinds of safety: Revert safety for edits saved to the original, and source-preservation safety for edits saved as a copy. You can generally undo the first; you cannot use Revert to undo the second. Select the save command based on which kind of protection you need before finishing the edit.
