Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallGoogle Photos has three separate decisions that are easy to confuse. When the app offers Save, it applies the edit to the original item; Save as copy creates a new edited photo and leaves the original unchanged. If backup is enabled, the result of either choice syncs to your Google Photos account. Separately, the account’s backup-quality setting controls whether backed-up files retain their captured resolution or are compressed or resized.
Those rules apply differently across Android, iPhone or iPad, and computer, and some edits do not offer every save option. Use the item’s Details panel to check what quality and size were actually stored instead of inferring it from the editor.

The short answer: editing, syncing, and quality are different controls
Editing a picture does not automatically mean that Google Photos creates a second copy, and backup quality does not decide whether your source is preserved. Treat the workflow as three independent layers:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →| Decision | What it controls | What can happen |
|---|---|---|
| Editor save choice | Whether the source item is changed | Save changes the original when that option is available. Save as copy creates a separate edited item and leaves the source untouched. |
| Backup status | Whether the saved result is synchronized to your Google Photos account | With backup on, edits sync to the account. With backup off, the edit is not being uploaded by Google Photos at that time. |
| Backup quality | Resolution, compression, and account-storage use of backed-up media | Original quality keeps captured resolution; Storage saver or Express can resize or compress eligible files. |
Google’s current help pages describe these behaviors for the Android, iPhone and iPad, and computer interfaces, but labels and available features can vary by platform, device, file, and region.

Does Google Photos overwrite the original?
Choose Save when changing the existing item is acceptable
On Android and iOS, Save applies your adjustments to the original photo when Google Photos makes that choice available. Google notes that Save may not appear for certain edits. The result remains the same library item rather than an automatically generated duplicate. Read the platform guidance for Android or iPhone and iPad for the controls shown on your device.
Use Save for routine corrections when you do not need a separate untouched version. If the photo is important evidence, a family archive, or a source you may want to re-edit later, do not assume that Revert is an equivalent substitute for a preserved copy.
Choose Save as copy to protect an untouched version
Save as copy makes a new photo with your edits without changes to the original. The unedited item stays in your library, while the edited result appears as another item. This is the explicit preservation option Google documents for Android and iOS.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Open the photo in Google Photos and enter the editor.
- Make the adjustments you want.
- When the editor presents save choices, select Save as copy rather than Save.
- Return to the library and check that both the original and edited item are present before deleting anything.
Google says Revert can undo changes to an edited photo, but it cannot undo changes to a photo that was saved as a copy. That means a copy is a one-way creation from the editor’s perspective: keep the original item if you may need the unedited pixels later.

Computer editing has its own limitations
The computer editor at photos.google.com also supports saving edits. In shared-album instructions, Google calls the private option Save copy; wording can differ from the mobile app. For RAW images, Google’s computer editor converts the edited result to JPEG. If you need the RAW file for a supported third-party editor, download the RAW file instead of treating the JPEG result as a RAW original. This computer-specific RAW behavior should not be generalized to every platform or file type.
Do edits sync when backup is on?
Backup determines account synchronization, not copy creation
Google says that when backup is turned on, edits sync to the Google Photos account. This explains how a change reaches the cloud, but it does not say that every edit creates a second cloud copy. The number of items depends first on whether you selected Save or Save as copy and second on which save action the particular editor offers.
For example, saving a crop with Save changes the existing item and that changed item can sync. Saving the same crop as a copy creates a second item and that new item can sync, while the untouched source remains available. Turning backup on or off does not convert one choice into the other.

Check backup before assuming another device will show the edit
If backup is disabled, an edit made on one device is not being uploaded by Google Photos at that moment. Before expecting the result on another phone or at photos.google.com, open Google Photos’ backup settings and confirm that backup is enabled and that the item has finished uploading. A copy made while backup is off can still exist locally; synchronization is a separate step once backup is enabled.

Backup can also be limited by account storage, file eligibility, or a paused upload. Those conditions affect synchronization, not the meaning of Save as copy. If a result is missing online, first check the item’s local status and the account that is signed in.
Does editing a photo in Google Photos reduce quality?
The edit itself and the quality of the backed-up file are separate questions. Google’s backup-quality setting determines how media is stored in the account. The following are Google-published product specifications from Choose the backup quality of your photos & videos, not independent image-quality tests.
| Setting | Photos | Videos | Storage and caveats |
|---|---|---|---|
| Original quality | Stored at the same resolution as captured, with no quality change. | Stored at the captured resolution, subject to Google’s file support rules. | Counts toward account storage. Google recommends it for photos above 16 megapixels, videos above 1080p, and large banner prints. |
| Storage saver | Photos above 16 MP are resized to 16 MP; Google says some uploads may be converted to another format, such as JPG. | Videos above 1080p are resized to 1080p. | Uses account storage and is described as slightly reduced quality. Files that cannot be compressed may remain at their original size. |
| Express | Where available, photos above 3 MP may be resized to 3 MP. | Videos above 480p may be resized to 480p; some information, such as closed captions, may be lost from resized video. | Availability varies by country or region. It is intended for smaller uploads and can make a substantial difference for printing or detailed crops. |
Original quality therefore does not mean “the editor never changes anything”; it means the backed-up media is stored at captured resolution without the quality reduction associated with the other settings. Conversely, Storage saver or Express can reduce the resolution of a saved edit even when you used Save as copy, because the copy and the backup-quality policy are independent.
Legacy names and dates
Google formerly called Storage saver High quality. Google says items backed up in High quality before June 1, 2021 do not count toward storage. That is a historical rule for older uploads, not a promise that current Storage saver uploads are free. Google also documents a historical Express exception before June 1, 2021. Do not use either legacy exception to predict how a new upload is charged today.

How to verify the quality and size of one item
Do not guess from the appearance of a thumbnail. Google says the photo or video’s Details view shows its backup quality and size.
- Open the specific photo or video in Google Photos.
- Open its Details information panel.
- Read the listed backup quality and file size, and compare them with the captured dimensions shown there.
- If you attempted Storage saver and the item cannot be compressed, Google may display Not eligible for Storage saver.
Express may not appear as a choice at all if it is unavailable in your country or region. An absent option is therefore not proof that the app is malfunctioning; regional availability is part of the product design.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What happens in a shared album?
Only the owner can edit the original
Google says only the owner of the original photo or video can edit it in a shared album. If the owner saves changes to the original, people who have access to the shared album can see those changes.
Use a copy for a private variation
On Android, Google’s shared-album guidance says that saving changes to the shared album reflects the edit for other participants. To keep an edit private, do not save it to the shared album; instead edit the item in your gallery and use the copy option. The computer guidance similarly describes Save copy as the private route. This is useful for making a crop, color treatment, or annotation for yourself without changing what collaborators see.
Best Value
Because shared-album visibility follows the save destination, check the wording of the confirmation button before committing an edit. A copy stored outside the shared album can still be backed up to your account if backup is enabled, but it will not silently replace the owner’s shared item.
If the photo looks wrong, can Google Photos restore the original?
Google’s troubleshooting page, My photos appear incorrectly, advises checking the local file in your device’s Files app as well as the version on photos.google.com. If the file is incorrect in both places, Google says the camera app may have saved it incorrectly and Google Photos cannot recover the original camera file.
If the backed-up photo was edited, Google’s direction is to revert the edit first. That can restore an item changed with the editor when Revert is available. It cannot undo the creation of a separate Save as copy, and it cannot reconstruct pixels that were already damaged before upload. Cloud backup is not a time machine for a file that entered the camera roll incorrectly.
Choosing the right workflow
| Your priority | Save choice | Backup-quality choice | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Keep an untouched family or work original | Save as copy | Original quality if resolution must be preserved | The source remains a separate item, and Original quality avoids Google’s documented resizing thresholds. |
| Quickly correct an everyday shot | Save, if offered | Any setting that fits your storage and resolution needs | You are changing the existing item and do not require a second library entry. |
| Make a private version of a shared photo | Save as copy outside the shared album | Check the account setting before backup completes | The shared item remains unchanged for other participants. |
| Preserve detail for a large print or heavy crop | Save as copy if the source must remain untouched | Original quality | Google specifically recommends Original quality for photos above 16 MP, videos above 1080p, and large banner prints. |
| Minimize upload size where available | Either save choice, depending on whether a source copy is needed | Express, if offered in your region | Express can resize photos above 3 MP and videos above 480p, so inspect the result before relying on it for detailed work. |
Storage limits and practical checks
Google says an account comes with up to 15 GB of storage; the cited help page does not state a publication year for that figure. Backed-up media stored in Original quality and current Storage saver uses account storage under Google’s rules. If capacity is a concern, review the quality setting and the Details panel for large items before assuming an edit failed.
- Confirm you are editing the intended item, especially when a Save as copy has produced two visually similar thumbnails.
- Use Details to verify the stored size and backup quality rather than relying on the editor preview.
- When a save option is missing, recognize that Google documents some edits as having no Save choice; the available controls can differ by platform and device.
- For RAW work on a computer, keep the downloaded RAW separately if you need that format; the web editor’s edited result is JPEG.
- Before editing a shared item, decide whether everyone with access should see the change or whether a private copy is safer.
The reliable mental model is simple: first choose whether to alter the source or make a copy, then decide whether backup should synchronize that result, and finally verify which quality policy stored it. Keeping those decisions separate prevents the most common surprises about disappearing originals, duplicate photos, and unexpected resolution.
