On Android, you can keep one photo from a stack and send the rest to Trash. To free cloud storage, review Manage storage; to free phone storage, use “Free up space on this device.” Those actions solve different problems, and deleting a backed-up photo can remove it from other synced devices too.
What Google Photos can identify as a duplicate
Google’s “Stack similar photos” feature groups nearly identical photos of the same subject taken together within a short time. These Photo stacks make similar shots easier to review, but they do not change available storage. Google describes this feature as grouping similar photos, not as scanning an entire library for every exact duplicate or repeated upload. Google Photos Help: Organize your Photos view

That distinction matters: a burst of nearly identical pictures may appear in a stack, while copies uploaded at different times or repeated across folders may not. The documented feature does not promise to find every case of identical files or cross-device duplication.

Remove extra similar shots from a Photo stack
Photo stacks are available in the Google Photos app. Google’s documented “Keep this, delete rest” workflow is for Android; labels or menu placement can vary with platform and app version. Stacks also require backup to be on, and newly taken photos may take time to be grouped. Google Photos Help: Organize your Photos view

- Open the Google Photos app and find a Photo stack in your Photos view.
- Open the stack and review its images. Choose the photo you want to keep.
- Open the stack’s menu and select “Keep this, delete rest.” Follow the current in-app prompts to move the other images to Trash.
Review the selected keeper before confirming: this is a review-and-select action, not automatic deletion of every duplicate in your library.
Choose the right cleanup for the space you need
Google Photos has separate ways to address account storage and storage on the phone. Neither is a substitute for the other.

Free up Google Account storage
Open Google Photos settings and go to Manage storage; the precise route can differ by platform or account. Review the suggested cleanup categories and select only items you recognize and want to remove. Recommendations can include large photos and videos, so this is broader account-storage cleanup rather than a duplicate search. You can also check Google One’s storage manager. Deleting an item does not necessarily increase available account storage: Google notes that some items do not count toward the account-storage limit.

Free up storage on the phone
In Google Photos, use “Free up space on this device” for items that are already backed up. This removes their device copies while leaving them accessible in Google Photos, provided you are signed in and online. It targets local device storage, not duplicate entries in the cloud library. Check what deletion will affect before confirming
Deleting from Google Photos can also remove the same item from devices where backup is on. Confirm that you have selected the intended copy and understand whether it is backed up before sending it to Trash. Google’s current help guidance says backed-up deleted items stay in Trash for 30 days before permanent deletion. When you need to find exact repeated uploads
The documented Photo-stack feature covers nearly identical shots taken together, not a comprehensive search for every identical file, repeat import, or copy across devices. If an exact repeated upload is not grouped into a stack, the cited Google tools do not establish an automatic duplicate-only cleanup workflow. Use Manage storage only for its recommendations, and inspect items yourself before deletion; avoid assuming that a storage recommendation means an item is a duplicate.
