Google Photos Deleted Photos: Check Trash and Restore Them Fast

To recover deleted photos from Google Photos, check Trash immediately: you can restore an item only while it remains there. First verify that you’re viewing the right Google Account, then check Archive and Trash. If the item is no longer in Trash, Google says it can’t be restored through Google Photos; look for another copy on a device or backup instead.

How to find and restore a deleted photo

  1. Check the Google Account. In Google Photos, tap or click your profile icon and confirm the account. If you use more than one account, check each one. Review Backup settings to see which account receives backups; a photo may not have been backed up to the account you’re viewing. Google’s missing-photo guidance covers account and backup checks.
  2. Check Archive. An archived photo is hidden from the main library view, not deleted. Open Archive and, if you find the photo, unarchive it. Google explains the distinction in its Archive help.
  3. Open Trash and restore the item if it is there.
    • On a computer: Sign in at photos.google.com, open Trash, select the photo or video, and choose Restore.
    • On Android: In Google Photos, open Trash. Depending on the app version, you may find it under Collections or Library. Select the item and tap Restore.

Google says a restored item returns to the Google Photos library and may return to albums and the phone gallery. See Google’s restore instructions for the current help-page steps.

  4. If the photo wasn’t backed up, check the device Gallery app’s Trash. Google’s Android recovery guidance directs users to check Gallery Trash for items deleted from the device. If an unbacked item was permanently deleted from the device Gallery, Google says it cannot be restored through those trash flows.
  5. Look for another copy before making further changes. Check other phones or tablets, memory cards, computers, and any separate backup or export. Google’s missing-photo guidance includes copies from other apps and devices among the places to check.

How long does Google Photos keep items in Trash?

Check as soon as you can. Google’s current desktop restore help page says photos and videos in Trash are permanently deleted after 30 days. Recent 2026 answers from Google Photos Help Community Product Experts describe a different, account-dependent distinction: backed-up items may remain for 60 days, while unbacked items remain for 30 days. The official desktop help page does not explain that distinction, so treat the 60-day figure as community guidance, not a universal guarantee. The decisive question is whether the item is still visible in your Trash.

Google’s restore help states: “Items that are permanently deleted can’t be restored.” If the item is absent from Trash, Google Photos does not provide a restore route for it. A support request or recovery app cannot be relied on to reverse permanent deletion from Google’s cloud; seek a surviving copy elsewhere.

What Google Photos deletion can affect

Deleting an item in Google Photos can also remove it from Android or iOS devices where the app is installed and Backup is turned on. Google says deletion can affect Google Photos albums and shared locations described on its deletion-effects help page. However, deletion from Google Photos does not automatically remove separate copies in services such as Blogger, Drive, Gmail, or YouTube. Check those services if you may have saved or shared a copy there.

Could account inactivity explain missing photos?

Google has a separate inactivity policy, distinct from Trash retention. According to its Google Photos activity and storage help, content may be deleted after two years or more of inactivity. Google says it will give at least three months’ notice before possible deletion and allow users to download their Google data. Photos and videos are not deleted under this inactivity policy if the user has a Google One membership in good standing.

How to protect photos you still have

After recovering or locating a surviving copy, consider keeping an additional copy outside the Google account—for example, on a computer, a separate backup destination, or removable storage. Choose a method with enough capacity and a restore process you can use; consider whether it is independent of your Google account and whether it has ongoing costs. An external drive or backup does not recover a photo already permanently deleted from Google Photos; it only helps protect copies you preserve going forward.
