Google Photos backup, the account receiving those backups, and the folders included are separate settings. A photo appearing in the app does not prove it is safely backed up to the account you expect. Before changing sync or deleting anything, verify those settings and make a separate, usable copy of important files.
What Google Photos backup does—and what it does not tell you
Google describes Backup as saving photos and videos to a Google Account. Sync makes backed-up items accessible across signed-in devices. Those ideas are related, but checking one does not confirm the others: you need to know whether backup is on, which account is selected, and whether a particular photo has finished uploading. Google’s backup status guide explains the status indicators, including no backup, preparation, upload in progress, completion, and stopped states.

In Google Photos, check the account shown in the app and the Backup setting. If the status of one image matters, open its details or check its backup marker rather than inferring its status from its presence in the app. A photo may be visible locally without being backed up, or may have been backed up to a different account than intended.

On Android, Google Photos can back up selected device folders in addition to the camera folder. That may include folders used by messaging, editing, or other apps, depending on what is selected on the phone. Google’s guide to items from other apps and devices describes reviewing individual folder switches and the option to include all device folders.

- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
- Open Google Photos and tap your profile picture or initial.
- Open Photos settings, then Backup.
- Choose Back up device folders and review the folders that are on.
- Check whether the setting to back up new device folders is enabled, if shown. Turn off only the folders you do not want uploaded.
These device-folder controls are specific to Android; do not assume the same menu or behavior applies on iPhone or desktop. Turning off a folder’s backup stops future uploads from that folder; it does not, by itself, remove items already in your Google Photos library.
Make a separate copy before risky changes
If photos matter, create a copy outside the Photos library before deleting items or changing backup behavior. Google lets you download individual photos or videos to a device; its computer download instructions also point to exporting all photos or videos. Google Takeout can create an archive of Photos data for records or transfer. Google says downloading a copy does not delete the server copy; see Takeout’s instructions.

- Easily store and access 5TB of content on the go with the Seagate portable drive, a USB external hard Drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
- Download individual files or start a Google Takeout export, depending on whether you need a few items or a library copy.
- Save the copy somewhere separate from the Google Photos account, such as local storage or an external drive with enough space for the files.
- Open a sample of the downloaded files and check that the archive or download is usable before proceeding with deletion or broad setting changes.
Do not assume an export will be immediate or that it reproduces every organizational detail exactly. The separate copy is a fallback for the files themselves, not a way to change what sync does.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsChoose the action that matches your goal
| What you want | Action | Important effect |
|---|---|---|
| Remove an item from the main gallery view | Archive it | It is hidden from the main view, not deleted; archived items remain findable in search and albums. |
| Remove a cloud copy but keep the Android device copy | Turn off backup on devices where the local photo should stay, then delete the cloud item on the web | Check the device copy afterward. Leave backup off if you do not want the photo uploaded again. |
| Remove all items found on an Android device from Google Photos while retaining them locally | Use Undo backup | This broad action includes device-folder and Locked Folder items currently found on the device, removes them from Photos, and turns backup off on that device. |
| Keep an independent copy | Download selected files or export the library | Verify the separate copy can be opened before deleting anything. |
Deleting is different from hiding—and can affect devices
Archive is the option when the aim is only to remove an item from the main gallery. Google says archived items remain discoverable through search and albums, and in device folders. Deleting is different: Google says deleted photos and videos remain in Trash for 30 days before permanent deletion, after which they cannot be restored. See Google’s computer deletion guidance.

- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required

Google also warns that deleting in Photos can remove an item from devices where Google Photos is installed and backup is on. The effects on a particular local file can depend on the platform and how it is stored, so follow the instructions for the device involved rather than assuming every local copy behaves identically.
To remove cloud copies while keeping Android files
Google’s Android guidance recommends turning off backup on devices where the local copy should remain, then deleting the backed-up items through Photos on the web. Allow time for the change and check that the local files remain on the device. If you do not want them uploaded again, keep backup off on those devices. Follow the steps in Google’s Android backup instructions carefully.

Understand Undo backup before using it
Undo backup is not a selective cleanup. On Android, it removes from Google Photos all photos and videos currently found on that device while leaving those files on the device, and it turns backup off on that device. Google says the action includes device-folder and Locked Folder items. Items removed this way also leave albums, shared albums, search results, and memories in Photos. Make and verify an independent copy first, then review Google’s Android deletion and backup guidance before proceeding.
Check Locked Folder backup separately
Locked Folder has its own backup setting. Its contents are excluded from the usual grid, memories, search, and albums. Automatic Locked Folder backup depends on main backup being on, and items can also be backed up manually. A Locked Folder item without backup exists only on that device; it can be lost if Photos is uninstalled, app data is cleared, or the device is lost or damaged. Google’s Locked Folder guidance also notes that moving an item moves the original only: copies and edited versions may remain elsewhere.

Desktop backup changes after August 10, 2026
Google’s computer backup help states that Google Drive for desktop ended support for Google Photos backup on August 10, 2026. Stopping folder backup prevents future uploads but leaves existing items in Google Photos; those items must be removed separately at photos.google.com if that is the goal. See Google’s computer backup help.
