Choose Ente Photos if end-to-end encryption is your priority and you want a managed service; choose Immich if you want a Google Photos-style library on your own server and can handle maintenance; choose Apple Photos for an Apple household; Amazon Photos for eligible Prime members who mainly need photo capacity; Proton Drive or OneDrive when you already live in those ecosystems. What makes a good Google Photos alternative in 2026?
A replacement has to solve more than cloud storage. Your decision affects how photos are uploaded from phones, how quickly you can find a face or place, whether albums remain usable, how sharing works, who can decrypt the files, and what happens if a subscription ends or an account becomes inactive.

Compare services on five dimensions:
- Storage and total cost: free allowances, recurring fees, video limits and whether storage is shared with other applications.
- Privacy model: encryption in transit and at rest is different from end-to-end encryption (E2EE), where the provider should not be able to read your library.
- Photo tools: search, face grouping, memories, editing, albums, shared libraries and collaborative workflows.
- Ecosystem fit: native behavior on your phone, computer and other services you already pay for.
- Responsibility and recovery: who installs updates, expands storage, monitors security and restores a damaged library.
Features, prices, eligibility and privacy controls can vary by country, device, account and date. Treat the figures below as the published terms available in 2026, not a guarantee that every user will see the same offer.

The comparative descriptions in this table come from Ente’s vendor-published comparison, so treat evaluations such as “more basic” as that publisher’s characterization rather than an independent benchmark: Ente’s comparison of Google Photos alternatives.
#1 Best Overall
- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
Best managed privacy option: Ente Photos
Ente is the clearest fit when your first requirement is a managed service with end-to-end encryption enabled by default. The service is built around photo backup rather than treating images as an incidental file type. The comparison page lists a 10 GB free tier, which can be enough for a modest phone library but may be quickly consumed by long videos or years of full-resolution images.
Why choose it
- Encryption is presented as the default rather than an optional setting.
- The app is photo-specific, so backup, albums and browsing are central workflows.
- You avoid operating a server, patching a database or arranging network access.
What to check first
- Measure your existing library, including videos, before selecting a paid tier.
- Confirm how the current plan handles video size, shared albums and exports in your region.
- Expect a different balance of discovery and editing tools: Ente’s comparison says Google remains stronger for advanced AI editing.
Encryption claims here are vendor-published descriptions, not a substitute for reading the current technical documentation or an independent audit report.
Best self-hosted option: Immich
Immich is for readers who want control over where the library lives and are comfortable treating photo management as a small infrastructure project. You can run it on a NAS or home server and keep the data under your control, but “self-hosted” does not automatically mean safer. The owner is also the administrator, backup operator and incident responder.
Responsibilities you take on
- Install the application and its supporting services.
- Apply updates promptly and test that upgrades do not break uploads or indexing.
- Provide enough disk capacity for originals, derivatives and future growth.
- Protect the server with strong accounts, network controls and secure remote access.
- Maintain at least one separate backup and periodically test a restoration.
- Plan recovery for drive failure, accidental deletion, ransomware or a lost device.
When Immich makes sense
Choose it when you already maintain a server, understand storage redundancy and want the flexibility to decide where data is stored. Avoid it if you want a “set and forget” phone backup. A self-hosted library can be unavailable while you are away from home or during an update unless you have designed for that situation.
Best for Apple households: Apple Photos and iCloud
Apple Photos is the natural choice when most of your household uses Apple phones, tablets and computers. Native integration simplifies camera uploads, editing, library synchronization and sharing without adding another account or app to every device.
Rank #2
- Ultra fast data transfers: the external hard drive works with USB 3.0 thickened copper cable to provide super fast transfer speeds. Theoretical read speed is as high as 110MB/s-133MB/s and write speed is as high as 103MB/s.
- Ultra-thin and quiet: the motherboard adopts a noise-free solution, giving you a quiet working environment. Lightweight and portable size designed to fit in your pocket for easy portability.
- Compatibility: compatible with PS4/xbox one/Windows/Linux/Mac/Android,Stable and fast downloading on game console no difference from fast transmission when using on PC.
- Plug and Play: no software to install, just plug it in and the drive is ready to use. The hard drive chip is wrapped with aluminum anti-interference layer to increase heat dissipation and protect data
- Package Contents: 1* portable hard drive, 1 *USB 3.0 cable, 1*USB to type C adapter,1 *user manual, shell packaging, three-year manufacturer's warranty and free technical support services
Privacy settings that matter
The comparison describes Apple Advanced Data Protection as optional. You must enable that setting to obtain the described end-to-end encryption benefit for eligible iCloud data. Shared Albums have a different protection status, so do not assume that every sharing workflow receives the same treatment. Record your recovery contacts or recovery key before enabling stronger protection; losing account-recovery methods can make encrypted data inaccessible.
Who should look elsewhere
If your household mixes platforms or your main computer is outside Apple’s ecosystem, verify the browser and Windows experience before moving a large library. Also check how your existing album structure, edits and shared items transfer; no destination should be assumed to preserve every field identically.
Best included capacity for eligible Prime members: Amazon Photos
The cited comparison says eligible Prime members receive unlimited photo storage, while video capacity is separate. That can make Amazon Photos attractive when your library is photo-heavy and you already maintain an eligible membership.
Questions to answer before relying on it
- Does your membership and country qualify for the current benefit?
- What is the present video allowance and what happens to videos if eligibility ends?
- Which original-resolution, RAW and metadata formats are supported?
- How will you export the library if you cancel?
The comparison characterizes Amazon Photos as not E2EE. It may still use encryption in transit and at rest, but those protections are not equivalent to a provider-blind end-to-end model.
Best for existing Proton users: Proton Drive
Proton Drive fits people who already use Proton services and want encrypted file backup and sharing in the same account. Its strength is ecosystem consistency and a privacy-oriented model, not a deep set of photo-specific discovery tools.

The comparison describes photo discovery and management as more basic than dedicated photo applications. Test the workflows you use most—automatic camera upload, searching by date or place, album sharing and browsing on a television or desktop—before moving your only copy.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteBest for Microsoft 365 users: OneDrive
OneDrive is convenient when camera uploads should sit beside documents and other Microsoft 365 files. A single account can reduce friction for families already working in that ecosystem, and a general file service may be preferable if photos are only one part of a broader archive.
It is not a photo-first service in the comparison, and it is described as not E2EE by default. Confirm the current storage included with your subscription, the behavior of camera upload on each mobile platform and how albums and edits are represented after import.
Where pCloud fits
pCloud is worth considering if you want general file and photo storage and are specifically interested in a lifetime-pricing model. The cited comparison does not establish current plan amounts, so check the live offer rather than treating “lifetime” as a fixed specification.
The comparison also describes it as less photo-focused and says zero-knowledge encryption is a paid add-on. That means you should price the storage and the privacy feature together, then verify how encrypted files can be searched, previewed, shared and recovered.

Google Photos baseline: what you are replacing
Google’s official help page says each account has up to 15 GB shared across Google Photos, Gmail and Google Drive. On the US page accessed in 2026, Google One is listed at $1.99 per month for 100 GB. Both figures are geography- and date-specific; local plans can differ.
Google notes that some older Pixel devices have different storage treatment. It also says certain High quality or Express quality backups made before June 1, 2021 do not count toward the quota. Check your account’s storage breakdown instead of estimating from the number of visible photos.
Google’s product page says Photos content is encrypted in transit and at rest and that photos and videos are not used for advertising. Those are Google’s own statements about its service; they do not, by themselves, establish every privacy property a reader may require. Google also provides ways to delete or export content.
Read the current storage and activity policy here: Google Photos Help: About your Google Photos activity and storage. Google’s feature and security descriptions are on its product page: Google Photos: Edit, Organize, Search, and Backup Your Photos.

Google account inactivity can affect your archive
Google’s help page says photos and videos may be deleted after two or more years of not using Google Photos. Google says it will email you at least three months beforehand and give you a chance to keep the library active by using Photos again. The same page warns that if an account remains out of storage for two years, Photos content might be deleted.

How to move your library without losing memories
Migration is safer as a copy-first process. Do not delete the original library merely because an import appears to have completed.
- Inventory the source. Note the approximate photo and video count, largest videos, RAW files, albums, shared items and any edited versions that matter. Check the account’s storage page for the actual total.
- Create an export. Use Google Takeout or the appropriate Google download route to obtain a local copy. Keep the downloaded files unchanged until verification is complete.
- Prepare the destination. Create the account, enable the intended privacy controls, install the mobile app and confirm that you have enough capacity for originals plus future uploads.
- Import a copy. Start with a representative batch containing recent photos, old scans, videos, screenshots, edited images and several albums. Large imports can take time; keep the source available.
- Verify media. Compare counts where the destination exposes them. Open samples across years and formats, play long videos, inspect capture dates, check rotation and confirm that albums and shared links behave as expected.
- Check metadata and edits. Look for location, camera information, descriptions, favorites and edited-versus-original relationships. Services may map these fields differently.
- Repeat for the full library. Import the remaining files only after the sample behaves acceptably. Keep a log of batches if the collection is large.
- Retain the source temporarily. Leave Google Photos intact until you have completed verification and can restore from your local export. The comparison explicitly advises confirming the import before deleting the source.
- Make an independent local copy. An external USB hard drive can hold an archive, but capacity must match your library and one drive alone is not a complete backup strategy.
- Delete only with a recovery plan. If you eventually remove the old library, keep the export and document how to open it. Confirm the destination’s cancellation and deletion policies first.
Album names, dates, faces, locations and edits are not guaranteed to transfer identically between services. Verification—not a progress bar—is the point at which you can safely make a deletion decision.

Encryption in transit and at rest
Encryption in transit protects data moving between your device and the provider. Encryption at rest protects stored data on the provider’s systems. These controls reduce exposure to interception and some forms of unauthorized access, but the provider may still be able to process files depending on its design and keys.
End-to-end or zero-knowledge encryption
With an end-to-end or zero-knowledge design, encryption keys are intended to remain under user control so the provider cannot routinely read the content. Recovery, search, previews and sharing can become more complex. A service’s marketing description is not an independent audit; read its technical documentation and understand what happens when you lose a password or recovery key.
Shared libraries and albums
Sharing often changes the protection model. A private library may have one set of controls while shared albums, links, thumbnails or collaborative spaces use another. Check each service’s documentation for the exact sharing feature you plan to use.
Decision guide
- Pick Ente if managed operation and default E2EE outweigh a smaller free allowance and potentially less advanced AI editing.
- Pick Immich if you already run a reliable NAS or server and accept full responsibility for maintenance and recovery.
- Pick Apple Photos if nearly everyone who needs the library uses Apple devices and you are willing to configure Advanced Data Protection deliberately.
- Pick Amazon Photos if you are an eligible Prime member, your collection is mainly photos and you have confirmed the separate video terms.
- Pick Proton Drive if you already use Proton and prefer ecosystem consistency over specialized photo discovery.
- Pick OneDrive if Microsoft 365 integration and camera uploads beside work files are more valuable than a photo-first interface.
- Pick pCloud if a lifetime-style general storage plan appeals to you and you have priced its optional zero-knowledge encryption.
Protect the new library after migration
- Turn on multi-factor authentication for the account.
- Store recovery codes offline and make sure another trusted person can access them if the archive is shared.
- Enable automatic mobile backup only after confirming the destination account and upload quality.
- Keep at least one copy that is independent of the provider and the phone that captured the images.
- Test a small restore every few months: download originals, open videos and check that dates and metadata remain usable.
- Review inactive-account, cancellation and deletion policies once a year.
The safest choice is therefore the one whose ongoing cost, privacy model and maintenance burden you will actually sustain. A service with excellent features is not a backup if you cannot recover the account or restore the files.
