To rearrange photos in a Google Photos album, open its editing controls and drag items into the order you want. You can also choose one of Google Photos’ automatic sorts: Newest, Oldest, or Recently added. The steps differ slightly between a computer, Android, and iPhone or iPad.
Choose manual order or an automatic sort
Manual ordering lets you place photos, videos, text, and locations wherever you want by dragging them. Google’s album instructions describe this as reordering items by dragging.

If you prefer an automatic order, the available choices are:
Recommended Free Tools
- Newest: Orders items by date, newest first.
- Oldest: Orders items by date, oldest first.
- Recently added: Orders items by when they were added to the album, not necessarily when the photo was taken.
These labels are documented for desktop, Android, and iPhone or iPad, though the control may be called Sort or Sort by depending on the platform.

If the album has no edit option
Check who created the album. According to Google Photos’ sharing guidance, only the creator can make changes to an album. A collaborator who did not create it can add photos and videos, but cannot make the documented album changes. If you need to reorder it, ask the creator to do so.
Removing a photo is not the same as deleting it
If you remove an item from an album while correcting its contents, it remains in your Google Photos library unless you separately delete it from the main Photos section. Google explains this distinction in its album help.

Two settings that can be easy to confuse
Album cover
Changing the album cover changes the image that represents the album; it does not change the sequence of items inside it. Google documents a separate Use as album cover control in its album instructions.
Very large albums
Google says an album can contain up to 20,000 photos or videos and notes that some features might not be available in very large albums. Its album guidance does not identify which features are affected, so it does not establish that reordering stops working at a particular album size.
