Neither Google News traffic nor direct traffic is automatically more valuable. Google News can bring reach and new readers; direct visits may include people who return intentionally. But a source label alone does not prove loyalty, revenue, or conversion. Compare both channels using your own revenue, reader outcomes, and engagement data over the same period.
What counts as Google News traffic and direct traffic?
Google says visits referred from the Google News app and browsers can carry the referrer news.google.com or news.url.google.com. Publishers can use on-page analytics to examine that traffic and Google News performance reports in Search Console for additional context. See Google’s instructions for measuring Google News impact.

Direct is an analytics source label, not a verified description of a reader’s intentions or identity. Treat it as a channel to measure, but test whether its visitors return, become known readers, or convert instead of assuming they are loyal simply because the visit is classified as direct.

Choose according to the outcome your publication needs. A source that sends more visits may be useful for reach, while another may generate more revenue or repeat readership. There is no established universal per-visit revenue benchmark comparing Google News with direct traffic; the result depends on the publisher’s audience, business model, and measurement.
#1 Best Overall
| Publisher goal | Compare for each source |
|---|---|
| Reach | Visits or users over the same date range |
| Advertising and reader revenue | Revenue per visit or user, plus subscription and contribution conversions |
| Engagement and relationship | Visits per user, pages per user, return rate, known-reader share, and newsletter sign-ups |
| Traffic quality | Referrer patterns, geography, unusual spikes, engagement, and finalized earnings |
This approach follows Google’s guidance to assess traffic sources, reader segments, and conversion rates rather than judging a channel by volume alone. Google News Consumer Insights recommends focusing on sources that bring the most traffic or revenue, while its Reader Revenue playbook advises checking conversion rates across channels: News Consumer Insights and Reader Revenue.
How to compare them fairly
- Separate the channels. Identify Google News referrals using
news.google.comandnews.url.google.com. Where your analytics setup allows, distinguish Google News from Google Search and other sources. - Use matching measurement rules. Compare both sources over the same date range and with the same attribution conventions. Do not compare one channel’s sessions with another’s users or conversions.
- Connect visits to outcomes. Report source-level revenue and reader outcomes, including ad revenue, subscriptions, contributions, and newsletter sign-ups, using consistent attribution.
- Test whether direct means repeat readership. Examine return visits, known-reader share, and conversion behavior. The direct label by itself does not establish that a person is a regular reader.
- Check for suspicious traffic. Review unusual source changes, referrer patterns, geography, engagement, and finalized earnings before treating a traffic spike as valuable.
Use repeat readership as a signal, not a guarantee
Google News Consumer Insights defines Casual Readers as those with one visit in a 30-day period, Loyal Readers as those with 2–14 visits, and Brand Lovers as those with 15 or more. Google says its Loyal Readers and Brand Lovers account for about 20% of a publisher’s audience and 80% of pageviews. These are Google’s guidance figures, not universal findings or proof that a particular traffic source caused loyalty. Use repeat-visit patterns to assess your own audience.

Why Google’s click-value figures do not settle the comparison
Google reports that a PwC study of 218 publishers in 38 countries estimated an average value per click of US$0.06–US$0.08, and US$0.13–US$0.15 for regional and local publishers. Google’s description combines clicks from Google Search and Google News; it does not give a separate Google News figure or compare either source with direct traffic. The study year is not stated on Google’s page, so these figures are not a current universal benchmark. Google’s page about its support for the news industry also describes Reader Revenue Manager results, but those claims do not establish that one traffic source converts better.
Watch for traffic that looks valuable but is not
Google warns that some third-party traffic providers may send artificial visits or clicks, potentially distorting analytics and ad earnings. Investigate unexpected traffic changes rather than assuming they represent genuine readers, and compare estimated with finalized earnings. See Google Ads Traffic Quality’s publisher resources.
