Google Messages vs. Samsung Messages: Spam Protection and Promotional Texts

Google Messages has the more fully documented toolkit for promotional business texts: automatic spam detection, user reporting, and an unsubscribe control for eligible senders. Samsung Messages documents manual number blocking, while Samsung also describes stronger malicious-message filters on some Galaxy phones in South Korea. Neither app can be declared the more accurate because no head-to-head detection study is available. Features depend on your country, Galaxy model, Android version, app version, message type, and carrier. In the United States, Samsung’s messaging-app status changed in 2026, so check the current in-app notice before relying on Samsung Messages.

Google Messages and Samsung Messages do different jobs

Spam protection is not one switch. It combines three separate actions:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Automatic filtering: the app detects likely junk or malicious messages and moves them away from the main inbox.
  • Blocking and reporting: you stop a sender and optionally tell the app or carrier that the conversation is spam.
  • Unsubscribing: you ask an eligible business sender to stop non-essential messages without necessarily blocking the sender.

Google documents all three categories, although availability is restricted by region, channel, sender type, and message type. Samsung’s U.S. support documentation focuses on blocking numbers. Samsung Korea documents additional malicious-message and intelligence-based filters for some supported Galaxy devices, but that regional feature is not evidence that every Samsung Messages installation has the same controls.

Capability Google Messages Samsung Messages What it means
Automatic filtering On-device machine-learning detection and checks of message URLs, where available. Blocking and spam controls are documented in U.S. support; Samsung Korea describes extra filters on supported devices. Availability varies by device, software and country. No reliable catch-rate comparison is established.
Manual blocking Reporting a conversation blocks the sender; blocking without reporting is also possible. U.S. instructions provide a Block numbers and spam menu. Both apps can stop a known sender, but menu names differ.
Spam reporting Moves the thread to Spam & blocked and can share recent messages and identifiers with Google and, in some flows, the carrier. Reviewed U.S. material establishes blocking rather than an equivalent Google-style reporting explanation. Read the data-sharing prompt before submitting a report.
Promotional-message unsubscribe Available for eligible RCS for Business chats and certain U.S. SMS/MMS senders. Reviewed official material does not establish an equivalent business unsubscribe control. Unsubscribe and block are different outcomes.
Current U.S. availability Google Messages remains the documented alternative for affected Samsung users. Associated Press reported a U.S. discontinuation date in July 2026. Verify Samsung’s live notice or the message shown in your app.

How Google Messages detects and handles spam

Automatic protection is normally enabled

Google says spam protection is automatically turned on where the feature is available. You can disable it, but the setting may not appear on every phone or in every country. Google describes machine-learning models that can operate on the device and checks of URLs in messages against Google’s systems to identify malicious links. The documentation does not provide a universal detection percentage or promise that every unwanted message will be caught.

Google’s privacy explanation also distinguishes between message types. It says spam detection may ephemerally process unencrypted message content and use signals to improve spam-detection models. When RCS is enabled, Google says RCS chats are end-to-end encrypted. That statement should not be expanded to mean that every SMS or MMS conversation has RCS encryption, nor does it mean that all message content is uploaded for review.

Check the spam-protection setting

  1. Open Google Messages.
  2. Tap your profile photo or initials.
  3. Select Messages settings.
  4. Open Protection & safety.
  5. Tap Spam protection.
  6. Leave the switch on unless you have a specific reason to disable automated detection.

If the Spam protection option is missing, Google’s help page indicates that the feature is not available for that device, account, region, or configuration. Updating the app can help with ordinary version issues, but an update cannot override regional or carrier restrictions.

How to report spam in Google Messages

Reporting blocks the sender and moves the thread

In Google Messages, use the conversation’s spam-reporting command when you want both outcomes: the sender is blocked and the conversation is moved to Spam & blocked. Google’s instructions are available at Report spam in Google Messages.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reporting is optional. If you simply want to stop a sender and do not want to submit a report, use the blocking control instead. This distinction matters when a message is unwanted but not clearly abusive, or when you prefer not to share message details.

What a report can send

Google says a report may include the sender’s number and up to the last 10 incoming messages so its systems can improve detection. The submission can also contain timestamps and RCS identifiers. A separate spam-reporting conversation may send the number and the latest text to your carrier. Review the confirmation screen before completing the report, because reporting is not just a local move of the thread.

After reporting, look in Spam & blocked if you need to restore a legitimate conversation. A bank alert, delivery notice, appointment reminder, or two-factor code can be misclassified, so check that folder when an expected message disappears.

Stopping promotional business texts in Google Messages

Unsubscribe is narrower than blocking

Google’s unsubscribe control is designed for eligible business messages, not every marketing text. In an eligible conversation, open the conversation menu or the unsubscribe prompt and choose Unsubscribe. Google documents the feature for RCS for Business in the United States, Brazil, France, Germany, India, Mexico, Spain, and the United Kingdom. It also documents an SMS/MMS path in the United States for messages from short codes and alphanumeric senders. For that SMS flow, Google sends a STOP message to help process the request.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Eligibility depends on the sender, channel and country. A personal number, an unsupported business account, or a message type outside those documented categories may not show an unsubscribe option.

Essential messages can continue

Google says an unsubscribe request stops non-essential business messages while allowing some essential messages that you requested. A confirmation, service-status update, appointment change, security alert, or other requested communication may therefore arrive after you unsubscribe. The result is not a guarantee that every future message from that organization will disappear.

Unsubscribe does not block the sender

Google’s RCS business-chat guidance makes the distinction explicit: unsubscribing does not block future messages and does not remove the conversation from your inbox. If the sender continues with unwanted messages, use the block or report-spam action separately. The two commands solve different problems: unsubscribe communicates a preference to an eligible business, while blocking is a local sender-control measure and reporting can send information for detection.

How Samsung Messages blocks unwanted numbers

U.S. blocking path

Samsung’s U.S. support instructions use this route:

  1. Open Messages.
  2. Tap More options (the three-dot menu).
  3. Choose Settings.
  4. Tap Block numbers and spam.
  5. Select Block numbers, then add the number or choose a recent contact.

The exact labels and available controls can vary with Galaxy model, carrier firmware, Android release and the Messages version. Samsung’s troubleshooting page is Call and text messages blocking issues with Galaxy phone.

What this control does not establish

The U.S. material establishes a practical way to block numbers; it does not establish that every Samsung Messages installation has Google-style machine-learning detection, an equivalent business unsubscribe workflow, or the same reporting data-sharing behavior. If you need to stop one known sender, manual blocking is direct. If you want automated classification or an unsubscribe request to a supported business, verify what your particular app displays.

Samsung’s advanced filtering is regional

Samsung Korea’s support guidance, published February 28, 2025, describes two additional protections on some supported Galaxy devices: malicious-message blocking and an optional intelligence-based filter. The guidance says operating-system and device support determine whether the controls are present.

Samsung warns that the intelligence filter can classify a legitimate message incorrectly. Treat that warning as a reason to review filtered messages, especially when you rely on one-time passwords, medical notices, delivery updates or financial alerts. The Korean documentation is a regional example; it should not be presented as a universal Samsung Messages feature in the United States or elsewhere. See Samsung Korea’s malicious-message and intelligence spam-blocking guide for the documented scope.

The Korean page does not provide a directly comparable description of data processing, retention or message sharing. It therefore cannot support a claim that Samsung’s filtering is more private or less private than Google’s.

Important U.S. availability change in 2026

An Associated Press report published April 6, 2026 said Samsung’s U.S. end-of-service announcement set discontinuation of Samsung Messages for July 2026 and directed affected users to switch to Google Messages. The report described the change as U.S.-specific and said it did not apply outside the United States. Read the report at Associated Press: Samsung is discontinuing its texting app, tells impacted users to switch to Google Messages.

Because that date came from the AP report rather than the underlying Samsung announcement, check the current notice inside Samsung Messages, Samsung’s regional support site, or your carrier’s setup screen. A phone purchased in another country, a different firmware region, or a managed enterprise device may show a different status. Do not assume that a U.S. timeline applies worldwide.

Which app fits each spam problem?

You receive ordinary junk from changing numbers

Google Messages is the better-documented choice for automated screening because Google explains on-device machine-learning detection and URL checks. Keep spam protection enabled, then report clear spam so the sender is blocked and the thread is moved out of the inbox. Do not expect a perfect filter or a published catch rate.

You receive marketing from a recognizable business

Look first for Unsubscribe in Google Messages. It can be available for eligible RCS business chats and specified U.S. SMS/MMS sender types. If there is no unsubscribe control, the sender or message channel may not qualify; block or report the conversation if the messages remain unwanted.

You want a simple number blacklist

Samsung Messages provides a documented U.S. path to Block numbers, and Google Messages also supports blocking. Choose the app that is supported on your phone and by your carrier, then maintain the blocked-number list when senders rotate through new numbers.

You use a Galaxy phone outside the United States

Check your country-specific Samsung support page and the options actually shown in the app. The Korean intelligence filter and malicious-message controls cannot be assumed on a European, Indian, Brazilian or U.S. model. Google’s unsubscribe regions are also explicit rather than worldwide.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Privacy trade-offs to understand before reporting

Google provides the clearest public description of its spam-detection processing. Its documentation says some detection can run on the device, URLs may be sent to Google for malicious-link verification, and unencrypted message content may be processed ephemerally for spam detection. It separately states that RCS chats are end-to-end encrypted when RCS is enabled. Those statements describe different mechanisms and should not be collapsed into either Google reads every text or no message data ever leaves the phone.

A spam report has a broader disclosure than passive filtering: Google says the number and up to 10 recent incoming messages may be sent, with timestamps and RCS identifiers, and a separate reporting conversation may send the number and latest text to the carrier. Blocking without reporting avoids that report submission.

The Samsung sources reviewed here explain blocking and, in Korea, warn about false positives, but they do not give an equivalent account of what message content is processed or retained. That absence is not proof of a different privacy practice; it is simply a limit on what can be concluded from the published guidance.

Troubleshooting unwanted or missing messages

An expected message disappeared

  1. In Google Messages, open Spam & blocked and check whether the sender was classified incorrectly.
  2. Review your blocked-number list and remove the number if necessary.
  3. If you reported the conversation, remember that reporting also blocks the sender; unblock it before expecting new messages.
  4. For Samsung Messages, inspect the blocked list and any device-specific spam or malicious-message area available in your model’s settings.

The unsubscribe option is missing

  • Confirm that the conversation is from a supported business sender rather than a personal number.
  • Check whether the chat is using RCS or SMS/MMS, because Google’s documented eligibility differs by channel.
  • Confirm your country. The RCS for Business list and the U.S.-only SMS/MMS path are not global guarantees.
  • If the sender continues and the messages are unwanted, use block or report spam; unsubscribing is not itself a block.

Samsung’s controls do not match an online guide

  • Check the Galaxy model, Android version, carrier firmware and Messages version.
  • Look for a regional Samsung support page rather than assuming a Korean or U.S. menu applies to your phone.
  • Read the current in-app notice, especially in the United States after the reported July 2026 transition.

Practical decision

For promotional texts, Google Messages offers the clearest documented path: use the eligible Unsubscribe command for business messages, and use blocking or reporting when you need the sender stopped. For a known unwanted number, either app can provide a manual block, with Samsung’s U.S. path labeled Block numbers and spam. Samsung’s additional intelligence filtering is real but regional and device-dependent, so it is not a universal alternative to Google’s documented protections. Whichever app you use, verify the controls on your phone and check filtered folders for legitimate alerts.
