Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallShort answer: Google Messages has the more fully documented and actively expanded scam-protection system. It combines on-device machine-learning detection, suspicious-URL checks, scam warnings, automatic handling of suspected spam and user reporting. Samsung’s current United States guidance says Samsung Messages is discontinued and directs users to Google Messages, but it does not publish a comparable current technical specification for the legacy Samsung Messages filter.
That supports choosing Google Messages for documented protection and longer-term availability, not claiming a proven higher blocking accuracy. No controlled, public head-to-head test establishes that Google catches a larger percentage of scams than Samsung’s old filter.

What the comparison really means
“Spam filtering” and “scam protection” overlap, but they are not identical labels. Spam filtering generally identifies unwanted bulk messages. Scam protection adds signals for fraud, phishing, malicious links and deceptive conversations. Google’s current documentation explicitly includes both categories, while Samsung’s public US information now concentrates on ending support for Samsung Messages rather than explaining how its old filter classified messages.
The practical question is therefore not simply which switch blocks more texts. It is which app gives you a documented detection scope, clear actions when a message is suspicious, understandable privacy controls, feedback tools and a supported path forward on your phone.

What Google Messages documents today
Detection covers spam, scams and phishing
Google Messages Help states: “Spam protection identifies different types of spam, which includes harmful content like scams and phishing attempts.” When protection is available and enabled, machine-learning models running on the device look for known spam patterns. Google’s 2025 security material says Scam Detection covers conversational scams and is part of Spam Protection, so the system is not limited to obvious advertising blasts.
Google also describes checks for suspicious links. If a message contains a URL, Google may upload that URL to verify that it is not malicious. That is a separate operation from the on-device pattern analysis and is important when assessing the privacy trade-off.
Processing can happen without a data connection
Because the detection models operate on the phone, some analysis can work without a data connection. That does not mean every feature is offline: URL verification can involve an upload, and availability depends on the device, account, carrier, region and rollout. Treat offline operation as a capability of the on-device model, not a guarantee that every warning or update works while disconnected.

Google can warn, hide or stop delivery
Google Messages can take several actions when it considers a message suspicious:
- Show a warning that a message may be a scam.
- Move a suspected message to the Spam & blocked folder.
- Prevent suspected spam from reaching the normal conversation list or, in some cases, from being delivered.
- Allow you to report the conversation or reverse an incorrect classification.
Google’s October 2024 announcement says suspected scam texts can be moved automatically to the spam folder or trigger a warning, with processing performed on-device. The exact behavior can vary by rollout and message type, so a warning is not proof that a message is fraudulent and a message in the inbox is not proof that it is safe.
Reporting is part of the protection loop
Reporting is more than a deletion command. Google’s help guidance says that reporting a conversation as spam blocks the sender and moves the conversation to Spam & blocked. A report may send Google the spammer’s phone number and the last 10 incoming messages. Google describes reporting as anonymous, but the content and sender information still matter if you are deciding whether the feedback feature fits your privacy expectations.

What is known about Samsung Messages
The US app is being discontinued
Samsung’s current US end-of-service guidance says Samsung Messages has been discontinued and recommends moving to Google Messages for a consistent messaging experience. Samsung describes Google Messages as offering AI-powered scam detection and robust spam filters. The same notice says older devices running Android 11 or lower are not affected, while devices on One UI 9.0 or higher are scheduled to make Samsung Messages removable in fall 2026.
This is explicitly US-market guidance. Samsung Messages availability, support and retirement timing can differ in other countries, on carrier variants or on devices with different software versions. Check the support information for your region before treating the US schedule as a worldwide deadline.
The legacy filter is not technically documented to the same level
Samsung’s current public material does not provide a detailed, up-to-date explanation of how the legacy Samsung Messages filter scores text, checks links, distinguishes conversational scams or decides whether to drop a message. It also does not establish whether particular checks run on the device, in the cloud or through a carrier service.
That absence is not evidence that Samsung Messages never blocked scams. It means that a current reader cannot responsibly assign it the same documented feature set as Google Messages or claim that the two filters are identical. Independent testing would be required to rank their real-world accuracy, and the available official material does not provide such a test.
Google Messages and Samsung Messages side by side
| Comparison point | Google Messages | Samsung Messages |
|---|---|---|
| Documented detection scope | Known spam patterns, scams, phishing, suspicious URLs and conversational scam patterns are described in Google’s support and security material. | Current US public guidance does not publish an equivalent technical scope for the legacy filter. |
| Machine-learning processing | Google says models operate on the device; some detection can work without a data connection. | Current official US documentation does not state how the legacy filter’s models or rules are processed. |
| URL handling | A URL may be uploaded for maliciousness verification. | Current official US documentation does not state how links are checked. |
| Possible action | Warn, move to Spam & blocked, prevent suspected spam delivery and accept reports. | Current US guidance emphasizes migration and does not detail the legacy app’s present actions. |
| User feedback | Report spam blocks the sender and moves the conversation; Not spam can correct a false positive. | Current US material does not document a comparable feedback workflow for the legacy app. |
| Privacy description | On-device detection, possible URL uploads, ephemeral processing of some unencrypted content and end-to-end encryption for RCS chats when RCS encryption applies. | Current US material does not publish a comparable processing description for the legacy filter. |
| Long-term US availability | Actively supported and expanded in Google’s current documentation. | Discontinued in the US; One UI 9.0-or-higher devices are scheduled for removability in fall 2026, while Android 11-or-lower devices are stated to be unaffected. |
Does Google Messages actually block more scams?
There is no official, controlled accuracy comparison showing that Google Messages catches a higher percentage of scams than Samsung Messages. Google’s claim that it handles more than 5 million suspected scam calls and texts every month, reported in 2026, is an aggregate volume. It is not a catch rate, a false-positive rate or a head-to-head benchmark.

Google has the stronger documented position because it explains more of the system and continues to add scam-specific behavior. Documentation quality and active development are useful decision signals, but they are different from measured superiority. A message can evade either system, and a legitimate message can be misclassified by either system.
For a practical decision, give more weight to whether the app is supported on your device, whether its controls are visible, how you are comfortable with its data handling and whether you can recover a falsely blocked conversation. Those factors are established more clearly than an accuracy ranking.
Privacy: what Google’s design means
On-device analysis reduces, but does not eliminate, data movement
Google says machine-learning detection runs on the device and can function without a data connection. That limits the need to send the entire message to a remote service for every decision. However, Google also says it may ephemerally process unencrypted message contents for detection and model improvement, and it may upload a URL to verify that it is not malicious.

“On-device” should therefore be read as the primary location for the documented pattern models, not as a promise that no message-related data ever leaves the phone. The URL-checking and reporting paths are the clearest exceptions described by Google.
RCS encryption has a specific condition
RCS chats are end-to-end encrypted when RCS encryption applies. That qualification matters: encryption status depends on the conversation and service conditions, so it should not be generalized to every message in the app. SMS and MMS are not automatically covered by the same RCS end-to-end-encryption statement.
Reporting can share message context
A spam report may include the sender’s phone number and the last 10 incoming messages. Before reporting a sensitive conversation, consider whether that context is necessary. If the message is merely unwanted but not dangerous, you can delete or block it without sending a report; if it is a scam, reporting supplies feedback that can improve abuse detection and blocks the sender according to Google’s help instructions.

How to configure and use Google’s protection
Check the protection setting
- Open Google Messages.
- Open the Messages settings.
- Choose Protection & safety.
- Open Spam protection.
- Leave the protection enabled unless you have a specific reason to turn it off.
Google says Spam protection is turned on automatically when available. If the setting is missing, unavailable or behaves differently, feature availability may be limited by your device, account, carrier, region or staged rollout rather than by a mistake in the menu path.

- Do not tap a link, call a number in the message or send credentials simply because the message uses a familiar logo or urgent language.
- Verify the request through an independently opened official app or website, not through the contact details in the text.
- If the conversation is clearly fraudulent, use the report-spam control so the sender is blocked and the conversation is moved to Spam & blocked.
- If the warning is wrong, use the app’s Not spam control and continue the conversation only after verifying the sender.
Review the Spam & blocked folder
Google can hide suspected messages in Spam & blocked rather than displaying them with ordinary conversations. Check that folder when you are missing an expected one-time code, delivery notice or message from a new contact. Restore a legitimate conversation with Not spam; do not assume that every item in the folder is harmless to open.
Decide whether to report
Use reporting for messages that are unwanted, deceptive or dangerous and where contributing the sender number and recent incoming messages is acceptable to you. A report both blocks the sender and moves the conversation. For a simple mistake, use Not spam instead of repeatedly reporting the same legitimate thread.

Switch if documented protection and support are your priorities
For users in the United States, Samsung’s own current direction makes Google Messages the practical supported choice. Google documents scam, phishing, link and conversational-scam defenses, exposes a protection switch and provides report and recovery controls. That combination is more actionable than relying on an undocumented legacy filter.
Check your software version before changing anything
Samsung states that Android 11-or-lower devices are not affected by the US discontinuation notice. Devices on One UI 9.0 or higher are scheduled to make Samsung Messages removable in fall 2026. If your phone falls into either category, confirm the local support notice and the software version shown in your device settings before planning a migration.

- Confirm whether Samsung Messages is still supported for your device and region.
- Install or open Google Messages and follow the phone’s prompts to make it the default messaging app if you choose to migrate.
- Open Messages settings and verify Protection & safety > Spam protection.
- Review the Spam & blocked folder after the change so you know where suspected messages will appear.
- Tell important contacts to use your current number and verify that expected authentication or service messages arrive.
- Keep the old app available temporarily if your device permits it, until you have confirmed that essential conversations and notifications work as expected.
The exact migration prompts can vary by Android version, carrier and region. The security controls, rather than a particular prompt sequence, are the reason to make the change.

When staying with Samsung Messages may still make sense
Outside the United States, Samsung Messages may remain available under local support terms. On an older Android 11-or-lower device covered by Samsung’s stated exception, changing apps solely because of the US retirement notice may not be urgent. You might also have workflow or accessibility reasons to keep the app temporarily.
Those are availability decisions, not evidence that Samsung’s filter is as capable as Google’s. If you stay, treat unfamiliar links, payment requests and urgent account warnings as dangerous even when the message reaches your inbox, because the public documentation does not establish the legacy filter’s coverage or accuracy.
Important availability and behavior caveats
- Country: Samsung’s discontinuation statement is US-specific. Do not apply the fall 2026 removal schedule to every market.
- Device and software: Android version, One UI release, carrier firmware and manufacturer rollout can change which app is present and which controls appear.
- Account and rollout: Google says protection is automatic when available; staged availability can produce different menus on otherwise similar phones.
- RCS status: RCS encryption applies only when the relevant RCS conditions are met. It is not a blanket description of SMS, MMS or every conversation.
- False positives: Filtering is probabilistic. Keep an eye on Spam & blocked when a legitimate sender is missing.
- Accuracy claims: Neither Google’s monthly volume figure nor Samsung’s retirement notice supplies a catch-rate comparison.
A decision checklist
Choose Google Messages when most of these statements are true:
- You want a currently supported app in the United States.
- You value documented scam, phishing, link and conversational-scam detection.
- You want a visible Spam protection switch and a Not spam recovery action.
- You accept that URL verification and spam reports can involve data leaving the phone.
- You want Google’s current security updates and feature expansion rather than an undocumented legacy filter.
Keep Samsung Messages temporarily when these conditions apply:
- You are outside the United States and local Samsung support still lists it as available.
- Your device is covered by Samsung’s stated Android 11-or-lower exception.
- You have a specific workflow dependency and can independently verify suspicious messages.
In either case, treat the app as a risk-reduction layer, not a guarantee. Never provide passwords, payment details or verification codes in response to an unexpected text, and verify high-impact requests through a trusted channel.
Bottom line
Google Messages is the better-documented choice for scam protection and the direction Samsung gives US users as Samsung Messages is discontinued. Its on-device detection, URL checks, scam warnings, Spam & blocked handling and report/Not spam controls form a clearly described protection stack. Samsung’s legacy filter may have blocked unwanted messages, but current official US material does not specify how it works or establish comparable performance. Switch for documented capability and support—not because an official test has proved a higher catch rate.
