Google Messages RCS vs SMS: What Changes and When to Use Each

RCS is Google Messages’ internet-based messaging service; SMS and MMS use your mobile carrier. When everyone in a conversation supports and enables RCS, you can get typing indicators, read receipts, higher-resolution media, richer group chats and, in qualifying Google Messages conversations, end-to-end encryption. If RCS is unavailable, Google Messages can fall back to SMS or MMS. The compose bar and send icon show which method a message is about to use.

The practical choice is therefore not usually a permanent “RCS or SMS” preference. It depends on the recipient, carrier, region, device support and the status shown in the conversation. This guide explains those differences, the security limits, possible costs and how to check or change RCS in Google Messages.

RCS and SMS/MMS use different delivery networks

Rich Communication Services (RCS) is an internet messaging path inside Google Messages. Messages travel over Wi-Fi or mobile data through an RCS service provider. The provider may be Google or a participating mobile carrier, and availability varies by country, carrier and device support.

SMS (Short Message Service) and MMS (Multimedia Messaging Service) are carrier services. Texts and media are handed to the mobile network rather than sent through an internet messaging service. Google says that enabling RCS does not change how SMS or MMS delivery works.

Both paths can appear in the same Google Messages app and the same conversation. The app selects the available path for each send. If the conversation cannot use RCS, the message can be sent as SMS or MMS instead.

RCS vs SMS/MMS at a glance

Reader concern RCS in Google Messages SMS/MMS in Google Messages
Transport Wi-Fi or mobile data through an RCS service provider. Mobile-carrier delivery.
Typing indicators Supported when enabled for the RCS conversation. Not available.
Read receipts Supported when enabled by the relevant participants. Not available in Google Messages’ SMS/MMS path.
Media and files Can send higher-resolution photos and videos and support file sharing, subject to service limits. Uses normal SMS/MMS behavior, including carrier and MMS limitations.
Group chats Can provide richer group-chat functions when all required participants and services support RCS. Uses carrier group-MMS behavior when RCS is unavailable.
Delivery indicators Google Messages can show sent, delivered and read states. Those RCS status icons do not appear for SMS/MMS messages.
End-to-end encryption Automatically applied only to qualifying conversations between Google Messages users with RCS enabled for everyone. Not end-to-end encrypted.
Connection cost Uses Wi-Fi or mobile data. Google says an unpaid Wi-Fi connection adds no messaging charge; mobile-data use follows your data plan. Any charge depends on your carrier plan; Google’s support pages do not set a universal SMS or MMS price.

How Google Messages decides which method to use

RCS must be available to the relevant participants, enabled in their apps and supported by the devices and service providers involved. A single contact may therefore use RCS in one conversation and SMS in another, and a group may lose RCS if a participant or service cannot support it.

Read the compose-bar label

Before you type, look at the compose bar. Google Messages uses “RCS message” when it expects to send through RCS. When it is preparing carrier messaging, it shows “Text message”; an SMS or MMS label may also appear below the send icon. The wording can vary slightly by app version or language, but the label is the clearest indication of the intended route.

Read the send icon

The send control can indicate whether the message will use Wi-Fi or mobile data, SMS or MMS. Check it immediately before sending a large video or a message to a new group. If the icon and compose-bar text indicate SMS or MMS, do not assume that an RCS-only feature such as read status or high-resolution media will be available.

What happens when RCS is unavailable

Google Messages can send the message as SMS or MMS when RCS is not available. Depending on your settings and the failure condition, the app may offer resend choices. One documented option is “SMS with a link.” That option can make media accessible through a public link that is not controlled by Google, so review the prompt before selecting it for private content.

Android-to-iPhone conversations

Google’s RCS FAQ says RCS is now available for texting between Android and iPhones, but it qualifies that statement: iPhone availability depends on country or region and carrier support. Do not treat every Android-to-iPhone thread as an RCS thread. Confirm the compose-bar label and send icon for the specific conversation.

What features you gain with RCS

Typing and read status

RCS can show when the other person is typing and can provide sent, delivered and read indicators. These are conversation-level features, not guarantees that a person has seen or is responding to a message. Read receipts must be enabled by the recipient for you to see that a message was read, and either participant can change the relevant setting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Higher-resolution media and files

RCS supports higher-resolution photos and videos than the traditional MMS path and can support richer file sharing. The actual result still depends on the service, app version, connection and any size limits imposed by the provider. If Google Messages identifies the send as MMS, expect carrier behavior rather than RCS media handling.

Richer groups

RCS group chats can offer more capable participation and media features than carrier group MMS. The group needs compatible participants and RCS service support. A group that includes an unsupported participant may use SMS/MMS behavior instead, so check the conversation label rather than relying on the group name.

Privacy and encryption: the boundaries matter

When personal RCS is end-to-end encrypted

Google states that RCS conversations between Google Messages users are automatically upgraded to end-to-end encryption when all participants use Google Messages with RCS enabled. In an eligible conversation, a lock on the send button indicates end-to-end encryption. Encryption protects message content while it travels between the participants’ devices; it does not turn every Google Messages conversation into an encrypted conversation.

When encryption is not available

SMS and MMS are not end-to-end encrypted. Google also says that RCS chats provided through Google use TLS when end-to-end encryption is unavailable. TLS is transport encryption, not end-to-end encryption: it protects the connection to the service but does not carry the same device-to-device guarantee. Do not infer end-to-end protection from an RCS label alone; look for the lock and confirm that every participant meets the Google Messages requirement.

Android-to-iPhone encryption limitation

Google’s FAQ says RCS chats with iPhone users do not have end-to-end encryption in Google Messages. Thus an Android-to-iPhone conversation may use RCS features while lacking the encryption available in a qualifying Google Messages-to-Google Messages chat. Treat the platform combination as a separate security case.

Business RCS is different

Verified RCS business conversations are not end-to-end encrypted, according to Google. Businesses, messaging solution providers and carriers may access message content for delivery and related purposes. Do not apply the personal-chat encryption statement to a verified business thread, even if the interface displays RCS features.

Service data used to keep RCS connected

Google’s security documentation says a phone number, device identifiers and SIM card number may be stored for about a month to keep a user connected to RCS and to reconnect the service when the user temporarily goes offline. This is a retention statement in Google’s support documentation, not a measurement of message adoption or usage.

Data use and possible charges

RCS over Wi-Fi

When your phone is connected to Wi-Fi that does not require payment, Google says sending and receiving RCS messages has no additional messaging cost. The Wi-Fi service itself may still have its own subscription or access charge; the statement concerns the RCS message transfer.

RCS over mobile data

Without Wi-Fi, RCS uses mobile data. The bytes count against the data allowance or billing rules of your mobile plan. Large photos, videos and files can consume more data than short text, particularly when the phone is not connected to Wi-Fi.

SMS and MMS billing

SMS and MMS use the carrier network. Google’s documentation does not establish a universal price, free allowance or international rate. Your carrier plan determines whether texts, picture messages, group messages or roaming activity incur charges, so check that plan before assuming SMS is free or cheaper than RCS.

When RCS is the better choice

  • You need delivery context. Typing, delivered and read indicators can help coordinate a time-sensitive conversation, provided the other person has the corresponding options enabled.
  • You are sharing media. RCS is preferable when retaining higher photo or video quality matters and the compose bar confirms an RCS send.
  • You are coordinating a compatible group. RCS can provide richer group behavior than carrier group MMS when every required participant and service supports it.
  • You want eligible personal-chat encryption. Use the lock indicator and verify that all participants are Google Messages users with RCS enabled. An RCS label without the lock is not enough.
  • You have Wi-Fi and want to avoid carrier messaging charges. RCS can use an unpaid Wi-Fi connection, while carrier billing rules still apply to SMS/MMS.

When SMS or MMS remains the practical choice

  • The recipient or group cannot use RCS. SMS/MMS reaches contacts whose devices, carriers or regions do not support RCS.
  • RCS is temporarily unavailable. A carrier outage, service problem, disabled setting or loss of registration can leave SMS/MMS as the available route.
  • You need broad compatibility. Carrier messaging remains the fallback for contacts outside the RCS ecosystem, though international and roaming charges depend on the plan.
  • You are sending a low-sensitivity message. SMS/MMS is not end-to-end encrypted, so do not use it for content that requires that protection.
  • The app explicitly shows “Text message.” That label tells you what Google Messages intends to send, regardless of what the conversation used previously.

How to turn on RCS and adjust its options

The exact menu name can differ by Google Messages version. Google’s current setup path is:

  1. Open Google Messages.
  2. Tap your profile icon.
  3. Choose Messages settings.
  4. Open RCS chats. On some versions this menu is called Chat features.
  5. Turn RCS on and follow any verification or registration prompts.
  6. Return to the same screen to review the connection status and the controls for read receipts and typing indicators.

If the app says RCS is disabled by the carrier or unavailable, check whether your device and carrier support it. Google directs users to contact the carrier when the service cannot be enabled. A compatible Android phone alone does not guarantee regional or carrier availability.

Read receipts and typing indicators

Within RCS settings, you can toggle read receipts and typing indicators. Turning off your own read receipts changes what others can see; it also means you should not expect to see a recipient’s read status simply because the conversation uses RCS. The recipient must enable read receipts for a read indication to appear to you.

Do not repeatedly switch RCS on and off

Google warns against repeatedly enabling and disabling RCS. Doing so can remove you from RCS group chats and create registration or message-delivery problems. If you have changed phones, SIMs or messaging apps, allow the service to complete its registration before changing the setting again.

Troubleshooting an unexpected SMS fallback

The compose bar says “Text message”

Check RCS status under Profile icon → Messages settings → RCS chats (or Chat features). If the setting is off, enable it and wait for registration. If it is unavailable or carrier-disabled, the issue requires device or carrier support rather than a message-level preference.

Only one contact uses SMS

RCS eligibility is evaluated per conversation. The contact may have RCS disabled, may be using an unsupported carrier or region, or may be temporarily offline from the service. Continue with SMS if the message is urgent, or ask the contact to check their RCS setting without repeatedly toggling your own account.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A group changed from RCS to MMS

Review the participants and the group’s compose-bar label. A participant without RCS support can cause the group to use carrier messaging. Existing groups can also be affected by account, device or service changes. Remember that switching RCS off and on can remove users from group chats.

An RCS send failed

Read the resend choices carefully. Resending as SMS or MMS uses the carrier path and loses RCS-only indicators and encryption. If “SMS with a link” is offered for media, the resulting public link may not be controlled by Google; avoid that option for confidential files or images.

You cannot see a read receipt

First confirm that the conversation is RCS and that the recipient has read receipts enabled. A missing receipt does not prove that the message was not delivered or read. SMS/MMS conversations do not provide the RCS read-status icons.

A simple decision process before sending

  1. Check the label. “RCS message” means the app intends to use RCS; “Text message” means carrier messaging.
  2. Check the lock when privacy matters. Only the lock indicates the qualifying Google Messages end-to-end encrypted state.
  3. Check the connection. RCS may use Wi-Fi or mobile data; large media can affect your data allowance.
  4. Check the recipient context. Android-to-iPhone availability depends on country, region and carrier, and those conversations are not end-to-end encrypted in Google Messages.
  5. Choose the fallback deliberately. If an RCS send fails, decide whether ordinary SMS/MMS is acceptable before resending, especially for private media.

What RCS does not change

Enabling RCS does not make every message internet-based, does not guarantee delivery to every phone and does not make SMS/MMS encrypted. It also does not set the price of carrier messaging or override a carrier’s regional support. Google Messages can continue to use SMS or MMS whenever the conversation, service or setting requires it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

RCS is best understood as an additional path with richer capabilities, not a replacement that eliminates carrier texting. Use the method shown by the app, verify the security indicator when necessary and keep your carrier’s billing and support rules in mind.
