RCS can show typing indicators and read receipts, deliver high-resolution media over Wi-Fi or mobile data, and support richer group chats. SMS is for text, while MMS carries multimedia. You are not choosing among three apps: Google Messages selects the mode for each conversation and shows the mode in the compose area.
The mode you get depends on the recipient’s support, whether RCS is enabled for every participant, your phone and carrier, regional availability, settings, and your data connection. This guide explains how to identify the mode, what changes for privacy and cost, and what to do when a chat falls back to SMS or MMS.

What is the difference between RCS and SMS?
Rich Communication Services (RCS) is the feature-rich chat protocol used by Google Messages when the conversation is eligible. It uses Wi-Fi or mobile data rather than the mobile operator’s traditional text channel. Google lists typing indicators, read receipts, file sharing, high-resolution photos and more capable group conversations as RCS features. Those features work only when all participants in the conversation have RCS turned on and their devices, carriers and regions support it. See Google’s RCS chats by Google FAQ for current eligibility details.
Short Message Service (SMS) is the operator-delivered text service. It is the broadest fallback because it does not require the recipient to use RCS. SMS does not provide RCS-only indicators such as typing status or read receipts, and it is not end-to-end encrypted. Carrier terms, including any applicable messaging charges, govern delivery.

Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS) is also delivered through the mobile operator, but it is intended for multimedia messages such as photos, videos, audio or group messages when the conversation is not using RCS. MMS likewise lacks RCS chat indicators and end-to-end encryption. Google’s security guidance explains that SMS and MMS are not end-to-end encrypted: How RCS chats keep your conversations secure.
Google Messages can use all three modes. The mode is a property of the conversation and the message being sent, not a separate version of the app.

Google says RCS over Wi-Fi does not incur an extra messaging charge when the Wi-Fi connection itself is free. When RCS uses mobile data, any data usage is governed by your plan. SMS and MMS remain subject to your carrier’s terms. No single worldwide price, character limit or media-size limit applies to every carrier, so check your plan rather than relying on a universal number.

Look at the compose bar before you tap Send. Google Messages identifies whether the message will travel over Wi-Fi or mobile data as RCS, or whether it will be sent as SMS or MMS. The wording and icon can vary slightly by app version and conversation type, but the send indicator is the practical answer for that specific message.
- An RCS indicator means the message will use Wi-Fi or mobile data.
- An SMS indicator means the message is text-only over the operator network.
- An MMS indicator means multimedia is being sent through the operator network.
- A lock beside the send button indicates an end-to-end encrypted conversation.
Adding a photo, video or other media can change a previously text-based fallback into MMS if RCS is unavailable. Google documents media sending behavior in Send photos, videos, or voice messages in Google Messages. The indicator shown immediately before sending is more reliable than assuming every message in a thread uses the same protocol.

What does RCS mean in Google Messages?
In Google Messages, RCS means the conversation has been upgraded from traditional carrier messaging to a connected chat session. It is still inside the same Messages app and uses the same thread, but it can exchange richer content and status information. Google lists high-resolution photos, file sharing, typing indicators and read receipts among the capabilities. Whether you see each feature depends on participant compatibility and privacy settings.
One-to-one conversations
In a one-to-one chat, both people need RCS enabled and supported for the conversation to remain RCS. If either person turns RCS off, changes to an unsupported carrier or device, or loses the required service, Google Messages can use SMS or MMS instead.

Group conversations
Group RCS requires every participant to meet the conversation’s RCS requirements. A single participant without RCS can cause the group to use an operator-delivered mode, removing RCS-only indicators and changing the privacy characteristics. Group behavior can also depend on carrier and regional support.
How to check and turn on RCS chats
Use Google Messages’ own status screen rather than guessing from a contact’s phone model. Google’s instructions are in Turn on RCS chats in Google Messages.
- Open Google Messages.
- Tap your profile picture or initial, then open Messages settings.
- Tap RCS chats. On some versions the menu may be labeled Chat features.
- Read the connection status. Google documents statuses including Connected, Connecting, Trouble connecting or Awaiting retry, and Not supported.
- If the status is Connected, return to the conversation and check the send indicator. If it is Not supported, confirm that your phone, SIM or eSIM, carrier and region offer RCS; a setting alone cannot add network support that is unavailable.
RCS registration can require a working phone number, a current Google Messages installation and network connectivity. If the status remains Connecting or Awaiting retry, keep the app updated, verify mobile data or Wi-Fi, and check whether the carrier supports RCS in your location. Do not assume that buying a new phone is necessary: a compatible Android smartphone you already own may be sufficient if the carrier and region support the service.

Why did my RCS message send as SMS?
An RCS message can fall back to SMS or MMS when the data path is unavailable or when the conversation no longer meets RCS requirements. Common causes include:
- The recipient has RCS turned off, is using an unsupported device or carrier, or has not completed RCS registration.
- A group includes a participant who cannot use RCS.
- Your phone has no working Wi-Fi or mobile-data connection.
- RCS is unavailable in the current region or temporarily has a service or registration problem.
- Your Messages settings allow automatic resend through SMS or MMS after an RCS attempt fails.
Google Messages can offer SMS/MMS resend behavior when a data message cannot be delivered. You can review the resend option under Messages settings → RCS chats and choose whether the app may automatically resend. The exact label can differ by version.
What changes when fallback occurs
Fallback is not merely a different delivery icon. SMS or MMS removes RCS typing indicators and read receipts, uses the operator network, and is not end-to-end encrypted. It can also use your carrier’s messaging allowance or incur a charge under the plan. If the message contains media, the fallback may be MMS rather than SMS.
Google warns that choosing an option such as SMS with a link can make the media available through a public link that Google does not control. Treat that option differently from an encrypted RCS attachment: anyone who obtains the link may be able to access the media while it remains available.
Does RCS use Wi-Fi or mobile data?
Yes. RCS uses an internet connection: Wi-Fi when available, or mobile data when the phone is connected to the cellular data network. A Wi-Fi-only connection can therefore carry an RCS message even when cellular voice service is weak, provided RCS registration and the recipient’s support remain valid. Mobile-data usage is governed by your data plan.

SMS and MMS use the mobile operator’s messaging systems instead. They can work when mobile data is disabled, although the phone must still have the operator service required for messaging. If you are traveling, roaming terms and regional availability can affect both RCS registration and carrier-delivered messaging.
Are RCS messages encrypted?
Some are, under specific conditions. Google says RCS chats between Google Messages users are automatically upgraded to end-to-end encryption when all participants use Google Messages with RCS turned on. An eligible conversation displays a lock icon by the send button. Google’s detailed explanation is in Use end-to-end encryption in Google Messages.
Do not treat the RCS label alone as proof of end-to-end encryption. Google states that RCS business conversations are not end-to-end encrypted; see RCS chats with businesses. Cross-platform conversations have additional qualifications, and SMS and MMS never gain end-to-end encryption merely because they were sent from Google Messages.
How to verify encryption before sending
- Open the conversation in Google Messages.
- Check that the send button shows a lock.
- If the lock is absent, do not assume the message is end-to-end encrypted. Confirm that every participant uses Google Messages with RCS enabled and that the conversation is not a business or unsupported cross-platform chat.
- If the app offers SMS or MMS resend, remember that accepting it changes the message to a non-end-to-end-encrypted channel.
Can Google Messages RCS work with iPhone?
Google supports basic cross-platform RCS features when the iPhone user, carrier and region support the required service. The experience is not identical to an eligible Google Messages-to-Google Messages chat, and support can change as carriers and operating systems implement features.
Google’s RCS FAQ says RCS chats with iPhone users do not have end-to-end encryption. Separately, Google announced in 2026 that end-to-end encrypted cross-platform RCS began rolling out in beta for iPhone users running iOS 26.5 with supported carriers and Android users on the latest Google Messages. That is a carrier-dependent, evolving rollout, not universal availability. Read the announcement at E2EE RCS Messaging Rolls Out for Android and iPhone Users, then check the current support shown on both devices.

If an Android-to-iPhone conversation lacks RCS support, Google Messages uses SMS for text and MMS for multimedia where the carrier supports it. The send indicator, not the phone brand, tells you which mode is being used at that moment.
What RCS changes for photos, files and groups
RCS is designed for richer content than traditional text messaging. Google lists high-resolution photos and file sharing, and its media instructions cover photos, videos and voice messages. Upload and download behavior still depends on the available connection, app settings and participant support.
When a recipient cannot receive RCS, Google Messages may send a photo or video as MMS, or offer an SMS containing a link. MMS follows the carrier’s handling and plan rules. An SMS link is not the same as an encrypted attachment and can expose the media to anyone who gets the public URL.
Recommended Free Tools
In group chats, RCS can provide more capable participation and status feedback, but only while all participants remain eligible. Adding someone without RCS support can change the group’s mode. Before sharing sensitive material in a mixed group, inspect the send indicator and lock status.
Troubleshooting RCS connection problems
Status says “Not supported”
- Confirm that the phone is an Android device running Google Messages and that the app is current.
- Check carrier and regional RCS availability. Google documents availability as dependent on device, carrier and location.
- Verify that the correct SIM or eSIM is active for the phone number used by Messages.
- If the network does not offer RCS, use SMS/MMS or another supported messaging service; changing an app toggle cannot create carrier support.
Status says “Connecting” or “Trouble connecting”
- Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data to rule out a local connection problem.
- Check that Messages is allowed to use mobile data and is not restricted by a data-saver or firewall setting.
- Install available Google Messages and Android updates, then reopen the RCS chats settings.
- Allow time for registration retry. If the problem persists, contact the carrier because activation and phone-number registration can be network-dependent.
Messages keep reverting to SMS or MMS
- Check the recipient’s RCS status and whether the conversation is a group with a non-RCS participant.
- Look at the send indicator before each message; a media attachment can switch a fallback from SMS to MMS.
- Review automatic resend settings. Disable automatic SMS/MMS resend if privacy or carrier charges matter more than immediate delivery.
- For sensitive content, wait for an RCS lock indicator instead of accepting a fallback.
Which mode should you use?
| Your situation | Practical choice | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Everyone in the chat has RCS and you have Wi-Fi or mobile data | Use RCS | You can use richer media, typing indicators and read receipts where settings permit, with end-to-end encryption when the lock indicator confirms an eligible chat. |
| The recipient does not support RCS | Use SMS for text or MMS for media | These are the available operator fallbacks, but they are not end-to-end encrypted. |
| RCS is temporarily offline | Wait for reconnection or deliberately resend | Automatic fallback may deliver sooner but changes privacy, network path and possible carrier charges. |
| You are messaging a business | Check the conversation’s lock status and terms | Google says RCS business conversations are not end-to-end encrypted. |
| You are chatting with an iPhone user | Check the current RCS and lock indicators | Cross-platform support and encryption depend on device, carrier and rollout status. |
The safest habit is simple: before sending anything sensitive, verify both the RCS indicator and the lock. If either is missing, treat the message as a carrier-delivered or otherwise non-end-to-end-encrypted communication.
