When Google Messages will not send or receive a text, identify the transport first: RCS uses Wi‑Fi or mobile data, while SMS and MMS use your carrier’s messaging service (MMS also needs mobile data). Start with the phone, SIM, app and plan checks below, then use the RCS status or the type of message that fails to narrow the cause.
Most failures come from a disabled connection, an incorrectly configured app or SIM, number verification, MMS data settings, or carrier support—not from a bad accessory. Work through the sections in order and stop when the failing message type works again.

Quickly identify what is failing

Complete the basic phone and app checks first
These checks apply before diagnosing RCS, SMS or MMS. They also prevent you from mistaking a mobile-service problem for an app problem.

Open the Play Store, search for Google Messages and install an available update. Menu names can vary slightly by Android version.
- Set Google Messages as the default texting app. In Android Settings, open the default-app or SMS-app setting and select Google Messages. A different app can otherwise receive incoming texts or intercept outgoing ones.
- Turn off Airplane mode. Check the quick settings panel and make sure Airplane mode is disabled. If you have just disabled it, wait for the cellular indicator to return.
- Check signal and service. Look for a usable cellular signal, then verify that your plan is active and that any prepaid balance or text allowance has not been exhausted. A phone can show Wi‑Fi while still lacking the carrier service needed for SMS.
- Reseat the SIM. Power the phone off, remove the SIM, check that it is the correct size and undamaged, seat it firmly in the tray and restart. For an eSIM, confirm that the line is enabled in the phone’s SIM settings instead of removing hardware.
- Confirm the carrier supports the message type. SMS, MMS and RCS availability can differ by carrier, device and region. If your carrier has suspended messaging or has not provisioned it on the line, app settings cannot repair that.
- Google Fi users: sign in to the Project Fi app as Google’s troubleshooting instructions request, then retry after the account finishes loading.
Send a short text to a known working number after these checks. If it still fails, note whether the send icon identifies the attempt as RCS, SMS or MMS; that label determines the next branch.

RCS, SMS and MMS are different transports

RCS is not a universal replacement for SMS. Support varies by device, carrier, region and the other people in the conversation. Google Messages can fall back to SMS or MMS when RCS is unavailable, but the resend behavior may need to be selected or configured. A recipient without RCS can therefore receive a conventional SMS or MMS instead of an RCS message.
Read the RCS chats status and fix the matching condition
In Google Messages, open the profile picture or account menu, choose Messages settings, then open RCS chats (the wording can vary by build). The status is a diagnostic clue, not merely an on/off switch.
“Connected”
Connected means this phone has completed RCS registration and can use RCS. If a particular conversation still fails, check that the other participants have RCS enabled and then investigate that contact or group rather than repeatedly changing the global RCS setting.
“Connecting”
Connecting generally means Google Messages is verifying the phone number. Keep the phone online, leave Google Messages updated and allow the verification process time to complete. Avoid repeatedly toggling RCS while it is working through registration.
“Trouble connecting. Awaiting retry”
First confirm that the phone can reach the internet over Wi‑Fi or mobile data and that the number can receive the verification needed for the line. Google’s instruction is: If this takes more than 30 minutes, tap Details and then Submit feedback.
Use that in-app feedback route when the status remains stuck beyond 30 minutes; do not treat the threshold as a guaranteed repair time.

“Not supported” or a carrier-disabled message
Not supported can mean the device, carrier or region does not offer RCS for that line. If Google Messages specifically reports that the carrier disabled RCS, contact the carrier. The carrier controls provisioning and may need to confirm eligibility or service status.
The other person does not have RCS
RCS requires support on the participants’ devices and accounts. A conversation can therefore use RCS with one contact and SMS or MMS with another. That difference is expected and does not by itself indicate a fault in your phone.
Understand fallback and the send icon before retrying
Google Messages displays a send icon that indicates whether the message will use Wi‑Fi or mobile data, SMS or MMS. Use that label to verify that the app is attempting the transport you expect. If RCS is unavailable, choose the available SMS or MMS resend option when appropriate instead of assuming the message is still waiting for RCS.
Media fallback needs extra care. Google warns that choosing SMS with a link for media can make the media accessible through a public link that Google does not control. Use that option only when you accept the exposure and understand that the recipient will receive a link rather than an MMS attachment.
RCS delivery and read indicators do not carry over to SMS or MMS. A conventional text may send successfully without showing the same status details that an RCS chat provides.

When ordinary SMS will not send or arrive
If both sending and receiving conventional texts fail, the problem is usually at the phone, SIM, account or carrier layer. After the basic checks, test whether calls work and whether another phone on the same carrier has service in the same location. If calls also fail, report a cellular-service or account issue to the carrier. If calls work but SMS does not, ask the carrier to verify that SMS is provisioned on the line and that no spending, fraud or parental-control block is active.
Keep Google Messages selected as the default SMS app while testing. If you recently installed or switched to another messaging application, temporarily remove its default-SMS role and restart Google Messages. Incoming SMS can be routed to only one default handler at a time.
Do not assume Wi‑Fi alone can send SMS. RCS can use Wi‑Fi, but ordinary SMS depends on the carrier’s cellular messaging service. A phone with strong Wi‑Fi and no usable mobile service may still be unable to send an SMS.
Fix MMS, photos and videos
Verify mobile data
MMS needs mobile-data connectivity even when the phone is connected to Wi‑Fi. Turn mobile data on, temporarily disable any data-saving mode that blocks Messages, and load a normal webpage over the mobile connection. If mobile data itself does not work, resolve the carrier or APN problem before retrying the picture message.
Reset APN settings
An incorrect access-point name (APN) can prevent MMS while SMS continues to work. In Android Settings, open the mobile-network or SIM settings, find Access point names, open the menu and choose Reset to default. The exact path differs by manufacturer. Restart the phone after the reset and allow the carrier’s default APN to repopulate; do not manually copy values from an unrelated carrier.

Choose the right group-messaging mode
In Google Messages settings, review Group messaging. Select Group MMS when replies should remain in one shared conversation. The mass-SMS option sends separate texts to each member, so replies can arrive as individual conversations instead of one group thread. Group MMS still requires mobile data and carrier MMS support.
Reduce the variables in a media test
After changing data or APN settings, send one small image to a single contact. A single-recipient test distinguishes an MMS configuration problem from a group-participant or file-size issue. Once that succeeds, test the group again.

Check the contact record
- Open the contact and verify every digit, including the country code for an international number.
- Check Google Messages’ blocked numbers list and unblock the person if necessary.
- Delete the contact, save it again with the corrected number and start a new conversation. This refreshes a stale address association.
If the person recently changed numbers, ask them to send you a new message so you can confirm which address their phone is using. Do not infer a network outage from a failure limited to one number.
RCS groups that split into separate texts
A temporary loss of an RCS connection can cause messages from an RCS group to split into individual SMS or MMS conversations. Google says the group can restore when the sender reconnects to RCS. Avoid deleting the group or repeatedly switching transports while the sender’s RCS registration is recovering; those actions can create additional threads.

Deregister iMessage after an iPhone-to-Android move
Apple’s iMessage registration can continue routing messages for your phone number after you move to Android. Deregister iMessage for that number using Apple’s deregistration process, then restart Google Messages and ask a contact to send a new SMS. This addresses messages that never reach the Android phone even though the carrier line is active.
Make one app responsible for texting
If you changed Android messaging apps and stopped receiving messages, set Google Messages as the default SMS app and remove the old app’s default role. A reboot after changing the default can clear a stale handoff. Keep the old app installed only if you need its local history or export; it should not remain the active handler during the test.
Do not toggle RCS as a routine reset
Google warns that turning RCS off and on is not advised because you can be removed from group chats. Use the status-specific checks first. Consider changing the setting only when Google’s instructions for your transition require it, and warn group participants that the conversation may be affected.
Dual-SIM phones: verify which line supplies data
On a dual-SIM device, the line used for calls and the line used for mobile data can be different. Google’s FAQ recommends configuring the call SIM as the data SIM when troubleshooting an RCS connection. In Android’s SIM manager, select the same line for calls and mobile data temporarily, then reopen RCS chats and allow registration to retry. If the two lines must remain separate, ask the carrier whether RCS is supported on the line currently assigned to data.

Do not promise that a carrier outage will be fixed on a particular schedule. Carrier status, regional availability and menu labels can change, so use the carrier’s current support information for a live outage or provisioning decision.
