Google Merchant Center vs. Store Crawling: Which Product Update Method Should You Use?

Use website crawling when your product pages expose complete, consistent Product and Offer structured data and Googlebot can reach them. Keep a maintained product source for routine updates, use automatic item updates only as a mismatch safeguard, and move frequently changing prices or availability to frequent source updates or the Merchant API. Crawling is not an alternative to Merchant Center: it is one way to create or refresh a product source inside it.

What you are actually choosing

“Merchant Center versus crawling” describes different layers of the same system. Merchant Center is the destination where Google receives, validates and uses your product data. Crawling is a submission method that lets Google discover products on your store and build a product source from the information on those pages. Other submission methods include scheduled data files and direct Merchant API updates.

Automatic item updates are different again. They are a correction mechanism that can adjust a limited set of submitted attributes when Google sees a mismatch between your source and the landing page. They do not replace a regularly maintained product source.

Website-crawl product source

With automatic product submission from your online store, Google crawls eligible pages, reads their structured data and creates a product source in Merchant Center. Your store must be verified and claimed, you must permit Google to collect the data, and Google must be able to crawl and extract usable product information. A crawl can discover products without a manually uploaded file, but it still depends on the quality and availability of your pages.

Google says it checks products added automatically from an online store at least once every 24 hours. That is a stated checking cadence, not a guarantee that every price or stock change will appear immediately. Crawl scheduling, extraction success, processing and policy checks can all affect when a change becomes usable.

Automatic item updates

Automatic item updates compare submitted product values with information on the landing page and can correct certain mismatches. Google identifies four supported attributes: price, sale price, availability and condition. The feature is intended as a safety net for occasional discrepancies, not as your normal publishing pipeline. Google advises merchants to continue providing accurate product data frequently.

When a page contains several offers, Google must be able to identify which offer corresponds to the Merchant Center item. Matching can require identifiers such as a SKU or GTIN in the page annotations. If the page exposes ambiguous or conflicting offers, an automatic correction may not be applied or may apply to the wrong item.

Scheduled data-source updates

A scheduled source retrieves a product-data file from a directly accessible URL at the times you choose. The file URL must point to the data source itself. An HTML product page is not a substitute for a feed file, even if that page contains structured data. This approach gives you a predictable publishing workflow while leaving page crawling available for discovery and verification.

Merchant API updates

The Merchant API is the direct-update option for catalogs whose prices or availability change frequently. Google recommends it for frequently changing data and warns that automatic item updates may not work well when values change more than once per day. An API workflow can send changes as your inventory or pricing system produces them instead of waiting for a crawl or a scheduled retrieval.

Which method fits your store?

Store situation Best starting point What to verify
Product pages contain accurate structured data and Googlebot can access them Website-crawl product source Verify and claim the site, permit collection, keep Googlebot unblocked, and confirm that product markup is complete and eligible.
An existing source is generally correct, with occasional landing-page differences Automatic item updates as a supplement Use the feature for price, sale price, availability or condition discrepancies while continuing regular source updates.
Prices or stock change often, including more than once a day Frequent source retrieval or Merchant API Choose a process that sends changes directly and monitor processing; do not rely on automatic updates alone.
The site blocks crawlers or has incomplete, inconsistent markup Fix access and markup, then use a controlled data source Resolve crawl permissions, server capacity and data conflicts before expecting reliable automatic submission.

There is no documented universal performance winner. Crawl success, extraction accuracy, processing time and operational effort depend on your store, catalog and update frequency. Validate the method in your own Merchant Center account rather than assuming that one workflow is faster or more accurate for every merchant.

Requirements for reliable website crawling

Before enabling automatic product submission, check the dependencies that determine whether Google can discover and interpret your catalog.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Verified and claimed website: Complete website verification and claim the domain in Merchant Center. Automatic submission is tied to the claimed store.
  • Permission to collect data: Allow Google to collect product information from the site. A crawl cannot create a source if collection is disallowed.
  • Googlebot access: Robots rules, firewalls, authentication, geoblocking and rate limits must not prevent Googlebot from reaching product pages. Do not throttle Googlebot or Googlebot-Image as though it were abusive traffic.
  • Server-rendered product markup: Put the relevant Product and Offer structured data in the HTML returned by the web server. Markup that appears only after a fragile client-side process may not be extracted reliably.
  • Accurate customer-facing values: The price, currency, availability, condition and identifiers in markup must agree with what shoppers see. Customer-specific or location-specific rendering that exposes a different value to Google can create a mismatch.
  • Eligible products: Products still have to meet Merchant Center policies and technical eligibility requirements. Being crawlable does not guarantee approval.

Implement a website-crawl source step by step

  1. Verify and claim the store. In Merchant Center, complete the website verification flow and claim the domain associated with the product pages.
  2. Allow automatic collection. Enable the setting that permits Google to collect product data from the online store. If the option is unavailable, resolve account, ownership or eligibility issues first.
  3. Audit representative pages. Select products with a regular price, a sale price, an out-of-stock state, multiple variants and multiple offers. Check the HTML delivered to an unauthenticated browser and confirm that each page exposes the intended Product and Offer properties.
  4. Make values consistent. The visible price and currency must match price and priceCurrency; stock messaging must match availability; and the stated product state must match condition. Keep SKU or GTIN identifiers stable where offer matching is needed.
  5. Check crawler access. Review robots rules, web-application-firewall logs, DNS, TLS, redirects and server response codes. Ensure normal Googlebot and Googlebot-Image requests are not blocked or aggressively rate-limited.
  6. Validate markup. Test representative URLs with Google Search Console or the Rich Results Test. Correct missing, malformed or conflicting Product and Offer annotations before scaling the crawl.
  7. Enable and inspect the source. After activation, review discovered products, item diagnostics and disapprovals in Merchant Center. Treat the first crawl as a validation period, not proof that every catalog page is healthy.
  8. Reconcile ongoing changes. Compare the site’s current values with the values shown in Merchant Center. Investigate conflicts instead of assuming that a later crawl will resolve them.

How to use automatic item updates safely

Automatic item updates are useful when your submitted source is sound but an occasional landing-page change creates a short-lived discrepancy. They should sit alongside, not replace, your normal update process.

Keep the supported fields precise

Limit your expectations to price, sale price, availability and condition. A page change to a title, description, image, shipping promise or custom attribute is not covered by this correction mechanism. Those values must be maintained in the regular product source.

Make the landing page authoritative and stable

Google compares what it reads on the landing page with the submitted item. Do not show one price to a crawler and a different price to customers because of cookies, account status, location, device, timed scripts or personalization. If a value genuinely varies by market or customer, design the feed and page experience so the applicable offer is explicit and matchable.

Disambiguate multiple offers

When several sellers, conditions or variants appear on one URL, annotate each offer with identifiers that let Google match it to the correct Merchant Center item. SKU or GTIN can provide that link where applicable. A single generic price block for many offers gives Google too little information to make a safe correction.

Continue regular submissions

Schedule source retrievals or send updates through your normal feed or API process even when automatic item updates are enabled. A correction feature cannot reliably publish all catalog changes, and Google explicitly describes it as a supplement.

Choose a workflow for frequently changing prices or stock

Changes once a day or less

A crawl or scheduled source may be practical if your pages and feed are accurate and your business can tolerate processing that is not instantaneous. Keep an eye on the stated crawl check cadence of at least once every 24 hours for automatically submitted store products. Do not present that cadence to customers as a guaranteed update deadline.

Changes several times per day

Use a source that can be retrieved after each meaningful batch of changes, or connect the system that owns inventory and pricing to the Merchant API. The more often a value changes, the greater the risk that a crawl or daily schedule reads a stale state. Google recommends the Merchant API for this high-frequency scenario.

Flash sales and short-lived stock

Send the change directly when the sale starts, when the price reverts and when inventory reaches zero. Keep the landing page and the submitted item synchronized during each transition. Automatic item updates may catch a mismatch later, but they are not a dependable mechanism for a promotion whose validity can end before the next check.

Large catalogs with an existing feed pipeline

Retain the feed or API as the system of record and use crawling for discovery or corroboration. A crawl can help find newly published pages, while the controlled source supplies fields that are not reliably present in page markup and provides a repeatable change history.

Scheduled files versus crawling

Question Website crawl Scheduled data source
Where does Google read the data? Eligible product pages and their structured data A directly accessible product-data file
What must be kept healthy? Page HTML, markup, crawler access and customer-facing consistency File generation, file URL availability, schema validity and retrieval schedule
Can an HTML page be used as the scheduled source? Pages are the input for crawling No. The scheduled URL must return the product-data file itself.
Best use Discovery when pages already contain reliable structured data Controlled, repeatable publication of a known catalog state

You can use both. For example, let crawling discover products while a scheduled file or API supplies authoritative price and availability updates. The key is to avoid contradictory sources and understand which workflow owns each field.

Troubleshoot the common failure modes

Products are not discovered

  • Confirm the site is verified and claimed in the correct Merchant Center account.
  • Check that automatic collection is permitted.
  • Test the URL without login, blocked scripts or geo restrictions.
  • Inspect robots rules, firewall events and server logs for Googlebot requests.
  • Validate Product and Offer markup in the returned HTML, not only in a browser view after scripts run.

Price or availability is reported as mismatched

  • Compare the exact visible customer price with price, priceCurrency and any sale-price annotation.
  • Compare the stock message and purchase controls with availability.
  • Look for regional, cookie-based or account-based personalization.
  • Check that the submitted source and landing page refer to the same SKU, GTIN, variant and offer.
  • After correcting the cause, allow the relevant source retrieval or crawl and review diagnostics again.

Updates arrive late

  • Determine whether the change is waiting for a crawl, a scheduled file retrieval, feed processing or API processing.
  • For changes that occur more than once per day, move the field to a more direct update process rather than depending on automatic item updates.
  • Check whether server throttling, timeouts or failed file downloads prevented Google from reading the new state.
  • Do not infer guaranteed latency from the “at least once every 24 hours” crawl statement.

Conflicting data persists

Google identifies conflicting data as a common product-data problem. Map every active source, identify which system owns price, availability, condition and identifiers, and remove stale or duplicate submissions. A page that says “in stock,” a feed that says “out of stock” and an API update sent later can produce an apparently random result until the ownership and timing are reconciled.

Build an operating checklist

  • Review crawl, feed or API errors at a defined interval rather than waiting for customer complaints.
  • Test a sample of regular, sale, out-of-stock, variant and multi-offer pages after template releases.
  • Alert on changes to robots rules, firewall policies, DNS, TLS certificates and server capacity.
  • Keep product identifiers stable across the website, source file and API payloads.
  • Record when prices and availability change so you can distinguish stale data from processing delay.
  • Use Merchant Center diagnostics to investigate disapprovals and mismatches at item level.
  • Re-test structured data whenever checkout, pricing, localization or inventory logic changes.

What this comparison can—and cannot—establish

Google’s documentation establishes the roles, prerequisites and limitations of crawling, automatic item updates, scheduled files and the Merchant API. It does not establish a universal cost, extraction-accuracy, implementation-time or latency advantage for one method. Those outcomes vary with catalog size, page architecture, server capacity, update frequency and the quality of your source data.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Make the decision from operational facts: how often values change, whether Googlebot can reliably fetch pages, whether structured data is complete, whether you need fields that are not on the page, and how quickly a correction must reach shoppers. Start with crawling when the page is already a trustworthy data surface; retain a controlled source for routine updates; and adopt direct API or frequent-file updates when freshness is business-critical.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
