Google Merchant Center does not offer a universal “turn on UCP” switch. Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) is an open commerce protocol that lets agents and merchant systems cooperate across discovery, checkout, and post-purchase support. For Google’s UCP-powered checkout, a merchant must complete the technical implementation, submit Google’s interest form, and be selected before the Merchant Center onboarding hub and sandbox become available.
Once access is granted, the practical work is keeping product data and brand assets accurate, choosing supported capabilities, validating the UCP profile and APIs, and ensuring eligible listings carry native_commerce(checkout_eligibility). The currently described checkout is limited to selected merchants and eligible products in the United States, Canada, and Australia.

What UCP changes in Merchant Center
Google Merchant Center remains the place where merchants prepare the product information used on Google surfaces. Google Merchant Center Help describes it as “the central hub to prepare your product data to show ads and listings on Google surfaces.” UCP adds a protocol layer for agentic commerce: software agents can discover products, transfer carts, complete supported checkout journeys, connect identities when needed, and support customers after purchase.
That distinction matters. Merchant Center stores and distributes catalog information; UCP defines how an agent or Google experience can interact with the merchant’s commerce system. Updating a title, price, image, availability, or brand asset in Merchant Center is not the same as implementing UCP APIs.

Google’s documentation describes UCP-powered checkout appearing on eligible listings in AI Mode in Search and in Gemini. It is not presented as a feature that every account or every listing can enable immediately.
Availability, regions, and listing eligibility
Access is invitation-based during the rollout
The documented flow is staged. You first complete the technical implementation, then submit an interest form, and finally wait for Google to select your business. Only after selection does the Merchant Center onboarding experience and sandbox appear. An account that cannot see the UCP hub may simply not have been selected yet; missing controls do not necessarily indicate a feed error.
Where the described checkout applies
Google’s feature guidance identifies eligible products and participating merchants in the United States, Canada, and Australia. Its onboarding guidance describes a gradual rollout beginning in the United States, with Australia and Canada to follow next year in the wording of that guidance. Rollout timing and eligibility can change, so treat the countries as documented scope rather than a permanent availability promise.

The product attribute that controls the Buy button
Only listings using native_commerce(checkout_eligibility) display the UCP “Buy” button according to Google’s guidance. Do not assume that every item in an approved catalog is checkout-eligible. Eligibility is attached to individual listings, and the attribute must be represented correctly in the product data that Google receives.

How to implement UCP in Merchant Center
1. Make the catalog and brand assets dependable
Start with the data that Merchant Center already manages. Review product identifiers, titles, descriptions, prices, currency, availability, images, shipping information, and policy-related fields in the feed or content API used by your account. Keep the values synchronized with the systems that actually accept orders. A UCP interaction cannot produce a reliable checkout if the agent sees an obsolete price or an item that is no longer available.
Google also calls out brand assets. Check that logos, imagery, and other identity elements are current, correctly associated with the merchant, and suitable for the surfaces where the listing may appear. A technically valid UCP profile does not compensate for stale catalog or branding data.
2. Complete the technical UCP implementation
Implement the UCP profile and the commerce APIs required for the capabilities you intend to expose. The exact engineering work depends on your commerce platform and order architecture. Google’s onboarding material does not establish compatibility for named platforms, so ask your platform or service provider whether it supports UCP and which capabilities it plans to expose.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Plan the implementation around the actions an agent must perform: identify a product and its current offer, create or transfer a cart, hand the shopper to your site when appropriate, or return the information needed for native checkout on Google. If identity linking is part of your design, define how a Google or agent identity maps to an account in your system without weakening authentication or consent controls.

3. Submit the interest form
After the technical work is ready, submit Google’s UCP interest form. Submission is a request for consideration, not an activation command. Keep a record of the implementation version, participating markets, product categories, and technical contact so you can respond if Google requests clarification.
4. Wait for selection and onboarding access
Merchant Center onboarding appears only after Google selects the merchant. Until then, continue maintaining the feed and validating your own endpoints; repeatedly changing unrelated Merchant Center settings will not create access to the hub.
5. Use the sandbox to validate the integration
Selected merchants receive an onboarding experience and sandbox. Google says the sandbox is used to validate the UCP profile, cart transfer, and native checkout APIs. Test the complete data path rather than only an HTTP response: confirm that the product, price, inventory state, cart contents, taxes or shipping information required by your implementation, and final order handoff remain consistent from the agent request through your commerce system.

6. Select the capabilities your business can support
The integration hub lets merchants choose capabilities such as cart transfer to the merchant site, native checkout on Google, and identity linking. Select only functions that your systems can operate reliably in the markets and product categories you are submitting. Capability selection should reflect actual backend support, not an aspirational roadmap.

7. Mark eligible listings correctly
For products that meet the requirements for Google’s native checkout experience, ensure the listing carries native_commerce(checkout_eligibility). Validate the attribute in the feed or API payload and confirm that the listing remains eligible when price, inventory, shipping, or policy data changes. A UCP implementation by itself does not guarantee that the Buy button will appear on every product.
Choosing between UCP capabilities
These are implementation choices within one protocol, not competing products. The right combination depends on your checkout stack, account model, and ability to support the selected markets.
| Capability | Customer journey | What your systems must support | When it fits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cart transfer to the merchant site | The agent or Google experience builds a cart, then sends the shopper to your website to finish checkout. | A cart-transfer endpoint and a reliable way to preserve products, quantities, prices, and applicable checkout context. | Useful when your existing site checkout handles payment, tax, shipping, promotions, or complex products that are not ready for native Google checkout. |
| Native checkout on Google | The shopper completes the supported checkout journey in Google’s experience. | Native checkout APIs, accurate eligibility data, order creation, and fulfillment handoff for the selected products and markets. | Appropriate only when your backend can meet Google’s native checkout requirements and you have selected eligible listings. |
| Identity linking | A Google or agent identity is associated with a merchant account when the journey requires it. | Secure account matching, consent, authentication, and a clear unlink or recovery process. | Choose it when personalized account features or existing-customer benefits require a recognized merchant identity. |
Before selecting a capability, verify four conditions: the product listing meets checkout eligibility rules; your platform or provider supports the required implementation; your order and inventory systems can process the resulting requests; and the capability is available for the market in which you plan to operate.
How payment and seller responsibility work
In the described Google checkout, the merchant remains the seller of record. Google Pay is used for the payment experience, with payment details stored in Google Wallet. The feature guidance currently refers to standard Funding Primary Account Numbers (FPANs); Google may change the payment options as the feature develops.
Best Value
Seller-of-record status means the merchant still owns the commercial relationship: product terms, fulfillment, returns, refunds, customer support, taxes, and applicable legal obligations remain merchant responsibilities. Native checkout changes where the customer enters payment details; it does not transfer those responsibilities to Google.
Order updates and post-purchase support: what is actually documented
UCP is described as covering post-purchase support, so the protocol’s scope extends beyond the initial purchase. However, the official Merchant Center guidance reviewed for this setup does not identify a specific setting for order updates, status synchronization, shipment notifications, or post-purchase messages.
Do not look for a documented Merchant Center menu path that the guidance does not provide, and do not assume that enabling native checkout automatically turns on order-status messaging. The onboarding instructions specifically describe technical implementation, selection, sandbox validation, and capability choices; they do not define an order-update control.
If order visibility is a requirement, document the question for your commerce platform or UCP implementation team: which events are supported, which system is authoritative for status, how cancellations and refunds are represented, and how a customer can obtain help. Those details must be confirmed for your implementation rather than inferred from the broad statement that UCP includes post-purchase support.
Troubleshooting common setup problems
The UCP integration hub is missing
- Confirm that the technical implementation is complete.
- Check that the interest form was submitted with the correct Merchant Center account and business details.
- Allow for selection and staged rollout; the hub is not documented as an account-wide switch.
- If you use a third-party provider, ask it directly about UCP support and its rollout status.
The Buy button does not appear
- Verify that the listing is eligible rather than assuming catalog-wide eligibility.
- Check that
native_commerce(checkout_eligibility)is present in the submitted product data. - Confirm that price, availability, shipping, and policy information are current.
- Check whether the product and merchant are in a supported market and selected for the feature.
Sandbox validation fails
- Compare the UCP profile with the capabilities selected in the integration hub.
- Trace a complete cart-transfer or native-checkout request, including product identifiers and quantities.
- Look for mismatches between feed data and the inventory or order system that receives the request.
- Test identity-linking paths separately from checkout if both capabilities are enabled.
A provider cannot confirm compatibility
Google’s guidance tells merchants using a third-party provider to ask that provider about its UCP plans. Request a specific answer about supported capabilities, markets, API versions, sandbox participation, and production support. Do not label a platform compatible solely because it supports Merchant Center feeds or ordinary website checkout.
Implementation checklist
- Audit product feeds, identifiers, prices, inventory, shipping data, and brand assets.
- Decide whether each product journey needs cart transfer, native checkout, identity linking, or a combination.
- Complete the UCP technical implementation for the selected capabilities.
- Submit the UCP interest form for the correct Merchant Center account.
- Wait for selection before expecting the onboarding hub or sandbox.
- Use the sandbox to validate the UCP profile, cart transfer, and native checkout APIs.
- Add and verify
native_commerce(checkout_eligibility)only for listings that meet the documented conditions. - Confirm market availability and provider support before planning a production launch.
- Define internally how order status, refunds, cancellations, and customer support will be handled, because the reviewed guidance does not provide a Merchant Center order-update setting.
What merchants should expect next
UCP is best treated as an integration project rather than a Merchant Center preference. Merchant Center continues to manage the product information shown on Google, while UCP connects eligible commerce journeys to merchant systems. Access remains selective, rollout is gradual, and product-level eligibility matters. A careful implementation therefore starts with clean catalog data and a capability decision, proceeds through Google’s selection and sandbox process, and treats post-purchase behavior as a separate requirement that must be verified in the actual implementation.
Quick Recap
Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
