Use one accurate, crawlable main image in image_link, with no added promotional graphics. Before Google’s announced change takes effect on January 31, 2027, the documented minimum is 100 × 100 pixels for non-apparel products and 250 × 250 pixels for apparel. Google says images for all products will then need to be at least 500 × 500 pixels. For better quality, Google recommends 1500 × 1500 pixels or larger, while keeping each file at or below 64 megapixels and 16 MB.
What Google Merchant Center requires in a product image
Merchant Center uses the image in image_link as the primary visual for an item. It must show the product you are advertising, load directly as an image, and be reachable by Google’s crawlers. A generic placeholder, a stock image that does not depict the advertised item, a product-page URL, or a restricted preview does not satisfy that purpose.

The main image should make the complete product easy to recognize. Google’s specification advises a crisp, in-focus, well-lit image with the full silhouette visible. A plain white or light neutral background is a practical choice for the primary shot, although staged imagery is acceptable when it still clearly represents the product.
Use a direct, public image URL
- Use an HTTP or HTTPS URL that resolves to the image file itself, not to a general product page.
- Make the URL publicly accessible without a login, cookie, payment step, or geography restriction.
- Allow Googlebot and Googlebot-image to request the file; firewalls, hotlink protection, and security rules must not block them.
- Serve the image in the format declared by the URL and file extension.
Supported file formats
Google lists JPEG, WebP, PNG, non-animated GIF, BMP, and TIFF as accepted formats. Check the encoded file as well as its extension. Renaming a file does not convert it, so a file called photo.jpg that is actually encoded as another format can still fail validation.

Pixel dimensions: current minimums and the 2027 change
Google’s image-too-small guidance describes two minimums before the announced policy change. The distinction is based on whether the product is apparel.

Google says warnings for images below 500 × 500 pixels began in July 2026. The January 31, 2027 date is an announced enforcement date, so check the current Merchant Center documentation before relying on it for a feed launch or migration. An image that passes today’s threshold may therefore need replacement before the new rule is enforced.
Minimum compliance is not the quality target
The minimum only determines whether the dimensions clear a threshold. Google recommends 1500 × 1500 pixels or larger for image quality across formats. That recommendation gives Shopping systems more usable detail and leaves room for display at different sizes; it does not change the stated minimum.

Do not submit a thumbnail and do not artificially scale up a small image. Upscaling can create a larger file without adding real detail, and Google’s specification specifically advises against it.
Stay below the hard ceilings
- Maximum resolution: 64 megapixels per image.
- Maximum file size: 16 MB per image.
A 1500 × 1500 image is 2.25 megapixels, well below the 64-megapixel ceiling. Very large originals can exceed the limit even when their dimensions appear suitable, so check both pixel count and encoded file size after export.
How the product should be framed
Google advises that the product occupy roughly 75–90% of the frame. This keeps the item prominent without cutting off its edges. Leave enough margin to show the complete silhouette, but avoid excessive empty background that makes the product appear tiny in Shopping results.

- Show the entire item, including parts that a buyer needs to identify the model or bundle.
- Use even lighting and focus; motion blur, glare, and heavy shadows can hide important details.
- Keep the camera angle honest. Do not crop away included accessories or use perspective that materially changes the product’s appearance.
- Use a clean white or light neutral background for a straightforward primary image when that best isolates the item.
Contextual scenes are useful for supporting images. For example, a piece of furniture can be shown in a room, and clothing can be shown on a model, provided the image remains relevant and the product is clear.

The primary image must provide an unobstructed view of the product. Remove graphics added during editing or post-production, including:
- Calls to action such as “Buy” or “Shop now.”
- Prices, discounts, shipping offers, coupon codes, and other sales messages.
- Promotional adjectives, warranty or service claims, and added compatibility or condition labels.
- Barcodes, QR codes, watermarks, badges, borders, and decorative overlays.
- Retailer or manufacturer names and logos added on top of the photograph.
A logo, label, or text that is physically part of the product is different from an overlay added to the image. Do not remove genuine product markings when doing so would misrepresent the item; instead, avoid adding separate marketing graphics around them.

Choosing the correct Merchant Center image fields
Keep the primary and supporting image roles separate. Submit exactly one main image in image_link, then use the other attributes for views that add information.

Additional images are optional but useful when a single front view cannot show the product’s construction, included parts, scale, or important details. They supplement the primary image; they do not excuse a misleading or noncompliant image_link.

Examples of useful additional views
- A rear or side angle that shows ports, controls, or dimensions.
- A close-up of material, texture, finish, or a distinguishing component.
- A photo of every part included in a bundle, without adding text that claims something not present.
- A relevant in-use or room-setting image that provides context without obscuring the item.
AI-generated product imagery and metadata
Google’s official product data specification states: “All images created using generative AI must contain metadata indicating that the image was AI generated.” Google gives IPTC Digital Source Type metadata as an example. Preserve that embedded metadata when submitting an AI-generated image rather than stripping it during optimization or export.

The image still has to accurately depict the product, meet the same dimensions and file-size limits, and remain free of prohibited promotional overlays. Metadata does not make a generic or deceptive image acceptable.
Step-by-step image preparation and feed submission
- Choose the primary photograph. Select a clear image of the exact item and variant in the offer. Confirm that the complete product silhouette and included components are visible.
- Remove disallowed additions. Retouch away calls to action, prices, shipping claims, watermarks, QR codes, borders, and added retailer or manufacturer graphics.
- Export at a useful resolution. Aim for at least 1500 × 1500 pixels where practical. Do not enlarge a low-resolution source to create the appearance of detail.
- Check the limits. Confirm the dimensions, total megapixels (no more than 64), and encoded file size (no more than 16 MB).
- Verify the file format. Make sure the actual encoding and URL extension agree and that the format is JPEG, WebP, PNG, non-animated GIF, BMP, or TIFF.
- Publish a direct URL. Place the image at a stable HTTP or HTTPS address that returns the raw file and does not require authentication.
- Populate the feed. Put that URL in
image_link. Add up to 10 supporting URLs inadditional_image_linkand uselifestyle_image_linkfor relevant contextual imagery. - Test crawler access. Request the URL from an external network or an incognito session and check that your hosting rules allow Googlebot and Googlebot-image.
- Submit and inspect status. After processing, review Merchant Center diagnostics for missing, invalid, too-small, or overlay-related image issues.
Why an image is missing, rejected, or still showing an old version
The image is missing or fails to load
First check that the relevant feed attribute is populated and that the URL is valid. Open the URL directly; it should return the image rather than a redirect to a product page, an access-denied response, or an HTML error page. Then check hosting and security controls for crawler blocks. Google identifies broken or inaccessible URLs and unsynchronized updates from third-party apps as common causes of missing product images.
The format is reported as invalid
Inspect the file’s actual encoding and compare it with the extension and server response. Re-export it as a supported format instead of simply renaming the file. Also check that the file is not an animated GIF when a non-animated GIF is required.

Measure the actual pixel dimensions, not the size displayed in your store’s layout. Before January 31, 2027, use at least 100 × 100 pixels for non-apparel and 250 × 250 for apparel; plan for at least 500 × 500 across all products when the announced rule takes effect. A 1500 × 1500 or larger original is Google’s quality recommendation, subject to the 64-megapixel and 16-MB ceilings.
Text or a watermark triggers an issue
Remove the overlay from the source file, generate a new clean export, and update the feed. Do not try to hide prohibited graphics by shrinking them, lowering opacity, or moving them into a border; the main image is expected to show the product without added promotional content.
The corrected image has not appeared yet
Google says a renamed file can prompt prioritized recrawling in approximately 24–72 hours. With an unchanged URL, recrawling can take up to six weeks. After a changed image URL is submitted, Google may continue displaying the previously approved image for up to 30 days while reviewing the new asset. These are stated process windows, not guarantees for every account or item, so keep the old URL available until the replacement has been processed.
