Gemini already places calls when you ask it to, using your Android phone’s calling app. A separate feature that would let Gemini speak with friends or family on your behalf is not available: Android Authority reported evidence of it in unfinished app code, but Google has not confirmed the feature or given a release date.
What Gemini can do now
Google’s current instructions let you ask the Gemini mobile app—or Gemini acting as your mobile assistant—to place a call through your device’s calling app. That is a user-directed call: Gemini helps dial the person or business you specify; it is not the reported feature in which Gemini would conduct a conversation for you.

Google says the current calling feature can reach saved contacts, businesses, and phone numbers. You can ask, for example, “I need to talk to [contact name]. Can you call them?” or “Call [contact first name]’s mobile number.” A relationship such as “my sister” can also work if you have saved that relationship in Gemini instructions. What the report says about calls to personal contacts
On October 5, 2026, Stephen Schenck at Android Authority reported that code and interface examples found in a Phone app update may point to a broader kind of call. The examples reportedly refer to contacts such as “Mom” and “John” and suggest Gemini could deliver a message or ask a basic question.
The report also describes possible recipient opt-out options and permissions for writing or deleting information through app actions. These details were unfinished and did not work properly in the report’s testing. An app teardown can reveal development work, but it does not establish that a feature will ship. Google has not confirmed this expansion, and the report gives no launch date.

Google separately describes Gemini connected-app calling and messaging through default phone and messaging apps in its Android features listing. Google notes that features can vary with subscription, setup, and country; that general listing does not confirm the reported personal-call automation.
What you need to use Gemini calling on Android
Google lists these requirements for its current calling feature:
- An Android phone or tablet with an active mobile plan.
- The Gemini mobile app.
- Contact information saved on a device signed in to your Google Account.
- Phone permission for the Google app, which lets it access the device’s calling app. Contact and call-log permissions can improve contact matching.
Gemini uses data to help choose an app and connect you with the right person. The actual call is handled through the device’s calling app, not through a separate Gemini calling service.
How to manage or stop current calling access
- To disconnect the Phone app from Gemini, open Gemini’s Connected Apps settings and turn off the Phone app connection.
- To change the Google app’s access on Android, open your device’s app permissions settings and adjust its Phone permission. You can also review contact and call-log permissions there.
- For an emergency, use your device’s calling app directly. Google says not to use Gemini’s Phone app feature for emergency calls.
Google also says the Phone app cannot accept or reject incoming calls on your behalf. These instructions apply to the current Android calling flow, not to the unconfirmed feature described in the teardown.

What remains unknown
Neither the report nor Google’s current help pages establish how a future Gemini-led personal call would identify itself to the person receiving it, what it could say, how an opt-out would work, or what information would be retained. There is also no confirmed release date or verified eligibility by device, country, or subscription. Buying an Android phone does not guarantee access to the rumored feature.
