Google Maps will match the design of Polestar vehicles soon

A report claiming that Google Maps will match the design of Polestar vehicles soon is the kind of change drivers notice immediately: colors, typography, UI spacing, and guidance panels start to feel like part of the car instead of a third-party overlay.

That matters because it reduces visual friction—especially while you’re navigating in motion. It also signals deeper integration between the in-car experience and Google’s mapping interface.

What it means when Google Maps matches Polestar vehicle design

“Match the design” usually refers to a UI theming pass: the map app adopts the car maker’s visual language so the experience looks cohesive across screens and menus. In practice, you may see changes to map controls, route guidance panels, fonts, icons, and how dark mode is rendered.

This doesn’t typically change the underlying navigation logic—routes, traffic, ETA calculations, and search results are still driven by Google Maps. The biggest differences are visual and interaction-oriented.

Which Polestar models and setups are affected

Polestar vehicles often use Google services and, depending on model year, may run Google-powered infotainment components. The change usually targets the in-car Maps experience more than phone-only usage.

  • Polestar 2 (Android Automotive-based infotainment in many configurations)
  • Polestar 3
  • Polestar 4
  • Phone-to-car modes when you use Android Auto to display Google Maps
  • Car-to-phone apps that mirror navigation screens via projection (depending on your setup)

If your navigation comes from the car’s built-in Google Maps experience, you’ll care most about infotainment updates. If you primarily use your phone with Android Auto, you’ll focus on your phone’s Google Maps and Android Auto updates.

Prerequisites to get the new look

Rollouts rarely arrive to every vehicle at the same time. You’ll generally need a sufficiently new infotainment software version and an up-to-date Google Maps build.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Polestar infotainment updated (look for a recent software update in car settings)
  • Google Maps updated on the car (if it has a Play Store or app-updating channel)
  • Phone updated if you use Android Auto (Google Maps + Android Auto versions matter)
  • Stable network during downloads (Wi‑Fi is often faster for large update packages)

How to update so the matched design shows up

Use the update path that matches your setup. If you’re unsure which one you use, start by checking where the navigation screen is coming from—car software vs. your phone projection.

Update inside the Polestar (built-in Google/Android Automotive OS)

Open your Polestar’s settings and check for system updates. If the system supports in-car app updates, update Google Maps there as well.

  1. On the car screen, open Settings.
  2. Go to System or Software update (wording varies by software version).
  3. Select Check for updates.
  4. If an update is available, start the download and install.
  5. After the car reboots, open the app list and find Google Maps.
  6. If your infotainment has an App Store / Play Store entry, update Google Maps there too.

Update Google Maps on your phone (when using Android Auto or CarPlay)

If your route display is coming from a phone-projected Google Maps screen, phone updates matter more than the car’s built-in app version.

  1. Open the App Store (iPhone/iPad) or Play Store (Android phone).
  2. Search for Google Maps.
  3. Select Update if available.
  4. Verify you’re on the latest build by revisiting the Google Maps app page (the version number is shown there on many stores).

Update Android Auto (phone-to-car) when applicable

When you use Android Auto, an outdated Android Auto client can block UI rollouts or create mismatches between the car’s system and the projected app look.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. On your Android phone, open the Play Store.
  2. Search for Android Auto.
  3. Update to the newest version available.
  4. Unplug and replug your phone to the car (or reboot the head unit if needed).

How to verify the design match is active

Once updates are in place, verification is about spotting UI cues and checking version info. There’s often no single “enable matched design” switch.

Spigen GlasTR EZ FIT Screen Protector Matte for Polestar 2 (2022-2026)
  • 9H Hardness – Rated at the highest level on the pencil hardness scale, this glass resists scratches from everyday hazards such as key fobs, sunglasses, paw scratches from pets in the car, and the everyday contact of parking-lot bumps and daily driving without leaving a mark on your Polestar 2 screen.
  • Anti-Glare Matte Finish – The micro-textured surface scatters incoming light in multiple directions, diffusing reflections before they reach your eyes. Navigation maps, rear camera feeds, and driving information stay readable across changing cabin lighting and direct sunlight without the sharp glare common to clear glass.
  • Matte Anti-Fingerprint Finish – Matte texture minimizes the appearance of fingerprints on the 11.2-inch dashboard screen, helping to preserve screen clarity and touch responsiveness.
  • EZ FIT Tray, Installation under 60 seconds – EZ FIT includes auto-alignment tray makes installation quick and easy, helping position the protector perfectly in under 60 seconds. A silicone adhesive layer helps prevent air bubbles during application for a clean, seamless fit
  • Vehicle-Specific Precision Cut – Engineered for Polestar 2 (2021/2022/2023/2024/2025/2026) and only - NOT compatible with other Polestar

Check the UI styling cues

Look for changes like:

  • Navigation guidance cards that feel integrated with the car’s color palette
  • Map control placement and icon style matching other Polestar UI elements
  • Font weight and spacing that align with the infotainment’s standard typography
  • Dark mode rendering that looks consistent with the car theme

Confirm app and system versions

You’ll usually need two version checks: the car software and the Google Maps app.

What to check Where What to record
Polestar infotainment software Settings > System > Software update (or About) Software version string
Google Maps version App info (inside car) or App Store / Play Store (on phone) Build number

If you still don’t see the new styling after updating, the versions are the first data point to use when you troubleshoot.

Customization options you can expect (and what may be limited)

Car-integrated UI changes often reduce user-facing customization. Google Maps may follow the car’s theme rules more than it exposes separate theme controls.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Theme and dark mode behavior

Many car systems synchronize with a single theme setting. If Polestar uses a dark/light preference system-wide, Google Maps may follow it instead of offering independent theme choices.

If you have both options available, test both “Auto” (time-based) and a fixed dark mode setting and confirm the map look updates immediately.

Route guidance visuals

The most noticeable updates are usually route guidance panels: turn-by-turn cards, arrival summaries, and how lanes/road context overlays appear. You might not get a dramatic redesign, but the borders, spacing, and icon style can change enough to feel like a Polestar UI element.

Lane guidance and map styling

Lane guidance is sensitive to rendering performance and display constraints. If your matched design update includes performance tweaks, you may also see improvements in how quickly lane overlays appear when you begin a turn.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Troubleshooting when the matched design doesn’t appear

When UI rollouts don’t show up, the causes are usually one of these: you’re not on the newest software, the rollout hasn’t reached your region/vehicle batch, or cached app data is keeping the old UI bundle.

Restart and re-check software updates

  1. Reboot the car infotainment (use the car’s standard restart option, not a hard power cut).
  2. Go back to Settings > Software update and re-run Check for updates.
  3. Open Google Maps and wait 1–2 minutes for any UI assets to load.

Clear caches and refresh Google Maps data

Depending on the infotainment, you may be able to clear app cache without losing your saved places. Treat this as a middle step before any reset.

  1. Open Settings on the car.
  2. Go to Apps (or Applications).
  3. Select Google Maps.
  4. Choose Storage.
  5. Select Clear cache.
  6. Reopen Google Maps and check whether the UI has changed.

If you have only “Clear data,” be cautious: it can sign you out or remove offline content.

Reset infotainment settings (last resort)

If caching doesn’t help and you’ve already confirmed you’re current, do a limited reset (if offered) rather than a full factory reset.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Go to Settings > System.
  2. Look for Reset options like Reset settings or Restart.
  3. Avoid Factory reset unless you’re prepared to reconfigure preferences and profiles.

If you see the old look, check region rollout and compatibility

Rollouts are commonly staged. Two nearby drivers can be on different app/UI bundles for days or weeks. If your versions are current but the UI still hasn’t updated, that’s the most likely explanation.

Use the version recording table above, then compare with someone else on the same Polestar model if you have that option.

Privacy and data considerations with updated map UI

UI matching doesn’t inherently increase privacy risk, but updated apps can request or refresh permissions. After updates, verify your permissions haven’t changed.

  • Confirm location permissions (foreground vs. background) match your preference.
  • Check whether Google Maps can use your location for “traffic” and “navigation.”
  • If you share your location history with Google, review your settings under Google account privacy.

Alternative path: if you need a consistent look today

If you want the most Polestar-consistent experience right now—even before the matched design arrives—focus on reducing visual mismatches caused by theme switching and guidance mode differences.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use a consistent theme across your phone and car

When you use projection (Android Auto), mismatched dark mode behavior can look like an “old UI.” Set your phone and car to the same theme mode strategy (both “Auto” or both “Dark”).

Rely on voice guidance while the visuals catch up

If you’re testing and the visuals don’t match yet, voice instructions remain consistent across UI themes. Use voice guidance until the UI bundle updates in your specific rollout window.

FAQs

Will my Polestar navigation start looking different immediately after an update?

Not always. Some updates change the UI only after cached assets refresh or after the rollout reaches your vehicle batch. If you updated but still see the old look, give it a day and re-check after a reboot.

Can I turn off the matched design?

Usually there’s no “disable matched design” switch. The car-integrated UI is often controlled by system theming rules. Your best option is aligning theme settings (dark/light/auto) across the system and Google Maps.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does this affect routing accuracy or traffic calculations?

Generally no. Design theming should not change route logic. Still, after updates, it’s normal to see small improvements in responsiveness or guidance rendering.

What if I only use Google Maps on my phone and never use the car screen?

Then you’ll only see the design changes if Google applies a related theming update to the phone UI you’re using. Otherwise, your phone experience may remain unchanged while the car UI updates.

What’s the best way to confirm I’m eligible for the change?

Update your Polestar infotainment and your Google Maps build, then compare version strings you recorded with what others report. Current versions don’t always mean the UI bundle is enabled yet, but they remove the biggest blocker.

Bottom Line

If Google Maps starts matching Polestar’s design language, it’s mainly a UI theming and integration improvement—one that should make navigation screens feel native to the car. The practical work is updating your Polestar software and Google Maps (and Android Auto on your phone if you use projection).

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the change doesn’t appear right away, it’s often rollout timing or cached UI assets. Verify your versions, reboot, clear Google Maps cache, and be patient with staged rollouts.
