You can use Google Maps to estimate a walking route’s distance by measuring map points or following mapped walking directions. Neither method, as documented in Google’s instructions, records how far you actually walk in real time.
Choose the right Google Maps method
| Method | What it measures | Best for | Platform |
|---|---|---|---|
| Measure distance | Accumulated distance between points you place on the map | A quick estimate or a line you want to trace manually | Android and computer |
| Walking directions or a My Maps route | A proposed path along mapped walking routes, where available | Planning a walk that follows streets and paths | Google Maps; My Maps directions and line measurement are documented for computer |
| Live recording | Your movement during the walk | Finding out how far you actually walked | The cited Google Maps instructions do not describe this capability |
Google’s Android help explains point-by-point measurement, including a straight-line example. The computer instructions likewise describe measuring between points. These tools total the points or line you draw; they do not automatically route the measurement over sidewalks.

Measure a walking path manually on Android
- Open Google Maps and touch and hold a spot on the map that is not a place name or icon. This places a pin.
- Choose Measure distance.
- Move the map until the black circle is positioned over the next point on the path you want to measure.
- Tap Add point. Repeat at bends and other changes in direction.
- Read the accumulated distance shown on the map. Use the undo or clear controls if you need to correct or restart the measurement.
More points let you trace a winding path more closely. The result remains a manually drawn map measurement, not a record of your movement.

Plan a route along mapped walking paths
For a route that should follow mapped pedestrian routes rather than a hand-drawn line, use walking directions. In Google My Maps on a computer, you can create a directions layer, enter a start and destination, select Walking, add destinations, and drag the route to adjust it. You can also use the measurement tool to click the start, bends, and end of a line. See Google’s My Maps directions instructions.
Walking directions are estimates based on mapped networks and available data. Google’s developer documentation describes walking routes as using pedestrian paths and sidewalks where available, but warns that directions may not always include clear pedestrian or bicycle paths. Check the proposed route on the map rather than assuming every segment is walkable or accessible.

Does this tell you how far you actually walked?
No. Measuring a planned line or route gives you an estimate before you set out. The cited Google Maps instructions explain measuring map points and planning directions; they do not describe recording a person’s live movement. If you need the distance you covered, a preplanned measurement alone cannot establish it.
