Use Google Search when you want a fast answer to a local question from a browser or phone. Both can return local restaurant results; the practical difference is map-first browsing versus query-first results.
Google may use your current location even when you leave a place name out of the search. Maps gives you a dedicated map, restaurant profiles, nearby searches, and (on supported desktop interfaces) price and open-hours filters. Search is usually faster for a narrowly worded request, while Maps is better when you are still deciding where to eat.

Google Maps and Google Search at a glance
Both services participate in Google’s local-results system, so neither is a separate directory with completely different restaurants. A restaurant can appear in Search, Maps, or both, depending on the query, your location, available business information, language, country, device, and personalization. Google says local results are shown across Maps and Search: local ranking guidance.

| Ask a short question such as “restaurants near me” | Google Search | It can infer nearby intent from your location without requiring a city or neighborhood in the query. |
| Check hours, phone number, reviews, ratings, or directions for a chosen venue | Google Maps | Maps’ place records are built for examining one business and navigating to it. |
| Search for “late-night ramen in [neighborhood]” or another precise phrase | Google Search first | A detailed natural-language query can be the quickest route to a local result; open the map result if you need spatial comparison. |
| Filter a restaurant list by price or open status | Google Maps on supported desktop interfaces | Google documents price and hours filters for restaurant searches on desktop. Filter availability varies on mobile and by region. |
| Get ideas without naming a cuisine or venue | Maps Explore | Explore can show nearby popular restaurants and local favorites, with lists that change by location and time. |

What Google Maps is designed to do
Browse a category on a map
On a computer, open Google Maps and enter a category such as restaurants in the search box. Google’s instructions describe selecting a result to see its position and details on the map: Search locations on Google Maps. You can pan and zoom to compare districts, select another pin, and keep the surrounding options visible instead of opening each result in a separate search.
Search near a particular area
Maps can search a category around a place you specify. Try a query such as restaurants near Central Station, or search for a neighborhood or landmark first and then use the nearby-place option. Google’s nearby-search guidance explains that a search can be anchored to another place rather than only to your phone’s current position: Search for nearby places and explore the area.
Inspect a restaurant’s place record
Selecting a listing opens the information Google has for that venue. Depending on what is available, you can see business hours, a phone number, ratings, reviews, photos, location, and directions. Use the record to verify the address and today’s hours before traveling; a pin on the map alone is not confirmation that a venue is currently open.
Apply available filters
Google’s desktop Maps help lists price and hours among filters for restaurant searches. A filter may let you narrow the list to venues open at a particular time or within a price range. The exact controls are not guaranteed on every device: Google says Android filter options vary by language and country or region. If a filter is missing, use words in the query (for example, “cheap restaurants open now”) or switch to the desktop interface rather than assuming that no matching restaurants exist.
How to find nearby restaurants with Google Maps
- Open Maps. On a computer, go to Google Maps in your browser. On a phone, open the Maps app and allow location access if you want results centered on your current position.
- Enter the broadest useful category. Start with
restaurantsfor a wide scan, or use a cuisine such asThai restaurants. Avoid adding a specific name unless you already know which venue you want. - Set the area when your search is not about where you are. Add
near [neighborhood, landmark, or city], or search for that place and then search nearby. This prevents a work location, hotel, or recently used map area from steering the results away from your intended neighborhood. - Read the map and list together. Compare the pins’ positions with the list’s names and basic details. Zoom in for a walkable cluster; zoom out to include a wider area, but remember that a wider view can include restaurants that are farther away than your original intent.
- Use filters when they appear. On supported desktop searches, choose price or hours controls. On mobile, look for the available filter chips and treat their absence as a platform or regional limitation, not as evidence that the category has no options.
- Open the strongest candidates. Check hours, address, phone number, ratings, reviews, and directions in each place record. Look for a recently updated schedule when a restaurant has unusual service hours.
- Confirm the route. Select Directions and choose walking, driving, cycling, or transit as appropriate. A restaurant that looks close on a map may be separated by a river, highway, or restricted entrance.
Maps may personalize results. Two people searching the same category can see a different order or different recommendation emphasis because location, language, account settings, and available local information differ.

How Google Search handles “near me” restaurant queries
Location can be inferred
Google Search can use your current location to show nearby results even if you do not write a city or neighborhood. For example, restaurants near me can produce local results from a browser or phone. Google documents this location behavior for Android Search: Understand and manage your location when you search on Google.
Add a place name for more control
Location inference is convenient but not always what you mean. Include the target area when you are planning ahead, traveling, or searching from an office, hotel, or virtual private network. Queries such as vegetarian restaurants in Old Town, breakfast near Union Square, or open sushi restaurants in Austin give Search an explicit geographic anchor. You can then open a map result to inspect the surrounding streets and competing venues.
Check location permissions when results are wrong
If Search shows restaurants in the wrong city or gives generic web pages, Google recommends adding a location to the query and checking device or browser location permissions. Android’s location controls and Search-services settings are being updated, so the exact label or path can differ by version. The Android help page above explains the current location controls and notes that settings are rolling out.
Know what Search does not promise
Search can surface local information such as maps and contact details, but the cited Search guidance does not establish that its general results page offers the same restaurant price and open-hours controls as Maps. If you need a visual list with dedicated filters, open the Maps result or start directly in Maps.
Maps versus Search by task
| Task | Google Maps | Google Search |
|---|---|---|
| Spatial browsing | Strong fit: category search, pins, zooming, and nearby searches are central to the interface. | Can return local results, but the general results page is not documented as providing the same map-browsing workflow. |
| Restaurant details | Place records document hours, phone numbers, ratings, reviews, and directions when information is available. | May show local details, a map, or contact information; the fields depend on the result and query. |
| Price and open-status narrowing | Desktop help documents price and hours filters; mobile availability varies by language and region. | The location help covers nearby results, not equivalent restaurant filter controls. |
| Unstructured discovery | Explore can surface popular restaurants and local favorites; some lists are limited to selected areas. | A short query can quickly answer a specific request, especially when you name a cuisine or neighborhood. |
| Directions | Built-in route planning from the place record. | Usually links into a map or place result for route planning. |
| Ordering | A supported listing can expose an ordering option and hand you to a provider’s website. | The same documented handoff can appear in Search; checkout occurs on the provider’s site. |
Using Maps Explore for inspiration
When you do not have a particular cuisine, restaurant, or neighborhood in mind, open the Explore tab in Maps. Google says Explore can show nearby popular restaurants and local favorites, and that some recommendations adapt to your location and time of day: Find nearby inspiration in the Explore tab.

Explore is useful for generating a shortlist, not for guaranteeing a complete or objective ranking. Trending spots and partner-driven lists are available only in select cities or areas. The list can change as your map position, time, or local data changes. Open each candidate’s place record before deciding, especially if the recommendation is outside your immediate neighborhood.

Why two nearby restaurants can appear in a different order
Relevance, distance, and prominence
Google says local Maps results are based primarily on relevance, distance, and prominence. Its help documentation states: “Several factors, primarily relevance, distance, and prominence, influences the local results.” The grammar is Google’s wording. Relevance measures how well a listing matches the query; distance reflects the relationship between the search location and the venue; prominence reflects how well-known or established Google considers the place from available information.
A farther restaurant can therefore appear above a closer one if Google considers it a better match for the query. The nearest pin is not automatically the first result, and an organic Maps position cannot be bought. Google says paid content is labeled and that payment from other companies does not influence Maps results: Google’s nearby-places guidance.
Business information affects what is displayed
Google Business Profile guidance recommends that businesses keep their information complete and accurate. Missing or outdated hours, categories, phone numbers, or addresses can make a restaurant harder to match to a query or can leave a user with stale details. Google’s local-ranking guidance explains the role of complete business information: Tips to improve your local ranking on Google. Treat the profile as a useful reference, then verify time-sensitive details with the restaurant when the cost of a mistake is high.

Popular-times and wait-time data is conditional
Some restaurant profiles show popular times, estimated wait times, or typical visit duration. Google says these features use aggregated and anonymized information from users who opted in to Google Location History. A venue needs enough data for Google to publish a useful estimate, so not every restaurant will show these indicators. Details are explained in About popular times, wait times, and visit duration data. Do not interpret a missing chart as proof that a restaurant is empty or that Google has no listing for it.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Ordering after you choose a restaurant
Google can display an ordering option for a restaurant where ordering providers are supported. Selecting it sends you to the provider’s website, where you view the menu, choose items, and complete the order. Google documents this flow for both Search and Maps: Discover food ordering with Google.
Availability depends on language and country, and not every restaurant or area offers the option. The button is a handoff, not a guarantee that Google processes the payment or controls the menu, delivery estimate, fees, substitutions, or cancellation policy. Check those terms on the provider’s site before submitting an order. If no ordering button appears, use the phone number or official ordering link in the place record when available.
Troubleshooting nearby-restaurant searches
Search returns restaurants in the wrong area
- Add the city, neighborhood, landmark, or postal code directly to the query.
- In Maps, search the intended area first, then run the restaurant category nearby.
- Check whether device or browser location access is disabled or whether your map is centered on a previous location.
- If you are traveling, remember that a current location can override the place you had in mind unless you name it explicitly.
Maps shows no price or hours filter
- Try Maps on a desktop browser, where Google documents those filters for restaurant searches.
- On Android, accept that filter choices vary by language and country or region.
- Use query terms such as
open now, cheap, or a price description when a formal control is unavailable.
A restaurant appears open but is closed
- Check the day-specific hours in the place record rather than relying on a single “open” label.
- Look for special-hours notices and recent owner updates.
- Call the restaurant when the trip is time-sensitive, particularly on holidays or during severe weather.
A promising restaurant is missing
- Search the cuisine and neighborhood separately instead of relying on one broad phrase.
- Zoom the map out slightly and inspect nearby districts.
- Try Search with the restaurant’s name, then open the Maps result.
- Understand that local results depend on the information Google has and on how closely a listing matches your query.
Explore recommendations are unavailable
Explore lists are not identical everywhere. Google says trending spots and partner-driven lists appear only in select cities or areas, and recommendation availability can depend on location and time. Use a category search when Explore has little or no content.
Search does not show local results
Include a geographic term, confirm location permissions, and try Maps. Google’s Android location guidance is the appropriate reference for managing location-aware Search behavior: Understand and manage your location when you search on Google. Exact privacy-setting labels may change as Google updates Search services.
Best Value
Privacy and personalization considerations
Location-aware results require Google to use a location signal from your device, browser, or account context. You can avoid an implicit “near me” interpretation by naming the city or neighborhood in the query. If you disable location access, Search and Maps can still work with an explicitly typed place, but the result may be less convenient or less precise.
Recommendations and rankings may be personalized. A category search can include results influenced by your map position and account context, while popular-times information is based on aggregated, anonymized data from opted-in Location History users. These mechanisms are different: personalization changes what may be emphasized for you, whereas popular-times data describes an aggregate pattern when Google has sufficient data.
Practical decision rules
Choose Maps first when…
- You want to compare several restaurants by their position and walking or driving distance.
- You need to inspect hours, phone numbers, ratings, reviews, or directions in one place record.
- You are exploring an unfamiliar neighborhood and want to pan, zoom, and search nearby.
- You want to try desktop price or hours filters where they are available.
- You need inspiration from nearby popular restaurants or local favorites in Explore.
Choose Search first when…
- You have a concise, specific request such as a cuisine, meal, neighborhood, or opening time.
- You are already in a browser and want a quick local answer without opening a map interface.
- You are planning from somewhere other than the place you will visit and can name that destination.
- You want to search for a restaurant by name and then open its map record for directions or details.
Use both in sequence when…
Start with Search for a natural-language query, then open Maps to compare the resulting places spatially and inspect their records. Or begin in Maps to build a geographic shortlist, then use Search for a specific menu, event, or ordering question. Moving between the two is normal because they draw on the same local-results ecosystem but present it differently.

- State the geographic target. Decide whether “nearby” means your current position, a neighborhood, a landmark, or a destination city.
- Run the fastest suitable query. Use Search for a precise phrase or Maps for a broad category and map scan.
- Make a shortlist of three to five venues. Record distance, hours, price information where shown, and any constraint that matters to you.
- Verify the decisive detail. Open the place record, read the day-specific hours, inspect the address, and call if a closure or schedule change would ruin the trip.
- Navigate or order. Use Maps Directions for travel. If an ordering option is present, follow the provider handoff and review the provider’s menu and fees before paying.
For most people, the answer is not “Maps or Search forever.” Use Search for speed and explicit questions; use Maps for geographic comparison, place details, and navigation. When location precision, filters, or discovery matter, Maps is the stronger starting point. When you simply need a fast nearby answer, Search is usually the shortest path.
