The short answer: Maps for orientation, Earth for visual analysis
The two services overlap, but they are designed around different ways of looking at a place. Google Maps is optimized for quickly finding an address, route, trailhead, town, or region. Turning on Terrain preserves that familiar overhead map while adding relief information. You can scan a broad area quickly and read contour lines without learning a new camera model.
Google Earth is optimized for exploration. Its 3D scene lets you change the camera angle, circle a ridge, look along a canyon, and compare the apparent steepness of slopes. On desktop, the elevation-exaggeration control can make subtle relief easier to see. That makes Earth the stronger choice when the question is “What does this landform look like in three dimensions?” rather than “What is the quickest elevation context for this place?”

For geology, the distinction is important. A visual landform is not the same thing as a mapped geological unit. The interfaces can help you locate outcrops, terraces, valleys, volcanic cones, drainage patterns, and possible field stops, but they do not establish authoritative rock-unit boundaries everywhere.
What Google Maps Terrain actually shows
A conventional map with relief information
On desktop, Google Maps offers a Terrain layer through the Layers control. Google describes the layer as local terrain: contour lines indicate changes in elevation, while gray numbers show altitude. The result is a quick relief overlay that remains tied to the normal map’s roads, labels, places, and satellite context.
Contours are useful for answering practical orientation questions. Closely spaced lines indicate a rapid change in elevation over a short horizontal distance; widely spaced lines indicate gentler relief. A sequence of nested lines can reveal a hill or basin, while V-shaped contours that point uphill commonly follow a drainage valley. These are interpretation aids, not a substitute for reading the legend and datum of a formal topographic map.

Google notes that some map layers may be unavailable where information is insufficient. Do not assume that every country, island, city edge, or remote mountain has the same contour density or labeling. If the Terrain option is missing, incomplete, or visually sparse, that is a coverage limitation rather than evidence that the ground is flat.

What Google Earth adds for terrain exploration
A movable 3D scene
Google Earth’s viewer is built for mountains, hills, landmarks, and underwater scenery. Zooming changes scale; tilting lets you look across or along a slope; rotating lets you inspect a landform from another azimuth. The same ridge can appear obvious from one direction and nearly invisible from another, so changing the camera is a meaningful analytical step rather than a cosmetic effect.
Elevation exaggeration is a display control
In desktop Earth settings, elevation exaggeration ranges from 0.01 to 3. Google’s help documentation says that 1.5 shows a natural elevation. Treat this as a visualization setting. Increasing the value does not improve the underlying elevation data or make a measurement more accurate; it changes how strongly relief is rendered on screen. If you capture an image or describe a view, record whether exaggeration was used so another person does not mistake the appearance for the actual slope.
Why 3D is especially useful for landforms
A top-down contour pattern can be difficult to translate into a mental model. Earth lets you test that model immediately. Tilt toward a canyon to see whether apparent walls are continuous or interrupted by benches. Rotate around a volcanic cone to distinguish a symmetrical summit from a ridge seen end-on. Look obliquely across a plateau to identify scarps, incised channels, and broad piedmont surfaces. These observations are valuable for planning questions and field orientation, even when they are not geological proof.
Google Maps and Google Earth compared by task
| Task | Better starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Fast local relief check | Google Maps Terrain | Contour lines and gray altitude labels appear on a familiar map with place and road context. |
| Understanding a mountain, canyon, or escarpment | Google Earth | Tilting and rotating reveal the landform from multiple viewing directions. |
| Making subtle relief visible | Google Earth | Desktop elevation exaggeration changes the display scale of vertical relief. |
| Keeping navigation and addresses central | Google Maps | The terrain overlay remains part of the ordinary Maps workflow. |
| Exploring catalogued contour or slope layers | Google Earth | Earth’s layer catalog includes dedicated elevation-contour and slope products, subject to availability and stated limitations. |
| Historical imagery or GIS import/export on a desktop | Google Earth Pro | Google describes these as Earth Pro desktop capabilities. |
| Authoritative geological-unit identification | Neither by itself | Use the geological survey or other authoritative dataset appropriate to the specific location. |
How to use Google Maps Terrain step by step
- Open Google Maps on a desktop browser. Desktop controls expose the Layers menu used for the terrain overlay.
- Open Layers and select Terrain. The base map changes to a terrain view while retaining map context.
- Find the location you need. Search for an address, place, trailhead, or coordinate, or pan and zoom to the area.
- Read the contour pattern. Use line spacing to distinguish relatively steep and gentle ground, and follow contour shapes to trace ridges and valleys.
- Use the gray altitude labels as orientation clues. Compare labels at multiple points rather than treating a single number as a precise survey result.
- Switch views when the pattern is ambiguous. Satellite imagery or the standard map can help connect the relief pattern with visible drainage, roads, and buildings.
Maps works best for a first-pass question such as “Is this route climbing toward a ridge?” It is less suitable when you need to inspect the same slope from several oblique angles or make subtle relief stand out.

How to explore terrain in Google Earth
Basic browser workflow
- Open Google Earth and search for the place. Start with a named feature, address, or coordinates.
- Zoom until the landform fills enough of the scene to interpret. Too wide a view hides local shape; too narrow a view removes regional context.
- Tilt the camera. Compare a near-top-down view with an oblique view that shows slope faces and valley depth.
- Rotate around the feature. Inspect at least two or three directions; one azimuth can conceal a ridge, bench, or break in slope.
- Adjust elevation exaggeration only when needed. In desktop settings, choose a value between 0.01 and 3. Google describes 1.5 as natural elevation. Record the chosen value if you are sharing the result.
- Return to a non-exaggerated or natural view before judging appearance. Exaggeration can make a landform easier to see but can also make slopes look more dramatic than they are.
Questions Earth can answer visually
- Is a valley broad and mature-looking or narrow and deeply incised in the displayed terrain?
- Does a ridge continue beyond the point visible from a road or trail?
- Are apparent cliffs continuous, stepped, or interrupted by benches?
- How does a landform connect to its surrounding drainage and regional relief?
These are observations about displayed topography. They do not identify the age, composition, or exact geological origin of the feature.
Earth’s contour and slope layers: specifications and caveats
Global elevation contours
Google’s current developer layer catalog lists global elevation contours at 20-meter and 40-meter intervals. The catalog marks the 40-meter contour layer as experimental. Its descriptions warn that inferred contours may contain errors and are not onsite or survey-grade information. Layer availability can depend on the plan identified in the catalog, and Google warns that data layers can change periodically during the year.
The 10-meter slope layer
The catalog also lists a 10-meter-resolution slope layer. Slope is expressed in degrees from 0 to 90. Google describes this layer as experimental and inferred, with possible errors and no equivalence to onsite or survey-grade information. A displayed slope value should therefore be treated as an exploratory indicator, not as a measurement for engineering, boundary, safety, or scientific certification.
How to use these layers responsibly
- Check whether the layer is available for your account and location before planning around it.
- Read the layer description and status instead of assuming that every catalog entry has the same evidentiary quality.
- Use contours and slope to select areas for closer inspection, not to certify a grade or geological boundary.
- Expect revisions: the catalog says data layers can change periodically throughout the year.
Can Google Earth show geology?
It can show the terrain on which geology acts, and it can help you examine landforms that may have geological explanations. It does not follow from that capability that Earth contains authoritative mapped rock units everywhere. A color, texture, scarp, drainage pattern, or apparent layer in imagery is not by itself a confirmed lithology or contact.

What the products are good for in a geology workflow
- Locating candidate outcrops, terraces, volcanic forms, landslide scars, or erosional features before a visit.
- Understanding regional relief and drainage so a map or field notebook has geographic context.
- Comparing a landform with historical imagery where that capability is available in Earth Pro.
- Communicating a three-dimensional hypothesis to classmates, colleagues, or trip partners.
What requires another source
If you need mapped rock units, structural contacts, precise elevations, hazard boundaries, engineering grades, or evidence that can support a permit, legal decision, or published analysis, obtain the appropriate authoritative geological or elevation data for the named location. The correct source depends on the country, state, province, map series, date, and intended use; neither interface supplies one universal geology layer.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why Viewshed is not a scientific validation tool
Google’s Earth Help documentation gives a specific warning about Viewshed: Viewshed is not designed for scientific precision and isn’t intended to be used as a definitive data source.
Viewshed can be useful for visualizing what may be visible from a placemark, but the warning rules out treating its output as a definitive line-of-sight, surveying, or scientific result.
That statement is specific to Viewshed. The contour and slope layers have their own separate qualifications: experimental or inferred status, possible errors, and no equivalence to onsite or survey-grade information. Keep those limitations attached to the individual feature you use.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Google Earth Pro for a more involved desktop workflow
Google describes Earth Pro as a desktop product with historical imagery and GIS data import/export. Those capabilities matter when terrain exploration is part of a larger desktop task rather than a quick visual check. You can bring external geographic data into the same environment, compare imagery from different dates, and organize a place-based investigation around a 3D scene.
Best Value
Google’s Earth download page identifies the offered release as version 7.3. Software versions can change, so verify the live download page before relying on that number for an installation guide, support ticket, or classroom handout.
When Pro is worth the extra step
- You need to compare how a slope, shoreline, excavation, or glacier changed across historical imagery.
- Your work begins with GIS data that must be imported or exported rather than viewed only as a web scene.
- You are preparing repeatable desktop views for a report, lesson, or group review.
Pro does not remove the underlying data limitations. Importing a precise external dataset can improve a workflow, but a visually impressive Earth scene should not be mistaken for independent validation of that dataset.
Browser, graphics, and 3D access problems
Google says desktop Maps 3D imagery and Earth view require a supported current browser. It also notes that browsers that block WebGL, or certain graphics cards, may prevent 3D display. A missing 3D effect therefore does not necessarily indicate a problem with the terrain itself.

Symptoms and practical responses
| Symptom | Likely issue | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| Terrain layer is absent or incomplete | Local information is insufficient or the layer is unavailable there. | Check another zoom level and nearby area; do not infer flat terrain from missing coverage. |
| Earth remains flat or shows no 3D imagery | Unsupported browser, WebGL blocked, or graphics hardware limitation. | Use a current supported browser, check whether WebGL is enabled, and try a device with compatible graphics support. |
| Contours or slope layers cannot be selected | Availability or plan requirements may apply. | Review the catalog entry for that layer and confirm access for the account and location. |
| Terrain looks implausibly steep | Elevation exaggeration is set above natural display. | Return to the natural setting described by Google or record the exaggeration value before interpreting the view. |
| Two views appear to disagree | Different camera angles, zoom levels, imagery dates, or layer displays. | Match the camera, scale, imagery date, and active layers before drawing a conclusion. |
A practical Maps-to-Earth workflow
Using both products in sequence is often more efficient than trying to make one interface do everything.
- Start in Maps Terrain. Locate the site, identify the broad ridge-and-valley pattern, and note the altitude labels that frame the area.
- Move to Earth. Search for the same location and inspect it from overhead and oblique angles.
- Test the landform from multiple directions. Rotate and tilt rather than relying on one screenshot.
- Use exaggeration sparingly. Increase it only to reveal subtle relief, then return to a natural-looking setting for interpretation.
- Inspect available catalog layers. If you use contours or slope, read their interval, resolution, status, and access requirements.
- Bring in authoritative data for the actual claim. Use the relevant geological map, elevation model, survey, or field observation when the decision depends on accuracy.
This sequence separates orientation, visualization, and evidence. It also leaves a clear record of which conclusions came from a display and which came from an authoritative dataset.
Decision guide: which should you open first?
Choose Google Maps when…
- You need a quick answer about local relief while navigating among addresses, roads, or places.
- You want contour lines and altitude labels without learning 3D camera controls.
- You are screening many candidate locations and speed matters more than immersive inspection.
Choose Google Earth when…
- You need to tilt, rotate, and zoom around a mountain, canyon, ridge, or underwater feature.
- Top-down contours are difficult to translate into a mental 3D model.
- You want to adjust displayed elevation or inspect Earth’s available contour and slope layers.
Choose Earth Pro when…
- Historical imagery or GIS import/export is part of the desktop task.
- You need a repeatable, organized project rather than a one-off map glance.
Choose an authoritative external source when…
- The answer must identify a rock or sediment unit.
- A precise elevation, slope, boundary, or hazard value will guide a real-world decision.
- The result must be defensible to a regulator, engineer, surveyor, geologist, or scientific reader.
Bottom line
Google Maps is better for a fast, local terrain layer: turn on Terrain, read contours and altitude labels, and keep the ordinary map context visible. Google Earth is better for exploring mountains, canyons, ridges, and other landforms as movable 3D scenes, with optional elevation exaggeration and additional catalogued layers. Earth Pro is the stronger desktop choice when historical imagery or GIS exchange matters.
For geology, use either product as a visualization and orientation aid—not as a universal geological map or survey. Experimental and inferred layers, changing availability, browser limitations, and the explicit Viewshed warning all matter. When accuracy or geological identification is the point of the exercise, pair the visual exploration with the authoritative data and field verification appropriate to the location.
