Short answer: Google Maps Timeline and Apple Maps Visited Places can both build a personal record of places you visit, but they use different storage designs. Google Timeline is an opt-in, device-centered history that can be copied to Google’s servers only when you separately enable encrypted backup. Apple says Visited Places is end-to-end encrypted and unreadable by Apple when it syncs through your Apple Account with two-factor authentication. Neither setting represents every location-related data flow: Google separates Timeline from Search and Web & App Activity, while Apple describes location, route, search, and map-interaction data used to operate Maps.

Google Timeline and Apple Visited Places at a glance

Question Google Maps Timeline Apple Maps Visited Places
Activation Off by default; you must opt in. Requires enabling Visited Places; only visits after activation are included.
What the history represents Places visited and routes or trips taken, with travel modes such as walking, biking, driving, and public transit. A list of places visited in Maps.
Primary storage model Saved on each device where Timeline is enabled. Optional encrypted backup can place a copy on Google’s servers. Synced across Apple devices through an Apple Account when two-factor authentication is enabled; Apple says the history is end-to-end encrypted.
Can the provider read the saved history? Google documents device storage and optional encrypted backup; it does not make the same “Apple cannot read it” claim for Timeline. Apple states that Visited Places are end-to-end encrypted and cannot be read by Apple.
Automatic retention choices 3, 18, or 36 months. 3 months, 1 year, or Forever.
Deletion scope Delete individual entries, a day, a range, or all Timeline data. Device data and server backup are separate. Remove one place, clear Visited Places history, or turn the feature off. Significant Locations has a separate history control.
Other location-related processing Search Services History and Web & App Activity can retain location-related information outside Timeline. Maps may process authorized location, routes, searches, places viewed, and map interactions to provide features.

The table describes the documented product models, not a single privacy score. A device-local history with optional backup and an end-to-end-encrypted synced history solve different problems.

What Google Maps Timeline saves

Places, routes, and travel patterns

Google defines Timeline as a personal map of places you have visited and routes or trips you have taken. On supported devices it can display inferred travel modes, including walking, biking, driving, and public transit. Because the feature records precise device location regularly, the resulting history can show more than a place name: it may reconstruct when a trip happened, the path between stops, and the time spent around a location.

Google’s own wording is important: “Timeline is off by default for your Google Account and can only be turned on if you opt in.” Once enabled, precise location is regularly saved to every device on which Timeline is turned on, even when Google apps are not open. The setting therefore follows enabled devices rather than acting as one universal switch for every phone, tablet, or account session.

Why Google says it uses Timeline data

Google says Timeline can personalize Maps and support other purposes such as anonymized location-based insights, fraud and abuse prevention, and service development. Depending on account settings, Timeline data can also help estimate the effectiveness of nearby-business advertising. Google describes those as estimates rather than personal location data being handed to businesses.

Where the history is stored

Timeline is saved on each enabled device. Google also offers an optional encrypted backup so you can move Timeline to another device. Backup is a separate opt-in on each device. Turning backup off, or deleting a backup from Google’s servers, does not erase Timeline data that remains on the original device.

This architecture creates a practical distinction between availability and exposure. Without backup, a lost, reset, or damaged phone can take its local history with it. With backup, migration is easier, but an additional encrypted copy exists on Google’s infrastructure. Google’s Android help documentation also warns that edits or deletions made on one device may not be reflected on other devices, so checking one phone is not always enough to confirm the state of every copy.

Retention and deletion controls

Google documents automatic deletion after 3, 18, or 36 months. You can also edit a visit or its time, remove individual entries, delete a day or date range, or delete all Timeline data. Menu names and availability can vary by Maps version and device, so use the labels shown on your phone rather than assuming another Android release has the same layout.

Google identifies some places as particularly personal, including certain medical and support facilities, and says those visits are deleted from Timeline soon after identification. The classification is not guaranteed to be current or complete. This does not mean every search, photo, navigation request, or other activity associated with the location disappears; those records can be governed by separate settings.

What Apple Maps Visited Places saves

A history that starts only after you enable it

Visited Places helps maintain a list of places you have been. Apple says only places visited after Visited Places is enabled are shared with Maps, so activating it does not retroactively create a complete history of earlier trips.

Apple’s privacy statement, dated September 14, 2026, says: “Your Visited Places are end-to-end encrypted and cannot be read by Apple.” In the same statement, Apple explains that Maps data such as Pinned Locations, Recents, Visited Places, and Guides can sync across devices with end-to-end encryption when you are signed in to an Apple Account and have two-factor authentication enabled. Apple Support says Visited Places appears on devices signed in to that same account.

Retention choices and deletion

Apple Support documents three Visited Places retention choices: 3 months, 1 year, or Forever. You can remove an individual visited place, clear the entire Visited Places history, or turn the feature off. If the feature remains enabled, new visits can continue to appear after a deletion.

Visited Places is not the only location-history control on an iPhone. Apple separately provides a Clear History action for Significant Locations in Location Services settings. Clearing that record and clearing Visited Places address different data sets, so perform both actions if your goal is a broader reset.

End-to-end encryption does not mean Maps never handles location

The encryption claim applies to the saved Visited Places history. Apple’s Maps privacy page also describes operational data sent to Apple so Maps can provide navigation and related features. Depending on the feature, this can include the time of a request, device and software details, authorized device location, the map area visible on screen, searches, places viewed, and other interactions.

For navigation, Apple says Maps may receive your origin or current location, destination, and chosen transport mode. It also describes route geometry used for preferred-route and predicted-destination results, widgets, and departure suggestions. Apple says steps are taken within 24 hours so it does not learn that a submitted route was preferred or predicted. These flows are separate from Apple’s statement that the stored Visited Places history is end-to-end encrypted.

Apple further says precise locations are converted to less-exact locations within 24 hours and that routing, traffic, and nearby-point-of-interest information may be used in anonymous, aggregated form to improve Maps. Many personalized features, Apple says, are created on-device. Those qualifications describe different processing stages; they should not be collapsed into a claim that Apple receives no location information at all.

Does Google Maps save everywhere you go?

When Timeline is enabled, Google says it regularly saves precise device locations to each enabled device, including when Google apps are not in use. That makes Timeline capable of covering much of your movement, but it is not a guarantee that every stop is identified correctly. Place names, travel modes, and visit boundaries can be inferred and edited, and the quality of the record depends on device settings, available signals, and Google’s classification.

Timeline also does not equal your entire Google location record. Google warns that Search Services History or Web & App Activity may preserve other location-related information after Timeline is switched off or deleted. Examples include a general area or IP-derived location in Search and Maps activity, plus location embedded in photos when camera settings include it.

Can Apple read your visited places?

Apple says it cannot read Visited Places because the history is end-to-end encrypted. That statement depends on the feature’s documented security conditions: synced Maps data is described in the context of being signed in to an Apple Account with two-factor authentication enabled. It applies to the saved Visited Places record, not to every location or route signal generated while you use Maps.

Someone who wants to minimize Apple’s location processing therefore has two separate jobs: control Visited Places and review Location Services, Significant Locations & Routes, and Maps permissions. Turning off one history feature does not automatically prevent navigation requests, searches, or other Maps functions from handling the data they require.

How long does each service keep location history?

Service Automatic options Manual actions Important scope note
Google Timeline 3, 18, or 36 months Edit visits and times; delete an entry, day, range, or all Timeline data Backup deletion and device-local deletion are distinct; other Google activity may remain.
Apple Visited Places 3 months, 1 year, or Forever Remove one place; clear Visited Places history; turn the feature off Significant Locations history has a separate Clear History control.

These are product setting choices documented by Google and Apple, not statistics about how long either company keeps every kind of location information.

How to check and change the settings

Google Maps Timeline checklist

  1. Open Google Maps and find the Timeline controls. Confirm whether Timeline is on for the current device and review which other devices have it enabled.
  2. Open the backup setting and check whether encrypted backup is enabled. Remember that backup is enabled separately per device.
  3. Review the automatic-deletion choice and select 3, 18, or 36 months if one of those intervals fits your needs.
  4. Use the Timeline date view to edit an incorrect visit, remove a place, delete a day or range, or delete all Timeline data.
  5. If you deleted a server backup, check the original device separately; Google says deleting the backup does not remove device-local Timeline data.
  6. For a broader Google cleanup, inspect Search Services History and Web & App Activity in your Google Account. Timeline controls do not govern all location-related account activity.

Google’s current help pages provide the detailed controls at Google Maps Timeline management and explain the privacy model at How Google keeps your Timeline data private. Account-wide activity settings are described at Google Account location controls.

Apple Maps Visited Places checklist

  1. On iPhone, open Settings > Apps > Maps > Location and review the Visited Places controls. Labels can move between operating-system versions.
  2. In Maps, open Places > Visited Places to see the history and its retention choice.
  3. Choose 3 months, 1 year, or Forever, depending on how long you want the list maintained.
  4. Remove a specific place or use Clear History to erase the Visited Places list. Turn the feature off if you do not want future visits added.
  5. If you also want to clear Significant Locations, open the Location Services settings and use its separate Clear History control.
  6. Check that the same Apple Account and two-factor authentication are used on the devices where you expect encrypted Maps data to sync.

Apple’s support guide for these controls is Apple location-history controls. Apple’s explanation of Maps data handling is in Apple Maps & Privacy.

Which design is better for your privacy goal?

If you want the provider to be unable to read the saved visit list

Apple makes the clearest published claim for this narrow requirement: it says Visited Places is end-to-end encrypted and cannot be read by Apple. The condition is that the relevant Apple Account security and sync requirements are in place. You must still account for operational Maps requests, which are separate from the encrypted history.

If you want history to remain primarily on your devices

Google Timeline is explicitly device-centered. Leaving encrypted backup disabled keeps the documented Timeline copy on each enabled device, although that makes migration and recovery harder. Google does not present Timeline with Apple’s explicit “cannot be read by Apple” wording, so device-local storage should not be treated as proof of an identical end-to-end-encryption design.

If you want a short automatic retention window

Both services offer a three-month option. Google also offers 18 or 36 months; Apple offers one year or Forever. Select the shortest interval that still serves your practical need, then review manual deletion behavior because automatic retention does not erase unrelated search, photo, route, or account records.

If you need the history on several devices

Apple’s documented model is account-based sync across Apple devices when the security requirements are met. Google’s model requires Timeline on each device and treats encrypted backup as a separate opt-in; Google warns that edits on one device may not propagate to another. Check every device before assuming a deletion or correction is universal.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

  • Confusing Timeline with all Google location data: review Search Services History and Web & App Activity as separate controls.
  • Assuming a deleted Google backup erased the phone: backup deletion and device-local Timeline deletion are different actions.
  • Assuming Apple’s encryption covers navigation requests: Visited Places encryption does not eliminate the location, route, search, and map-interaction data Apple describes for operating Maps.
  • Expecting old Apple visits to appear after activation: Apple says only places visited after Visited Places is enabled are shared with Maps.
  • Clearing one Apple history and forgetting the other: Visited Places and Significant Locations have separate controls.
  • Trusting place classification completely: Google’s automatic handling of particularly personal places can be incomplete or out of date, and related searches or photos may remain elsewhere.
  • Following an outdated menu path: Google documents Android-specific instructions, while Apple’s labels can change with operating-system versions and regions. Confirm the controls shown on your device.

Bottom line

Google Maps Timeline is an opt-in record of precise device locations, places, and trips, stored on each enabled device with optional encrypted server backup. Apple Maps Visited Places is an opt-in list that Apple says is end-to-end encrypted and unreadable by Apple when synced under the stated Apple Account security conditions. The meaningful comparison is not “which app collects no location.” Both mapping services process some location or route information to deliver features. Compare the storage architecture, retention choices, deletion scope, and separate account-level controls against the privacy outcome you actually want.
