Google Maps on Your Website: What’s Free, What Costs, and How to Stay in Control

Yes—if you need a straightforward interactive map or Street View on a website, Google’s Maps Embed API is free to use with unlimited requests. It still requires an API key and a billing account enabled for the Cloud project. Other Google Maps Platform APIs, including custom JavaScript maps and static map images, have different usage limits and can incur charges.

Which Google Maps option fits your website?

The key distinction is how the map is delivered and what the visitor can do with it. An embedded iframe is usually the simplest route; APIs that build or return maps for your site have their own billing rules.

Option What it provides Usage and billing point Best suited to
Maps Embed API An interactive map or Street View panorama in an iframe Google says requests are free with unlimited usage. A valid API key is required, and billing must be enabled for project setup. Google Maps Embed API usage and billing A location, store, office, or destination map when the standard embedded experience is enough
Maps JavaScript API A dynamic map that developers can customize Usage is priced by SKU and billable events; a displayed map counts as a map load. Free usage caps depend on the SKU. Google Maps Platform pricing Sites that need custom map behavior or a more tailored interface
Maps Static API A map image rather than an interactive iframe Each requested static map image counts as a map load; applicable usage and pricing depend on the SKU. Maps Static API usage and billing Pages that need a map image rather than an interactive map

Do not apply the Embed API’s unlimited no-charge rule to JavaScript or Static API usage. Choose the product based on the features your site needs, then estimate billable events for that specific product and SKU.

What “free” means for an embedded map

Google’s documentation states that the Maps Embed API is free to use with unlimited requests. That describes the API’s usage charges, not a promise that setup requires no account or billing configuration. Google’s quickstart instructs users to enable billing on the Cloud project, create an API key, enable the Maps Embed API, and use the key in the iframe URL. Maps Embed API quickstart

In practice, the setup requirement and the usage price are separate: billing must be enabled for the project, while Embed API requests themselves are at no charge. The pricing caps for other Maps Platform services do not turn Embed API requests into paid requests.

How free usage caps work for other Maps APIs

For Google Maps Platform Core Services other than the Embed API, Google uses pay-as-you-go pricing based on billable events and their associated SKUs. Each applicable SKU has its own monthly free usage cap. Caps reset on the first day of each month at midnight Pacific time; volume discounts apply automatically at higher usage levels. Google replaced its former monthly $200 credit with SKU-specific free usage caps effective March 1, 2025. Google Maps Platform billing overview

Google’s 2026 pricing documentation lists these standard monthly caps for eligible SKUs:

Pricing category Standard monthly free usage cap
Essentials 10,000 requests per SKU, except listed Map Tiles API SKUs
Map Tiles API, Essentials 100,000 requests per SKU
Pro 5,000 requests per SKU
Enterprise 1,000 requests per SKU

India pricing has separate eligibility and caps based on account and usage location. Google’s documentation lists monthly caps of 70,000 for Essentials, 700,000 for Map Tiles Essentials, 35,000 for Pro, and 7,000 for Enterprise. Check the current eligibility rules and pricing page before relying on these figures. Google Maps Platform pricing

These are category caps for listed SKUs, not one allowance shared by every API or a blanket number of free map views for a project. A site’s actual bill depends on the product, SKU, billable events, usage, and applicable account pricing. Use Google’s current price list and calculator for an estimate; a single dollar figure cannot be given without those details. Current price list · Google Maps Platform pricing calculator

Set up an Embed API map

  1. Create or select a Google Cloud project. Use the project where you want to manage the map integration.
  2. Enable billing for that project. Google’s quickstart requires billing to be enabled during setup, even though Embed API requests themselves are free.
  3. Enable Maps Embed API and create an API key. Requests need a valid key.
  4. Put the key and the location query in the iframe URL. Follow Google’s documented URL format and place the iframe where the map should appear on the page. Embed API quickstart

Protect the key and manage paid API usage

API keys should not be left unrestricted. Google says customers are financially responsible for charges resulting from abuse of unrestricted API keys. Restrict a key to the websites that should use it and to the APIs it needs; monitor API metrics and quotas; and configure Cloud Billing budgets and alerts. Google Maps Platform API security best practices

  • Restrict the key: limit it to the intended website referrers and APIs.
  • Monitor use: review metrics and quota consumption for the relevant APIs.
  • Set budgets and alerts: alerts notify you when spending reaches configured thresholds, but they do not themselves guarantee that usage will stop.
  • Use quotas when a hard ceiling matters: a quota limit can constrain usage, but requests may stop responding when the quota is reached.

Check Google’s terms before using map content

Free API usage does not mean unrestricted permission to copy, store, modify, or redistribute map content. Maps Embed API use remains subject to the Google Maps Platform Terms of Service, including its License Restrictions; Google says Maps Platform products must comply with the standard terms. If your use involves storing imagery, extracting tiles, redistributing content, or another nonstandard use, review the current terms and the documentation for the specific API before proceeding.
