How to download an area in Google Maps

Open the Google Maps app while you have an internet connection.

Tap Select your own map.

Move and zoom the map rectangle until it covers the destination and the roads you may need.

Tap Download and wait for the download to finish before you leave coverage.
You can also start a download from a searched place’s information sheet. The available labels or menu placement may vary as the app changes. Google’s offline maps instructions describe the current options.
What works offline—and what does not
Google Maps can provide driving directions without an internet connection when the entire route falls within the downloaded map area. If part of the route lies outside it, offline directions may not cover the full trip.

Driving: Directions can work for routes entirely inside the saved area.

Traffic and alternate routes: These are unavailable offline, so you will not get live traffic conditions or rerouting based on them.

Transit, bicycling, and walking: Google says these directions are unavailable offline.
Offline maps are therefore a backup for driving through an area with weak or absent service, not a substitute for connected navigation in every situation.

Keep the map available and up to date
Google says offline maps expire and need to be updated before expiration. When a saved map is within 15 days of expiring and the device is connected to Wi-Fi, Google Maps attempts to update it automatically. Check Profile picture or initial > Offline maps before a trip to see whether your saved area needs attention.
Availability and storage options
Offline map downloads are not available in some countries and regions. Google cites factors such as contractual limitations, language support, and address formats; a destination may therefore not be downloadable even if the feature is available where you live.
On supported Android devices, Google Maps can use a portable SD card for offline map storage if the device and storage settings support it. This is optional—not a requirement for downloading maps—and many phones do not have an SD-card slot. See Google’s storage and availability guidance for details.

Download an area large enough to include your starting point, destination, and likely driving route.

Confirm the download has completed and the area appears under Offline maps.

Check that the map is current and has not expired.

Plan for the loss of live traffic, alternate routes, and offline transit, bicycle, or walking directions.
