The key distinction is where you see the symbol. A mark drawn on the Google Maps canvas describes a road, place, transit line or incident. An icon in your phone’s notification shade is an alert generated by the Maps app or the operating system. They do not share one universal icon dictionary. Use the map layer legend for map marks, and read the notification’s text and category for phone alerts.
Map symbols and phone notifications are different systems
Google Maps uses symbols in the map itself to label places, show traffic conditions, draw routes and identify incidents. Those symbols belong to the map layer you are viewing. A notification banner, status-bar badge or notification-shade icon is separate: it tells you that the app or phone has an update, reminder or location-sharing event.
When an icon is unclear, first note its location. Is it on the map canvas, beside a route, or in the phone’s notification tray? Then identify what it refers to: a road or place, your own device location, or another person’s shared location. Finally check the phone platform, country, Maps version and notification permissions. Android and iOS can use different artwork, and Google can change labels or notification channels without changing the underlying feature.

What the main Google Maps map symbols mean
Place pins and category markers
The official Maps layer legend groups nearby places into categories rather than assigning a separate meaning to every possible business logo. Common groups include food and drink, retail, outdoor attractions, emergency services and city services. Selecting a pin opens the place card, where you can see the name, address, hours and other available details. A pin’s color or pictogram identifies its category; it does not indicate traffic speed or whether the business is currently open unless the place card says so.
Traffic colors on roads
| Map color | Meaning | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Green | No traffic delays | Traffic is moving without the delays represented by the other colors. |
| Orange | A medium amount of traffic | Expect slower movement than free-flowing roads. |
| Red | Traffic delays | Plan for significant slowing and allow extra time. |
| Darker red | Slower speeds within the delayed traffic range | The deeper the red, the slower the traffic shown on that road segment. |
These are categorical legend meanings, not a promise of a particular speed or arrival time. Conditions can change between the moment the map is drawn and the moment you reach the road. Gray or blue lines can represent routes and other map features, so do not read every colored line as a traffic measurement.

Crash, construction and closure markers
Incident symbols identify events such as crashes, construction and road closures, along with other reported disruptions. Tap the symbol on a phone or click it on the web map to open the incident details. Google’s guidance is direct: “To find details about what happened, click or tap the icon.” A closed road may also be drawn as a dotted red line. The marker describes the reported event; it is not itself a general warning that every nearby road is closed.
Incident information can be incomplete or become stale as crews clear a scene. Use the details card, surrounding road colors and the suggested route together. If navigation offers an alternative, review the route before accepting it rather than assuming the incident marker has disappeared.

Transit lines and stations
Public-transport layers use route lines and station or stop symbols. Where possible, line colors follow the local transport agency, so a colored rail or bus line is a transit identifier rather than the traffic scale above. Open a station or stop for departure information and service details. The exact line color and symbol set depend on the agency and the city.

How to read a notification icon in the phone
A notification icon is only a compact signal that an alert exists. The reliable meaning is in the notification’s title, message and category, not in the color of a tiny glyph. Pull down the notification shade (or open Notification Center on iPhone) and read the full text. Tapping the alert normally opens Maps or the relevant sharing screen; long-pressing an Android alert can reveal its channel and controls.
Google’s official help pages do not provide a complete, universal catalog of every notification glyph used across Android manufacturers, iOS releases and Maps versions. A pale circle, colored avatar ring or small status-bar symbol therefore cannot be assigned one meaning without its platform and text. A screenshot alone is not enough evidence, because launchers, icon packs, accessibility settings and app updates can alter the artwork.
Traffic-update notifications when Maps is not open
On Android, Google documents traffic updates that can arrive while you are not actively using Maps. Availability is limited to certain countries and regions. The feature also depends on Maps notifications being allowed and on the device granting the required location and physical-activity permissions. Google notes that menu names and notification-channel controls vary by device.

Check the relevant settings
- Open Google Maps and tap your profile picture or initial.
- Choose Settings, then Notifications. Look for traffic, commute or driving-related categories and enable the ones you want.
- In Android, open Settings > Apps (or Apps & notifications) > Maps > Notifications. Make sure the app and the applicable channel are allowed.
- Open Android’s Permissions page for Maps and review Location and, where listed, Physical activity. A battery-saver or background-restriction setting may also prevent timely delivery.
- Return to Maps and check that the correct Google account and travel preferences are selected. Regional availability can prevent the feature from appearing even when permissions are correct.
If a traffic alert arrives, its text should identify the route or condition. Do not infer a road closure merely from the Maps app icon in the status bar; open the alert to see the event described.
Location-sharing notifications: arrival, departure and refresh alerts
Arrival and departure alerts
When someone already shares their location with you, Maps can notify you when that person arrives at or leaves a selected place, such as home or work. Google describes this as a boundary alert: the person’s device crosses the location area you configured. It is about the other person’s shared location, not automatically about your own blue-dot position.
To configure one, open Maps, tap your profile picture or initial, choose Location sharing, select the person, and look for the option to add a notification. Choose whether it should trigger on arrival or departure and select the place. The exact labels can differ by platform and account. Maps notifications must be enabled. Google allows up to five Location Sharing notifications for each person.

These alerts stop when the person stops sharing their location. They are unavailable for some account types and cannot be set up for location sharing delivered through a link. If the person has paused, expired or otherwise ended sharing, the absence of a new alert is not proof that they stayed at the previous place.
Shared-location update notifications
Maps periodically refreshes a shared person’s location. A notification about a shared-location update can indicate that the displayed position has been refreshed, not that the person has just arrived somewhere. Turning off that update notification can also stop the refresh process and leave the displayed location inaccurate. If you need quieter alerts, review the specific notification category rather than disabling every Maps notification without checking that consequence.

Location Sharing is more than a moving dot. Google says a recipient may see the sharer’s name and photo, the device’s recent location even when Google apps are not being used, battery status, whether the device is charging, and (when configured) arrival or departure time. Location Sharing can continue to work when Timeline is turned off, because Timeline and live sharing are separate controls.
Best Value
Use the participant list in Maps > profile picture or initial > Location sharing to see who can view your position and to stop an individual share. If the information shown seems old, check the last-updated time, the device’s connection and location permission, and whether sharing is still active. A static avatar or ring does not by itself prove that the person is currently at the place shown.
A practical way to identify any unclear symbol
- Locate it. Map canvas means a map layer; the notification shade, lock screen or status bar means a phone alert.
- Read the text. Expand the notification before interpreting its small icon.
- Identify the subject. Is it a road incident, a place category, your current location, a route update or another person’s shared location?
- Open the destination. Tap a map incident for details, or tap/long-press a notification to open Maps and inspect its channel.
- Check settings and permissions. Review Maps notifications, Location Sharing participants, location permission and Android physical-activity permission where applicable.
- Account for context. Record Android or iOS, device manufacturer, Maps version, country and whether sharing is through an account or a link. Those details can explain a different icon or missing menu.
Common mistakes and fixes
“The red line means the road is closed.”
Usually, red traffic coloring means delays; darker red means slower traffic. A closure is represented by an incident marker and may also use a dotted red line. Tap the incident to distinguish the two.
“The person’s avatar icon is their live blue dot.”
A shared-location indicator belongs to the person who shared with you. It can show a recent device location and battery information, while your own current location is represented separately. Check the participant and last-updated details.
“I disabled the alert, so the location should still update.”
For shared-location updates, Google warns that disabling the update notification can stop refreshes and make the shown location inaccurate. Re-enable the relevant category if freshness matters.
“The menu in a guide is missing on my phone.”
Notification channels and permission names vary by Android manufacturer, and iOS presents its own controls. Start with Maps’ profile menu and the operating system’s app-notification page, then look for the closest traffic, location-sharing or updates category. Regional and account restrictions can remove a feature entirely.
Map legend versus notification tray
| Question | Map symbol | Phone notification |
|---|---|---|
| Where does it appear? | On the map canvas, route or layer legend | Notification shade, banner, lock screen or status bar |
| What does it describe? | A place, road condition, transit feature or incident | An app event, traffic update or sharing event |
| What should you do? | Tap or click the marker for details; inspect the route or layer | Expand the text, open the alert and inspect its notification category |
| What can change its appearance? | Map layer, zoom, city and transport-agency data | Operating system, manufacturer, app version, account, region and permissions |
Use the official in-app map legend for map marks, but do not treat that legend as a master key for every phone glyph. When the exact notification remains unidentified, the notification text and settings page are more dependable than its color or shape.
