Google Maps Lists let you collect places under a name—such as “Weekend in Chicago” or “Restaurants to try”—and see those saved places on a map. You can make a list from a search or a place card, keep it private, share it by link, or invite collaborators. Calling Lists “overlooked” is an editorial take, not a claim supported by published data on how many people use the feature.
What Google Maps Lists do
Lists turn individual saved places into named collections you can revisit. A trip list might include attractions, a hotel, restaurants, and shops; an everyday list might hold places you hope to visit. Seeing those saved places together on the map can help you visualize where candidate stops are, without automatically creating an itinerary or route.
Google Maps Help describes lists as collections for “your favorite places or places you want to visit.” The same help pages explain how to create and manage them, share access, and show or hide saved lists on the map: Google Maps Help: Create a list of places.
How to create a list and save places
The labels and paths differ by device. Use the steps for your platform; changes are saved automatically, according to Google’s help instructions.

On a computer
- Open Google Maps and select Saved.
- Select New list, name the list, and optionally choose an icon and add a description.
- To add a place, search for it or select it on the map, choose Save, then select an existing list or create one.
On Android
- Open Google Maps and tap You.
- Tap New list, enter a name and description, choose a list type, and save.
- Search for a place or select one on the map. Open its place card, tap Save, and choose a list or create one.
On iPhone or iPad
- Open Google Maps and tap You or Saved, then choose New list.
- Give the list a name and description.
- Search for a place or select it on the map. Open its place card, tap Save, and choose the list.
Google also documents adding notes to places on iPhone and iPad. Check the place card and list controls on your device, since labels and available options can vary.
Keep a list private, share it, or invite collaborators
Google says saved places are visible only to the account holder unless a list is shared. On desktop, Google documents private lists and lists that anyone with the link can find. On Android and iPhone or iPad, the help instructions also describe inviting collaborators. Sharing a link and inviting someone to edit are different choices: review the list’s sharing controls before sending it.

For shared lists, Google notes that viewers may be able to see members’ names and profile pictures, as well as who added or edited places and notes. Consider that visibility before sharing a list with a wider audience. Platform-specific sharing instructions are in Google Maps Help.
Show, hide, and save lists from other people
You can show a saved list’s places on the main map or hide them when you do not want its pins displayed. Google’s Android and iOS help pages also explain how to save a list someone else made; its places may appear on your map unless you hide that list.

Google Maps Help currently documents a limit of 3,000 entries for saved lists and warns that larger lists may not display properly. This is a product limit, not an estimate of typical list size or a statement about how many people use Lists: Google Maps Help: Save favorite places.
