Google Maps Itinerary: Build Ordered Stops and Share Routes

Yes. Google Maps can turn a list of places into an ordered driving, walking, cycling, or other supported route. Open Directions, add destinations, arrange the stops, review the available route options, and then navigate, share, or print the plan. For a multi-day schedule, keep the route and a separate saved place list because they solve different problems.

What a Google Maps itinerary can—and cannot—do

In Google Maps, an itinerary is best understood as a route with one starting point and several destinations. Maps supplies turn-by-turn directions between those points, an estimated distance and travel time, and route alternatives when they are available. You control the visit order by moving destinations in the list; Maps does not automatically create a complete multi-day schedule with dates, meal breaks, reservations, or lodging.

The current Google Maps Help instructions allow up to nine stops, counting the final destination. Google can change that limit or the wording of the control, so treat it as a current product limit rather than a permanent specification. If your plan contains more places, divide it into several routes or keep the overflow in a saved list.

Directions to multiple destinations are not available for public-transit or flight searches. Other modes, including cycling, can vary by location and by the map data available there. A route that appears for driving may therefore be unavailable when you switch modes.

Create a multi-stop itinerary on a computer

1. Open the directions planner

  1. Go to Google Maps in a desktop browser.
  2. Select Directions.
  3. Enter the starting point in the first field. You can type an address or place name, or select a point on the map.
  4. Enter the first destination in the next field and wait for Maps to resolve the location. Check the result carefully when several businesses or streets have similar names.

The starting point does not have to be your current location. Use a hotel, airport, railway station, parking area, or another precise place when that is where the trip actually begins.

2. Add every stop

  1. Select Add destination below the listed locations.
  2. Type another address or place name and choose the intended result.
  3. Repeat until all planned stops are present, staying within the current stop allowance.

Each field is a destination in the route, not a reservation or an appointment. If you need to visit two entrances of a large venue, add the entrance that is practical for the selected travel mode rather than relying on a broad venue label.

3. Choose a travel mode and inspect the route

Use the travel-mode buttons to compare driving, walking, cycling, or another mode offered for your area. Review the estimated duration, distance, and any route alternatives before you start. Depending on the location and mode, Maps may expose options such as toll roads or highways. Route ranking can reflect factors including your mode preference, trip duration, distance, and sometimes price; no single route is universally best.

Check the route on the map for obvious problems: a stop on the wrong side of a divided road, a destination pin in a neighboring town, a private road, a ferry crossing, or a road that is unsuitable for your vehicle. A place name can resolve to a similarly named branch, so verify the address shown in each destination field.

4. Put the stops in the order you want

On the desktop directions panel, drag a destination up or down in the list. The map and estimates update as you move it. Use the order that reflects your actual plan: a fixed appointment first, a location with limited opening hours at the appropriate time, or a final destination that is convenient for the next leg of the trip.

Maps is not a full traveling-salesperson optimizer. It gives you route estimates for the order you set; it does not promise the mathematically shortest sequence of stops. If order is flexible, try a few plausible arrangements and compare the displayed time and distance.

5. Start, share, or print the route

When the sequence and mode look right, select the option to begin navigation if you are ready to travel. For a paper copy or a desktop reference, use the sharing or printing controls in the directions panel. Printing is useful when a passenger needs the complete sequence without handling the phone.

Google’s desktop directions can be sent or shared in several ways, but the desktop-to-phone Send to phone workflow does not support directions containing multiple destinations. For a multi-stop plan, share a link or open the same route in the mobile app and confirm that every stop is present before leaving.

Create the itinerary in the Google Maps mobile app

The labels differ slightly from the desktop interface, but the sequence is the same on Android and on iPhone or iPad.

1. Select the first place

  1. Open the Google Maps app.
  2. Search for the starting point or first destination, or tap a place directly on the map.
  3. Tap Directions.

If the app chooses your current location as the start and that is not correct, tap the starting-point field and replace it with the intended origin.

2. Open the stop editor

  1. In the directions view, open More.
  2. Choose Edit stops.
  3. Add destinations one at a time, selecting the correct result for each place.
  4. Tap Done when the list is complete.

Some app versions show the stop editor directly in the directions card; the wording can change as Google updates Maps. Look for the control that edits or adds stops rather than creating a separate search for every place.

3. Reorder and review

Use the reorder handle beside a destination to drag it into the desired position. Recheck the travel mode, estimated time, distance, and route line after every substantial change. If a mode is missing, that area or mode may not have the necessary routing data, or the mode may not support multiple destinations.

Tap the navigation control only after confirming the complete list. During the trip, follow the current map, road signs, and local traffic rules; conditions can change after the route was calculated.

Route, saved list, and saved trip: choose the right tool

People often call all three features an “itinerary,” but they behave differently. Pick the one that matches what you need to do with the places.

Google Maps feature What it contains Best use Important limitation
Directions route An ordered start and destinations with navigation, distance, and time estimates Driving or walking between stops in a deliberate sequence The order is yours to set; multi-destination directions are unavailable for public-transit and flight searches
Saved place list A collection of places such as sights, restaurants, shops, or hotels Collecting ideas, planning by neighborhood, and sharing candidates with other people A list does not create turn-by-turn order or guarantee timing
Saved trip A frequently used supported route saved for quick access on mobile Commuting or repeating a supported driving, public-transit, or two-wheeler trip It is not a general multi-day itinerary planner

Use a saved list for flexible planning

Create a list when you are still deciding which places to visit. Add candidate sights, restaurants, viewpoints, or backup stops without forcing them into one driving sequence. Google lets you create, edit, share, and, for eligible lists, invite collaborators to edit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before sharing, check the list’s visibility and editing settings. A link that allows viewing is different from an invitation that allows other people to change the list. A list is particularly useful for a multi-day trip: make one list of all candidates, then build a separate route for the stops selected on each day.

Use a saved trip for a recurring journey

Google’s mobile help describes saved trips for supported driving, public-transit, and two-wheeler routes. This is appropriate for a commute or another journey you repeat. It should not be presented as a calendar, reservation manager, or general-purpose vacation itinerary.

How to plan a practical day instead of just a line on the map

Once you have the places, planning the order requires information that Maps may not know or may not apply to your schedule.

  • Start with fixed constraints. Put an appointment, timed entry, tour, or closing time first in your reasoning. Then arrange flexible stops around it.
  • Group nearby places. A short walking segment can be more sensible than repeatedly returning to a distant parking area.
  • Allow buffer time. The displayed travel estimate does not include finding parking, security lines, meals, photographs, restroom breaks, or delays at a busy attraction.
  • Check opening information separately. A place can appear in Maps even when it is closed, operating seasonally, or requiring a reservation.
  • Split long days. If the route approaches the stop allowance or becomes difficult to review, create separate daily routes and retain the complete collection in a saved list.
  • Choose a realistic origin and endpoint. A hotel, parking garage, transit station, or trailhead may produce a more useful route than a broad city-center label.

For example, put a museum with a timed entry in the route at its appointment time, group two nearby attractions afterward, and leave an optional restaurant as a saved-list item until you know how long the earlier visits take. The map route handles navigation; your schedule handles reservations and time on site.

Sharing a multi-stop plan with other people

Share the ordered route

On a computer, use the directions panel’s sharing control to copy a link or send the route through an available sharing option. The recipient should open the link and verify the start point, every destination, and the travel mode. A shared route is an instruction sequence, not proof that roads, entrances, or operating hours remain unchanged.

Because the desktop Send to phone handoff does not support multiple destinations, do not assume that selecting that option will transfer a complete multi-stop route. Copy the route link instead, or recreate and check the stops in the mobile app.

Share a collection of places

For a collaborative trip board, share a saved list rather than a directions link. Set the list’s visibility intentionally and decide whether collaborators may edit it. Recipients can then add or remove candidate places without changing a route that someone is already following.

Common problems and fixes

“Add destination” or “Edit stops” is missing

Confirm that you started from Directions, not only a place-information card. On mobile, open More and look for Edit stops. If the selected mode is public transit or a flight search, multi-destination directions are not supported; switch to a supported mode or create separate directions for each leg.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The app will not accept another stop

You may have reached the current limit of up to nine stops including the final destination. Remove an unnecessary stop, divide the journey into separate routes, or keep additional places in a saved list. Do not rely on a third-party interpretation of the limit if the Google Maps interface shows different wording after an update.

A destination is wrong or ambiguous

Delete the incorrect field and search again using the full street address, neighborhood, city, or a named landmark. Compare the pin with the expected location and inspect the address shown in the directions panel. This prevents a route to a similarly named branch or a place in another city.

The route uses an unsuitable road

Compare the alternate routes and inspect options such as tolls or highways when those controls are available. Consider the vehicle, walking ability, bicycle type, road restrictions, and local conditions. Map estimates cannot replace posted signs or current traffic regulations.

The route changes after sharing

Routes can recalculate when traffic, closures, map data, or the selected mode changes. Open the shared link again, verify every stop, and check the current route immediately before departure. If the recipient needs the places but not a fixed order, send the saved list instead.

Transit directions do not show all the legs

Public-transit coverage depends on local agency data being present in Google Maps. Even a valid route may not appear when an agency has not supplied data for that area or time. Multi-destination transit searches are not supported, so plan and review each transit leg separately.

Safety and reliability checks before you leave

  • Confirm the selected travel mode and that it matches the vehicle or path you are actually using.
  • Review the complete stop order, not only the next turn.
  • Check signs, closures, restrictions, and local traffic regulations on the ground.
  • Keep your phone charged and make sure the driver is not operating the app while moving.
  • For remote areas, save essential addresses or another offline reference before coverage becomes unreliable.
  • Recheck opening times, reservations, and access rules with the venue or transport operator.

Google Maps itself advises that when there is doubt, you should follow actual traffic regulations and confirm signage from the road or path you are using. Treat the map as a navigation aid, not as authority to enter a restricted road, trail, property, or transit facility.

A repeatable workflow for future trips

  1. Collect candidate places in a saved list while researching.
  2. Separate the list into practical days or geographic clusters.
  3. Create a directions route for one day, using the real origin and endpoint.
  4. Add stops, reorder them manually, and compare available route options.
  5. Check mode availability, opening constraints, and likely buffer time.
  6. Share the route with travelers who need navigation; share the list with people who are still choosing places.
  7. Open the final route in the app shortly before departure and verify that the map still reflects current conditions.

This workflow keeps flexible ideas separate from the ordered route, avoids forcing a multi-day schedule into one directions card, and makes it clear to everyone whether they received a navigation sequence or a collaborative collection of places.
