For most searches, start with Google Maps. It is usually the fastest way to see what is nearby, compare locations, check hours, get directions and inspect menus, dishes and photos when those details are available. Add a restaurant-focused service when you need recommendations shaped around a stated preference, or a specialist directory when plant-based coverage is the main objective.
No app label proves that a specific dish is safe for an allergy, celiac disease or another medical restriction. Use these services to build a shortlist, then confirm ingredients, substitutions, cooking surfaces and cross-contamination procedures with the restaurant.

The short answer: choose the tool for the job
| What you need | Best starting point | Why it helps | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Broad nearby discovery, directions and general restaurant context | Google Maps | Combines map search, place profiles, available menus or dish information, photos and Explore recommendations. | Google says not every dish is added, so an incomplete menu is not evidence that a dish is unavailable. |
| Recommendations influenced by food preferences | Yelp | Dietary and food preferences can personalize and prioritize recommendations in real time. | Non-matching places remain visible, so the results are not a strict exclusion list. |
| Vegan, vegetarian or vegan-friendly discovery | HappyCow | Its directory is built around plant-based categories and advertises filters for vegan, vegetarian, vegan-friendly and gluten-free options. | Categories and reviews still need to be checked against your exact order and date. |
| Allergy, celiac or serious cross-contamination concern | Any app for the initial shortlist, followed by direct contact | Apps make candidates easier to find and compare. | The reviewed services do not establish a medical-safety guarantee from a listing or filter. |
There is no universal winner across every city or dietary need. Compare each service on local coverage, category precision, menu freshness and how easily you can verify details with the business.
What Google Maps is best at
Finding realistic nearby options
Google Maps is a strong first stop when location matters more than a tightly curated dietary directory. Search results place restaurants on a map, show distance and travel time, and provide the surrounding context that a specialist app may not emphasize. A single profile can combine the address, hours, phone number, photos, reviews, ordering or reservation links where available, and directions.

The Explore feature also surfaces nearby restaurant and place recommendations. Google describes some lists as adapting to location and time, while partner-driven lists are available only in select cities. That means the recommendations you see can differ by region, time of day and account or product configuration; do not assume another city will expose the same collection.
Inspecting dishes, menus and photos
Google Maps can display restaurant dish information, photos and menus when data is available. This is useful for checking whether a place appears to offer a particular cuisine, plant-based item or naturally gluten-free dish before you travel. Google’s own help guidance warns: “Not every dish gets added to Google Maps.” Treat the feature as a window into the restaurant, not a complete inventory.
A missing dish may mean the business has not supplied it, a user has not added it, or the information has changed. Conversely, a photo or menu entry can be old. Check the date of recent photos and reviews, then use the restaurant’s current menu or phone number for anything consequential.

Personalization features require caution
A Google product announcement described selecting food and drink preferences to improve dining recommendations and a “Your match” rating associated with having Location History enabled. That announcement is historical context, not a promise that the same controls or rating are available to every account, app version or region today.
Google also described digital menus assembled from information supplied by people and merchants and found on restaurant websites, including vegetarian and vegan callouts. Those announcements explain how information may be collected; they do not guarantee that a current profile will show a dietary callout or that the callout covers preparation practices.

What Yelp adds
Preference-shaped recommendations
Yelp lets you select preferences in its Dietary and Food categories. Its support guidance says those choices personalize the experience, update recommendations in real time and prioritize matching options. This can save time when you repeatedly look for a style of food or dietary approach.
Personalization is prioritization, not filtering in the strict sense. Restaurants that do not match a selected preference are not removed from results. Read the listing, menu and reviews rather than assuming that appearing high in the list means the kitchen meets your standard.

Keyword and operational filters
Yelp search starts with a keyword and location, then offers filters such as price, hours and transaction options. Combining a dietary term with a neighborhood and an operational requirement—such as open now, delivery or reservations—can produce a more practical shortlist than a generic search.
Yelp notes that it may be compensated for helping users transact with businesses. That disclosure does not by itself indicate that a listing is unsuitable, but it is a reason to distinguish sponsored or transaction-oriented placement from independent evidence about ingredients or kitchen controls.
What HappyCow adds
A specialist plant-based directory
HappyCow is most useful when vegan and vegetarian discovery is the central task rather than one attribute among many. Its app listing advertises filters for vegan, vegetarian, vegan-friendly and gluten-free options. The category distinctions help you separate a fully plant-based venue from a restaurant that merely has a few suitable dishes.
HappyCow’s Google Play listing reports more than 256,000 listings in 185 countries, more than 1,875,000 reviews and more than 3,000,000 photos. These are figures published in the app listing, not an independent audit, and the listing does not state a publication date. They indicate the directory’s intended breadth, not guaranteed completeness in your neighborhood.

Read the category definitions carefully
HappyCow’s business guidance distinguishes vegetarian venues from places offering vegetarian options. A venue with a “veg-options” designation may serve meat as well as plant-based dishes. That distinction matters if you need a fully vegan kitchen, want to avoid shared equipment or simply prefer a restaurant where staff routinely handle plant-based orders.
The same guidance tells users to contact businesses directly about dietary or ethical concerns, including ingredient cross-contamination. A specialist directory improves discovery; it does not replace that conversation.
How to find suitable places step by step
Workflow 1: Start with Google Maps for broad local discovery
- Define the constraint before searching. Write down whether you need vegan food, vegetarian food, gluten-free choices, a specific allergen exclusion, wheelchair access, a late opening time or a combination. “Suitable” is too vague to verify.
- Search the map with a location and cuisine. Use a neighborhood, landmark or “near me” together with terms such as vegan restaurant, vegetarian brunch or gluten-free bakery. Add an operational term such as open now only if it is essential.
- Open several profiles, not just the first result. Check the address, current hours, phone number, recent photos, menu link and recent reviews. Compare at least three candidates when time allows.
- Inspect dishes and menu entries. Look for explicit ingredient descriptions and substitution notes. Remember that Google says not every dish is added, so absence from the profile is inconclusive.
- Check recency and consistency. A recent menu, a recent customer photo and the restaurant’s own website should broadly agree. Treat a lone old photo or review as a lead rather than confirmation.
- Verify before travelling when the restriction matters. Call or message the restaurant, state the exact restriction and ask whether the kitchen can prevent cross-contact. Record the name of the person who confirms the procedure if the meal is medically important.
Workflow 2: Use Yelp when preferences should shape the shortlist
- Set your dietary and food preferences. Select the categories that describe what you generally want to see. Do not select a preference merely because it sounds similar to a medical requirement.
- Run a location-based search. Combine the neighborhood or city with a cuisine or dish, then apply practical filters for hours, price and transaction options.
- Review the full result set. Because Yelp keeps non-matching businesses visible, inspect each candidate’s description and menu instead of relying on ranking.
- Use reviews as questions, not proof. Reviews can reveal whether a restaurant has handled substitutions or dietary requests, but they describe individual visits and may not reflect current recipes or staff.
- Confirm with the business. Ask what the kitchen can prepare now, which ingredients are used and how shared fryers, grills, pans or prep areas are managed.
Workflow 3: Use HappyCow for plant-based discovery
- Choose the category that matches your goal. Distinguish vegan venues from vegetarian or vegan-friendly places, and check whether the listing is a dedicated plant-based business or a mixed menu.
- Apply the relevant filters. Use vegan, vegetarian, vegan-friendly or gluten-free filters as discovery aids, not as medical certifications.
- Read the listing and recent reviews. Look for menu examples, comments about substitutions and signs that the category has changed. A review can be useful even when it is not conclusive.
- Check the business’s current channels. Compare the listing with the restaurant’s own menu, social updates or phone information. Listings and menus can change at different times.
- Ask about preparation. For allergies or cross-contamination concerns, contact the business directly, as HappyCow’s own guidance recommends.
What dietary labels do—and do not—tell you
Vegan and vegetarian
“Vegan” generally describes food without animal-derived ingredients, but a menu label may apply only to a dish, not the whole kitchen. “Vegetarian” usually excludes meat and fish while allowing dairy or eggs, depending on the restaurant’s definition. “Vegan-friendly” or “veg-options” signals that suitable choices exist in a broader menu, not that every surface, utensil or fryer is dedicated to them.
Ask about sauces, stocks, dressings, garnishes, egg wash, dairy-based spreads and shared cooking oil. A dish can appear plant-based in a photo while containing an animal-derived ingredient that is not obvious from its name.

Gluten-free can mean a recipe is made without wheat, barley or rye, but it does not automatically describe how the kitchen prevents contact with gluten-containing ingredients. Confirm whether the restaurant uses separate preparation areas, fryers, toasters and utensils, and whether staff can identify hidden sources such as sauces or seasonings.

If you have celiac disease or a medically diagnosed sensitivity, explain the medical importance plainly. “I prefer gluten-free” may prompt a different level of care than “I must avoid cross-contact.”
Allergen safety
Allergy safety depends on ingredients, substitutions, supplier changes, cleaning practices, staff training and the specific order. None of the documented app features establishes that a restaurant is allergy-safe. An app label can help you find candidates, but only the business can describe its current procedures, and even that answer cannot eliminate every risk.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to verify a restaurant before ordering
- Name the allergen or restriction precisely. Say “peanut allergy” or “celiac disease,” not only “dietary preference.”
- Ask about hidden ingredients. Include stocks, sauces, marinades, garnishes, dressings and cooking oils.
- Ask about shared equipment. Cover fryers, grills, pans, cutting boards, knives, gloves, toaster slots and preparation counters.
- Ask whether substitutions are possible. A safe ingredient can become unsuitable through a sauce, garnish or shared utensil.
- Confirm at the restaurant. Staff, menus and suppliers can change since the app listing or your last visit.
- Have a fallback plan. If the staff cannot answer clearly, choose another venue rather than treating uncertainty as approval.
Coverage, freshness and regional differences
Map and directory data are assembled from different sources. Google describes recommendations influenced by community reviews and trusted sources, with some lists changing by location and time. Its partner-driven lists are limited to select cities. A restaurant may therefore appear prominently in one market and barely at all in another.
HappyCow’s published global counts show the scale it aims for, but they do not prove that every town has equal coverage or that every listing is current. Yelp’s preference system can improve ranking for your stated interests, yet the service does not remove every non-matching business. Across all three services, check update dates, recent photos and the restaurant’s own current information.
A practical decision rule
Use this sequence when you are unsure which app to open first:
Best Value
- Need a place nearby right now? Open Google Maps and compare profiles, hours, directions and available menu information.
- Want recommendations shaped by recurring food preferences? Use Yelp’s Dietary and Food settings, then inspect the individual listings that remain visible.
- Searching mainly for vegan or vegetarian venues? Start with HappyCow’s specialist categories, then verify the exact menu and preparation method.
- Managing a medical restriction? Use whichever service gives you the best local candidates, but make the restaurant’s direct answer the deciding evidence.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming a filter is a guarantee
Filters organize information; they do not certify a kitchen. Keep the distinction between “listed as vegan-friendly” and “confirmed safe for my allergy.”
Treating an incomplete menu as a complete menu
Google explicitly notes that not every dish is added. A blank or short menu may reflect missing data rather than limited offerings.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesConfusing a vegetarian option with a vegetarian restaurant
Check whether the listing describes a fully vegetarian business, a vegan business, or a mixed restaurant with some suitable dishes. The preparation environment may be materially different.
Relying on an old review or photo
Recipes, suppliers, ownership, hours and equipment change. Give greater weight to recent information and confirm details directly when the consequence of error is high.
Ignoring practical constraints
A restaurant can satisfy a dietary preference yet fail your real-world needs because it is closed, too far away, unable to take reservations or unable to explain its preparation process. Apply hours, distance, price and access requirements before you commit.
Bottom line
Google Maps is the best general-purpose starting point for finding nearby restaurants and understanding the local context. Yelp is useful when its preference controls match the way you normally search. HappyCow is the most focused option of the three for plant-based discovery. For allergies, celiac disease and other medically important restrictions, use the apps to find candidates, then rely on a direct, current conversation with the restaurant—not a badge, ranking or menu photo—to decide where to eat.
