Short answer: choose Ask Maps when your trip problem is about places, stops, local questions, and a route you can follow. Choose Google Search’s AI Mode Canvas when you need a complete itinerary that combines flights, hotels, activities, Maps information, and web sources. They overlap, but Google describes them as serving different planning jobs, and no independent head-to-head test establishes a universal winner.
Ask Maps or Search Canvas: the decision at a glance
The most useful distinction is the object each tool produces. Ask Maps starts with geography: a destination, a corridor between destinations, or a practical question about places. Its answer is centered on a customized map and can lead directly to saving a place, making a reservation, sharing a result, or navigating there. Search AI Mode Canvas starts with a trip brief and assembles a broader plan using information from Search, flights, hotels, Maps photos and reviews, and other websites.

| Find worthwhile stops between two destinations | Ask Maps | Google presents Ask Maps as a conversational way to request stops, directions, estimated arrival times, and local tips on a map. |
| Compare hotels, flights, and activities as one trip | Search AI Mode Canvas | Canvas is designed to assemble an itinerary from real-time Search information, travel options, Maps material, and relevant web pages. |
| Choose among nearby restaurants, attractions, or services | Ask Maps | The output emphasizes mapped places and local details, with actions such as saving, sharing, reserving, and navigating. |
| Balance competing priorities, such as a hotel near brunch or near hiking | Search AI Mode Canvas | Google specifically describes refining a Canvas plan with follow-up questions that change those trade-offs. |
| Book or track a flight or hotel from an AI conversation | Search AI Mode, where available | Google’s August 2026 announcement describes price tracking, points-or-miles rates, and hotel booking features, but does not promise every option in every market. |
This is a workflow choice, not a quality ranking. Google’s announcements describe capabilities and rollout dates, not a controlled comparison of itinerary accuracy, recommendation quality, or traveler outcomes.

What Google Maps Ask Maps does
Google announced Ask Maps on March 12, 2026 as a conversational way to ask complex questions about places and receive recommendations displayed on a customized map. The company says the feature can use information from more than 300 million places and a community of more than 500 million contributors; those are Google’s reported scale figures, not an independently measured accuracy score. See Google’s Ask Maps and Immersive Navigation announcement.

Ask Maps is most valuable when the answer must remain tied to physical locations. Instead of asking for a generic list of attractions, you can describe a route, timing constraint, food preference, accessibility need, or type of stop and ask for recommendations along that route. Google’s example prompt is:
“I’m headed to the Grand Canyon, Horseshoe Bend and Coral Dunes — any recommended stops along the way?”
The resulting experience is intended to combine recommendations with directions, estimated arrival times, and local tips. Google says users can save places, share them, make restaurant reservations, and navigate from recommendations. Those actions make Ask Maps a natural fit for a road trip or for a day when you are already in a destination and need to decide what to do next.
Where Ask Maps has an advantage
- Spatial reasoning: the answer is organized around where places sit relative to your route, not only around a text list.
- Stop selection: you can ask for several stops between named destinations and then judge the route and timing together.
- Local questions: questions about nearby food, attractions, services, or practical needs map naturally to the product.
- Action after discovery: saving, sharing, reserving, and navigating are part of the described flow.
What Ask Maps does not replace
Ask Maps is not presented as a complete flight-and-hotel shopping workspace. It can help identify places and construct a route, but Google’s Ask Maps announcement does not describe a unified comparison of airfares, lodging inventory, and a day-by-day itinerary assembled from the wider web. If those are the core of your planning problem, Canvas is the more appropriate first step.
What Search AI Mode Canvas does
Google announced travel planning with Canvas on November 17, 2025. The company described plans built from real-time Search information for flights and hotels, Maps photos and reviews, and relevant information from other websites. A Canvas plan can be refined through follow-up questions, including trade-offs such as staying closer to brunch or closer to hiking trails. The original announcement is available at Google’s travel-planning Canvas announcement.

Canvas starts with a trip brief rather than a single map problem. You can state a destination, dates, party size, budget range, interests, pace, and constraints, then ask the system to turn that brief into a plan. Follow-up prompts are useful because they let you change one variable without rewriting the entire request: shorten the trip, move the hotel, reduce driving, add a rest day, or favor a neighborhood with a different atmosphere.
Where Canvas has an advantage
- Trip-wide coordination: flights, accommodation, activities, and destination research can be considered in one planning surface.
- Trade-off analysis: you can ask how the plan changes when location, cost, convenience, or activity priorities change.
- Web breadth: the described experience can draw on relevant websites in addition to Search and Maps data.
- Iterative itinerary building: follow-up questions can progressively reshape the plan instead of producing a single static answer.
What Canvas does not guarantee
Canvas is not evidence that every listed room, fare, opening hour, or activity is available when you are ready to book. Google’s descriptions explain how information is assembled, but they do not establish a comparative accuracy rate. Treat the itinerary as a planning draft and confirm critical details with the airline, hotel, attraction, restaurant, transit authority, or other responsible provider.
How to use Ask Maps for a route or local decision
Use a prompt that names the geography and the decision you need to make. A vague request such as “What should I do?” gives the system less useful structure than a question that includes destinations, timing, interests, and constraints.
- Open Google Maps and start Ask Maps. The exact entry point and account eligibility can vary by device, country, and rollout status, so use the Ask Maps control shown in your current Maps app or web experience.
- State the route or base location. Name the starting point, destination, and any intermediate places. For example, identify a national park, a nearby town, and the final overnight stop.
- Add practical limits. Include the date or time window, maximum detour, driving tolerance, meal preferences, mobility requirements, children’s ages, or whether a stop must have parking.
- Ask for a decision-ready result. Request a small number of recommended stops, approximate time implications, and reasons each stop fits your constraints.
- Inspect the mapped results. Check whether recommendations are actually on your route, whether the sequence is sensible, and whether the estimated arrival times fit your day.
- Refine one variable at a time. Ask to remove long detours, replace a crowded attraction, add a scenic viewpoint, or find an option suitable for a particular meal or accessibility need.
- Take the next action only after checking details. Save or share the places, make a reservation where available, and start navigation after confirming hours, access rules, and travel conditions.
Prompt patterns that produce useful map answers
Find three food stops between [start] and [destination] that require no more than a 15-minute detour and are open after 7 p.m.Suggest a half-day route in [city] for two adults, with mostly flat walking, one museum, and a quiet lunch nearby.Which viewpoints between [place A] and [place B] are open at sunrise, and how much extra driving does each add?
These prompts do not guarantee that every condition will be satisfied perfectly. They make the criteria explicit so you can inspect the map and correct any mismatch.
How to use Search AI Mode Canvas for a complete itinerary
- Enter AI Mode in Google Search and open or create a Canvas travel plan. Availability depends on your market, device, account, and Google’s current rollout.
- Write a complete trip brief. Include destination or destinations, dates, departure airport or city, number of travelers, room needs, budget range, interests, preferred pace, and hard constraints.
- Ask for a structured first draft. Request day-by-day activities, suggested areas to stay, transportation assumptions, and the reasoning behind major choices.
- Check the source context. Open the underlying flight, hotel, Maps, or web results before treating a price, review, policy, or schedule as confirmed.
- Use targeted follow-ups. Ask for a cheaper version, less driving, a different neighborhood, more time outdoors, or a plan that protects a particular reservation.
- Separate planning from booking. Once the outline works, verify live inventory and final terms directly in the booking flow or with the provider.
Useful Canvas prompt structure
A strong initial request can follow this order:
- Trip purpose and destination.
- Exact or flexible dates.
- Departure point and transportation preference.
- Travelers, accessibility, dietary, or family requirements.
- Budget and hotel priorities.
- Activities and the pace you want.
- Output format, such as a four-day schedule with neighborhood suggestions and a list of items requiring advance reservations.
After the first draft, make changes explicit: Keep the same dates, but move the hotel closer to the hiking trails, limit daily driving to 90 minutes, and preserve the museum on day two. A constraint-preserving follow-up is easier to evaluate than a completely new request.

Ask Maps versus Canvas by trip type
Road trips with several stops
Start with Ask Maps. Its mapped output lets you see whether a suggested attraction is genuinely along the way and how a detour affects the sequence. Once you know the stops, Canvas can help you broaden the plan to flights, hotels, or activities at the overnight destinations.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →City breaks built around flights and a hotel
Start with Canvas because the initial decision is usually where to stay, how to get there, and how to distribute activities across several days. Switch to Ask Maps when you need to compare restaurants, neighborhoods, attractions, or walking routes within the city.
One-day local planning
Ask Maps is usually the faster fit. Give it a starting point, available hours, interests, and a maximum travel time. The map-first result is easier to turn into navigation than a broad web itinerary.
Family or accessibility-constrained travel
Use both, but make constraints concrete. Canvas can help organize the overall pace and lodging trade-offs; Ask Maps can test individual stops for location, parking, route length, and nearby facilities. Confirm accessibility and operating details with the venue because a generated description is not a guarantee.
Flexible dates and deal hunting
Canvas is the better starting surface when flight or hotel combinations drive the decision. Google’s August 27, 2026 announcement describes AI Mode features for flight price tracking, points-or-miles rates, and hotel booking. The announcement does not establish that every booking partner, fare, loyalty program, or market is supported, so inspect the options shown to your account. Read the announcement at Google’s three new ways to plan and book travel in Search.

A practical two-tool workflow
You do not have to choose one product for the entire trip. A reliable sequence is to use Canvas for the strategic outline and Ask Maps for geographic execution.
- Draft the trip in Canvas. Establish dates, transportation, lodging areas, priorities, and a realistic pace.
- Extract location decisions. Note the neighborhoods, attractions, meal types, and overnight towns that the draft depends on.
- Test each day in Ask Maps. Ask whether the places fit a sensible route, how much local travel they require, and which stops are close enough to combine.
- Send corrections back to the itinerary. If a day requires excessive backtracking, ask Canvas to reorganize it while preserving the important reservation or activity.
- Verify and book. Confirm live prices, cancellation terms, opening hours, transport schedules, permits, and reservation requirements with the relevant providers.
This division keeps each tool focused on the job it is designed to support: Canvas for cross-trip coordination and Ask Maps for place-level and route-level decisions.
Availability and rollout details
| Feature statement | Google’s dated description | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Ask Maps announced | March 12, 2026 | Google introduced conversational place questions and customized-map recommendations. |
| Canvas travel planning announced | November 17, 2025 | The initial experience was described as desktop-only in the United States for people opted into the AI Mode experiment in Labs. |
| Canvas broader U.S. availability | April 17, 2026 | Google described Canvas travel planning as available to everyone in the United States. |
| AI Mode booking-related features | August 27, 2026 | Google described flight price tracking, points-or-miles rates, and hotel booking in AI Mode. |
These dates document Google’s announcements, not a permanent worldwide entitlement. Your country, device, account, language, experiment enrollment, and the particular booking option can affect what appears. If a control is missing, check the current Google Maps and Search experience for your account rather than assuming the feature is unavailable everywhere.
How to verify an AI-generated travel plan
Generated recommendations are a starting point. Before you rely on them, run a short verification pass focused on information that changes quickly or can disrupt a day.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Hours and closure dates: confirm the venue’s own current schedule, including holiday or seasonal exceptions.
- Reservations: check whether a table, timed entry, permit, or tour actually requires advance booking and whether the suggested time is still offered.
- Prices and terms: compare the final total, taxes, fees, cancellation rules, baggage conditions, and resort or facility charges at checkout.
- Transport and access: verify road restrictions, transit disruptions, parking rules, permits, weather-related closures, and walking conditions.
- Location accuracy: make sure a recommendation is in the intended city or on the intended side of a route; similarly named places can produce an expensive mistake.
- Reviews and suitability: read recent provider information and multiple current reviews when a recommendation depends on noise, accessibility, dietary handling, or other personal requirements.
For high-consequence details, the responsible provider is the final authority. Neither Google’s product descriptions nor an AI-generated itinerary constitutes a booking confirmation.
Best Value
Common mistakes and fixes
Using a broad question for a route problem
If you ask Canvas for “the best things in a region” when you really need stops between two towns, you may get an appealing but geographically inefficient plan. Give Ask Maps the route, detour limit, and available time instead.
Expecting Ask Maps to compare an entire trip
A mapped list of places is not the same as a flight-and-hotel plan. Move the broader brief to Canvas, then return to Ask Maps for local sequencing.
Accepting the first itinerary without constraints
State the limits that make a plan usable: maximum daily driving, walking tolerance, budget, meal timing, child-friendly requirements, or a fixed reservation. Then ask for one change at a time and inspect what moved.
Treating generated details as live confirmation
Prices, hours, inventory, and access conditions can change. Open the underlying result and confirm directly before paying, driving a long distance, or relying on a timed entry.
Assuming feature availability from another person’s screen
Rollouts differ by market, device, account, and date. Use the controls visible to your account and consult Google’s current announcements for the latest stated availability.
Which one should you use?
Choose Ask Maps if your next decision sounds like “What should I stop at between these places?”, “Which nearby option fits this need?”, or “Can you turn these suggestions into a route?” Choose Search AI Mode Canvas if it sounds like “Build my trip around these dates and budget,” “Compare where to stay with what we want to do,” or “Revise the itinerary when I change this trade-off.” For a complex trip, use Canvas to set the structure and Ask Maps to make each day geographically workable.
Google’s published material supports that division of labor, not a blanket claim that one tool is better. The final choice should follow the shape of your planning problem, and every time-sensitive detail still needs confirmation before you depend on it.
