Google Maps and Waze now show petrol and diesel prices for filling stations across the UK, using data from the government’s Fuel Finder scheme. The feature launched on 8 October 2026. To use it, search for “petrol” or “fuel” and the map shows nearby prices. The figures come from a mandatory reporting system, not a live pump feed, so it helps to know what the prices can and cannot tell you before you change your route for a few pence a litre.
How to find fuel prices in Google Maps or Waze
Google’s launch announcement describes a short set of steps. The same search works in both apps, and the announcement does not describe any further menus, so treat anything beyond these steps as something to check on your own device.

- Open Google Maps or Waze on your phone.
- Search for “petrol” or “fuel”. Nearby stations appear with their prices shown on the map.
- Open a station’s listing to see the fuel types it offers. Google says the different fuel types offered by a station are shown in one place.
The feature covers petrol and diesel. Compare the price of the fuel your vehicle takes, not the cheapest figure on screen, because a station can show a lower price for one grade while another grade is more expensive.
How current the prices are
The government describes the prices as near-real-time. The rule behind that description is that stations must report a price change within 30 minutes. That is an obligation on the station, so it sets a deadline for updates rather than a guarantee that every displayed figure matches the pump at the moment you read it.

What the 30-minute rule does and does not cover
- It covers the time between a station changing its price and reporting that change to the scheme.
- It does not guarantee that every station reports on time, or that every station is listed at all.
- Google’s wording is “real-time look” at prices, and the government’s wording is “near real-time”. Both describe the data experience. Neither promises that a displayed price will match the pump you stand at.
If a price looks wrong, the government factsheet directs drivers to report the discrepancy through the government service. A station that changes its price during your journey may still show the earlier figure until its report is processed.
How much of the market the data covers
Two official figures describe coverage. They measure different things and should not be combined into one percentage.

The 99% figure is about fuel volume, so high-volume sites weigh heavily in it. The 90% figure is a count of stations, so a small independent forecourt that has not signed up counts the same as a large one. A driver can therefore see high coverage by volume while still finding that some local stations are missing. Coverage is high but not complete, and neither figure guarantees that the station you are heading to appears on the map.

Why pump prices rose
The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) published a monitoring report in May 2026. It attributes the rapid increase in pump prices after the conflict in the Middle East primarily to a sharp rise in crude oil prices and refining spreads. Its figures run from the end of February 2026 to the week commencing 20 April 2026. They describe that period, not October prices.

What drove the increase

These two components explain only part of each rise. The CMA material reviewed here does not itemise the remainder, so do not read the table as a full breakdown of the price increase.
The CMA also reported that supermarkets tended to be cheaper and motorway filling stations tended to be the most expensive in the patterns it reviewed.

What the savings figures mean
Three savings figures are circulating. Each one comes from a different source, covers a different situation, and should be read on its own terms.

- £40 a year. The government’s estimate of the average saving for car-owning households that compare fuel prices. It is an average estimate, not a promise to any individual driver.
- Up to £9 on a fill. The CMA’s figure for an average 55-litre tank, comparing the most expensive and cheapest retailers within a 10-minute drive during the period it examined (to April 2026).
- Supermarket gap. In the CMA’s March–April period, supermarket petrol was up to 8p per litre lower and diesel up to 11p per litre lower than non-supermarket prices. The CMA translates these into just under £5 for petrol and just under £6 for diesel on a 55-litre fill. Those cash figures do not match a simple multiplication of the maximum gaps (8p × 55 litres is about £4.40 and 11p × 55 litres is about £6.05), so they reflect the CMA’s own averaging. Do not recalculate them from the maxima.
The regulator does not claim that every driver will save the same amount. The useful test is whether the cheaper station’s price saving on your fill outweighs the extra distance and time to reach it.

Other services using the same data
The government factsheet lists Google Maps, Waze, PetrolPrices.com, RAC Fuel Watch, Confused.com, MotorMouth, MoneyHelper and other apps and sites among services that use Fuel Finder data. It says drivers can choose whichever service works best for them. The same data does not mean the same display, so compare the features each one offers. The material reviewed does not establish whether any of these services has a commercial partnership with Google or the government, and this article makes no such claim.
What officials and Google said
The UK government’s launch release on 8 October 2026 included these statements:
- Polly Billington MP, Minister for Energy Consumers: “Accessing the cheapest fuel should be simple, which is why it is a gamechanger for near real-time fuel prices to be shown on Google Maps for the first time in the UK, helping drivers to find the best deal and save money at the pump.”
- John Healey, Chancellor of the Exchequer: “Getting the best price at the pump is now easier. This doesn’t fix everything; bills have gone up because of events in the Middle East.”
- Sarah-Jayne Williams, Director of Global Product Partnerships for Geo at Google: “Integrating Fuel Finder data into Google Maps and Waze gives drivers visibility on nearby pump prices, helping drivers make intentional choices to help their budgets go further this winter.”
In Google’s own announcement, Sarah-Jayne Williams, Global Product Partnerships Director at Google Maps and Waze, wrote: “As the cost of living continues to rise, managing expenses has never been more critical. That’s why we’re launching fuel prices in the UK on Google Maps and Waze.”

Limits of the feature
- Geography. The launch is UK-only. The announcements do not say whether, when or where Google will extend fuel prices to other countries, so do not assume a rollout elsewhere.
- Listings. The scheme does not guarantee that every station is represented, and the sources do not give station-by-station guarantees for the Maps display.
- Pump match. A displayed price is not a guarantee of the price you will pay at the pump on a given day.
- Interface. Google’s announcement describes the search and the listing view. Any further interface behaviour, such as how prices are sorted or filtered, varies by app version and device and was not established in the sources.
A practical checklist before you detour
- Check the price for the fuel type your vehicle takes.
- Work out the extra distance and time to the station, and whether it is a detour on your normal route.
- Confirm the station is listed. If it is not, the feature cannot show you its price.
- Treat motorway stations and supermarket sites as different cases. The CMA reported a pattern of supermarkets being cheaper and motorway stations being dearer, but the saving depends on your fill and your route.
- If a price looks wrong, report it through the government service described in the Fuel Finder factsheet.
