Google is changing how links appear in its AI-powered Search on October 15, 2026, putting more source links closer to the top of AI Overviews and AI Mode answers. The company is also testing an official-websites area, expanding news-style carousels for developing topics, redesigning links at the end of responses and experimenting with clickable creator names in video results.
What is changing in Google AI Search?
The changes affect both AI Overviews, which appear within conventional Search results, and AI Mode, Google’s more conversational search experience. The common goal is to make it easier to move from an AI-generated explanation to the websites, publishers and creators behind the information.

Inline links move higher in answers
AI Overviews and AI Mode will show more links within the text of a response. Google is also aiming to place important links higher in the answer rather than requiring users to read through the entire summary before finding a source. This should reduce the number of steps needed to check an original page or continue researching a topic.

Some AI Mode responses may display a dedicated section near the top that surfaces official websites. The feature is being tested, so it will not necessarily appear for every query, account or region. When it does appear, the section is intended to give users a direct route to authoritative sites instead of relying solely on pages selected inside the conversational answer.

Google may explain why a link matters
AI Overviews and AI Mode may add context describing the relevance of particular links. That explanation can help users distinguish a primary source, a useful background page or another type of supporting result before they click.
Where the new discovery features appear
| Search location | What Google is changing | Availability described | Primary benefit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Inline AI response | More source links, positioned higher in the answer | Being introduced in AI Overviews and AI Mode | Faster access to cited websites |
| Top of an AI Mode response | Dedicated official-websites section | Testing; appearance can vary | Direct discovery of official sources |
| Developing-topic carousel | More prominent carousel treatment for timely or changing subjects | Expanding to more regions and languages | Quick comparison of current coverage |
| End of an AI response | Links redesigned with thumbnails and a more clickable presentation | Redesign rolling out as part of the update | Easier visual browsing after reading the answer |
| Video result | Creator and publisher names can become clickable | Testing; Search profiles are currently available in the United States for creators with a sizable following | Navigation to a creator’s or publisher’s Search profile |
Developing-topic carousels are expanding
Google is expanding prominent carousels for developing topics to additional regions and languages. These modules are designed for stories and subjects that are changing quickly, where a single static answer can become outdated.

The carousels may prioritize coverage from sources a user prefers. That preference-based selection could make the module more useful for people who consistently follow particular publishers, although the exact eligibility, controls and rollout schedule are not specified in the reported update.

End-of-answer links get a richer design
Links placed at the end of AI responses are being redesigned with thumbnails and a more clickable layout. This gives users another way to browse source material after they have read the generated answer, particularly when a visual cue helps identify the page, video or publisher.
Clickable names are coming to some video results
Google is testing clickable creator and publisher names in video results. Selecting a name can take users to that person’s or organization’s Search profile rather than simply opening the individual video.
Search profiles are currently available in the United States for creators with a sizable following, according to the reported details. That means the profile destination should not be assumed to exist for every creator, country or account while the experiment continues.
What this means for people using Search
- Checking original information should take fewer clicks: prominent inline links and an official-sites area can expose primary destinations earlier.
- Source choice becomes more visible: link explanations, preferred-source carousels and richer end links give users additional clues about where information came from.
- Availability will vary: several features are tests or staged expansions, so two people can see different layouts for the same query.
- AI summaries remain a starting point: users who need exact wording, full evidence or the latest update should still open the linked page.
What this means for publishers and creators
More visible links create additional opportunities for readers to reach a publisher’s site, an official destination or a creator profile directly from an AI result. The changes also make source presentation part of the search experience: placement, explanatory context, thumbnails and profile links can affect whether a user continues beyond the generated summary.
However, greater prominence does not guarantee more visits. AI Overviews can answer a question without requiring a click, and the available report does not establish that the new placements will compensate publishers for traffic losses associated with AI-generated results. The traffic effect therefore remains uncertain until broader usage data is available.

How to find the links when the update reaches you
- Run a query that produces an AI Overview or switch to AI Mode.
- Look near the beginning of the response for inline source links or an official-websites section.
- For a developing story, check for a carousel that may contain coverage from sources you prefer.
- Scroll to the end of the answer for redesigned links with thumbnails.
- In video results, select a visible creator or publisher name to see whether it opens a Search profile.
Because Google is testing and expanding these features at different rates, the absence of a section or clickable name does not necessarily indicate a problem with the query.
The Bottom Line
Google is making source discovery more prominent across AI Overviews and AI Mode, but several features remain tests or regional rollouts. The practical result is faster access to official sites, current coverage and creator profiles, while the effect on publisher traffic is still unknown.
